Traditional crowd pleasers are returning, like Kids Korner. It’s the 46th annual Frederick County By Tom Crosby
Fair beginning Friday with 30,000 to 35,000 visitors expected over the six-day run – if the weather is good – at the Martinsburg Pike fairgrounds (Route 11) in Clear Brook.
“We are always at the mercy of the weather,” said Mary Jane Leight, who is helping with promotions this year.
Events include Go-Kart racing, box turtle race, Monster Truck show, truck and tractor pulls, horse show, apple pie eating contest, demolition derby, Tot Pig Scramble catching greased piglets, and the Mutton Busting contest riding sheep. And there are carnival rides – 20 are scheduled – with names like Super Shot,
Side Winder, Muscat Express, Merry Mixer, Hi-Roller, Scat, Hustler and Cliff Hanger. Wilson’s Wild Animal Park will sponsor a petting zoo with animals such as llamas, goats, sheep and a camel. Hundreds of animals occupy their respective barns, many raised by members of Future Farmers of America, 4-H clubs. High School students from James Wood, Sherando and Millbrook, plus area middle schools, enter livestock competitions for the best beef, hogs, sheep, goats, lambs, poultry and rabbits.
The money they earn by selling an animal can pay expenses for the year or help them purchase an animal for the following year, said Leight. “If they are aging out, they can use it for college,” she said. “They don’t spend it frivolously.” The regimen is strict, and students must personally care for their entries, feeding, housing and cleaning them, and they also have to donate time to help the fair as part of the entry requirements. Competition occurs in contests encompassing home economics like sewing, educational exhibits and agriculture,

including crops and animal pen decorating.
Home Economics includes food cooking contests, with winning entries always good enough to eat and often sold. Other contests include canning, flowers, clothing, fine arts, creative crafts, hobbies and photography with youth (students in age categories) and adult divisions.
The roughly 200 volunteers make it all work, many of them having volunteered for decades.
“It helps make the fair run smoother,” said Leight. “They come back year after year, and they know what to expect. It makes the whole week flow a little bit better.”
First-time visitors to the fair with small kids will have a place specially outfitted to entertain the wee ones.
Kids Korner is geared toward little kids and is where they can stay and play free for as long as they would like in the airconditioned Whitacre Building.
There are balloons, clowns, pedal tractors, activity tables for coloring, Legos
and other age-appropriate activities. “They come out of there kicking and screaming,” said Leight. “They love it.” It helps the fair “dote on little children just as much as we do with the high school kids,” said Jennifer Carter.
Another volunteer is Stacia Morefield, a teacher at Robert E. Tyler Middle School in Stephens City, who took over responsibility four years ago for the fair’s five pageants with contestants aged 4 to 22. Pageant contests are held before the fair begins.
Carter is in her eighth year as chairwoman for concessions and has been helping with the fair for 22 years, having shown steer, hogs and lambs while in high school.

Let’s do this. Do people ever ask you why you do what you do? Farming is hard work. And there are lots of obstacles. We get that. But we also know that you’re doing what you love. And a visit to the fair reminds everyone why agriculture is so important to Frederick County. There’s nothing we’d rather do than provide financing to the farmers in Virginia. For over 100 years, we’ve been helping rural America grow great things – whether it’s crops, or cattle, or kids.
