Kenyan Stakeholders Executive Visit

2017

Delegation from the Kenyan Parliament and the Kenya Nuclear Electricity Board Visit to Texas 21 - 26 May 2017

The Nuclear Power Institute (NPI) at Texas A&M University organized and delivered an executive visit to Texas for stakeholders from Kenya, including members of the Kenyan parliament’s Energy Committee, a member of the national press, and representatives of the Kenyan Nuclear Electricity Board. The purpose of the executive visit was to interact with stakeholders in Texas and learn more about nuclear waste management. Participants attended a series of lectures and engaged in a panel discussion focused on nuclear waste management, hearing from experts about the approach to nuclear waste management in the U.S. and in Texas. They also heard perspectives from U.S. stakeholders, including local elected officials, the local business community, the U.S. federal government, U.S. government agencies, representatives of the U.S. nuclear industry, and local public schools. The delegation traveled to Bay City, Texas, site of the South Texas Project Nuclear Operating Company, where they met with county judges from Matagorda and Wharton counties and the local chamber of commerce to discuss the impact of the nuclear plant on communities in the area. They also toured the Nuclear Power Technology Program at Wharton County Junior College, which offers several technical degree programs that were created through a partnership with the nuclear industry to train technicians in nuclear power-related fields. In Glen Rose, Texas, the delegation toured the Comanche Peak Nuclear Power Plant and spoke with county judges from Hood and Somervell counties, where the power plant is located. They had lunch with students at Glen Rose High School who are participating in NPI outreach programs.

While at Texas A&M, they toured the Texas A&M Nuclear Science Center, which houses a 1 MW research reactor and associated research facilities. They also visited the Texas A&M Central Utility Plant, an on-site power generation plant that serves almost 70% of the campus electricity load. They took a tour of the Texas Engineering Extension Service (TEEX) Disaster City facility, the world’s largest search and rescue facility and visited the George Bush Presidential Library and Museum.
