Shenandoah County Fair to lower online ticket price By Donald Lambert The Northern Virginia Daily A change is coming to the Shenandoah County Fair’s ticket prices. 4-H, FFa students to show off animals at the county fair 12
By Josette Keelor The Northern Virginia Daily Nicolas Binebrink, 13, names all of his goats for Disney characters. Lilo and Stitch will go to the Shenandoah County Fair this year, along with older goat Pepper, who got his name from the film “One Hundred and One Dalmatians.”
Lindsey Rigby, 15, of Woodstock, said her mom was the impetus to her joining 4-H. “I think she in a way kind of encouraged me to join,” Lindsey said. “She always thought it was a good idea.” Lindsey started by joining a 4-H goat club and showing goats and later moved onto sheep and cows.
Nani, who was in the same January litter as Lilo and Stitch, will stay home from the fair to breed for next year, said Nicolas, who hopes to sell the other two.
“I got interested after going to the fair each year,” she said. “After the goat show, I would go to sheep shows.”
He started showing goats five years ago and will join other area 4-H members and FFA students at the fair, scheduled for Aug. 26-31 at the fairgrounds in Woodstock, 300 Fairground Road.
Now starting her fourth year, Lindsey praised 4-H for building children’s leadership skills.
“My parents bought me my first goats, and I just went on from there,” he said. “They’re very interesting animals.” Nicolas, an eighth-grader at Signal Knob Middle School, said he mainly shows goats but has also shown rabbits and chickens. At his family’s Strasburg home, he’s raising Netherland dwarf rabbits, one of the smallest breeds. He also has a leghorn chicken named Bigfoot and a buff Orpington chicken named Ethel. “I like getting to learn more about the animals themselves and what to do for them and how to take care of them,” said Nicolas, who was planning to take an agriculture leadership class at school this year.
After that, she said, “I really just liked the idea of showing cattle.”
A sophomore at Central High School, she’s in multiple 4-H clubs (Goat Club, Nicholas Brinebrink, 13, of Strasburg, plays with his goat Stitch. At home, she also has rabbits, chickens and “one really big old pig.” This year, she will be showing two market goats and a market steer.

NOW OFFERING: NEW Technology For Skin Tightening & Anti-Aging! Are you interested in low maintenance anti-aging treatments? Look no further than
Intense Pulsed Light Therapy! Using various wavelengths of light, Intense Pulsed Light Therapy reveals clearer skin by removing unwanted:
Help fill Christmas wishes with the “empty Stocking project” Summer isn’t even over yet, but members of the Shenandoah County Ruritan Clubs are gearing up to do some Christmas shopping for 400 of Shenandoah County’s children in need. The children, whose names are approved through the Shenandoah County Department of Social Services, will receive Christmas packages of clothes and toys through the “Empty Stocking Project.” Now in its 34th year, this Shenandoah County wide project truly demonstrates the Ruritan motto of “Community people meeting community needs.” As part of their community service work, the Ruritan volunteers organize the program, promote the fund raising, shop for and wrap the gifts, and distribute the presents. The program has some unique features. Through the Department of Social Services, the parents or guardians provide a suggested idea list tailored to each child. All of the children in a family are then shopped for by the same volunteer. This enables the shopper to balance the gifts between toys and clothes and also maintain a balance among all children in the family. Many of the shoppers approach this as though they were shopping for their own families. It’s not unusual to see lists that are predominantly clothes or in some cases simply “anything.” The shoppers handle those instances with appropriate heartfelt care and consideration, and always include a toy. The program depends on the continuing monetary generosity of individuals, churches, and other organizations. This year’s goal is $30,000. Donations to the project may be sent to: Ruritan Empty Stocking, P.O. Box 411, Strasburg, VA 22657. For more information on the program, contact John Gaunt at 540-933-6690.
