Nutrition for Better Immunity In Children Dr. Verma says, The role of preventive nutrition has magnanimously emerged for safeguarding health, especially during the unprecedented times of SARS CoV2 when other public health strategies are not optimally rewarding. A number of scientific publications recognize that optimal nutrition supports immune system. But unfortunately, one cannot build immunity overnight. A consistent diet with immunity boosting foods, good sleep and exercise will strengthen the body in the long run to fight diseases. Immune System- To put it simply, immune system with three layers of protection like barrier system, immune cells and antibodies each responding to different threats is the bodies defense strategy with innate and adaptive immunities that, throughout our lifetime, protects us from different invading pathogens and keeps us healthy and able to resist many repeated infections. Children are more vulnerable than adults to infections; during the first months of life, maternal antibodies protect the child from microorganisms that the mother has encountered previously. While getting an actual infection may make a child immune to subsequent infections by the same germ, though this is not always the case and the infections may result in complications that cause permanent damage. A strong immune system would thereby prevent infections, allergies, aid optimal growth and health. What helps strengthen the immune systemGenerally, four factors like genetics, environment, lifestyle, nutrition impact the immune functions and although we have limited control over genetics and environment, we do have a good ability to influence nutritional status. In infants, children and teens, diet can plays major role- a poor diet or reduced
availability of balanced meals will lead to nutritional deficits that may impact optimal immune function and on the other hand a diet of abundance that is mainly composed of highly refined, packaged, processed, refined foods may lead to oxidative stress and inflammation which can further burden the immune system. Foods and nutrients help to boost the immune system- Microbial organisms find suitable conditions for their development if the diet lacks substances that stimulate a strong immune system, such as vitamins, minerals and essential fatty acids hence balanced diet is a very important element which protects children against illnesses naturally and provides them with growth needs and good health. When thinking about immune boosting foods, the commonly found foods in one’s kitchen provide an array of necessary macro and micronutrients with fresh fruits and vegetables as great sources of vitamins and antioxidants like vitamins A, vitamin E, B6, B9, B12, C and D; iron, selenium, zinc. Also, functional foods like omega 3 fatty acids, spices like turmeric, garlic, ginger, tulsi, pepper, tea, nuts. And daily dose of probiotics like curds, buttermilk, fermented foods for healthy digestive system. WWW.NUTRITIONINSIGHTS.IN | 12
