Stanford NUS Executive Program in International Management

ASIA'S GLOBAL BUSINESS SCHOOL


Curriculum The program consists of about 50 lectures and class discussions, interspersed with group-study sessions in which participants and their teammates will analyze and discuss case studies and other materials in preparation for classes. Course materials range from case studies in marketing and business strategy, to the latest research by faculty from the two distinguished business schools.

Real-World Strategies for Global Business 2010 marks the 28th year of the Stanford-NUS Executive Program in International Management conducted in Singapore. This program presents a unique opportunity to immerse in the vibrant cultures of two of the world's most respected institutions; one renowned for its iconoclastic approach to critical thinking and challenging assumptions, and another for its uncompromisingly high standards and academic rigor.

Held annually in Singapore for 28 years now, close to 2,000 executives have participated and sharpened their perspectives through this intensive program that has been for many, a foundation for assuming greater leadership roles. These two weeks of highly intensive sessions are designed to augment participants' expertise with current insights and a greater depth of knowledge. Its aim is to hone analytical and behavioral skills essential for attaining a competitive edge in global and Asian business, and because of its international cohort, it also facilitates an invaluable worldwide network of peers across various industries.

Dr Glenn R. Carroll

Dr Carroll's research interests include organizational theory, strategic management, and industrial revolution. He has pioneered ecological approaches to organizational analysis, as well as their application to strategy. Dr Prem Shamdasani

Dr Seungjin Whang

Professor Whang's research specializations are in information management, performance measurement and incentives, logistics, economics and supply chain management. He has also studied how demand for information may be distorted in a supply chain, what impacts a secondary market has on a supply chain, pricing issues and fixed-up-to tariffs structures.

Dr Francis J. Flynn

Dr Flynn's research investigates issues of employee cooperation, diversity in work groups, and leadership in organizations. His recent work considers how employees can develop healthy patterns of cooperation and whether the influence of gender stereotypes on workplace dynamics can be mitigated. His scholarly articles have appeared in more than a dozen publications that span the fields of management and social psychology. Dr Flynn currently sits on the boards of the Administrative Science Quarterly and the Academy of Management Journal and is a member of the Academy of Management and the American Psychological Association.

Dr Jesper B. Sorensen

Dr Sorensen is a sociologist specializing in the study of dynamics of both organizations and careers, with work that covers a wide range of topics ranging from firm performance to social inequality. Dr Sorensen won (with Toby E. Stuart) the 2006 Administrative Science Quarterly Award for Scholarly Contribution for the article "Aging, Obsolescence and the Organizational Innovation (ASQ, 2000)." He also won the 2006 Teacher of the Year Award from the MIT Sloan School of Management. He has served as both Associate and Consulting Editor for the American Journal of Sociology, is on the Editorial Board of Administrative Science Quarterly, and is a Senior Editor of Organization Science.

His research interests include strategies for local and multinational companies, restructuring and new growth, emerging markets, venture capital financing, strategic alliances, start-ups and foreign investment. His book ‘Sony vs Samsung: The Inside Story of the Electronics Giants’ Battle for Global Supremacy’, was voted among the top three best business books in 2008, according to ‘strategy+business’, a Boston Consulting Group publication.

Dr Kai-Alexander Schlevogt

Dr Schlevogt specializes in global leadership and growth strategies in emerging markets, especially in Asia. A leading expert in international strategic studies and economics, emerging marketing, and Chinese businesses and entrepreneurship, he has written three books and over one hundred journal articles that have been published in leading publications. Previously a strategic management consultant for McKinsey & Co. in Asia, Dr Schlevogt frequently runs customized executive education programs for top leaders and government organizations. His current research interests are in the development of operations and supply chain capabilities, Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP), operations strategy, and global operations management. • Associate Professor, NUS Business School • PhD, University of Texas at Austin Dr Chia teaches courses in management, organizational issues and leadership at various levels. • Associate Professor, NUS Business School • PhD, University of Michigan Dr Pangarkar teaches strategy and international business courses in the BBA, MBA and Executive MBA programs at the National University of Singapore. He has been a faculty member in several executive education programs at NUS including the General Management Program, Strategic Management Program and the Commonwealth Top Managers Program. Recognized by both students and fellow faculty, Dr Pangarkar has been the recipient of several awards for teaching and service excellence. Program Directors Dr Chia Ho Beng

• Senior Lecturer, NUS Business School • PhD, University of British Columbia Dr Chia teaches leadership, coaching for change, creative problem solving, human resource management, negotiation, mediation, and conflict resolution at all levels. He was awarded the Outstanding Educator Award in 2001 and 2002 and made the list of the top six percent of educators at NUS in 2003. Dr Chia is also an adjunct feedback coach with the Center for Creative Leadership, and serves on various mediation and dispute resolution committees in Singapore. He is part of a research group at the Singapore Mediation Centre, and served on the management committee of the Centre for Corporate Social Responsibility. In 2006, Dr Chia was awarded the Outstanding Community Service Award by the NUS Business School. Prior to his academic career, he worked in both the financial and manufacturing sectors. His work experience includes managing corporate accounts, turnaround management, managing in merger transitions, and problem loans management. • Associate Professor, NUS Business School • PhD (Finance), University of Washington • Certified Public Accountant Dr Tan teaches business finance, personal finance, corporate finance, and financial markets. She received the Faculty Outstanding Educator Award in 2003, and Recognition for Excellence as Outstanding Educator in 2004. She was also listed as an excellent teacher in the "NUS Undergraduate Student Feedback 2002/2003". She is currently serving on the Board of Management of the NUS Academic Staff Provident Fund. In 2002, she held the post of Vice Dean of Finance and Administration in the School. She also does consulting and conducts inhouse training programs for various multinational organizations. Her research interests include privatization and policy risk, mergers, acquisitions and seasoned equity offerings. Dr Tan's research articles have been published in numerous international academic and professional journals. She frequently serves as a reviewer for international journals and was the Associate Editor of the Asian Case Research Journal from 1997 to 2003.
