It accepts 10 contestants per audition night, having already judged talented singers, dancers, comedians and tricksters who do magic or even toss Frisbees.

pringtime in the valley has had a slow start this year, but in Winchester plans for the 87th Shenandoah Valley Apple Blossom Festival are in full bloom. Singing its theme as “The Land of Pink & Green,” the festival scheduled from April 25 to May 4 will welcome warmer weather with music, food and nine days of nearly nonstop parties, said the festivalʼs head of publicity, Susie Iden.

Contestants have traveled from as far away as Virginia Beach and parts of West Virginia and Maryland, which Gaines said could be because of a void of comparative regional competitions. “I would say that, number one, plus I think with having a $5,000 grand prize, people know itʼs a pretty serious competition,” she said. Cash prizes, which include $1,500 to the runner up and $500 to the second runner up, were raised through sponsorships and ticket sales from previous festival years.

Beginning with the United Bank Bloominʼ Wine Fest on April 25 and 26 and ending with two parades, a fireworks display, a Saturday morning coronation of Queen Shenandoah, a bluegrass festival and Anthonyʼs Weekend in the Park May 3 and 4, the week also will include carnival, circus, Breakfast Walk, 10K race, pie-baking contest, golf tournament, band competition and trail of downtown midway tents will keep things rocking and rolling all week long. “Thereʼs something for everyone to enjoy,” Iden said. “A lot of family entertainment.” One of this yearʼs biggest changes began this winter with auditions for the Apple Blossomʼs Got Talent competition, something festival President Lou Ann Thompson called “phenomenal.”

The Weekend in the Park will return to its roots, according to Thompson. “Itʼs going to be quite different,” she said. “Crafters will meander through the park. Probably 10 years ago it was like that, and everybody seems to be excited to go back to the old layout.”

The Oldies Rock ʻnʼ Roll Dance has been moved from the festivalʼs final Saturday to Apple Blossomʼs Got Talent will hold its the previous weekend and will be from 7 to final celebration from 7 to 11:30 p.m. May “Itʼs taken off like wildfire,” she said. In weeks to come, the festival office will begin announcing celebrities who intend to join in the festivities, including the Grand Marshal of the Grand Feature Parade, the Firefightersʼ Marshal of the Friday night parade, and Queen Shenandoah herself. After such a cold winter, Thompson said, “I think everybodyʼs really looking forward to breaking out of their homes and getting involved in some warm weather activities.” For more information about the 87th Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival, call 540-662-3863 or visit thebloom.com. MARCH 2014 Myth #1: All grass is created equal.

Dispelling Six Common Lawn Care Myths The lawn is the backdrop to the home and essential to curb appeal. While keeping a healthy lawn may seem straightforward (mow, water, fertilize, etc.), don’t be fooled by some common lawn care myths. By Family Features

The Truth: Grass and their seeds come in many different varieties, all with various maintenance, climate and mower requirements. While some varieties require more sunlight, others may be prone to certain diseases. The type of grass and scope of land you need to mow will determine how powerful of a lawn mower you’ll need. Large lawns with thicker, tougher grass will require a mower with higher horsepower and bigger, taller wheels. Varieties of grass that have thinner blades and slower growth, or a small backyard space, can be maintained easily with a lower horsepower machine. Riding mowers like the John Deere 100 Series come in a variety of models to fit different needs. Myth #2: The shorter I cut the grass, the less often I need to mow. The Truth: For the best quality turf, only remove one-third of the grass blade with each mow. Shorter clippings break down more easily, allowing some of the natural nitrogen to return to the soil. If you cut too much at one time, the long clippings can cause stress on the grass, inhibiting healthy growth.

comes with a mulching feature on the mowing deck, to help return the clippings to the soil. Myth #4: Focus on the green. The Truth: While grass is what we see and tend to, the soil is the most essential component for a healthy growth year-round. Soil supplies the roots with necessary nutrients, which in turn yield a beautiful lawn. Consider taking a soil sample to your local university extension program or landscape supplier for soil analysis. This will help determine the best type of fertilizer to use throughout the year. Myth #5: Keep a consistent mowing pattern. The Truth: It’s easy to fall into a mowing routine, but frequently cutting grass in the same direction can mat down the turf and inhibit growth. By varying the mowing pattern, you will reduce strain on the turf and encourage a healthier, more beautiful lawn. Myth # 6: You’re off duty in the winter.

healthy lifestyle is necessary at any age, but for those over 50, it’s especially important. As you age, your body changes, and your risk for health problems increases. Fortunately, there are three simple things you can do to lead a healthier and happier life. Eat Heart Healthy If high blood pressure isn’t controlled through lifestyle changes and/or medicine, it can lead to stroke, heart disease, eye problems and other serious health issues.

Three Tips for Staying Healthy Over 50 By Family Features

whole-grain foods each day (16g per serving or 48g per day). Get Moving Physical activity and regular exercise can decrease the risk of heart disease, stroke, colon cancer, diabetes and high blood pressure. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend those 65 years of age or older, who are generally fit, and have no limiting health conditions, try to get: • Two hours and 30 minutes (150 minutes) of moderate-intensity aerobic activity, such as brisk walking or yoga, and

A great way to establish a heart healthy diet is by reducing your sodium intake, which may reduce the risk of high blood pressure. Starting the day with a low-sodium ready-to-eat breakfast cereal is just one way to choose a healthier lifestyle. For example, according to a recent survey, 9 out of 10 physicians recommend Post Shredded Wheat cereal as part of a low-sodium diet to help support healthy blood pressure levels, (based on an online survey of 400 physicians conducted by Wakefield Research. Results of any sample are subject to sampling variation).

• Muscle-strengthening activities two or more days a week. You should consult your physician or other health care professional before making changes to your diet or exercise plan to determine what is right for your needs. In addition to taking up walking or yoga, joining group activities or sports are great ways to keep moving. In 2014, Post Shredded Wheat will be partnering with the National Senior Games to grant 20 seniors the opportunity to participate in their local Senior Games. Those who submit entries will also be asked to sign a petition to get the National Senior Games to add a 20th sport in 2015. To apply and sign the Post Shredded Wheat “Game On” petition, visit www.PostShreddedWheatGames.com.

Enjoy Nutrient-Dense Foods As you age, your body needs fewer calories for energy – but still needs the same amount of nutrients. It’s important to make your calories count by eating foods packed with good nutrition such as: • Fruits and vegetables: Fresh, canned, frozen – it doesn’t matter. Vegetables are loaded with vitamins and minerals your body needs. • Protein: Add some variety to your diet with delicious protein sources such as fish, beans and peas. • Whole grains: The Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommends at least three servings of

MOVING DAY In today’s tightened economy, more and more people are opting for DIY moves. Not only can personally overseeing your move save money, it can give you a sense of security from hav-

PACKING 101 You can set yourself up for a hassle-free move and keep your possessions safe by carefully and properly packing your belongings. The experts at Penske offer these tips to get you started: Major Appliances Check with the dealer for any special moving instructions. Remove loose fittings and accessories, and pack them separately. Tie down, tape or wedge all movable parts and doors, and pad the exterior well. Books Use small boxes so they wonʼt be too heavy. To protect the spines, pack books flat, alternating bindings. Fill empty spaces with wadded paper and reinforce the box bottoms with extra tape. Bureaus and Dressers Fill drawers with small breakable items, and cushion them with loose clothes. Secure drawers with a pad or blanket (tape can remove the finish) and tie with rope. Do not overload drawers with heavy items. Dishes and Glasses Individually wrap each piece in plastic before protective newspaper to minimize dishwashing later. Place saucers, plates and platters on edge — not stacked flat. Place cups and bowls inside each other; wrapping three to four in a bundle. Fill empty box space with wadded-up newspaper. Lamps Disassemble and pack small bases in dresser drawers surrounded by loose clothing. Pack large bases in boxes stuffed with wadded paper. Box shades individually in boxes with plenty of tissue paper; avoid newspaper — it will smudge. Always pack light bulbs separately. Mirrors, Paintings and Prints Wrap small items in paper and pack in boxes. For larger glass-faced frames and mirrors, use bubble packing and corrugated cardboard to create a case and tape well to secure. Mark “glass” or “fragile” on the box, and always load and store on end. Paint and Flammables Donʼt move paint and flammables, such as alcohol, solvents, lighter fluid, ammunition and greasy mops or rags. Dispose of them properly instead. Radios, TVs and Computers Box upright and make sure items are well padded on all sides, with extra layers on TV and monitor screens. Surround console-size equipment with furniture pads; move and load upright. Tools and Gardening Equipment Drain hoses, coil and pack in boxes. Fill remaining space with lawn sprinklers, small garden hand tools and so forth. Tie rakes, shovels and other longhandled tools together with rope or tape.

“Do-it-yourselfers are becoming the norm for residential moves, and with the right planning, managing a move yourself can really pay off,” said Don Mikes, Senior Vice President of Rental for Penske Truck Leasing. Above all, plan ahead. Reserve your truck early and begin packing nonessential items as soon as possible. Give yourself time to sort items for donation or a garage sale. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y. in 1931, Kunstler has been painting images of historic American Civil War scenes since the 1980s. He has established himself as one of the most popular Civil War artists in the country, consistently earning acclaim for his work.

In 1999, former Virginia Governor James Gilmore declared a “Mort Kunstler Day.” Four years later, he was named the official artist for the 2003 film “Gods and Generals.”

Earlier this year he was one of only six previous artists to be honored by the Booth Western Art Museum in Georgia, and the Norman Rockwell Museum in Massachusetts will also hold an exhibit featuring his work in November.

For Kunstler, it all stems from a simple love for painting.

A painter all his life, Kunstler said he showed a lot of talent when he was young. He went to New Yorkʼs Pratt Institute to study illustration during a time, he said, when it was a dying field. During his time there, Kunstler said art was going out and television advertising was replacing the money going into print media. But he stuck with it, he said. “I set out to be an illustrator, and Iʼve been doing it ever since,” he said. After finding Civil War art by happenstance, Kunstler has painted images of Strasburg, several set in Front Royal and others set in Winchester. “Iʼve done many, all over the state of Virginia,” he said. “I love painting. Is your child suffering or showing symptoms of ADD or ADHD?

• Struggling in School • Emotional Out Bursts • Inability To Focus These Are Brain Based Disorders & We Can Help!

Could NeuroIntegration Therapy be the possible answer youʼve been waiting for? The CDC considers childhood neuro-developmental disorders a “Major Health Threat.” NeuroFeedback Therapy is a groundbreaking new approach to neuro-developmental disorders that is gaining popularity with many doctors and wellness specialists. Many psychological issues that we face are do to abnormal brainwave patterns. If you signal the brain through Photic stim lights, the brain will learn to make healthy brainwave patterns through guided feed-back. Continuous feedback retrains the brain to reduce unhealthy activity and stay within healthy ranges. Eventually, the brain learns how to stay within healthy ranges without Neurofeedback training, and is able to sustain healthy activity independently. Neurofeedback is able to effectively reorganize the functional pathways in the brain.

Re-training unhealthy brainwaves patterns often eliminates or improves symptoms of:

ADD or ADHD NeuroFeedback is ranked as a “Level 1, Best Support” treatment for ADD/ADHD by the American Academy of Pediatrics. Here is what some of the experts say... “There is mounting evidence that neurofeedback training can significantly improve cognitive functioning in ADHD children.” Dr. Mario Beauregard, Principal Researcher “The literature suggests that EEG biofeedback (neurofeedback) therapy should play a major therapeutic role in many difficult areas. In my opinion, if any medication had demonstrated such a wide spectrum of efficacy it would be universally and widely used.” Frank H. Duffy, MD, Harvard-trained Neurologist

Have You Heard About Neurofeedback?

BRAIN MAP Our doctors are able to capture and record a window of brain activity from a cap placed on the scalp. It is an important tool we use to evaluate your brainwaves and identify opportunities to improve communication between various regions of the brain.

ANALYZE RESULTS A child's report is generated, containing a detailed analysis of their brain and brainwaves. Areas that are outside the normal ranges are identified and a treatment plan and protocols are automatically generated.

TREATMENT After we review the EEG report with the parents, they are ready to start their child’s training sessions. The normative database generates a 20 session protocol, 30 minutes each, which are repeated 2-3 times per week. Sessions are enjoyable, with the child watching a movie through the photic glasses as the system corrects the neural pathways. Repetition teaches the brain how to make optimal patterns independently. Research shows that results are often permanent and further sessions are no longer necessary.

P.S. Why have your child suffer for years in misery? Thatʼs no way to live, not when there could be an easy solution to your problem.

Call 540-678-1212 today. Dr. Erica Riggleman DC, D.PSc and Dr. Evan Riggleman DC, D.PSc of Riggleman Chiropractic will accept the first 25 callers for a $99 brain map and neurological exam, normally $550! 248617

Discovery Museum includes expanded favorites, new additions

The head of a 4,000 lb triceratops replica that will be part of the future display inside the Shenandoah Valley Discovery Museum in Winchester. Rich Cooley/Daily

The Shenandoah Valley Discovery Museum in Winchester has all the familiar favorites of its old location as well as a plethora of never-before-seen exhibits. By Ryan Cornell WINCHESTER -- Its new location at 19 W. Cork St. is scheduled to open this spring and includes nearly 20,000 square feet on three floors and a rooftop “Sky Level.” The loads of additional space -- the museum previously laid claim to 4,600 square feet on one level -- has allowed for more energy and opportunities, according to Marketing and Advancement Director Chris Delaughter.

“It was definitely full,” she said about the museumʼs former building, which closed last month. “It was challenging to switch out exhibits, there was so much in there.”

She said the apple packing shed, one exhibit most people remember from the museum, is now more than three times its original size.
