LEATHER AND CRAFT

SABAI GRASS

Sabai grass is one of the natural fibers plenty available in the forests of Mayurbhanja district in Orissa. The tribal people called it as “Bobei Dauda or Bobei Ghasa” locally. The scien fic name of sabai grass is ‘Eulaliopsis Binata’, which consists of long leaf fibers. The fiber length of sabai grass is more than that of bamboo but fiber diameter is 2.5 lower than bamboo .Sabai Grass consists of high cellulose and pentose with low lignin content (non woody plants).Sabai grass is mainly used in the paper industry .The ar s c hands of rural people have given a new recogni on in handicra . Sabai grass is collected from the forest mainly by the rural women who are then dried and made into ropes by manually operated machines .The dyes used for colouring the rope are synthe c dyes. These are then used for making u lity item

23

PROTOTYPE

The sabai grass will coat on the bomboo stand to make ower stand

And sabai pot is used as a design element at centre of the bomboo

Initial construction and developments

RAW MATERIALS: The raw materials needed to make the product are: 1 Sabai grass 2 Sabai rope 3 Dead Palm Leaf

24

MAIN SOURCE OF RAW MATERIAL: Raw materials are easily available from Mayurbhanj (approx 40 kms from Balipada). During rainy season it becomes diďŹƒcult to acquire these raw materials, because moisture fades the colour of the rope. They get chemical dyes from Kolka a.

PROCESSING: Here process is mainly discussed in terms of a par cular product, the Basket. 1 Talli: Bundle of sabai grass is held and ed together with another coloured dead palm leaf with the needle. They start s tching from the base and proceeds further on the top s tching it in the same manner. The applica on of s tches resembles chain s tch, one kind of Indian embroidered s tch. 2 A er this they do the edging i.e. when they close the s tches on the brim of the basket. 3 Then they make the handle of the basket and s tch it on to the basket to complete the final product.

TOOLS: The different kinds of tools used are: 1 Iron Frames, they order them from the welding shops. The price differs with the difference in size. 2 Bamboo frames are also used. 3 “Sui - Dhaga” (needle and thread)

PATTACHITRA

Pa achitra style of pain ng is one of the oldest and most popular art forms of Odisha. The name Pa achitra has evolved from the Sanskrit words pa a, meaning canvas, and chitra, meaning picture. Pa achitra is thus a pain ng done on canvas, and is manifested by rich colourful applica on, crea ve mo fs and designs, and portrayal of simple themes, mostly mythological in depic on. Some of the popular themes represented through this art form are Thia Badhia - depic on of the temple of Jagannath; Krishna Lila - enactment of Jagannath as Lord Krishna displaying his powers as a child; Dasabatara Pa - the ten incarna ons of Lord Vishnu; Panchamukhi - depic on of Lord Ganesh as a five-headed deity. More than anything, the themes are clearly the essence of the art form, conceptualising the meaning of the pain ngs. It is no surprise therefore that the process of preparing the pain ngs engages undeterred concentra on and careful cra smanship, stretching the prepara on me of the pa a alone to around five days.

The patachitras usually conform to a dis nct set pa ern. The pain ngs reflect some kind of abstract symbolism following a formalized structure and simplicity in composi on. The number of figures is usually restricted to one or two per pain ng. In this art form there is very li le scope for innova on. The style of art is essen ally handed down over genera ons and consists of set pa erns, lines, colours and the poses and postures of the trends le by the forefathers. Despite some limita ons, the style shows unique formal simplifica on and superb colour orchestra on.

27

The use of pats was not only limited to storytelling – this form of art was a part and parcel of the people’s daily life in Ezypt . For the patachitra ,I have taked a inspira on from ezypi an art and make the stokes on fish pot and with medium acrylic color on it

Initial construction and developments

The ezyp an art is used as a pa achitra The glass pot is used to make table lamp and flower pot Acrylic color are used to make artwork

This increasing need for wood has been beau fully supplemented by bamboo. These eco-friendly products are light in weight and have their own style and elegance. These products have a high life with minimum maintenance and are at par with wood, if not be er. Strips of bamboo and various types of canes are extensively used to manufacture different u lity and decora ve items. Mats, lamp shades, trays, baskets are weaved and kni ed . Bamboo can also be converted into strong and unique furniture, which are very popular now. Jewelry, bags and handbags are the other popular items of this cra . Here is a example of 3 different material work (glass patchitra and bomboo)

Initial construction and developments

Material : bomboo stand for fish pot weaving is used with bomboo and leather saloo to creat a look over fish pot electric circuit for bulb .
