Throughout history, the Winchester-Frederick County area has played an important role in the development of our nation. Winchester was the first English-speaking town west of the Blue Ridge Mountains, and Frederick County was the military and political training ground for George Washington. In the 18th and 19th centuries, The Great Valley Road, now known as Route 11, served as a migration trail. In Winchester, visitors can walk the same streets that George Washington, Patsy Cline, and Stonewall Jackson once walked! See impressive monuments of polar explorer Rear Admiral Richard E. Byrd, General Daniel Morgan of Revolutionary War fame, and
George Washington, the father of our country. View the amazing architecture of buildings that witnessed some of our nation’s greatest events and leaders. Six major battles took place in Winchester and Frederick County during the Civil War, and the town changed hands approximately 72 times - more than any other town in the country! General Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson and his wife lived in Winchester while he planned the famous 186162 Valley Campaign. The cottage that he used as his office is now a museum. A Civil War Orientation Center is located within the Winchester-Frederick County Visitor Center. An interactive

FREDERICK COUNTY Millions of Americans can trace their heritage to Frederick County, VA! During the 1730’s, Frederick County
was the destination of early settlers – newly arrived English, Scots, Irish, and German immigrants who came south from Pennsylvania in search of good, cheap farmland. Eager to have the lands west of the Blue Ridge occupied to protect the colony of Virginia against Indian attack, Royal Governor William Gooch permitted dissident faiths to settle here, and to practice their religion instead of requiring them to join the Episcopal Church. Frederick County was established in 1738, and included much of West Virginia. In 1745, more than 4,000 people lived in old Frederick County and in what today are Clarke, Shenandoah, Warren, and Page Counties in Virginia, and Berkeley, Hampshire, Hardy, and Jefferson Counties in West Virginia.
