92.9 Kids Appeal with Telethon A great success for PMH A cheque of over four hundred and eighty thousand dollars was handed over to Perth’s Princess Margaret Hospital on Friday 2 August by Lisa Paul and Baz. In the days that followed, more generous donations flowed in reaching a final tally of over five hundred thousand dollars – the largest amount raised in four years of 92.9’s Kids Appeal with Telethon. A number of guests, along with the children and staff flooded the main foyer at PMH. Last year’s Australia’s Got Talent winner Andrew Da Silva performed for the crowd, West Coast Eagle’s Josh Kennedy stopped in for a chat, while Channel Seven’s Mark Gibson and Angela Tsun participated in handing over the final cheque. 6
With Woolworths on board in 2013, we were able to reach out to everyday Aussies as they did their shopping at their local store, and were easily able to drop loose change at the register going straight to the Kids Appeal. In Perth, everyone knows the importance of giving back. The past two weeks proved a massive success for the whole team at 92.9, Telethon volunteers and the Woolworths crew – only made possible with the generosity of the people in Perth. All generous donations went toward purchasing vital equipment for the hospital, some of which include a II-Radiometer Transcutaneous Monitor, Trauma Trolleys, Cough Assist Machine, and a 24hr Glucose Monitor.

Australian Nursing & Midwifery Federation Delivering quality online training for nurses and midwives The Australian Nursing Federation is the largest health union in Australia because it is always guided by the needs of its members. In keeping with that practice, the ANF has a new name; we are now the Australian Nursing & Midwifery Federation (ANMF). The inclusion of Midwifery in our name comes after many years of changes for midwives culminating in Midwifery being recognised nationally as a separate profession to nursing and as midwives are valuable members of our organisation, we wanted to formally acknowledge our colleagues. In keeping with The ANMF’s commitment to membership needs, our Continuing Professional Education (CPE)
8
website delivers quality online training for nurses and midwives on many subjects. Due to the inclusion of so many new topics on the CPE website, we have changed the appearance of the available topics menu. It is now broken up into sub topics allowing you to easily locate topics related to your area of work. The sub topics include: Core nursing topics, critical care, general nursing, midwifery, mental health and aged care. We have also added 5 new topics in the past month, Arterial Blood Gases, two more Telehealth tutorials, Communicating with Psychotic Patients and Seizure Recognition in Nursing Practice. The Telehealth tutorials are free to all nurses and midwives across Australia regardless of ANMF member status.
Our critical care suite of topics now includes: • Advanced Life Support • Arterial Blood Gases • Cardiac 1 – Chest Pain Assessment and Management • Cardiac 2 – Acute Coronary Syndrome • ECG and Rhythms 1 • ECG and Rhythms 2 • Emergency Drugs • Respiratory 1 – Upper Airway Obstruction • Respiratory 2 – Respiratory Failure New to our general nursing suite is Thyroidectomy – an informative piece covering the various thyroid surgeries and nursing care of the patient following thyroidectomy. We will be adding many more new topics over the coming months including Quality Use of Medicines, Nutrition, Hydration, Malnutrition and Dehydration, Post Natal Depression, Nursery Home Visits, Paediatric Resuscitation, The Decision Making Framework and Understanding Schizophrenia. The ANMF also offers a one of a kind learning experience through the Simulation Education Online training room. Here we offer unique 3D simulated learning for clinical procedures and we currently have 32 modules available. Each module teaches a different procedure through an interactive simulation, accompanied by a step-by-step text with hyperlinks, a video demonstration, a 3D model of the anatomy encountered during the procedure and a quiz. This website is a fantastic professional development opportunity for all nurses and midwives and particularly relevant to those working in critical care, theatre and emergency areas. To access ANMF’s CPE opportunities, go to www.anf.org.au For further information contact Jodie Davis, Federal Education Officer ANMF at education@anf.org.au

Katie Musolino, Endoscopy Nurse Manager on placement in Nepal.
Projects Abroad A wonderful, challenging and rewarding experience Katie Musolino has been a registered nurse for over six years and has lived and worked in both Australia and London during this time. Currently she works as an Endoscopy Nurse Manager of a day surgery department for a large public hospital in Adelaide. She is 31 years old and has recently got married to a wonderful man. Katie tells of her rewarding experience volunteering in Nepal... So, if I just got married, what was I doing in Nepal you may ask? Trust me I asked myself that question many times and the best answer I have is: life moves quickly and it gets to a point that if you don’t do what you’ve always dreamed of doing now, then chances are, you never will and the moment will pass you by. So, I got on a plane, 10
my husband wished me luck (now you know why he is wonderful), and away I went! I have always been interested in visiting magical Nepal; with its alluring charm of mountains (ok, treks I actually had no intention of doing, but they are amazing), gentle natured people, meditation and yoga lessons, and good food. I love to travel, and joining Projects Abroad allowed me to combine my two loves, travel and nursing – perfect! I volunteered for two months with Projects Abroad and I asked them to split my placement in two – to spend a month in Chitwan and a month in Patan. I wanted to experience two different locations and two different types of medical institutions. Chitwan was up first.
After discussions with the Projects Abroad team I began fulltime work at a rural health post. The health post is situated about an hour and a half out of Chitwan, in a town called Gadauli. I would take the local bus daily and pass the scenic countryside – loving the journey as much as the destination. The health post is a District Health Department Supported Health Clinic. There are seven staff members all together. One Health Assistant – Supervisor/In-charge, four midwives (not trained nurses, midwives only) and two out of the four midwives live onsite. There is also one VHW – Village Health Worker and one Office Help worker. The health post runs a number of services on a weekly basis and is open 24 hours a day to emergency deliveries only. Outpatient services and family planning are run five days a week and every Tuesday is the antenatal clinic. The health post sees all patients - male and female the majority of whom live in the surrounding rural area. Infants, toddlers, teenagers, adults and the elderly are all seen and treated on a daily basis. The Health Department supplies the clinic with 35 free medications, as well as a basic supply of wound dressing materials, which they deliver regularly. The clinic has a moderate supply of medications for children and adults (antibiotics, creams, ointments, contraceptive pill, vaccinations, vitamins, etc.), which allows the clinic to be able to treat a varied range of illnesses and complaints.
“
I love to travel, and joining Projects Abroad allowed me to combine my two loves, travel and nursing – perfect!
“
I started my placement at the large teaching hospital – Chitwan Medical Centre. I spent my first two weeks here varying my time between Endoscopy and Emergency. I was fortunate enough to attend a couple of health camps in these first two weeks. Health camps are when a few nurses and doctors travel to a remote area in the community and set up a ‘mock’ clinic for the day/ week; administering free medications and free medical consultations ranging in specialties. Very quickly I learnt that this is what I wanted to do fulltime – I immediately loved it and realised the community work is what I went to Nepal to do.
administration of medication and counselling, tonsillitis, ring worm, infestation worms, asthma exacerbation and onset, chest infections, common cold, gastritis, vomiting, basic pain management and many wound treatments for cuts, burns and lacerations. The approach to care at the health post is mirrored to that of the World Health Organisation’s ‘Integrated Management of Childhood Illness’. My role was to perform all medical tasks within my scope of practice; actively treating and assisting in all levels of care. My nursing skills were utilised daily and I would carry out tasks such as: patient assessment, investigation, documentation, administration of medication, wound dressing, counselling and patient education. All of which was performed in collaboration with the other nurses – I was never alone. I learnt a lot from the other nurses; some of their skills just aren’t taught here in Australia due to the resources we have. The experience has definitely showed me my career from another perspective and made me a more resourceful nurse. The health post was a wonderful opportunity to be a part of an institution who delivers free medical treatment and medication to those who live remotely and would otherwise not get the care they require. The placement with Projects Abroad was a wonderful, challenging and rewarding experience for me to actively use my skills to help treat many members of the Nepali community. For further information about Projects Abroad, visit www.projects-abroad.com.au
The resources and conditions the patients would present were often a reflection of their surroundings. At the clinic I treated many illnesses such as: issues related to pregnancy – mother and child, family planning – 11

Ian Ruff, Fly-In, Fly-Out (FIFO) Senior Flight Nurse for the Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS) in Meekatharra
Royal Flying Doctor Service Critical care at the heart of RFDS
“
The RFDS’ motto - the furthest corner, the finest care - really resonated with me. Working with them enables me to give care to people who wouldn’t otherwise be able to access it.
“
For the past five-and-a-half years, Ian Ruff has been a Fly-In, Fly-Out (FIFO) Senior Flight Nurse for the Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS) in Meekatharra – and he couldn’t be happier. Mr Ruff is originally from Victoria and works every second month with the RFDS, providing critical care in-flight to patients, the next month he is back at Bendigo Hospital, working in the Intensive Care Unit, and it’s a mix that he really enjoys.
communities,” he said.
“When I first looked into working for the RFDS, I was looking for a change. I’d been working long hours in critical care and while I was still enjoying it, I thought that my experience might be valuable to people in remote
“The RFDS’ motto - the furthest corner, the finest care really resonated with me. Working with them enables me to give care to people who wouldn’t otherwise be able to access it.
12
Working for the RFDS has also allowed Mr Ruff to hone his skills, and keep them fresh, an experience he highly recommends to other nurses. “The RFDS has a high degree of expertise and professionalism and I’ve found that they have very high standards when it comes to patient care,” he said. “For me, working with them is good professionally and great personally. It gives me a lot of variety and I believe it helps me to keep my skills sharp. “I think my two roles complement one another. In one, I am working in critical care in the back of a plane and in the other I am back in the public health system working in an Intensive Care Unit (ICU). I bring skills I learn in the ICU at Bendigo Hospital back to the bush with me. “I think as nurses it’s often easy to feel like you are working too hard and lose the passion that you had for the job at the beginning of your career. Nurses with a few runs on the board who are looking to challenge themselves and extend themselves professionally should definitely look in to working for the RFDS.” To work for the RFDS, nurses need to be trained as midwives, a skill that Mr Ruff already had under his belt, but he said not having it shouldn’t put other nurses off applying for a role with the service. “Having midwifery skills is obviously a very important part of the job when you are working so remotely,” he said.
“
I would highly recommend it to any nurse thinking about it – it really does give you the chance to take a different path in your life. You really can make a difference to people’s lives.
“
“I think living in cities; we really take for granted how something simple like needing to see a specialist or going to a clinic can be difficult. Without the RFDS there would be no option for people living in the most remote corners of Western Australia.”
“The RFDS has always been an iconic organisation in this country,” he said. “It has a long standing history of very professional nursing – it’s something that I’m very proud to be a part of. “I think it makes you walk a little taller when you tell people that you work for the RFDS, it’s a great honour and a professional privilege. “I would highly recommend it to any nurse thinking about it – it really does give you the chance to take a different path in your life. You really can make a difference to people’s lives. “I’m inspired daily by the doctors, nurses and pilots that I have met in this role. They are a highly motivated group of people and it’s also been fantastic to be part of small remote community – I’ve met some good, honest country people living in Meekatharra. “Honestly, I feel very lucky to be a part of it.”
For further information about the Royal Flying Doctor Service, visit www.flyingdoctor.org.au
“But if you’re not already trained in that field, the RFDS actually offers scholarships to allow you to train as a midwife. It’s great because it opens more doors and it’s giving you another skill that is really invaluable as a nurse.” As well as the variety of the day-to-day job Mr Ruff said that he felt proud to work with an organisation that was so much at the heart of caring for Australians. 13
Indigenous Health
Remote Area Health Corps (RAHC) Providing a fantastic service to Aboriginal communities Dr Diana Richards, a GP from Sydney with over 30 years’ experience is the 2000th placement and was presented with a commemorative certificate by the Hon. Warren Snowdon, Member for Lingiari and Minister for Indigenous Health, at the Centre for Remote Health in Alice Springs on Tuesday, 6th August 2013. Following her cultural and clinical orientation training, Dr Richards will be heading to Tennant Creek for a three week placement. “RAHC are providing a fantastic service to Aboriginal communities ensuring that people outside the cities and towns have access to quality health care. It is a positive step towards closing the gap in health outcomes between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and the broader Australian population,” said the Minister.
The Remote Area Health Corps (RAHC) has now delivered over 2,000 health professional placements into remote Indigenous communities across the Northern Territory (NT) since beginning operations in 2008. This is the equivalent of 186 years of service.

Beginning with high quality cultural and clinical orientation programs before their placement and orientation and ongoing support from RAHC staff while they are on placement in the community. According to Philip Roberts, General Manager of RAHC: “The team is proud to celebrate this milestone of 2,000 placements. We are equally proud of our repeat rate of 80 per cent. This really shows that the RAHC model works and that health professionals are returning for placements and providing continuity of care.
