Pushing the frontiers of old technology: The Burnshire Dam is once again producing electricity Max Thornberry mthornberry@nvdaily.com WOODSTOCK – In 1921, the Burnshire Dam brought electricity to Woodstock. Harnessing the power of the river to deliver light and energy to the town has been a process fraught with fits and starts since then. “This facility powered the town of Woodstock,” Dr. Lee Harvey said. “It [produced] the first electrons flowing up into there ever. This facility brought electric light to Woodstock.” Harvey, an emergency room doctor, and his wife Melissa purchased the dam in 2012 after it bounced from owner to owner, slipping through cracks and falling into disrepair. Six years later, the Harveys re-started the legacy established 93 years ago. The dam produced power for the town with Rich Cooley/Daily the help of a diesel generator. But they pay close to 12 cents per kilowatt to power their plant — even though they are producing the power on site. Over the next six months, the Harveys will place the rebuilt turbine and install a second generator. Community turns out to beautify and dedicate new pavilion Max Thornberry mthornberry@nvdaily.com Downtown Strasburg’s facelift received some finishing touches Oct. 29 as volunteers, public works and town employees got their hands dirty preparing to dedicate the Strasburg Square Market Pavilion. Michelle Bixler, economic development director for Strasburg, said the day couldn’t have gone better. “This is like the best day ever,” Bixler said. “Not only did we complete everything, but we started ahead of time… we got everything done and then some. Everyone came together and used the space as it will be used in the future.” Volunteers were out in force. Young and old, experienced hands and newcomers all pitched in planting bulbs, spreading mulch and laying the foundations for a welcoming Rich Cooley/Daily gathering space. For the love of all things cheesecake By Ashley Miller For The Northern Virginia Daily For over 30 years, Jodi Jenkins of Strasburg and owner of Laurel Hill Desserts, has been sharing her love of baking with her close friends, family and a handful of other dessert enthusiasts. But it was this past summer, at the Shenandoah County Fair, that her passion for baking won her the blue ribbon in the Virginia Egg Council’s Berry Contest for her famous raspberry cheesecakes. A happy, colorful place: Korjus’ Country Store offers sweet treats and a bit of everything while shoppers snack on whoopie pies or brownies that Korjus sells. She has a small kitchen in the back where she makes cookies.

Max Thornberry mthornberry@nvdaily.com STRASBURG – Kathryn Korjus brims with energy. Flitting around her small, crowded shop just off Interstate 81 on U.S. Route 11, she fiddles and arranges minute details, ensuring nothing sits out of place. Korjus said she took great lengths to ensure she could set up shop just off the main street into town. “I thought this is great because it’s kind of like a gateway into Strasburg,” Korjus said. “Plus, I can draw on travelers.” Before buying the property, Korjus had to sell a 20-acre plot she owned. She put a lease-option on the site of her future store, and has owned the property for six years but could only start focusing on her business in the last year. Korjus said travelers only make up a fraction of her business, but she makes sure she can draw them in. Sometimes they will wander across the street from the Fairfield Inn or the gas station next door. No matter who comes in, or where they’re going, Korjus

“I make the cookies,” Korjus said, giving herself a joking pat on the back. “A lot of times I’ll put signs out about the baked goods just to draw people in.” This store is Korjus’ happy place, she says. said she makes sure to tell them they should keep going further into town. “I try to suggest to travelers to take the couple minutes to go into town,” she said. “I’m always suggesting they go in to see our lovely little town.” Less intrepid travelers or those only making one stop have a maze of a store to traverse. Besides a few vintage items — lady’s boots and a handful of jackets — everything in the store is new. Locally made jams, jellies and creamed honey can be taken for the road

Her tastes are discriminating, however. She said she has a vision for her store, and even if she likes something, it might not fit into what she imagines her store to be. “Fun, warm and friendly,” Korjus said are the first words that describe her vision. “I like to be here because it’s colorful.”
