Nursing education in Arabia - learn while you work and play. Hi everyone, Maintaining and developing professional standards through continuing education is an important consideration for nurses today. Nurses considering working at a hospital in the Middle East want to understand the educational opportunities and support available at hospitals in the Gulf states such as Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Qatar. So I thought I would address this issue. With such high demand for skilled nurses across the Gulf due to expansion and upgrading across the region, there is a strong incentive for hospitals to provide good Continuing Professional Education (CPE) opportunities because they are keen to upskill their nursing workforce. Furthermore they want to retain staff and, if they are capable, promote them into more senior roles. Having said that, some hospitals are obviously better than others in this regard, just like back home. We can help you with this because we know which hospitals and institutions offer the best educational opportunities and support. Assuming that you go to work at a hospital we recommend, then the CPE courses can be really exceptional. • There is a huge variety of courses on offer, • The courses are internationally certified, typically out of the US • Many courses are highly subsidised, if not completely free, so that they are very inexpensive compared with Australia or NZ. Typically, the acuity of the patients you would be dealing with is quite high, compared to Australian or New Zealand standards, with complex co-morbidities being common. You will often see diseases and medical conditions that are quite rare back home and so you will gain unique clinical experience that would take years to develop at home. The other important point is that you are not just left to your own devices in the units. The hospitals we recommend typically have a clinical educator in each unit who will help you convert your book learning into sound and effective clinical practice. Educational resources can be really top notch. Many hospitals have well stocked and resourced library and resource centres including extensive online access catering to on-campus medical and nursing colleges which hospital staff can also utilise. Having all these educational opportunities available is one thing but for many nurses at home, finding time to devote to study is very difficult. In the Gulf, it is easier because our nurses find they have so much more free time. Getting to and from work is usually

very quick and since most services are provided by the hospital you don’t spend much time on chores. The social life can be fairly full-on so you might need to show some self discipline. Also, many nurses successfully undertake formal postgraduate studies such as a Graduate Certificate or a Masters degree and it is quite possible to do this with tertiary educational institutions or universities in Australia while working in the Gulf. Apart from the advantages mentioned above of undertaking this in the Gulf, the other major advantage is that you will be able to afford to pay for (say) your Masters degree because your disposable income is so much higher in the Gulf. Overall the learning and educational opportunities are really first-rate whether it be through clinical experience, CPE courses or formal post-grad qualifications. I know from my own personal experience of working in Saudi Arabia for several years, that I definitely came back a more skilled and capable nurse and I have very often heard the same report from the nurses whom I and my team have placed in the region over the last 10 years. Why you should get a Post Graduate degree in Nursing... A

Masters degree is the mark of nurses who are interested in being (highly) specialised within their chosen field. Nurses that have earned a masters degree will have better job prospects compared to nurses with just an undergraduate degree. This specialized training (provided by universities and accredited institutions) allows nurses to broaden their career prospects in advanced nursing practices, leadership roles and provides the opportunity for a career in research and higher education. A master’s trained nurse professional can gain entry into doctoral programs. These programs allow research to be conducted at the highest level of the nursing profession.

Core courses do vary by institution, however most will usually incorporate some form of nursing research, theoretical & practical concepts, leadership, communication and those focused on a particular specialisation. Working nurses wanting to earn a master’s degree may need the flexibility of an online graduate nursing program or one closest to home. How to Find Reliable Health Information on the Internet - Part One

s nurses, we often have the need to find reliable healthcare information online. Searching for evidence-based guidelines and information online can be faster and more efficient than other methods of information searching.

Our patients also go online to find healthcare information of interest to them. It has been estimated that approximately 80% of patients obtain information specific to their health from an online source (Picker Institute, 2006). There are many sites online that claim to be an authority on a certain health condition or disease. How can we as nurses ensure that the information we collect from the Internet is accurate, and how can we counsel our patients about ways to ensure the accuracy of information obtained online? There are several factors that can be taken into account when assessing a website for veracity. Consider the following: • How often is the site updated? Reputable

sites will update their content regularly, and will also provide information on how the site is reviewed. • Are references and sources used to support the information given on the site? • Who created the site? Is information offered as to the individual or organization that founded the site? • Who are the sponsors of the site? (May be found in the “About Us” section) • Is contact information or an address provided to contact the site owner or organization? • Is the web site organized around the sale of something? • Do spelling/grammatical errors abound? Numerous typos and other errors or poorly written content hints at less than accurate information. Following these simple guidelines can help you determine the likelihood that the site you are using is trustworthy. As the practice of nursing is evidence driven, it is important for us to learn how to apply a systematic method of determining the veracity of information found online.

Developing Critical Thinking Skills or many years, nursing was based on the nursing process (assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation and evaluation). Although the nursing process allowed for a more scientific approach to nursing and forced nurses to evaluate why we do what we do and to decide, based on outcome, whether given measures are effective in our nursing care, nursing now focuses on the development of critical thinking skills.

Critical thinking encourages nurses to evaluate facts, abstractions, theories, interpretations, deductions and evaluations of arguments made to help us decide what course of action to take or to shape our beliefs. Critical thinking helps us to take part in activity using our knowledge and experience to make creative decisions regarding care of our patients; it is process driven instead of focusing only on the end product. Using our critical thinking skills, we continually question our actions rather than nursing by rote. Lunney (2003) discusses seven cognitive skills described by Scheffer and Rubenfeld (2000), who studied 55 nurses who had published on critical thinking topics. These seven cognitive skills are identified as: 1. Analysing: breaking down a situation into

its parts in order to determine possible meanings 2. Applying standards: the nurse selects specific standards that he/she believes fit a particular situation, then considers how these standards can be applied and whether they are applicable to the situation 3. Discriminating: in discrimination, he nurse considers how a situation is similar to, or different from, other similar situations faced in the past 4. Information seeking: used to decide whether further information is needed and where further information can be obtained, as well as the practice of obtaining needed information 5. Logical reasoning: this step involves clustering data into meaningful groups or patterns and deciding on the relevance of individual pieces of data 6. Predicting: In this step, the nurse anticipates different outcomes that may arise from using data in different ways and considers diagnoses in relation to interventions 7. Transforming knowledge: the nurse uses knowledge gained from past experiences and adapts that knowledge to use in new situations Use of these seven cognitive skills involves critical thinking beyond the simple application of the nursing process. In using these skills, nurses will be more effective problem solvers, advocates and teachers.

The National Enrolled Nurse Association (NENA) will hold their 9th National Conference ‘Moving Mountains’ at the Hotel Grand Chancellor Hobart, October 18 & 19, this year.

Hobart August 15th 1995 was, and still is, considered by many to be the “birthplace” of NENA. This is where so many nurses came together and agreed strongly that NENA should be the voice for our level of nurse. It was then that we set ourselves the challenge of changing the way we were perceived. From those early days, we gained the respect of many in the wider nursing community who still continue to ask for, and value, the input from us. For many of us that passion and commitment is still as strong and relevant today, which is why we would love to see you there. We feel that each of you has something important to add to our profession and you may very well meet

The 15years have provided so many opportunities to highlight the value of our level of nurse at a local level and at a national one. We have challenged traditions at times and we have achieved so many rewards, so you could say that NENA and the Enrolled nursing community have “moved mountains”. Benefits of Home Health Care T

he benefits of home care are many and as the population ages and lives longer, more and more older people are opting to receive care in their home.

Being cared for in the home is often a necessity as well: due to overcrowding of hospitals and a shortage of healthcare professionals, it has become economically expedient to care for people in their homes rather than in institutional facilities. What are some of the benefits of home health care for patients? • Care is delivered at home- “there’s no place like home”, and this saying is even more apt when we are ill. Most of us prefer the comfort of familiar surroundings when we are sick, and we feel better faster in a familiar environment. • Home care helps families be togetherbeing separated from loved ones is a hardship when we are ill. No matter the age, patients are better off surrounded by loved ones, with little disruption to family life. • Home care assists the elderly in remaining independent- the longer the elderly can remain at home, the more independent they remain. We have all seen patients deteriorate physically, mentally and emotionally upon entering a nursing home- remaining in their home helps seniors remain active and happy.

• Home care postpones institutionalizationreceiving healthcare in the home helps many patients remain at home who might otherwise have been forced into institutionalized care. • Home care promotes individual freedompatients who receive home care retain their freedom of choice and power in joint decision-making. • Home care decreases stress: Patients who are able to remain at home are less stressed. High stress levels, such as may be experienced in an institutional setting, can delay healing. • Home care is a more efficient form of care- home care usually uses fewer resources than traditional hospital or nursing home care. It is less of an economic strain on society as it is usually a more cost effective means to provide necessary care. • Home care is often more preferred- home care is becoming more accepted as a viable and preferable form of care, from those requiring short term care to those requiring palliative care. Given the proper support most people opt to be at home. The above are just a few of the benefits associated with home care. Home care is a booming industry, and will probably grow significantly in the years ahead, as our elderly population continues to increase.

The Trauma Symposium is being promoted throughout Queensland to metropolitan and regional emergency physicians, surgeons, intensivists, nurses, paramedics, anaesthetists and others who work in the field of trauma. What We Do - Marthlyn’s Story Marthlyn Smith arrived with thousands of others at a screening day organised by Mercy Ships at the capital of Liberia, Monrovia. Her upper lip and part of her nose were missing as a result of a flesh eating bacterium called Noma. In a three step operation, surgeon Gary Parker restored her face to near normal appearance.

Step 1: Part of Marthlyn’s chin and bottom lip was sewn into the cavity under her nose and her tongue was sewn into the top of her mouth to create a new palate. Step 2: Her new upper lip was separated from the bottom lip and the bottom half of her tongue was cut away leaving her with a new palate

The saddest fact about healthcare in West Africa is that the medical conditions suffered there are relatively inexpensive to correct, but help is difficult to get. On board our Mercy Ship, volunteer doctors and nurses provide free medical care to the poorest of the poor, bringing renewed joy to thousands of patients each year. Mercy Ships currently has volunteer positions available for Ward and OR Nurses to circulate and scrub for our Field Service in Sierra Leone in 2011. Volunteer.
