FLOATING

HOTEL London engineer and architect, Gianluca Santosuosso, has released design plans for a futuristic floating hotel that will move with the current of the ocean. Expected to change the world of cruising holidays, the MORPHotel features a linear, 800-metre-long spinal structure composed of individually connected capsules containing accommodation rooms, restaurants, gardens, theatres and a pool. The “floatel” ecosystem also includes a helipad so visitors can fly aboard and offers guests an ever-changing view from their rooms due to its constant slow movement. Some luxury accommodation pods will even be able to detach from the main part of the structure and sail within a safe distance from the main structure. Santosuosso’s vision is for the hotel to be as self-sustaining as possible through using integrated solar panels, rainwater harvesting and a floating vegetable garden. Once docked at ports, guests could disembark the MORPHotel and explore that particular city. Santosuosso said, “I believe the idea of the journey itself, without a precise destination, is a dream shared among most people.”

PECULIAR PLANT PODS

A collection of mysterious foul-smelling plants have been discovered in the British countryside, baffling local residents. The plants reportedly hatch out of a jelly-like pod before emerging with four red-coloured tentacles covered in brown goo and has resulted in some people describing them to be an “alien life form”. One of the peculiar plants was found by conservationist, Dan Hoare, in the New Forest located in the south of England, who shared photographs on his Twitter account. However, the alien-plant theory was soon shut down with the plant confirmed to be a rare Devil’s Finger or Octopus Stinkhorn. Related to the common Stinkhorn, a well-known woodland fungus found in Britain, the plant produces a sticky brown substance which attracts flies that then transport its spores to other locations. The Devil’s Finger is native to Australia and New Zealand, but, over the years has been introduced to other continents. According to Kew Royal Botanic Gardens, the plant has been identified in areas such as Bedfordshire, Hampshire, Kent, Suffolk, Surrey and the Channel Islands.

STAR BUG SNACK BAR

A Sydney nutritionist is hoping Australian consumers will embrace the nutritional benefits of a new snack bar made from crickets. The insect infused product has been developed by Camilla Ryals who was inspired after learning about the high protein potential and low calorie content of crickets. Ryals wanted to create a snack that would appeal to the general public and revelaed crickets are “extremely nutrient-rich, probably one of the best foods you can eat. People picture eating the whole cricket, but when we get the cricket it’s in a flour, very similar to almond meal.” The crickets are sourced from an Australian farm and are fed organic, iron-rich food and filtered water. Ryals added that there were also ecological benefits of farming crickets, such as, less land, water and food requirements than traditional farm animals like cattle and said, “It’s the way of the future even without looking at the nutrition; gram for gram you’re getting more protein than from a cow and using less space and resources. Foodies want something different; they’re intrigued by it.”

X-RAY VISION

Becoming closer to Superman may be possible in the distant future with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) developing specialised high-technological software. Researchers at the Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Lab (CSAIL) have been using variations in radio signals to identify human silhouettes through walls and track their movements. Although it’s not quite the same as Superman, the team believe the technology will be able to assist health care providers with keeping a closer eye on the young or elderly, as well as, the potential to act as a strategic tool for law enforcement and the military. Tracking a person’s movements in real time, the device depicts the person as a red dot which shows as a signal on a screen. Developers are hoping to market the new technology this year with an estimation of the device costing between $250 and $300.

NASA have shared a Hubble image of a newborn star spitting out two jets that resemble a lightsaber from the popular movie series, Star Wars. The formation was described by NASA as a “cosmic, double-bladed lightsaber” with a “Jedi-like cloak of dust” near the centre. In reality, the image represents a baby star with two jets extending out in opposite directions with the Hubble team officially explaining, “Gas from a surrounding disk rains down onto the dust-obscured protostar and engorges it. The material is superheated and shoots outward from the star in opposite directions along an uncluttered escape route -- the star’s rotation axis.” The lightsaber star is located in an area called the Orion B molecular cloud complex, a region of nebulae, young stars, gas and dust within the constellation of Orion at 1,350 light-years away from Earth. NASA’s, John Grunsfeld, an astronaut who has completed five space shuttle missions, said, “Science fiction has been an inspiration to generations of scientists and engineers, and the film series Star Wars is no exception.”

FREAKY

FOREST

A forest in Romania could potential be the most supernatural place in the world following a series of scary events that have occurred there. The Hoia Baciu forest is also referred to as the Bermuda Triangle of Transylvania due to the many Romanians who admit they are too frightened to go there at night. The disturbing origin of the forest dates back to a shepherd and his flock of 200 sheep who all disappeared mysteriously. Trees within the Hoia Baciu forest are strangely curved and there is a large clearing where no trees grow, which according to one legend is protected by spirits. UFO sightings have been linked to the area with one photo taken in 1968 by biologist, Alexandru Swift, showing a clear disc in the sky. Various people who have braved entry to the forest claim to have experienced uncontrollable anxiousness with other stories reporting occurrences of paranormal lights and colours. Another alleged disappearance within the forest includes that of a five-year-old girl who vanished only to reappear five years later with her clothes in perfect condition and unaged.

SEVEN-YEAR-OLD POLICE CHIEF A boy who donated $250 to his local Detroit Police Department’s K-9 Unit was recently sworn in as the official police chief for one day. Seven-year-old, Carter Widmer, son of Detroit lieutenant, John Widmer, was given a tailor-made uniform along with the power to boss around his father during an eight-hour shift. Carter was declared “Chief for the Day” by the official chief, James Craig, with his duties including being flown to headquarters by helicopter, handcuffing his dad and spending quality time with a police dog. Carter’s mother, Kelly, explained her son “was hoping for a German shepherd for Christmas, but when that didn’t work out, he donated his Christmas money to the department’s K-9 Unit... That’s when the chief appointed him as chief for a day.” With a dream to follow in his father’s footsteps within the world of law enforcement, Carter’s next decision will be whether to work alongside the K-9 Unit or within the SWAT team. When interviewed about the experience, Carter simply described it as “really cool”.

SNAKE CATCHER SUCCESS

An Australian snake catcher has secured a role in a new British television show in an attempt to raise awareness of the reptile world. In the reality program, a group of potential British “pest” experts will gain experience with catching snakes and other tasks set in Australia with Sunshine Coast based, Richie Gilbert, leading the way. Gilbert developed a 30,000 strong following on his Facebook page from posting his snake encounter videos and stories, saying, “I’ve always wanted to do my own show or documentary, but, I wanted to make sure the right messages were put across.” With a passion to educate people properly about snakes, Gilbert has rejected a number of previous television offers which he believes “wanted to sensationalise things.” The television series is expected to launch in the United Kingdom this year. During his regular job, Gilbert oversees a team of around 12 snake catchers on the Sunshine Coast who work seven days a week removing snakes from properties in the area.

Inferno Exotic Supercar

From the land of cactus and Corona comes a sick, cartoonish supercar project called the Inferno Exotic Car (yes, that’s the name). Five years ago, the country boasted only one sports car: the Mastretta MXT, then came the Vuhl 05 a couple of years ago. And now, a third Mexican sports car manufacturer is giving it a crack - with styling straight from Hot Wheels! To show they weren’t messing around, the Mexican makers gave the design responsibilities to Italian

Chief Designer Antonio Ferraioli, who has worked on the Lamborghini Asterion, Veneno Coupe, and Aventador Superveloce - not bad! Now get this, the bodywork is a mixture of Zinc, Aluminium and Silver, otherwise known as ‘metal foam’. This ‘foam’ is a stretchable metal, able to stretch to 100 times its original size in order to

absorb impacts! This means it will improve security, with the strength of an armoured vehicle, but with a big weight difference - sorta like Flubber! For power, Inferno uses a twin turbo V8 engine blasting out a quite epic 1,400

horsepower and a top speed of 395km/h! 0 to 100 km/h? Umm, that should be taken care of in less than 3 seconds. If those stats don’t get you excited, its lateral acceleration figure of 1.33G - the same as a Ferrari 458 Speciale - will surely make

you stand up and clap! Antonio’s design matches the extreme performance with plenty of cut out aerodynamic parts, a large rear spoiler and five rear exhausts, while the matt grey and blood red colouring matches the supercar name! With a killer body and

superior specs, production is predicted to start next year, with the company setting its sights on Italy for production. The price tag at this point is unknown, but one thing is for certain, this raging Inferno will smoke the doors off the upcoming Bugatti Chiron!

POKÉMON SUPER MYSTERY DUNGEON

We love it when developers try new gameplay ideas with their long running series, and this spin-off to the main strategy RPG Pokémon games is a lot of fun. Unlike the usual titles, you do not play as a trainer, but instead choose from a huge library of Pokémon and play as the creature itself. The action unfolds from a top-down perspective, and while there is a large main area to explore, it’s not a case of moving anywhere you want. Instead, you follow a grid-like pattern, with your chosen Pokémon leading your party members. There are characters to meet, items to collect and, of course, battles to be had, which unfold in the classic turn-based style of usual Pokémon games.

3DS

opportunities to use team-up attacks. With 720 Pokémon to discover, a pretty funny story and good graphics, fans will have a great time.

POKÉMON RUMBLE WORLD

A double dose of Pokémon this month, with a game that originally released on the eShop last April arriving in full boxed form. What’s particularly cool about this is that the extra content you had to pay for in the original game is now included on the cartridge, so you get access to everything for one price. The game itself stars your Mii character, who is enlisted

WORDS BY CHRIS STEAD

The meat of the experience, however, is in the randomly generated dungeons, where you will find lots of enemies, special items and good

by the king to capture more Pokémon with the help of his pet Pikachu. Over 700 Pokémon are available in the game, including legendary critters and mega-evolving ones, although they are all in toy form. It’s also not turn-based like the main game series either, and instead is a super-fast action game where you

play as the Pokémon beatingup other critters with melee attacks and special moves. Items play a bit role in this game, with plenty to find, buy and use to help you on your way, and we like the way you can travel to new locations using a hot air balloon. If you want an action-focused Pokémon experience, look no further.

DOWNWELL

The latest mobile sensation has a very simple story. You play a young boy falling down a well. That’s it. But how far can you go? This is not just any normal boy, either. He has gun boots, and can shoot short bursts of bullets downwards as he falls. This is really important, because the well is filled with all kinds of crazy beasts, like bats, frogs, floating brain things and snails with spikes all over their shells. By blasting these guys, avoiding dangers and finding collectables, you will collect gems that can be spent in shops along the way to get better equipment, weapons and power-ups. Plus, as you finish each level, you get other perks to choose from that improve your performance. The retro graphics and music

are very cool, and the simple controls work a treat on the touchscreen. It’s amazing how addictive and fun such a simple

PROJECT X ZONE 2

This rather unique strategy game mashes a bunch of characters from a range of games by Sega, Namco, Nintendo and Capcom into one experience. In all there are 58 characters, and while many of them come from adult games that you may not have played before, there are still plenty of familiar faces

including Mega Man, Ryu, Lucina and Chun-Li. There are two parts to the action, with the main battle map involving turn based positioning of your forces. When it’s time to fight, however, the action zooms into a 2D fighting game – kind of like Street Fighter – where the two paired characters in your unit fight against the paired

idea can be, and the randomly generated wells ensure each playthrough is different. Totally worth getting.

character from the enemies unit. The controls here are just as you would expect from a fighting game. This mix of gameplay styles works really well on the 3DS, and there is even an original story to follow that manages to make the characters more enjoyable. If you like your action games with a bit more thinking involved, check it out.

THE

BIG

QUESTION

CAN YOU BE A GAMES ADDICT?

The answer is yes; you can become a games addict. In fact, you can become an addict to

anything, and gaming is no different. If you feel like you always have to be playing a certain game even though you are not having fun anymore, then that could be a sign that you need to take a break. If you start missing cool stuff like trips to the beach or friend’s birthdays because of a video game, then you definitely need to take a break! Many modern video games are designed to make you keep coming back and playing. Multiplayer games like Splatoon, RPGs like World of Warcraft and creation games like Minecraft don’t have

an end. You don’t reach the last bad dude in the story and then look for another game to play. You can just keep on gaming and you will level-up, unlock new things, find new areas and create new stuff. Developers don’t want you to start playing other games, so they make their games last forever. There are even hospitals being set up all around the world at the moment to help people who feel that they are addicted to

video games get help, so it can get pretty serious. But it’s high unlikely that you are addicted to gaming, so don’t worry too much. We have a rule we like to follow at KRASH; if the sun is out, then get outside and wait till later to play your games. Stick to this rule and you will be fine. WORDS BY CHRIS STEAD

If you like your games and play a lot, then at some point you’ve probably heard a person say “hey, you’re addicted to games.” Maybe it was your mum, or your sister, or a friend. People who don’t play games often don’t understand why people who like video games spend so much time playing them. You know and we know why - it’s because gaming is great fun! But is it actually possible to like it too much? Can you really become addicted to video games?

GAMES LIKE MINECRAFT

MINECRAFT IS ONE OF THE MOST AWESOME GAMES EVER RELEASED AND NO DOUBT YOU’VE ALREADY SPENT HUNDREDS OF HOURS CRAFTING YOUR OWN PLACE IN ITS PIXELATED LANDSCAPE. BUT ARE THERE ANY OTHER GAMES OUT THERE THAT ALLOW YOU TO BE SO CREATIVE? YOU BET, AND HERE ARE SOME OF OUR FAVOURITES.

WORDS BY CHRIS STEAD

CREATIVERSE (PC) It looks a lot like Minecraft, but this is a much bigger and expansive game world to play around with. There is a focus on adventure as you explore the huge variety of locations, and there is an amazing array of crafting options, from recipes and building materials to gadgets like transporters. You can even start your own farm, or take down evil forces in caves. Of course, you can do it all with your friends, too. Oh Yeah, did we mention it was free?

DISNEY INFINITY 3.0 (PC, PS4, PS3, XBO, 360, WII U, IOS, ANDROID) Although it has story and level-based adventures, theToy Box mode in Disney Infinity is one of the most amazing places in gaming to flex your creative muscles. With a huge variety of tools, you’re free to make almost anything you can think of, from mini-games, to action adventures, to epic castles and even race tracks. It’s only made cooler by the fact that you can do it all with famous characters and worlds from Pixar, Star Wars, Marvel and more.

ROBLOX (PC, IOS, ANDROID, MAC) This rather massive game combines sandbox creation gameplay with an MMO experience. Players can create their own worlds, including making scripted setpiece moments, which other players can enter whenever they like. You could have hundreds or thousands of people exploring your world at once, and as such this is a highly social creation game experience.

SCRAPS (PC) This is a car combat game, where you get to fully create the vehicle you will drive into battle. It’s not just about adding in as much armour and weapons as you possible can either, as you have to think smartly about weight distribution, and how to balance it all so that the car still handles well. Plus the heavier your car is, the slower it will go so there is lots of strategy involved. Plenty of fun for creative car lovers.

33 CITIES: SKYLINES How about you apply your creative skills to something realistic and modern. In this game, you need to set about creating an entire city, looking after all the important infrastructure such as roads and electricity and services such as schools and post offices. It’s incredibly deep and you can spend tens of hours fine-tuning and building the perfect city. It will change the way you look at the towns and cities around you, too.

SUPER MARIO MAKER (WII U) This is the latest super popular creation game, and no points for guessing why. It’s all about building your own Mario Bros. levels after all! The level editor gives you full access to all the items, enemies and objects from the Mario games and using the GamePad touchscreen to move things around and try out different ideas is easy. Levels can be shared with friends of course, or you can spend hours trying out other gamers’ levels.

PROJECT SPARK (XBO, PC) This visually stunning (and free-to-play) creation game is completely openended, allowing you to make anything you want in a glorious, colourful world. What’s particularly fun is using the Kinect camera to add voices and even act out animations that you can add to AI characters in the game. It’s one of the easiest creation games to use, too, because the program is smart enough to make large visual changes quickly.

TERRARIA (PS4, XBO, PC, PS3, 360, WII U, 3DS, VITA, ANDROID, IOS) Possibly the best known Minecraft alternative, this has a very similar gameplay mix of creation, exploration and survival, but places it in a 2D platformer style of gameplay. There is a real sense of freedom in this game – you can even summon bosses when you want to test out your combat skills. With a good mix of locations and a randomly generated starting landscape, this is definitely worth checking out by any Minecraft fans.

NINTENDO NX

WORDS BY CHRIS STEAD

THE WAIT TO GET MORE INFORMATION ON THE NEXT MACHINE BY NINTENDO, CALLED THE NX, IS ALMOST TOO MUCH TO BARE. EVERY MONTH MORE RUMOURS CROSS OUR PATH AND HERE ARE THE LATEST.

So the big question that has emerged this month is whether or not the NX is in fact and actual console or not. Nintendo has never said it is a console, and only referred to it as the next “platform” it is working on. Could it actually be something to do with virtual reality? Or a new handheld? Or something to do with the Amiibo figurines? What about a microconsole that streams games from the PC or mobiles? Nintendo did come out with an interesting quote this month; the company said “The NX is something unique and different: it’s not the next Wii or Wii U.” So that very much sounds like it isn’t a console after all. But, get this. A developer who is working on games for the new machine recently called the NX a console in an interview. So who is telling the truth? The other thing we have to go off is patents. These are created when Nintendo designs something and has it registered legally so nobody else can steal the idea. Sometimes these lead to nothing, but other times they can be the first indication of what is going to come out. Check out these images then, which show a strange controller that looks to be a complete touchscreen on the front, with buttons on the back and bumpers on the side. There is also another patent that shows a secondary device connecting to a game console. This suggests that the NX could be something that joins with the Wii U to do something like add more power or stream games. It’s all very interesting and we will keep you posted as more news arrives.

ANY IDEAS? If you think you know what the NX will look like, draw it and send us your picture so we can check it out.

CATCHING UP ON THE

37

VIRTUAL REALITY IF YOU DIDN’T KNOW, VIRTUAL REALITY IS GOING TO BE THE BIGGEST THING IN GAMING THROUGH 2016. THREE HUGE NEW HEADSETS ARE COMING OUR WAY – THE OCULUS RIFT, THE PLAYSTATION VR (WHICH USED TO BE CALLED THE MORPHEUS) AND THE HTC VIVE. WE THOUGHT WE’D GIVE YOU A QUICK CATCHUP ON ALL THE LATEST NEWS FROM THE BIG THREE.

THE HTC VIVE Perhaps the quietest of the three headsets has been the HTC Vive, which is being created by a phone company (HTC) and a game company (Valve) together. At one point it was supposed to be out by now, so we were wondering what could have caused the delay. Now we know. The company has come out and said that it has made a huge technological discovery and it wanted to start the headset again to include it. How exciting is that? It should still be out by April, too, which is even better yet.

PLAYSTATION VR The PlayStation VR headset will work with the PS4, but it will need more than just the console to work. A second box will come with the headset, which is about the same size as the original Wii, and it will also sit under your TV next to your PS4. The VR headset will connect to this second box, and that box will then connect to the PS4. This is because all the computer power needed to run virtual reality is in the second box, which leaves your PS4 free to play the game in the same quality you are used to.

OCULUS RIFT

WORDS BY CHRIS STEAD

We already knew that an Xbox One controller was going to come bundled with every Oculus Rift headset, but there is also going to be a specific hand-based controller to use as well. It’s called Oculus Touch, and it looks super cool. You get one for each hand, with simple buttons and a stick on each, and motion-based support. This will allow you to actually move and interact with the virtual world in a truly realistic way.

One of the coolest things we can imagine doing in virtual reality is going into space, and what better way to do that than in a space ship fighting like it’s Star Wars. One of the most exciting aspects about this dogfighter, is that it is an MMO, so you will not be flying through empty space, but one filled with plenty of other human controlled planes. However, in virtual reality you truly feel like you are on the side of a cliff and the threat of falling is real. It’s heart-pounding stuff and the graphics look amazing. We’re also excited to see how this game makes use of the Oculus Touch controllers that you hold in each hand.

EA GL E FL IG HT

(OC UL US RIF T, HT C VIV E, PL AY ST AT ION VR ) Want to know what it is like to be an Eagle? This game, as the name suggests, is about flying as an Eagle. It is made by the guys who created Assassin’s Creed and started life as just a demo, but was so cool it is becoming a full game. You fly over the streets of a ruined Paris that’s overtaken by animals, attacking other birds and just exploring. We’re not sure what else will be involved with this game, but we cannot wait to see what it is like to fly.

GRAN TURISM O SPORT (VIRTUAL REALITY) It’s already one of the most amazing racing game series ever made, just how awesome is it going to be in virtual reality. We know the game will look stunning, and we know the racing will feel just perfect, so what will it be like to sit in the driver’s seat? Well we have played other racing games in virtual reality and it wicked fun as you can look right into the corners as you jam on the throttle, and check over your shoulder for other cars. We can’t wait.

BATT LEZO NE

(PLAYS TATION VR) This futuristic tank warfare game is all about blasting things to smithereens, which is something we love doing. The tanks actually hover, and zip along the neon landscape quite fast. You need to look everywhere for threats, and then target and blast them before they get you. What makes the game so much fun is that you can look and shoot in different directions, allowing you to always keep one step ahead of the action?

WHAT’S

Wouldn’t you know it! Just in time for the start of school, a huge month in gaming to enjoy after you’ve finished your homework.

PS4, XBO, PC

UNRAVEL As soon as we heard about Unravel we were fascinated. It looks like a typical indie game, with a quirky character and sidescrolling, platformer gameplay. However, it’s not an indie game. It’s made by EA, the blockbuster developer behind huge titles like Need for Speed, FIFA and Star Wars Battlefront – not the place you’d expect this type of game to come from. No wonder the visuals look so amazing! The game stars Yarny, a weird looking dude who is like a ball of wool come to life. When we first meet him, he has only just become alive, and he is in wonder at the environment around him. So part of the fun of this game is helping Yarny discover new things about the world. He travels through simple, yet real locations – which, as mentioned, look truly stunning – solving puzzles that help him on this

way. The music and pace is deliberately slow and relaxing, with the focus on simply exploring. The thing is, Yarny is unwinding. As he moves through the world, he leaves a trail of wool behind him. This ties into the story, but also becomes a critical part of the gameplay as you will use this trail of wool to get past the various obstacles. A classic way you can do this is to attach the wool to something so you can swing over gaps. However, there are much more inventive

situations, too. For example, you can tie the wool between two objects to create a trampoline you can jump off. Or attach it to something that can move to pull it down or around to open up paths. It all works wonderfully, using realistic physics to help you play with the environment to solve each puzzle. Good on EA for trying something different and going with an indie-like game that looks and feels so magical.

DID YOU KNOW? Before Unravel, the developer worked on motion-based games like Move Fitness and The Fight – Lights Out.

NARUTO SHIPPUDEN ULTIMATE NINJA STORM 4 Despite being the sixth in the Naruto fighting series, Ninja Storm 4 feels different. For starters, it’s the first built for the new consoles, which means faster gameplay, more spectacular visual effects on the epic attacks and larger 3D arenas with more activity to battle it out in. Plus, it’s also the last one the developer has planned for the series, with the story playable from the start right up to the final moments from the Naurto TV show. The gameplay will be instantly familiar to fans, with the same button combinations for each of the 100-plus characters making it easy

GAMESTA HEAT

to play, even if the moves themselves are different. Wall running returns for the first time in ages, giving you more strategy options when at the side of the arena. Weapons and armour can now be damaged, too, especially by the new elemental attacks like fire. But our favourite addition is the ability to swap character mid-battle, or even tag

GAMESTA VERDICT: NEXT-GEN NAURTO

PS4, PC

STREET FIGHTER V The oldest and most revered series in the fighting genre returns and if you like the biff, this old-school classic still packs a punch. It remains a 2D fighter, although the gorgeous cartoony visuals make the battle arenas feel fully alive. The gameplay is quick to pick up, with straightforward special move button combos and the ability to block by just pressing

backwards. However, it’s tough to master, with each character having different button combos and abilities, so plenty of strategy is needed to win. We like that, as it means you can keep getting better the more your practice. The new V-Gauge system adds new special attacks unique to each character that we really like too, as they can be used to plug up their weaknesses when you really need help.

DID YOU KNOW? Street Fighter V offers cross-platform multiplayer; so you can be on PS4 and play against people on PC, and vice-versa, online.

16 characters have been confirmed so far for the launch (including four new characters and legends like Ryu, M. Bison, Ken, Dhalsim and Zangief), and a further six coming out as DLC in the future. It’s a knock out!

MIGHTY NO. 9 After many delays, this month we finally get this spiritual successor to Mega Man. When we say successor, we mean that it is not really a Mega Man sequel, but instead a new game made by the same guy who created Mega Man, which follows the same style of gameplay that made the original series so popular. That’s actionfocused, 2D platforming, by the way! The hero is Beck, the ninth unit in a set of mighty combat robots. When an evil dude hacks into the world’s robots and unleashes a virus, Beck is the only one immune who can take

GAMESTA HEAT

them all down. Not just the other mighty combat robots, but normal machines, too. Primarily a corridor shooter, this is fast-paced gaming, as you blast enemies to stun them and dash through them to take them out, trying to set-up combos as you go. GRAVITY RUSH REMASTERED Sony has been doing an excellent job bringing great games from the last generation to the PS4 and this is one of those games. Although there have been plenty of Digimon games before, this is the first to actually make it to consoles and – as a result – it’s easily the best looking yet - we love the way it makes you feel like you are in a digital world. It’s a really interesting RPG game, as you can explore a 3D environment, but the

camera is fixed. When not exploring, you can find yourself in classic turn-based battles, using your party of Digimon wisely to gain victory. Slowly you will level them up and eventually evolve them into more powerful beasts. If you’re looking for something a bit older than Pokémon, this is definitely worth a look.

GAMESTA VERDICT: CYBER BULLIES

WORDS BY CHRIS STEAD

Gamers everywhere were surprised when EA announced that the super popular top-down strategy game Plants vs. Zombies was making the move from mobiles to consoles. Especially when it turned out the game was becoming a thirdperson online multiplayer shooter! However, the over-the-top Plants vs. Zombies warfare proved to be great fun. With bright cartoony visuals, it was the fact you had different classes on both teams with varying weapons and abilities that made it all work, requiring team-work and strategy for victory. Murphy is super y d d u B , rt o p x e ie Auss e NXT ring! th to in s p te s e h friendly… until

KRASH: What were you like at school? Murphy: I was a skinny redhead who used to get bullied a bit but I always had wrestling to fall back on. Wrestling was like my best friend. KRASH: How did you get noticed by WWE? Murphy: I worked the independent wrestling scene in Australia, doing shows every weekend until I eventually saved up enough money for a WWE tryout in Florida. There were about 85 wrestlers from all over the world trying out

but I was the only one lucky enough to be signed. KRASH: What’s a typical day like for you now? Murphy: I head down to the WWE Performance Centre at about 8am where we hit the gym and do a workout for about an hour and a half. After lunch, we get in the ring for about 3 to 3.5 hours to practice our conditioning and then we do promo classes, like talking in front of a camera and character development — all the things it takes to become a WWE Superstar. Basically it’s

go, go, go. It’s a tough life but I wouldn’t change it for the world. KRASH: What match would you most like to re-live? Murphy: Winning the Tag Team Championships with my Tag Team partner Blake. Winning a WWE championship is huge and not many people get to do it in their lifetime. My other favourite moment was when we had NXT Takeover in Brooklyn, New York. It was a sell-out and, although the outcome wasn’t what we wanted because we lost to The Vaudevillains, it was in front of a crowd of 16,000 people so it was great just getting out there and being a part of that. KRASH: Which WWE Superstars were you most excited to meet? Murphy: Meeting the Undertaker was pretty awesome and he ended up watching some of our matches when he came to a live event so that was cool. Meeting Stone Cold Steve Austin at the Wrestlemania 32 pre-sale party in Dallas was amazing too. They’re both guys I looked up to when I was watching wrestling as a little guy. KRASH: Are they like their WWE characters in real life? Murphy: Yeah everyone’s character is pretty much like them but turned up a notch. What you see is what you get with just about everyone.

KRASH: What would you say to KRASH Heads who’ve seen your success and want to follow in your footsteps? Murphy: The business is very demanding on the body so the first thing is to get healthy, get in shape and eat right. Not just for a couple of days, but make it a lifestyle. Find a wrestling school and never give up on your dreams. No matter how many times I was told I was too small to make it in wrestling I never gave up. If you want to get

somewhere you have to keep striving. KRASH: What do Americans do that make you laugh? Murphy: Sometimes people think that if they put “Mate” at the end of a sentence that it’s Australian but it doesn’t work that way. It only works if

WWE

you’re actually Australian and you say mate. KRASH: Do you have a girlfriend? Murphy: Yes, I’m a taken man. KRASH: How can KRASH Heads attract a girlfriend? Murphy: Be a gentlemen, open the door and don’t swear.

WE CHAT TO THE STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS STAR,

JOHN BOYEGA ABOUT TAKING ON THE BIGGEST ROLE OF HIS CAREER, HAN GING OUT WITH HARRISON FORD, WHAT HE’D LOVE TO TAKE FROM

GEORGE LUCAS’ PLACE AND MUCH MORE KRASH: Hey John, tell us about the call letting you know that you’d be playing Finn. John: Well, I actually met [director] J.J. Abrams in a restaurant in London and that’s when he told me I was going to get the part. He was there with Larry Kasdan (Force Awakens writer, Lawrence Kasdan) and Larry was there for support and he told me about the audition process so far, how everything has gone and how excited he is. After that he just broke it to me that I was going to be the new star of Star Wars. KRASH: And then? John: And then the world froze for that split second and it was one of the most touching moments in my life. KRASH: Did you know this was going to happen? John: Well, I went through seven months of reading and auditioning for the part and thought there must be a reason why they keep asking me back so many times. I felt I had developed a really good Finn for them to choose from, my confidence was definitely growing, and J.J. and I got on really well too. But yeah, nothing prepares you for when they actually tell you. KRASH: How did you celebrate the news? Was it a big party with your mates? John: No, not at all, I actually

spent time with my family and just took it all in. It was just such a crazy shock, man. I had no idea I was going to hear that news. It was a random meeting where J.J. just told me to come to this restaurant and next thing you know I’m in one of the biggest movie franchises ever. KRASH: Once they told you, was there one thing you were looking forward to most about playing Finn. John: Yes, mixing with the old cast and generation of Star Wars characters and seeing how that would work with the newbies. This was one of the things that made me feel very optimistic and it really lived up to my expectations. KRASH: Out of all the legendary original Star Wars actors who were you most looking forward to meeting? John: Oh, H. Ford, of course! I’m a big fan of Harrison Ford so to actually be in a position to be able to watch him work and perform in his costume and just to be able to get to know him and all that stuff, is unbelievable. KRASH: Was he the most awesome of the original cast to hang out with? John: They were all awesome. I’d never met any of them before so I didn’t have any preINTERVIEW BEN McKELVEY PHOTOGRAPHED BY BRIAN BOWEN SMITH

BOYEGA assumptions. They were warm and jolly and, more importantly, they were open to carrying Star Wars onwards from 30-plus years. And that in itself is such a great thing. They all told us it was going to be a life-changing experience, and that it will be with us forever, but the most fundamental thing is that considering we are carrying on the series this will be our own experience. It’s also the first time Star Wars will exist in the age of social media. KRASH: Last March Harrison Ford crashed one of his planes but lived to tell the tale. Has he ever taken you on one of his joyrides?

John: Um… no, I think I’ll stay away from that. He has spoken to me about his planes, though. I’m actually very interested in planes and we had a pilot discussion. One of my friends is studying to be a pilot and I find it all very intriguing. KRASH: How was it on the set when you’d heard that Harrison had crashed? John: It was worrying, everyone wanted to know if he was OK, and obviously they made alterations to the schedule to make sure Harrison was OK, but I was glad he was fine and recovered quickly. KRASH: It seems Carrie Fisher is having lot of fun doing all the press and publicity for The Force Awakens. John: Oh yeah, she definitely is, but she has a lot of fun with everything. She is a really fantastically fun person. She’s also very smart, a great conversationalist and has a lot to say about history and what she’s learnt over the years. She shares all kinds of things and it’s brilliant. There’s a lot to learn from her. KRASH: You, Daisy and Oscar will be forever tied the same way Carrie Fisher, Harrison Ford and Mark Hamill are forever tied. Did you feel any pressure to like them instantly? John: No pressure at all, you just want to make sure you all get along. Disney aren’t just going to cast anyone and they made time for us to get to know each other. And they cast some really cool people in this film and this made getting along with each other really easy. KRASH: The original Star Wars cast said that George Lucas’ directing style could be boiled

55

down to “faster and more intense.” How would you boil down J.J. Abrams’ directing style? John: J.J.’s style is that he’s a fan of characters, and this is one of his main fixations, but he also had a great nerd approach to Star Wars fandom. He knows how to make a movie and a scene a lot better not just based on his knowledge but also based on the new ideas he had for this movie franchise. He’s also an actor’s director and brings a lot of energy on the set too. KRASH: Speaking of energy, if you had the powers of The Force what would you use them for? John: For getting the remote control so I wouldn’t have to keep on getting up all the time! I would do A LOT of stuff with these powers, like let The Force drive my car while I sat in the passenger seat. KRASH: Out of all the actors who have played Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader, who would you want to have a coffee with the most – Jake Lloyd, Hayden Christensen, James Earl Jones or David Prowse? John: It would definitely be James Earl Jones because he would have a lot to say and he also voiced one of my mostloved characters in one of my favourite animated movies, The Lion King. I would love for him to speak to me in that voice. It would be so epic to meet Aslan. KRASH: Finally, if you could have one thing from George Lucas’ Skywalker Ranch residence what would it be? John: Oh, that big, bronze Yoda. I think they have it out the front. I’d definitely love that.

FREAK OUT

THE BALD TRUTH Some animals suit having no hair, like elephants for example. Others look downright freaky, like these strangely naked critters.

NAKED BUNNY This cute bunny was born in 2009 and he instantly became an Internet sensation for being bald. Fortunately, after three months he grew his first coat and turned out to be as normal as his fluffy siblings.

SPHYNX CAT The Sphynx is a type of cat developed through selective breeding. Their skin is the colour their fur would be. Because they have no coat, they lose more body heat than coated cats, so they feel warm when you touch them.

SKINNY PIG

MOULTING PENGUIN

Is it a shaved guinea pig? A baby hippo? A naked rat mole? No, it’s a ‘skinny pig’ and these mutants are proving popular pets in America. Skinny pigs are born without any fur and will never grow any on their body, except for a little on their noses and feet when they get older. They’re a new breed of guinea pig (just smaller and less hairy) that scientists created in a lab for research.

Penguins moult (lose their feathers) annually but, unlike most penguins who lose their feathers gradually over a few weeks, Ralph sheds his coat all in one go. This leaves him vulnerable to freezing winter temperatures so surfing brand O’Neill came up with a penguin-friendly wetsuit for Ralph so he can play with his friends at Marwell Wildlife centre in England.

FREAK OUT

57

LUCKY WOMBAT Orphaned baby wombat Leah became an internet sensation after her carer Kim Hunter shared ridiculously cute pictures of her online. Until Leah could recover enough to grow her own fur, Kim kept her on a heated mat.

FEATHERLESS CHICKEN

CHINESE CRESTED DOG

Created by scientists at the Hebrew University in Israel, ‘ready to cook’ featherless chickens don’t need to be plucked. Animal welfare groups are unimpressed with the experiment as they claim the feathers were important to protect chickens against sunburn and parasites.

This breed of dog comes in two varieties: Hairless (with hair on its head, tail and feet) and Powderpuff (with hair all over). Freakily, the two types often come from the same litter. Oh and the hairless variety is prone to blackheads — eeew!

SPINELESS HEDGEHOG This is Betty, a cute bald hedgehog from Foxy Lodge rescue centre, UK. The cause of her baldness is unknown but she is healthy and loving life as a baldie.

SKATING TRICK

THIS IS THE BASICS. LOTS AND LOTS OF PRACTICE. THE FASTER YOU CAN PUSH THE FURTHER YOU’LL TRAVEL AND THE MORE FUN IT IS.

STEP 3: Start running! As you run, bend down and have the back wheels on the ground rolling. Keep holding onto the nose of your board.

STEP 4: Let go of the board with your hand and throw it a little forward in front of you so that your right leg can step onto the front of the board and straight into pushing mode.

STEP 5: Make sure you pu t your front foot, wh ich automatically beco mes your steering foot directly in the centr e of the board, otherw ise the board will turn away from you as soon as you get on. Push! Like there’s no tomorrow, fly lik e the wind and pull off tha t trick. Congratulatio ns!

Running and then jumpin g on your board is a good way to get the speed you need to do your tric k in a small space. This is just anothe r way of getting on your board tha t takes a bit of practice and can loo k cool too.

ne school morning I was mucking around with my little brother, and while I was waiting for Mum to get ready to take me to school I put on her pink slippers and was being silly dressing up and making my brother laugh. Anyway, Mum realised we were running a bit late and rushed me into the car. I got out at school and started walking down to my classroom and heard kids laughing and looked down and I still had Mum’s pink slippers on over my school socks. Mum had already driven away so I had to take the slippers off and explain to the teacher why I had no shoes and wait for Mum to drop them back to me. It was so embarrassing! Jez.
