Three Woodstock siblings looking forward to fair shows By Briahnna Brown bbrown@nvdaily.com The Stephens siblings, Luke, 10, Lane and Kora, both 12, of Woodstock, are each entering a different animal at the Shenandoah County Fair. Luke has his two pigs, Kora has her three boer goats and Lane has two crossbred steers.

Kora Stephens will be showing her three boer goats at the fair this year.

Luke Stephens works with one of the two pigs he will be showing at the fair.

The family has been raising animals for show for the last two years, and they each learned valuable lessons through it all. Lane learned that it takes “time, skill and patience” to raise steer, Kora learned the importance of being aware of her animal’s needs and their personality to properly care for them, and Luke learned about getting acquainted with pigs. “With pigs, you can’t just run up to them and start petting them,” Luke said. “They have to get used to you.” As 4-H members, all said they love the opportunity to meet new people, help out and interact with their community and learning about animals and agriculture through the program.

Lane Stephens will be showing two crossbred steers at the fair.

All three plan on using money earned from the fair to help with their animals next year, particularly getting feed and

supplies for them, as well as buying new animals to show. Luke added that next year he may want to get a different species of pigs.

County fair to kick off 100th anniversary with parade By Justin McIlwie It’s been decades since their last one, but the Shenandoah County Fair is bringing back the parade. The fair, which is celebrating its 100th anniversary, will kick off the festivities with a parade on Thursday in Woodstock that will feature local high school marching bands, various floats and other businesses that want to celebrate the fair’s centennial. “Back in the days of old, the fair always began with a parade to the fairgrounds,” said Matt Hyden, who, along with Mike Ashley, is a co-chair of the parade. “To help commemorate the 100th anniversary, that was something they thought Rich Cooley/Daily about bringing back. Cloverbuds often morph into active 4-H members and the Binebrink family of Strasburg has 4-H DNA going back three generations.

Resident recalls how the fair has changed over 89 years By Max Lee mlee@nvdaily.com MOUNT JACKSON - Berlin Allen, 93, first went to the Shenandoah County Fair in 1928, traveling with his family from their farm in the Mount Jackson area. “We would leave early in the morning with our horse and wagon and get to the fair and leave down there about four and get back home,” Allen said.

Berlin Allen

And then, there was the burlesque show, or the “girly show” as Allen calls it. For years, he said, the fair had a burlesque show that lasted about 15 or 20 minutes. Allen said he remembers the tickets for that show costing about $1, over six times the cost of the 15-cent admission into the fair.

Back in those early days, Allen said, the fair Even with that cost, Allen said the event was different than it is today. Near the “was one big drawing card.” stage, the fair had a trapeze set up, where He enjoyed going to the event, but eventually people would hold trapeze shows.

“Through the years, they had to build new stuff, you know, because it was getting too bad,” he said..

Allen stopped going to the show between 1941 and 1950. In 1941, he As Allen finished reminiscing about the deployed to the Pacific to fight in World burlesque show, he noted, “The good old War II. The stage is larger than the stage Allen remembers when he was young. “There’s four places down there that’s all that’s left of the fair: the old cattle barn and the old grand stand and one exhibit building and one little poultry building,” Allen said. All of the other buildings have been replaced with newer buildings or have simply gone away.

During the time Allen was gone, he said the fair had a new exhibit building put in. But as different as the fair is from when Allen was growing up, he said that it remains much the same to him today.

county Sheriff’s Office. “Back then, the sheriff’s department took care of security for the fair,” Allen said. But the Sheriff’s Office stopped working security for the fair somewhere between 1990 and 1995, Allen said. In 1995, Allen retired from the Sheriff’s Office, but his work at the fair has continued. He is going to work security at the fair again this year, at the age of 93, and he said he is looking forward to it. “I get to see a lot of old folks and people,” Allen said. “You know how that goes.”

“To me, every year of the fair is the fair,” Allen said. “Now, somebody that has only seen it once or twice coming back, And Allen has no plans to stop going to that’s altogether different. But to see it as the fair any time soon. many times as I have, it’s all the same.” “I’m going to try to until I can’t do it no By the 1980s, Allen had started working more,” Allen said. “But you get 93, you for the fair. Pageant contestants share a cultural bond By Tom Crosby news@nvdaily.com It’s been 54 years since she was named Miss Shenandoah County Pageant Queen in 1963. Jane Senseny (now Rhodes) was the fourth young woman to win the modern title and she is looking forward to meeting more than half the 56 former fair queens who will be part of the Fair’s 100th anniversary celebration, as well as the 2017 queen. That legacy gathering will be held tonight at Woodstock’s Central High School after the crowning of this year’s queen. “It will interesting to talk and see what they experienced when they won,” said Mrs. Rhodes, 74. “We can share that and what happened in Richmond.
