Thanks to the McGrath Foundation, Jo is stationed at the Royal Flying Doctor Service South Eastern Section base in Broken Hill and travels across the region by plane, to support those in rural and remote areas experiencing breast cancer. Kathy Wells, Policy Manager at Breast Cancer Network Australia, said it’s normal for partners to feel overwhelmed when the woman they love is diagnosed with breast cancer. “Women often tell us that they feel shock, fear and uncertainty when diagnosed with breast cancer. We know that partners of women can also experience similar feelings,” Kathy said. “Many partners tell us that their biggest fear, at least at first, is that they may lose the person they love.” BCNA’s new booklet aims to help partners through their loved one’s breast cancer diagnosis and to help them support her during her treatment and beyond.
Breast Cancer Network Australia (BCNA) has produced a new booklet to help male and female partners of people diagnosed with breast cancer within the last 12 months.
Often partners put their own feelings aside in order to focus on helping their partner through this difficult time. It is important, however, they that look after themselves as well and BCNA’s booklet provides information and advice from other partners about how to do this.

This demand is perhaps most acute for High Dependency Unit Nurses and Intensive Care Nurses. These are highly specialist areas for which there is a shortage of suitable candidates. 10

Experienced Registered Nurses continue to be in strong demand in metropolitan and remote areas of Australia. Alex Jones, Regional Director of Hays Healthcare, explores current recruitment trends and how social media is becoming increasingly important when job hunting.
It also remains a challenge to find nurses willing to work in remote locations. Emergency Department Nurses are especially needed in remote areas. Short-term contracts are available, but remote locations are not appealing to a lot of candidates.
A shortage of experienced Registered Nurses is especially evident in the Northern Territory. Due to the transient nature of the workforce in the Northern Territory there isn’t the luxury of an on-going pool for casual work either. Outside of nursing, shortages also exist in the state for General Practitioners, Dentists, Dental Assistants and professionals from specific areas such as Occupational Therapists, Speech Therapists, Pathologists, Physiotherapists, Sonographers and Mental Health Clinicians. A recruitment trend we have fully embraced at Hays is the use of social media to help candidates find a job. When job hunting, maintaining the best personal brand possible is becoming increasingly important and involves being proactive online and offline. Your personal brand now spans your presence on social media, your relationships with past employers, your work network and personal networks, including how you work with recruiters. Harnessing your personal brand will help you demonstrate what you have to offer an employer long before you meet a recruitment consultant or potential new boss in person. It is therefore imperative that you take control and actively create and manage your personal brand. To develop a winning personal brand, first conduct a “brand review” by listing the words you believe people use to describe you. These can be good and bad characteristics. Put some thought into identifying habits you want to break and new skills you want to develop. Secondly, create and maintain a LinkedIn profile and be active in endorsing skills and asking others to endorse your skills or provide recommendations. Consider joining online groups relevant to your industry or profession or even follow industry leaders on Twitter. Better yet, start an industry-related Twitter feed or blog to share useful insights and links. Next, be sure to stay in touch with former employers as they can act as referees. Royal Flying Doctor Service Supporting Outback women when cancer strikes Foundation in a healthcare initiative to support remote Australians experiencing breast cancer. Thanks to the McGrath Foundation, a McGrath Elders Breast Care Nurse is stationed at the Royal Flying Doctor Service South Eastern Section base in Broken Hill. It’s certainly been a welcomed addition to Outback health care. Almost 14,000 women in Australia are diagnosed with breast cancer every year, according to the Breast Cancer Network of Australia. Breast cancer remains the second leading cause of cancer-related death in Australian women, accounting for 15.3 per cent of all cancer deaths in women. In 2010, there were 2,864 deaths from breast cancer. Jo Beven, McGrath Elders Breast Care Nurse.
For the 30% of women experiencing breast cancer who live outside major cities, there’s the added challenge of trying to gain information, support and treatment.
“Women can be really amazing when they are diagnosed with a life-threatening disease,” says Jo Beven, McGrath Elders Breast Care Nurse.
Jo Beven travels across the region by plane, to support those in rural and remote areas experiencing breast cancer.
“We do our best to make sure women living remotely have support as they continue to work and get back to their normal lives again.”
In the last 12 months, she has had more than 560 patient contacts, assisting about 35 women experiencing breast cancer.

The Royal Flying Doctor Service celebrated its 85th anniversary this year. The South Eastern Section has bases in Broken Hill as well as Dubbo, Mascot, Bankstown, Essendon and Launceston.
“I was talking to a lady on the phone the other day and she was at the end of her radiotherapy and planning a trip to work.
According to its 2013 annual report, outside of its highprofile emergency evacuation service, the organisation had more than 40,290 patient contacts across 4,728 primary healthcare clinics over the previous 12 months.
“As we were talking she suddenly yelled, ‘Oh my god!’. I asked what the problem was as I knew she was at the supermarket and thought she must have fallen over or something.
Jo has worked in healthcare since 1986 when she started working as a registered nurse at Broken Hill Hospital. She moved into oncology in 2000 and spent over 11 years caring for women who were experiencing cancer.
“But she told me cauliflowers were at $8. I just laughed. I was really pleased that she had started worrying about real life issues rather than her disease and the treatment.”
“Those with cancer have to travel huge distances away from home – if they can’t be treated in Broken Hill. With chemotherapy treatments happening once a fortnight in some cases, a long drive is the last thing they need. The treatment and being away from home takes a huge physical and emotional toll.

Ms Patmore took a new role within Silver Chain, as a Telehealth Nurse, with the responsibility of introducing Telehealth to elderly patients in the Geraldton area. “I had done a little of this type of work in the UK, but nothing quite as exciting, or as grassroots as this,” Ms Patmore said. Ms Patmore describes Telehealth as a way of providing first class care to a person who is living in a rural area. “My patients are able to take their own observations and send them to me live at work, so as soon as I receive them, I am able to check that everything is normal. The patients develop a greater understanding of their health condition, and manage their own health condition, rather than waiting until they are so ill they need to go to the hospital.” The project commenced in Geraldton as a result of the National Broadband Network (NBN) rollout.
“Patients will be able to use the fast broadband network, and they know that someone is on the other end looking out for them.” For this project the majority Ms Patmore’s patients are volunteers aged 65 years and over, with one or more chronic health conditions. “I am passionate about working with older people- they have a wealth of knowledge, and are so willing to share – it’s lovely to be able to help them and learn from them at the same time.” Ms Patmore is also enjoying the great lifestyle that Geraldton is able to offer to both herself and her family. “We had a great choice of schools for our son to attend, and he was made to feel very welcome right from his first day.” “The area is just beautiful- there is no pollution, beautiful blue skies, fantastic beaches, really happy people and it is a wonderful place to work. I really couldn’t ask for anything more. I am able to finish my working day at 4 o’clock and join my husband and son for a walk on the beach or to go fishing.” Ms Patmore’s experience is highlighted in a video available via the Rural Health West Choose Country program.
