Jo Muirhead is a Rehabilitation Counsellor and business coach who empowers allied health professionals to build successful, sustainable and profitable practices.
Business of 1 Get me off this Hamsterwheel! As health professionals, we run from client to client, clinic to clinic, need to need, meeting to meeting. We sense the balance of a proverbial knife edge; something great and wonderful yet something torturous and unfulfilling. Health professionals in private practice add to their list of demands exponentially. You feel like you left a job, putting everything on the line to create something that was you; unique, powerful, with incredible influence. Instead you’re turning over less cash, working twice as hard; with so much more to do. There’s no one else. Some days you have too many clients; others you don’t have enough – the cycle wearing you out. If you knew how much harder it
6
was to be self employed you would never have done this. This is the hamsterwheel, and its time to get off! It takes incredible courage to acknowledge let alone say when something isn’t working. In this day and age of social media, all we tend to see are the successes, the happy places, and the empowered self employed life where work is done by the beach and millions are made. It’s also really easy to stay in a place of being overwhelmed and paralysed; not knowing what to do next. So caught up in endless details of day to day life; the needs of our clients; the needs of our customers, that we fear even asking these questions. Instead we focus on the need to
find another career. Or move into management. Or take extended leave, only to continue to repeat the same patterns over and over again. We serve clients with the best of our abilities when we have a sound business model; sound business practices; when we are serving the client’s we can add most value to; and when we are peaceful, happy, content and so full of energy we can give what needs to be given. Yet we have this backwards; we start with the clients. We are passionate about helping them, serving them, empowering them, helping them rebuild. I know this because I am just like you. However we do this at our own expense. And in this day and age of limited resources, cost containment and fear mongering we tend to put the needs of our clients first….second…third quite honestly. Now don’t get me wrong; we face economic and resource limiting challenges, but we as helping professionals don’t have to be that challenge. For those who don’t know me, my name is Jo Muirhead and I specialise in working with entrepreneurial health professionals just like you; help them to create steady streams of clients, charge what they are worth and yet make an incredible change in the world. It’s really important to embrace this and drive change! I have definitive evidence that the more we focus on caring for ourselves, coupled with targeted and strategic approach to work and our business, the better clinicians we become, the healthier we are personally, and we create an even greater, more significant impact on the people we serve.
The beginning – yes, start with you! • • • •
Who are you? What do you love to do? What are you an expert in? What client’s give you the most satisfaction, what problems do you solve for them? (Hint – these are the clients or solutions that leave you feeling energized and excited at the end of the day; not worn out, tried and with a headache).
Please don’t diminish yourself. You are needed, our communities need us. They need us to be on top of our game; committed to serving the clients we commit to treating. You deserve this, your family deserves this, your patients and clients deserve this. Don’t stay on the Hamsterwheel. You have a choice. Learn more about how you too can build the clinical practice of your lifestyle dreams by taking advantage of the offer in this issue where you’ll not only receive a recording of a recent webinar of mine, but also receive 3 training videos to help you start “The De-Hamsterfication” process. I give away 8 free strategy sessions per month – if this page is still available, there’s still availability this month: www.new.businessof1.com.au/strategy-session/
Jo Muirhead is a Rehabilitation Counsellor and business coach who empowers allied health professionals to build successful, sustainable and profitable practices. To learn more and to join the community visit www.businessof1.com.au
Time for change You need a way forward, not a way out. We will often tell our clients to ‘get back to basics’ to ‘take the pressure off’ and to take the time to ‘heal’. Well I invite you to use your own expertise and apply it to your situation now. Burn out is not the way of the health professional. That’s a myth, a lie. You can do something about this. You can grow your practice into the fulfilling life-changing service you once dreamed of. You just need to start at the beginning.

Menzies School of Health Research New mum turns to study to help other mums in crisis
Having worked as a general nurse in Victoria, Queensland and the Northern Territory in urban, rural and remote settings for more than 20 years, Donna was desperate to move into a field where she could better understand and impact the social determinants of public health as opposed to treating the end result. “After having a child in 2008, I decided I needed a change

Donna was recently awarded the Val Asche Prize for Academic Excellence during Menzies’ 2013 AGM in recognition of her outstanding academic achievements in a public health course. Now undertaking a Master of Public Health, Donna hopes to work in sub-Saharan Africa on completion of her Masters. Donna said she also fostered a strong interest in social justice regarding Indigenous Australians. “I would like to see health professionals in Australia better trained to consider health from a sociological perspective to ensure sensitive and informed health service delivery, especially to minority groups,” she said. The Master in Public Health is offered by Menzies School of Health Research through Charles Darwin University and is taught by a mix of research active academics and public health professionals.

In some Australian states this course is required as part of obtaining a Laser Use Licence. In non-regulated states it is still strongly recommended as a way of understanding laser and IPL technology and for guidelines on necessary standard operating procedures. Many insurance companies insist all staff using a laser or IPL show proof of such Laser Safety certification before they will insure the clinic/salon. Additionally, the view of a number of experts in this profession is that regulation and qualifications in relation to IPL and laser use will only increase as industry continues to review use requirements.

Services for Australian Rural and Remote Allied Health Scholarship applications are now open! On behalf of the Federal Government’s Nursing and Allied Health Scholarship and Support Scheme, Services for Australian Rural and Remote Allied Health (SARRAH) administers the allied health component. In order to attract and retain more allied health professionals to rural areas, SARRAH provides support and opportunities for allied health professionals to update and extend their skills and knowledge, through their scholarship program. SARRAH are currently accepting scholarship applications for 2014, with one of those scholarships being Clinical Psychology. Kobie Allison was awarded the Clinical Psychology Scholarship by SARRAH in 2013. At the time of receiving this scholarship she was balancing a Masters 12
and a Doctorate whilst working three days per week as a counsellor. “This scholarship has enabled me with the necessary funds to complete a number of professional development activities such as presenting research papers and publishing journal articles, as prior to this scholarship my funds were limited,” says Kobie. Kobie has a Masters in Applied Psychology (Counselling) and is currently completing her Doctorate in Psychology (Clinical). She has released a number of research publications and presented at conferences. “I presented my Masters research titled, ‘Therapeutic
Alliance: Exploring the Concept of Safety’ From a Neuropsychotherapeutic Perspective’ on 23 February 2013 at the APS Counselling Psychology Conference in Melbourne. “The Clinical Psychology Scholarship also provided me with the available funds to cover editing fees, which are involved in publishing a journal article,” says Kobie. Kobie has worked with children and adolescents since 2008 and has a passion for supporting families with anxiety. Her special interest areas are anxiety, depression, phobias, grief and loss, school anxiety and working with families. “I recently travelled again to Melbourne to present my second research paper titled, ‘Brain-Based Trauma Intervention: The Role of Safety in Facilitating an Enriched Therapeutic Environment’ at The International Conference on Attachment and Trauma Informed Practice. “In July 2014, I will be travelling to Paris with my Masters supervisor to present my research at the 28th International Congress of Applied Psychology (ICAP). If I did not receive the gift of the Clinical Psychology Scholarship by SARRAH I would not have the funds to be able to share my research with others clinicians. “This scholarship has helped me to survive financially and to share my work with others in the hope of assisting others. Thank you SARRAH for this life-changing gift!” Applications for the Clinical Psychology Scholarship in 2014 close on 15 October 2013. Funds of $15,000 a year for a maximum of 2 years are available. Australian Mentor Suzanne Allibone and colleague Sousdey provide the Technical School for Medical Care, Phnom Penh, with their first electronic database. Photographer: Sarah Streets/Australian Volunteers International
Australian Volunteers for International Development What does data have to do with midwifery? The prospect of living and working in another country can seem daunting to some people at first, but for those who choose to volunteer overseas, it can be one of the most rewarding things they have done in their lifetime. This has been the case for Australian Mentor, Suzanne Allibone, who has spent the past 18 months in Cambodia working as a Midwifery Education Administrator for the Technical School of Medical Care (TSMC) in Phnom Penh. Suzanne’s work focuses on improving the school’s technical operational capacity, so that midwifery students trained at the institution graduate with the skills and knowledge needed to become safe practitioners.
14
For the last four years, Australian Volunteers International has placed Australian midwifery preceptor coaches and mentors at the University of Health and Science, and at various clinical sites around Phnom Penh, as part of the AusAID funded Australian Volunteers for International Development (AVID) program. The purpose of the project is to support and contribute to the Cambodian Health Strategic Plan of improving the quality of midwifery pre-service training. While the Midwifery Education Project team consists of mostly midwifery coaches and mentors, Suzanne is the only mentor who comes from an adult education and administrative background.
“Many times I have felt completely out of my comfort zone or skill level, but it’s been a wonderful challenge and I love that my colleagues have, in a relatively short space of time, trusted me enough to work both independently and collaboratively on projects that will ultimately change the culture of how things are done at the college administratively.” An important part of Suzanne’s role has been developing and implementing streamlined systems and processes for the effective coordination and management of TSMC students, as well as providing technical advice on the preparation and implementation of student assessments. “With its five umbrella departments in midwifery, nursing, laboratory, radiology and physiotherapy, many administrative tasks such as the student assessment records and transcripts, teaching timetabling and scheduling, are still manually recorded. This has made it very challenging to systematically coordinate the five departments. Together we decided an electronic database would greatly improve the efficiency of the Institution. “Now that I’m coming to the last six months of my assignment, I’m starting to see things come together that 14 months ago seemed unimaginable. Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine that I would be project managing the design and development of a database for an educational institution of 2,000 students. Nor did I imagine I would be developing a common coding system across nine curriculums to support that database.
“
As I look back at how the relationships have developed and mutual respect has grown, I’m amazed at what has been achieved with the support of my young project assistant and my host organisation.
“
“When I first arrived, I was very impressed as I watched my colleague, Mr Lim Vuthy do his job and relate to his staff, and really questioned why I was here. However, after a few months of observing ‘the TSMC way’, it became evident to us both that I could help him with the things he doesn’t have time for, such as research, strategic thinking, reporting on critical issues and providing recommendations,” Suzanne said.
“I love that every job I’ve ever had has played a part in preparing me for the past 18 months as well as giving me the confidence to have a go.” Australian Volunteers International is currently recruiting skilled professionals in all areas of health and vocational education, to work in Asia, the Pacific, the Middle East and Africa. Positions include: nursing and midwifery practitioners and educators, pharmacists, doctors, dentists, audiologists, physiotherapists, mental health professionals, lab technicians, health promoters and biomedical engineers. Through the AVID program, all volunteers receive financial support, including airfares, visas, accommodation, a living allowance, insurance, pre-departure training, and incountry and post-assignment support.
For further information see: www.australianvolunteers.com or visit www.ausaid.gov.au/volunteer for more information on the AVID program.
“As I look back at how the relationships have developed and mutual respect has grown, I’m amazed at what has been achieved with the support of my young project assistant and my host organisation.” Living and working in Cambodia has been a great privilege, Suzanne said. 15
