A Veterans Day Service will be held jointly by the VFW Post 2447 and The American Legion at Massanutten Military Academy at 11:00 am. A light meal will be served at the American Legion following the ceremony.

A meal will be provided at the VFW for all Veterans free of charge.

VFW Post 2447 and our Auxiliary salutes all veterans and their families on Veterans Day. The endurance of American liberty owes it success to the fact that during every generation, from the Revolutionary period to this very hour, brave Americans have stepped forward and served honorably in the Armed Forces of the United States. Every one of you deserves the thanks and the admiration of our entire country.

Military service demands a special kind of sacrifice. The places where you live and serve, the risk you face, the people you deal with every day are all decided by someone else. The interests of the nation must always come first. And those duties are shared by family members who make many sacrifices of their own, face separation during deployments and sometimes bear extreme and permanent loss.

No single military power in history has done greater good, shown greater courage, liberated more people, or upheld higher standards of decency and valor than the Armed Forces of the United States of America.

That is a legacy to be proud of, and those who contributed to it must never be taken for granted. To honor our veterans, we must keep the promises we have made to them. We must care for those who have been injured in the service of our country. We must honor and remember those who have died. And we must remember those whose fate is still undetermined. We fly the POW flag on Veterans Day for a reason: This nation will not relent until we have accounted for every one of our missing Americans.

For eligible veterans one of the best ways to keep the legacy alive is to join the Veterans of Foreign Wars. We are the largest combat veterans’ organization in the United States. We’re an elite group of combat warriors who have each other’s backs long after the fight is over. Within the VFW you will find camaraderie, empowerment, and assistance securing the benefits you’ve earned.

Since 1899, the VFW has been the nation’s leading veterans service organization in the fight to better the lives of all those who’ve worn the uniform of the United States military. No matter which conflict called you to service, we invite you to join us. Stand strong with the nearly 1.7 million members of the VFW and its Auxiliary as together, we continue to fight for all that’s good FOR VETERANS. The VFW Auxiliary exists to help honor, serve and assist our many Veterans of this country who have given so much to assure our freedom. We would like to invite you to become a member of our organization. The qualifications are that you are an active, inactive or retired military member, who has not served in a foreign war, or you have a family member who did serve in a foreign war.

The VFW is one of the most respected voices in Washington D.C. and within local governments across America. We advocate for justice for our nation’s veterans, service members and military families on an array of issues and continue to be the voice for veterans everywhere. We regularly testify before Congress, meet with elected officials and rally our national network of more than 80,000 patriotic supporters to ensure our lawmakers put veterans first. When those who’ve served their country and those that support them stand together, we cannot be ignored.

Locally the VFW and the Auxiliary annually give thousands of dollars to other volunteer organizations, food banks, the Empty Stocking Fund just to name a few. We provide transportation to veterans for appointments at the VA Medical Center, assist veterans and widows with VA claims. We also provided tremendous financial aid to homeless and other needy veterans and their families. Help us help other.

Come meet Mr. & Mrs. Santa Clause We are asking this year that you bring a canned item or non-perishable item. Refreshments will be served.

• December 31 New Years Eve Party Music By N-Touch. Starting at 7:00 p.m.

• The VFW has Friday night specials, lunch specials Mon. thru Friday 11:00 am to 2:00 p.m. The menu is posted in the Northern Virginia Daily every Monday so check it out.

• The VFW and the Auxiliary meet at the same time the Second Monday of each month at 7:00pm. A light snack is served after the meeting.

• Dues for the Auxiliary are $25.00 unless you would like to become a life member. Come by and check us out we’re always looking for new members. We are here to help support our Veterans in any way.

Eternal Gratitude I pay respect to my veteran brothers At the War Memorials when in DC I hear them recall their memories of war I become a child upon my hero's knee At days end those veterans go away My mission, honorably done I thanked each for their brave service And shook the hand of every one Cold War submariners are mostly unheralded No scars, no combat stories to recall The mission ended, we come home healthy But some brothers never came home at all In '63 and '68 Thresher and Scorpion were lost Eternal rest for each deserving soul We NEVER say our brothers are lost We say they are on eternal patrol The date of their loss quietly passes each year In the news there is never a peep We know our brothers are still on watch Brave warriors, patrolling the deep Over 4,000 submariners have died since Pearl Harbor 56 submarines on the sea floor rest All spirits combined into just one crew Comprised of the bravest and the best You maintained the freedom we enjoy We are eternally grateful to you We you inspired, still fight beneath the sea We are submariners, that's what we do Richard A.
