Breast Cancer Network Australia (BCNA)
Breast Cancer Network Australia (BCNA) Launch their FREE Breast Cancer & Excercise booklet The new resource provides women with information about how exercise may benefit them, as well as offering practical tips about keeping active from the experiences of other women. BCNA CEO Maxine Morand, herself a breast cancer survivor, said it was important that women are supported through clinical information and first-hand advice from other women. “Exercise is a really important part of staying well after a diagnosis of breast cancer. This booklet will provide reliable information about the recommended amount of physical activity, types of activities women can try and practical strategies from other women about how to keep active,” Maxine said. Figures released by Cancer Australia last year showed one in four women with breast cancer are unaware of the benefits of regular physical activity after a diagnosis of breast cancer.
BCNA has launched a new Breast Cancer and Exercise booklet to provide women with reliable and comprehensive information about exercising after a breast cancer diagnosis. The free information booklet, developed in consultation with breast cancer survivors, researchers and health professionals, was funded by the 2012 Bakers Delight Pink Bun Campaign. 6
Research suggests that lifestyle factors such as a moderate level of physical activity may reduce the risk of breast cancer recurrence by 24% and the risk of death by more than one third when compared with inactive breast cancer survivors. BCNA’s Breast Cancer and Exercise booklet outlines information on the benefits of exercise, the amount of exercise recommended to women diagnosed with breast cancer and an exercise diary. BCNA often hears from our members that while there is a

lot of information and advice about exercise available for women, much of it is conflicting and confusing. Maxine said many women can start exercising any time during or after treatment for breast cancer. “In general, the earlier you start the better but it is never too late. Low impact activity such as walking or bike riding is a great way to start,” Maxine said. Regular exercise during and following breast cancer treatment can help to improve physical and emotional wellbeing, including mood, sleep, and bone mineral density. Exercise can also help manage some of the physical side effects of breast cancer treatment, such as fatigue and pain. Research suggests that any amount of exercise is better than none, and more is generally better than less. It is recommended that women diagnosed with breast cancer try to undertake the same amount of exercise recommended for all Australian adults – at least 2 ½ hours of moderate intensity exercise per week (or 30 minutes five times a week). Breast Cancer and Exercise booklet is free and can be ordered from BCNA by calling 1800 500 258 or downloaded from www.bcna.org.au

Register4
Professor Sharon Kilbreath and Professor John Hopper have used Register4 to help fast track their research.
Register4 Helping researchers find the right people for their projects Helping researchers find suitable people for their projects is what the National Breast Cancer Foundation’s online community called Register4 aims to do. It’s delivering on its promise, and in some cases Register4 is recruiting for projects in less than a day. This new research tool can be of great value to health professionals who find it challenging to find suitable people to participate in their studies.
Through fast tracking research, Register4 can help clinicians lead to health advances for their patients in a range of areas including prevention of disease and improved treatment options.
It can sometimes take years for researchers to find the right people to participate in their work—Register4 is a way to help fast track this process and make research happen faster. It brings people and researchers together for the joint purpose of finding answers sooner.
How does Register4 work?
8
Register4 also provides participants with a tangible opportunity to get involved in health research and be part of the answer to many health issues.
Any health professional wanting to access Register4 members needs to become a researcher member at register4.org.au. Once a member they can submit their
project for consideration which is assessed for quality by an Access Committee. Approved study information is emailed to all Register4 members. People who meet the study criteria and wish to participate give their approval to be involved and their details are forwarded to the researcher. After the study is implemented, results are published on the Register4 website for the benefit of all.
Empowering people – taking an active role in research While researchers are giving the thumbs up to Register4, the members are also feeling positive about their ability to take an active role in research. One member stated, “Thank you for such a great service connecting survivors of this disease to the latest research opportunities. Makes me feel more empowered against such a big challenge!”
Type of research projects The types of projects and level of participation with Register4 projects can vary. It could be as simple as filling in a questionnaire to something more involved such as providing a blood sample. It’s up to the participant what research projects they would like to participate in. Since the launch of the initiative in October 2010, over 30 000 people have joined Register4. Research projects offered to members to date have focused on breast cancer, but may expand to other health conditions in the future.
Register4 in action Professor Sharon Kilbreath from the University of Sydney used Register4 to help find people for her project called, Physical well-being for women with metastatic (advanced) breast cancer. “We were delighted to use Register4 to fast track recruitment for the project. It would have taken us about a year to find the people Register4 found in a day. We hope results of the study will assist in the development of guidelines regarding physical activity and exercise for all women living with breast cancer, including those with metastatic disease”, said Professor Kilbreath. Professor John Hopper from the University of Melbourne used Register4 to help fast track research for the Australian Breast Cancer Family Study. “We were able to recruit 600 participants in less than two weeks. Before the inception of Register4, identifying this number of participants would have taken several years. In addition to the speedy recruitment, Register4 makes it easier to identify particular types of family histories and rapidly engage families using the internet”, Professor Hopper said.
Another member told Register4, “My good friend died of breast cancer when she was only 33 years old. If there is something about me that helps find more answers to breast cancer, then I’m all for taking part in the research”.

Join at register4.org.au – either as a researcher member if you’d like to access members of Register4 for your research, or join as a community member where you can take part in the research. Encourage your patients, family, friends, colleagues and neighbours to join Register4. Register4 is for ANYONE, 18 years and over. After you join, check the current projects to see what may be right for you. There’s already a project waiting for every member - the Baseline Health and Lifestyle Questionnaire, which provides important descriptive data for researchers. If you would like any posters or brochures to use in your workplace to help spread the word about Register4, contact info@register4.org.au

Associate Professor Yves d’Udekem is the lead researcher into why a percentage of patients who had coarctation repair as children are developing hypertension and what would be the best drug to treat them.
Murdoch Children’s Research Institute Thousands of heart patients may be at risk Thousands of heart patients around the world who underwent surgery prior to the early 1990s could be living with undetected high blood pressure, putting themselves at risk of early death, a study by Murdoch Childrens Research Institute has found. The heart operation to repair coarctation (narrowing) of the aorta in newborn babies was designed in 1944. Until the 1990s it was considered best practice in the field of congenital heart disease and was performed globally. Murdoch Childrens researchers have found that between 50 and 60 per cent of patients who had coarctation repair as children may have hypertension as young adults. Even more concerning is the finding that after the age of 25, 10
a large proportion of patients – 80 per cent - no longer see any doctors and that their hypertension would therefore be undetected. In the study, researchers performed 24-hour blood pressure monitoring on 97 patients, who had been operated on at The Royal Children’s Hospital, Melbourne (RCH). Patients wore a monitoring cuff, which was connected to a small wearable machine and placed around their arm which inflates and measures the blood pressure once every half hour during the day and once every hour at night. Associate Professor Yves d’Udekem from Murdoch Childrens, the University of Melbourne and Deputy
Director of Cardiac Surgery at the RCH, has urged heart patients who underwent surgery to repair a coarctation of the aorta prior to the early 1990s to ensure they have regular checkups with their GP or cardiologist. “This is an important health issue that needs to be urgently addressed. Hypertension at this early age is a grave concern, because in the matter of one or two decades it can accelerate blockage of blood vessels, leading to death by 30-40 years of age,” Yves said. “A total of 837 patients have had an operation for coarctation of the aorta at The Royal Children’s Hospital since 1984. It is likely that more than 1,600 patients with a previous coarctation of the aorta repair are currently living in Australia, and many more thousands around the world, of whom potentially half are at risk of undetected hypertension.” Associate Professor d’Udekem said due to better understanding and knowledge the operation at the RCH had improved since the early 1990s. “The Royal Children’s Hospital is leading the world in this surgery and we are now performing more advanced procedures leading to less hypertension,” he said. Associate Professor d’Udekem has now received funding from Heart Kids, to lead a follow up study, where he hopes to recruit patients in Victoria, aged at least 16 years old, using the cuff-monitoring technique. The results from this study will help determine why these patients develop hypertension and what would be the best drug to treat them. Researchers from Murdoch Childrens Research Institute have already found that what was originally considered an acceptable size of the aorta after repair is in fact too small, and that a proportion of babies born with coarctation of the aorta need to have a more extensive operation at birth to help avoid hypertension at a later age.
Patients interested in the current study can contact the Murdoch Children’s team on (03) 9936 6512.

The University of Western Australia Pregnant women pedal towards diabetes solution investigating whether regular cycling exercise during pregnancy can prevent the condition. However, researchers need more volunteers in order to probe whether the cycling program can deliver the profound benefits they are hoping for. The project is led by Winthrop Professor John Newnham, head of UWA’s School of Women’s and Infants’ Health, and is funded by the National Health and Medical Research Council, Telethon and the Women and Infants Research Foundation. Gestational diabetes affects 1 in 12 pregnancies and has serious health consequences for both mother and child, including complications with delivery and increased risk of developing obesity and diabetes later in life. Associate Professor Kym Guelfi, of UWA’s School of Sports Science, Exercise and Health, said that if shown to be effective, the cycling program could have significant benefits for the women and their children. UWA School of Sports Science, Exercise and Health trainer Louise Smargiassi with research participant Sonja Moors (on bike) and son Ned Moors.
“In terms of the scientific findings it’s too early to say anything, hence the call for more volunteers, but what I can say is women that have been involved in the exercise program have warmly embraced it,” Associate Professor Guelfi said.
Researchers from The University of Western Australia are looking for another 100 or more pregnant women to join a study investigating whether exercise can help prevent gestational diabetes.
One volunteer said that having taken part in the program, she was so much fitter than she had been in a long time: “I feel fantastic. It has made this pregnancy more enjoyable and I am much happier and less stressed.”
So far 83 pregnant volunteers have jumped on their bikes for The Cycle Study, a randomised controlled trial

Education & Research
Dr Mary Casey of the Casey Centre There’s more to education than you think further careers and to choose specialist areas. I am celebrating the Casey Centre’s 20th anniversary this year, a decade of which has been dedicated to nursing education. Looking back, I can’t believe how far healthcare education has come. Barriers such as age, poor time, and unemployment no longer exist in educational development – the sky is the limit. Courses can be completed without even having to leave the home and the government provides special funding for the unemployed. In many cases today, a good income can be achieved within three to six months from commencement of a course due to hands on experience while learning.
Dr Mary Casey of the Casey Centre
Education is more than a qualification written on a piece of paper. It’s a door opener and a gateway to new beginnings and should never be underestimated. Learning is more accessible today than it ever has been and people are taking full advantage. New courses and certificates are at our fingertips enabling workers to 16
These are not the only factors that have changed. People, now more than ever, are entering education with the goal of taking their career to the next level. Whether they choose to move onto a completely different role or specialise in a particular area, people are realising the true value of education and what it can mean for them on a personal level. Knowledge is one of the most useful tools a nurse can possess. Medical advancements and new infectious illnesses are constantly being discovered, as well as updated techniques for treatment, and new medications. Staying on top of your game not only makes processes easier for you to manage but also ensures that your patient receives the most up to date treatment. When seeking a change of role within the healthcare sector, having a variety of certificates and qualifications
There is also the sustainability factor. In today’s economic climate, when job cuts are being made, education is a key element that employers assess when it comes to who will stay and who will go. On a personal level, I have also experienced that a certain type of respect goes hand in hand with education as certification confirms a nurse’s competence and capabilities to peers, patients, supervisors, and administrators. Above all, personal development allows students to learn self-discipline, responsibility, awareness, companionship and good health both mentally and physically. In my experience, I have seen people of all ages, cultures and sexes transform from feeling fearful and lacking confidence to blossoming into professionals and able to take on new careers or better jobs. Unfortunately I think the problem with people not pursuing education is their lack of confidence in themselves and their abilities. This can stem from not being good at school when they were younger or they may have been told (like I was) that they would never amount to anything. If the latter is the case, think about the people who told you and how successful they are today. Chances are they are unhappy, insecure people because to say something so cruel to a person, especially a young person, means that they are certainly not someone you would aspire to be like.
“
When seeking a change of role within the healthcare sector, having a variety of certificates and qualifications under your belt will allow you to choose a speciality that is of most interest to you. Employers value the commitment that has been taken to study and further education is an attribute that gets nurses over the line and into a new role.

They may be good at their profession but poor at connecting with people. Today that isn’t good enough; there is too much competition to half do a job. We need personnel skilled in all facets of their profession. They must thoroughly understand the industry they are working in as well as the needs of those they are dealing with and be proficient in their knowledge and skills and also on a personal level. Personal development is just as essential an ingredient as education is the rest.

So if you feel as though you missed the boat with an education...think again! It’s never too late!! At Casey College, we not just educate our students but we build their confidence and support and encourage them to reach their potential. Our belief is that professionals need so many other skills other than just theory. There is no point in taking on this role if you do not possess confidences and effective communication skills with the patient and their family members. You need an enormous range of skills. This is her journey…
Keona applied to study speech pathology through the Cadigal Alternative Entry Program, an admission and support scheme for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who wish to study at the University of Sydney. “For me, the key to successfully completing my speech pathology degree was really the support structures that surrounded me,” said Keona.
Keona moved around a lot as a child and didn’t experience success in school. She said, “I wanted to share my story because I want Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander kids to know that you don’t have to be super smart or the best student. You just have to know where you want to go and 18
“After I finished school, I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do,” said Keona. “I enrolled in Nursing at Wollongong University but soon realised that it wasn’t for me. However, it gave me a taste for working in health, so I looked at other options available to me.”
“I can’t speak highly enough of Yooroang Garang, the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Student Support Unit within the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Sydney.”
discussions regarding speech pathology course curriculum and cultural training of current workforce. “Being an IAHA Board Member is hard work but very rewarding,” said Keona.
It wasn’t all smooth sailing though; Keona struggled during the first semester of her studies. “It was a huge change for me and the academic environment was so different to anything I’d experienced,” said Keona.
“We leave our individual professions at the door and focus on achieving our vision - For Indigenous Australians to have access to professionally and culturally competent allied health services delivered by Indigenous allied health professionals who are recognised and acknowledged as an essential part of a holistic approach to Indigenous Health.”
“It was hard to meet my most basic needs – finding somewhere to live and supporting myself in a new city. I was working in hospitality four nights a week to get by and my studies had to come second to this. I ended up failing all my subjects so I quit.” “If it wasn’t for the support from the team at Yooroang Garang it could have ended there. But they helped me see that I could do it and I re-enrolled and tried again. They offered so much support and guidance, both academically and socially, and got me through the challenging first two years of my degree.” A turning point for Keona occurred in the third year of her studies when she got a Rotary scholarship and started an Indigenous cadetship at Mt Druitt Community Health Centre.
“IAHA is a significant support network for me professionally and I find my role as a Director is really important to encourage young people to consider something different within allied health and IAHA can assist with this,” said Keona. “So if you are an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander person and want to know more about becoming an allied health professional, you can visit: www.indigenousalliedhealth.com.au “You could also come to the second IAHA national conference being held in Adelaide on 26-27 November 2013.”
“The financial support that I received meant that I could fully focus on my studies instead of on survival. I went from barely a pass average to a distinction average and with the cadetship I knew I would have a job at the end of my studies.” said Keona. “And through it all Yooroang Garang was there for me.” Keona finally finished her studies in 2005 and began her career as a speech pathologist. She worked in various positions throughout her career, before finally ending up in her current role as the Paediatric Unit Head for Speech Pathology in the Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Health District, NSW. At a local level, Keona is on the Respecting the Difference cultural education working group and is supporting staff working on a project with the local Aboriginal pre-school. Keona is also entering her second year as a Board Director at IAHA, over the past year engaging Speech Pathology Australia, University academics and heads schools in 19

How can technology encourage learning to ensure authentic learning? How can digital learning mitigate risks associated with lack of core competencies? The Technology Enhanced Learning in Health conference addresses the challenges and opportunities for how health education can benefit with the integration of technology.

Healthy recipes... Smoked Chicken, Apple & Capsicum San Choy Bao What you will need: • • • • • • •
1 iceberg lettuce 1 tsp cooking oil 300g smoked chicken breast, diced 1 red capsicum deseeded & diced 2 – 3 green apples, diced A pinch of salt Chives, chopped *optional
Drizzle Sauce: • • • •
1/8 cup soy sauce 1 tbsp maple syrup 1/2 tbsp sesame oil 1/2 tbsp sesame seeds
Method: 1. 2. 3. 4. 34
Prepare your lettuce by removing the damaged outer leaves. Use a small sharp knife (a steak knife is ideal), slit around the core and start peeling the lettuce leaves, gently. For the bigger leaves, slit them into smaller pieces. Set aside the lettuce in the fridge while preparing the filling. Heat a teaspoon of oil in the pan and sauté the smoked chicken over medium flame until heated through. Then add diced capsicum and sauté until slightly soften. Remove the pan from the heat and add diced apples and a pinch of salt. Stir to combine and set aside. To prepare the sauce, simply combine all the sauce ingredients in a small bowl and stir until well mixed. To serve: spoon the filling into a lettuce leaf, top with chopped chives and a light drizzle of the soy- maple sauce. Enjoy!
Yellow Squash, Zucchini & Chickpeas Stir Fry What you will need: • • • • • • • • • • • •
Olive oil 3 cloves of garlic, peeled and finely chopped Dried chilli flakes (optional) 1 tsp of mixed Italian herbs 2 tbsps tomato paste 2 yellow squash, sliced 1 x 400g can of chickpeas, drained and rinsed Water (you may need to add some depending how the mixture turns out) 1 small zucchini, sliced Salt to taste Black pepper Brown rice
* Serves 2
Method: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.
Start by heating some olive oil in a medium pan. When the oil is hot, add garlic, chilli flakes (if using) and dried Italian herbs and saute until aromatic. Then add tomato paste and saute over low heat until the olive oil turns red and separates from the mixture (you may add more olive oil if the mixture looks a little dry). Add sliced yellow squash, toss to combine with the tomato paste mixture and sauté for a minute or so. Add chickpeas and toss to combine. If the mixture seems a bit dry, add 2 tbsps of water and close the pan with a lid. Cook until the squash slices are half-way tender. Then add sliced zucchini, toss to mix, and again close the pan with the lid to cook until the vegetables are tender to your liking. You may add some more water during the cooking time. Once the vegetables are tender, season with salt and pepper. Drizzle with some olive oil before serving. Serve immediately with some brown rice.
