From the Editor... Welcome to Issue 8 The ladies that won this issue’s front cover competition are the staff from the Women’s Health Unit at Peninsula Health, Victoria. The photo was submitted by Michelle McElroy and here’s what she has to say. “We had a pink ribbon breakfast on our ward and had a bra decorating competition which was a huge success and we raised $350 for breast cancer!” Congratulations Michelle and team for winning the front cover competition with such a fun photo! We would also like to applaud the work to raise money for breast cancer. Well done! We have explored our way through the great state of Victoria to bring you all you need to know for working and studying there (page 23). We’ve put together useful directories of select hospitals, health services and universities across the state to help you start or further your career. Plus, we take a look at one Victorian nurse’s motivating and award-winning contribution to her field of nursing. For our next issue, we will be looking at the field of Mental Health Nursing. We’ll discover what’s happening now within this field, as well as what it takes to become a mental health nurse and how to get there. Stay tuned!

5 VICTORIA Feature Profile - Working and Studying in Victoria
GREAT Reasons to Work in
1. THE LIFESTYLE What doesn’t Victoria have? There are the beautiful, clean coastal beaches, the scenic rural landscapes, uninhabited native forests and the breath-taking alpines. And then there’s the booming cultural capital of Australia, aka Melbourne, known for its brilliant coffee and fresh produce and the laid back, friendly attitudes of the local Victorians. You can choose from the laid back country lifestyle that Victoria can offer, or you can choose the buzzing city lights of Melbourne. Whatever lifestyle you want, Victoria has it to offer you.
2. EDUCATION Victoria has some of the most prestigious universities that are highly recognized on a global level, let
alone in Australia, with Monash University and the University of Melbourne making it into the Top 100 List of Best Universities in the world. Victoria also happens to have the highest university participation and graduation rates in the Asian region. With a wide range of study courses on offer, including most nursing specializations on offer, your dream career can start and continue to grow in the one state.
3. THE PEOPLE Local Victorians are known as being laid-back, relaxed and friendly people. This attraction of welcoming
people is just another reason why there’s been such a population boom in the state, with an estimated 2.2% increase within a year’s time frame, and rising. It currently stands at 5.5 million people, with the population expected to expand to 6 million by the end of 2013. This is only good news for any healthcare professionals who want to stay in demand and never worry about job availabilities or furthering their careers. Victoria is the place to do just that; go further.
4. BUSINESSES ARE BOOMING The main industry strengths for Victoria include knowledge-based practices such as healthcare, medicine
and medical research. Business professionals choose Victoria because it offers advanced information and technologies, high quality professional support services, a booming economy, stable political environment, as well as a transparent regulatory system. Victoria is even the preferred location for six of the Australia’s top 10 largest employers. With businesses and industries, both small and large, taking off in Victoria consistently, employment rates will continue to increase exponentially.
5. OPPORTUNITIES Considering the population and business boom that’s still continuing in Victoria, nursing jobs are a plenty,
with fantastic opportunities available in all sectors, from public and private hospitals, to community care, private practices, general practices, specialist clinics and even a 24 hour Nurse-On-Call facility. Now that healthcare faculties are in demand with the booming population of Victoria, there really hasn’t been a better time to start or continue your nursing career in Victoria. 25

Every year, the State Nursing and Midwifery Excellence Awards held by the Victorian Department of Health publicly recognise and acknowledge the contribution that nurses and midwives make to the Victorian public health system. We take a look at one of the 2009 winners to see what the award meant to her and to find out what she has been doing since winning her award.
Jennifer Orr
// MANAGER // Aged Care Liaison Service // Western Health Jennifer won the ‘Excellence in Nursing Practice’ award at the 2009 State Nursing and Midwifery Excellence Awards by the Victorian Department of Health. It was Jennifer’s initiative, energy and tenacity that saw the successful establishment, pilot and implementation of a new ‘inreach’ service for residential aged care facilities.
The Aged Care Liaison Service has made significant improvements to the health care experience for aged care residents by providing care in their own environments, avoiding the need for unnecessary time spent in emergency departments, preventing admission to hospital and reducing the length of stay and the risk of functional decline if admission is required. Demand for the service has steadily grown and the results are impressive. To date, over 1,100 aged care facility residents referred to the service have had their acute health care needs triaged over the phone, with 63 per cent of them avoiding presentation to the emergency department and over 190 unnecessary inpatient admissions prevented. Jennifer was responsible for process development, care provision and evaluation of 30
this service, which has crossed traditional hospital boundaries by utilising a collaborative approach. Jennifer was very surprised to be nominated and when her name was announced as a winner she felt disbelief and awe at first, then was very proud to be a nurse surrounded by colleagues who are all achieving such high standards of care. Her colleagues were thrilled and their contribution was acknowledged at all times. The wider staff, particularly in the emergency departments, who engaged with the program to achieve good patient outcomes, also experienced a great deal of satisfaction. Western Health has a strong culture of high achievement and actively promotes excellence and innovation, both internally and externally. Jennifer is planning to use the substantial monetary award to assist in educating the team through conferences and short courses. Winning the award has influenced Jennifer’s career aspirations and has given her more confidence. It has also raised the profile of the Aged Care Liaison Service at Western Health. Since winning the award, Jennifer has been promoted to Manager, Immediate Response Service and is involved in the development of a service comprising residential in-reach and emergency care coordination. This is an exciting challenge for Jennifer and she looks forward to good outcomes for patients. The objective of the awards is to publically acknowledge and recognise excellence in practice by nurses and midwives in Victoria. This is part of the Victorian Government’s support for nurses and midwives. For further information and to read more inspiring stories, visit or call : // WWW.NURSING.VIC.GOV.AU // 1300 253 942

What is the Role of a Educational Courses, Conferences & Events
School Nurse?
E
ver wonder just what a school nurse does all day? Many mistakenly believe that being a school nurse is a “cushy job. In reality, being a school nurse involves not only meeting the needs of the students but also parents and teachers..
A school nurse must be prepared to deal with almost anything, from an outbreak of head lice to a stomachache, from coughs and colds to the occasional serious accident in the school gym. The following are just some of the responsibilities of a school nurse: 34
1. Direct nursing care: school nurses may care for students and teachers with acute or chronic conditions, such as asthma, food allergies, seizure disorders and other special needs. They must be aware of the medical histories and underlying health problems of students in order to anticipate potentially serious health situations. School nurses may treat injuries, monitor and administer medications and other duties within the scope of practice. 2. Leadership: emergency plans and the overall system of care for their particular schools often fall to the school nurse, who acts as a leader for staff and students in a wide variety of situations (i.e. fire, natural disasters). It is often the school nurse’s duty
to ensure that staff and students know what to do in such situations.
4. Health promotion: school nurses may be involved in a range of education and screening opportunities such as immunisation programs, dental hygiene programs, scoliosis screening, nutrition counseling, sex education, health fairs and educating individuals, classes and others regarding healthy practices. School nurses also liaise with family members and other healthcare professionals such as doctors, social workers and health program officials.

3. Ensuring the school environment is a healthy one: school nurses are responsible for promoting the physical and mental wellbeing of students and staff. This may involve counseling students about bullying, monitoring outbreaks of illness/disease, assessing air quality and playground equipment safety, and contributing to policies that keep students safe in the school environment.
The practice of school nursing is challenging as nurses may need to deliver a variety of other roles as required for the school community. It requires good interpersonal skills to be able to work with adults and children. Often school nurses may practice in isolation and therefore must be confident and comfortable working in this type of environment. It is a rewarding job and offers an opportunity to practice a wide range skills for a broad community. Although many people view the role of a school nurse as an easy one, the reality is that school nurses must be prepared for almost anything.

It’s life as usual in the Gulf - build Promesse is sometimes asked why our nurses stay in the Gulf, given the current political unrest in other Arab states like Libya. Based on a recent trip to the Gulf and feedback from our nurses, the truth is that it has not affected them – they are simply getting on with their lives and work. Besides, many feel a professional responsibility for their work and patients - it’s worthwhile to be part of the enormous effort to improve patient welfare and expand hospital services across the Gulf. But their life also has a lot going for it.
The cultural diversity, the freedom from everyday cost pressures, the excitement of travel and seeing the world and the satisfaction of career advancement are fairly heady reasons to stay put. What’s more, they live, travel and save in the local currency or equivalent so exchange rate issues are largely avoided. Working in the Gulf is beguiling and many of our nurses are reluctant to give up their dreams to return to the more mundane world of home. If you possess the same kind of spirit,
