IAEA - NPI Educator Fellowship
2015
IAEA Educator Fellowship October 19 - 29, 2015
From October 19 – October 29, 2015, the TEES Nuclear Power Institute (NPI) at Texas A&M University hosted a group of nine international educators as part of a 4-year International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) regional project in Asia and the Pacific region through the Department of Technical Cooperation (TC). The goal of this project is to support nuclear science and technology for secondary schools through a pilot outreach program for educators and students in Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines. During their time in Texas, the educators participated in a program designed to give enrichment experiences in engineering to educators. The participants learned how to introduce engineering concepts to their students, increase student awareness of engineering, and encourage students to consider an engineering career. The program’s mission was to excite, empower, and educate educators about engineering so they can pass on the knowledge and skills learned in their own research experience to their students. This program was also intended to support the implementation of goals identified in the RAS0065 TC Compendium Project to provide strategies and experiences of best practices in primary, supplementary, complimentary, and extracurricular curriculum materials and activities for secondary education. As part of the program, participants visited NPI educational, industry, and community partners and ed stakeholders to gain awareness of the importance st o of relationship-building in implementing successful programs that ultimately support common goals p aand objectives for human resource development iin science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) with a special focus on nuclear science technologies, awareness, and acceptance. The experiences involved: current engineering research; integration of math and the sciences methods; enhanced laboratory skills and techniques; reinforced educational research in inquiry, learning styles, and diversity; and increased understanding of student career opportunities in engineering to support the creation of activities for the lessons of nuclear science and technology.
