Urban Motiff - Sequence of spaces

Al Bustan Palace Sidab

Oman has an endless coast of 2,092 km (Index Mundi, 2012) (Mundi). The coast hosts different marine lives, some unique to this region, attracting various researchers across the globe. The Reefs of Qantab are no different. Life in these reefs remains a mystery to us.

Privatization

With urbanization trends, the serene beaches of Muscat have been transformed into nests of luxury hotels (the Crowne Plaza, Shangrilla Resort and Spa etc.), private apartments, marina etc. These new developments pose a threat to the existing marine life. In addition, they have taken over the public spaces by the coast line. The topic of my research quarter is conservation of marine ecology. Marine ecology is a vast field. In my concept I have focused on the reef ecology. My aim in this project is to find a balance between creating a space for marine researchers close to the reef whist leaving the natural beach untouched.

Boenten Areal, Germany

Revitalization of Boenten Areal, Aachen, Germany 02 Semester VII Group Work Church

Boenten Areal is located close to the railway tracks in Aachen. Apart from the loud noise, the cargo transported shakes the ground which makes the area very uncomfortable and unattractive for living. Currently, the site functions as store for building materials.

Combining these factors, we proposed an ‘inner city garden block’ concept. The complete area would be enclosed by apartments. Noise from railway tracks would be blocked by a Strength five storey structure housing offices and workshops for the residents and non residents Strength (Spaces) and green Weakness houses on the roof. Inside the block, there are luxury cottage houses, with private gardens. Apartment user could rent a garden. Leisure

In a single cluster there are five dormitories along with an administrative room, cafeteria and study rooms. The courtyards within serve as the community space (semi-private) where the students can relax in the evenings.

The student dormitory is a cluster of many clustered units.

The different clusters are connected with walkways and open spaces. The students walk to their classes. The pathway is shaded with large trees of various species, making it possible for the students to use this pathway at anytime of the day and year.

The proposed student dormitories at the new proposed campus of GUTech are courtyard blocks. As they are very similar in their form, the architects wanted to create distinction between the different blocks with different landscaping for each courtyard. N

Internship 2012 05 NORPLAN Group Work Action Plan

Norplan is responsible for creating a redevelopment masterplan for Muttrah. In this internship, we concentrated on the squares and alley ways outllined in the action plan. Our aim was to improve the condition of the existing spaces making it more comfortable and enjoyable for its users.

Possible Street Paving

Street paving across the main souq

The leading walkway in the souq would be highlighted with a pattern in the pavement. Currently, pedestrians use the walkway as a guiding element to move around the souq, while some might stop to browse through the goods in the shops. To further emphasize this, we used two types of paving - plain paving stones and patterned paving stones. The pattern could be created using interlock stones of various colors.

In this square, Line would be the element of order, guiding the visitors through the various activites taking place in this area, thereby uniting the fragmented space once more as a single unit.

Muttrah is one of the most reputed tourist spot in Oman. A physical connection between the corniche and the square would guide the tourists into the heart of the souq. This would be done using the shading structures. Each square has been assigned a different shading structure, which would visually guide the tourists to these areas.
