Welcome to Shenandoah County

Shenandoah County is 90 miles west of the nation’s capital, nestled in the Allegheny and Blue Ridge mountains in the heart of the Shenandoah Valley.

Largely an agricultural community, the 507-square-mile Shenandoah County is home to seven towns: Edinburg, Mount Jackson, New Market, Strasburg, Toms Brook, Woodstock and Maurertown. Known as The String of Pearls, each town has unique shops, restaurants and businesses. Shenandoah is a Native American name meaning “beautiful daughter of the stars.”

Woodstock, the county seat, is one of the oldest towns in the Shenandoah Valley and the fourth oldest town in Virginia. Woodstock was home to famed revolutionary, “the fighting parson,” John Peter Gabriel Muhlenberg, who came to Woodstock in 1772 to serve as pastor of the area Lutheran congregations.

Muhlenberg is famous for his fiery Sunday sermon of January 28, 1776, in which he punctuated the reading from Ecclesiastes 3:1-8. “There is a time for every purpose...a time for war, and a time for peace,” by dramatically casting off his clerical robes to reveal a uniform of the Continental Army. He served with General Washington as commanding officer of the 8th Virginia, the famous “German Regiment.”

During the Civil War, several important battles and numerous skirmishes took place up and down the Old Valley Pike (U.S. 11) and the Middle and Back Roads to the west. The Valley Pike, the only macadamized road in the area, was vital to the success and agility of General Jackson’s “foot cavalry” during the Campaign of 1862.

Gen. “Stonewall” Jackson made headquarters in several Woodstock locations, including the small brick building at the end of Lawyers Row. The limestone courthouse at

COURTESY/DEBBIE FADELEY

the center of town was visited by soldiers from both sides, including Generals Banks, Fremont, Hunter, Sheridan, Ashby, Rosser, Imboden, Jones, Hampton, Gordon, Shield, Early, and Ewell. That same old stone courthouse was built in 1795 and is now the oldest courthouse still in use west of the Blue Ridge. Union Gen. Phil Sheridan always will be remembered here for ordering “The Burning” of valley mills, barns and food supplies in order to cut off supplies for the Confederate Army.

The Shenandoah Valley has much to offer, from wine tasting at local vineyards to tours of caverns, historic towns and Early American homes. The Shenandoah Valley Music Festival (www.musicfest.org) brings summer concerts (from symphony and big band to county and folk music) to the beautiful outdoor pavilion at Orkney Springs. Or just enjoy stopping at small antique shops and other authentic family run businesses.

Skyline Drive is a nearby favorite tourist attraction as are the George Washington Forest, the New Market Battlefield State Historical Park, and local museums.

Attractions in Shenandoah County differ from the large-scale Virginia tourist sites. We attract visitors who appreciate the scenic beauty, the hospitality and the unique cultural and historic treasures of the region.

From the depths of our county’s unique limestone caverns at Shenandoah Caverns to the heights of its mountain vistas, Shenandoah County provides a wealth of yearround recreational activities and facilities.

Recreation

Outdoor lovers from all over America come to Shenandoah County to enjoy some of the finest hunting and fishing on the East Coast, or just to breathe in its natural beauty.

Over 80 river miles on the Shenandoah River and more than 77,000 acres of George Washington National Forest grace the county. Hiking trails abound on both the eastern and western slopes of this valley haven.

Canoeing, camping and backpacking challenge the outdoor lover, or take an enjoying drive around the rural landscape. For a grand “overview” of Woodstock and our famous Seven Bends of the Shenandoah River, make a point to visit the Woodstock Tower — it’s worth the trip! Shenandoah County is home to six public parks as well as two golf courses - Bryce Resort and Shenvalee, two bowling alleys, one movie theater and an amateur theater.

Muse Orchards

240-723-0672 • museorchard@yahoo.com

Muse Orchards, of Edinburg, produces sparkling wines and ciders. We follow the traditional champagnoise method, in which final fermentation is accomplished in-bottle, underground in our “cave.” We are “small batch,” and produce only a few cases of each of our different sparklings. While our estategrown apples and grapes would permit a full production of several thousand gallons, we have limited our yearly production to 250 gallons to ensure that every bottle is treated individually, from the field to winery. We do not have on-premise sales; rather, our wines and ciders are available through local stores and restaurants. In Edinburg: Heritage Mill Wines. Open MondayFriday noon-6 p.m.; Saturday noon-8 p.m.

Muse Vineyards

16 Serendipity Lane, Woodstock • 540-459-7033

Muse opened a tasting room in Woodstock in late 2016 after winning the Governor’s Cup in 2015 with the very first vintage of their Bordeaux blend Clio. There are currently 32 acres under vine on the property, situated on a bend of the Shenandoah River, and there is a 1.8 mile hiking trail through the vines. Their 2021 Rousanne just won Best in Class at the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition and three of their wines are now sold at

Mt. Vernon with a unique label. The kitchen serves a limited menu and the old farmhouse is available to rent on Airbnb. Open Sunday-Friday noon-6 p.m.; Saturday noon-8 p.m.

Swover Creek Farm Brewery

4176 Swover Creek Rd., Edinburg • 540-984-8973

Shenandoah Vineyards

3659 S. Ox Rd., Edinburg • 540-984-8699

Michael Shaps bought the vineyard Jim and Emma Randel started in 1976 on land Emma Randel’s family had owned since the 1800s. Visitors can step back in time, experience a Civil War-era barn and take in the natural beauty of the Shenandoah Valley with a local product in hand. Open Wednesday-Sunday 11 a.m.-5 p.m.

Wolf Gap Vineyard

123 Stout Rd. Edinburg • 540-984-3306

JC and Janel Laravie bought Wolf Gap in late 2021, hired a local renowned vineyard manager and winemaker, and are winning medals for their wines. The tasting room is small, but a large tasting pavilion is under construction and there are plenty of places on the 48 acre property for picnics and weddings, all with a view of Wolf Gap in Great North Mountain. Tasting room hours are Wednesday-Sunday noon-6 p.m. January and February by appointment.

There are over 20 acres under vine on the property and another 12 under Cave Ridge management a few miles away, producing one of the few Rieslings in the area along with rich full-bodied reds and several sparkling wines. The town of Edinburg is located at the base of Massanutten Mountain, alongside Stony Creek. Early Swiss settlers were so taken with this small community that they named it Edenburg, after the biblical garden. Today it’s known as Edinburg, but the little town continues to attract both residents and visitors with its friendly atmosphere and natural beauty. Edinburg features historic homes, quaint shops and galleries, and one of the few remaining pre-Civil War mills in existence.

The Historic Edinburg Mill was built by Maj. George Grandstaff in 1848. It is one of only a few that survived the burning during the Civil War. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places and located in Edinburg’s Historic District, the mill is a designated Virginia Historic Landmark. It is located on the historic Valley Pike, (U.S. Route 11), and serves as a prominent and scenic resource along this designated Virginia Scenic Byway.

The site is now home to a visitor center and the Museum at the Edinburg Mill. The museum tells the story of the mill, the town, the Valley Pike, the Shenandoah River, and the railroad. A 50-seat theater features a 45-minute film titled “The Burning,” which is based on John Heatwole’s book of the same name.

Mount Jackson originally was known as Mount Pleasant. On Jan. 28, 1826, an act of the General Assembly of Virginia changed the name of the village in honor of President Andrew Jackson, who was a frequent visitor on his travels from Washington, D.C., to his home in Tennessee.

The town’s location along the Valley Pike, and at the terminus of the Manassas Gap Railroad, prompted the Confederate government to establish a military hospital there in the spring of 1861. Information about the hospital can be found at its original site across from the Our Soldiers Cemetery in Mount Jackson.

Mount Jackson is home to the Bowman-Shannon Cultural Arts Center, the historic Union Church, a circa 1947 Duckpin Bowling Alley, and the above-mentioned Our Soldiers Cemetery, the only Civil War cemetery in Virginia with all Confederate soldiers buried there.

Visit the Mount Jackson Town Hall and tour the Mount Jackson Museum. The museum features an array of exhibits and information about the town’s history. A visitor center is part of the town hall complex.

Toms Brook, located between the towns of Strasburg and Woodstock, witnessed Civil War action in 1864. The Battle of Toms Brook engaged over 9,000 Union and Confederate soldiers. The battle, also known as the “Woodstock Races,” resulted in a Union victory.

Toms Brook today is home to artisans and farms. The small town offers several travel centers. When traveling U.S. Route 11, be sure to note the renovated Toms Brook School. The old school found a new use as affordable housing. The project was a team effort of several agencies that served a need while saving a historic building.

Centrally located in Shenandoah County, Woodstock is the County Seat, steeped in Revolutionary and Civil War history and a hub for folks to visit and gather.

Woodstock has many historic homes, buildings, and churches that will be of interest to any history lover. Don’t miss the original Shenandoah County Court House designed by Thomas Jefferson. Constructed in 1795 of native limestone, it is the oldest courthouse west of the Blue Ridge Mountains in continuous use. The Woodstock Museum and the Wickham House are filled with treasures from Woodstock’s rich history and are a must-see as well if you’re learning more about the area.

Woodstock isn’t only known to those interested in history, though. Visitors and locals love the town for the many locally owned restaurants and shops plus an array of national chain restaurants and hotels. You’ll find many retail shops with items including antiques, wines, gourmet pantry items, gently new and used clothing, lawn and garden plants and items, and more!

From Woodstock, it is easy to get to all of the popular outdoor recreation sites like the Woodstock Tower atop Massanutten Mountain, the newly opened Seven Bends State Park where you can hike and enjoy the river, and the Wolf Gap Recreation area with its primitive camping sites and fabulous hikes for some of the most amazing views.

Woodstock is an authentic place that sets the standard for “hometown”. Whether born and raised here or a relative newcomer, young family or retiree, what has drawn us all here is the Woodstock lifestyle - one defined by a slower pace of life, where you get to exhale, escaping the hustle and bustle, all while enjoying the beauty of the Shenandoah Valley.
