technology. His studio, Pangea Maps, makes topographic maps of coastlines and lakes throughout North America and Australia, as well as custom maps of any seascape or lakeside locale. (www.pangeamaps.com )
If you’ve got avid travelers on your gift list this year, or just armchair ones, consider getting them a custom map. Maps of favorite places might commemorate special trips or experiences, and can appeal to any age or gender.
Pangea’s maps have a monochromatic look, as much artwork as topography.
Map Your Travels, in St. Louis Park, Minnesota, has some options. One of its maps shows all the national parks, with pins to chart your visits.
Percy decided to start the mapmaking business after he gave his first one to his dad on Father’s Day.
“We had one family who had kept track of all the parks they’d visited together over the years, and then gave a map to each of their five kids, so the next generation could map their national park visits,” said Nancy Spangrud of Map Your Travels.

COMPLETE AUTO & TRUCK REPAIR I could have asked for.” He says one client had recently moved her mother into a residential care home, and had Percy create a Pangea map of the family’s lakeside cabin. The family wrote him to say the map created a calm and peaceful setting for their mom to look at, and was a creative way to help her and visitors recall happy memories of their time at the lake. If you’d like your 3-D lake map to provide additional geographic information, consider the detailed, colored, birch-wood maps from www.lakehouselifestyle.com. The Lake Michigan model, for example, situates the waterway on a state map, providing a sense of its enormous size. Points of interest include deepest point and shoreline length. Maps also may be ordered as printed throw pillows, trays and clocks. At www.Minted.com, you provide an address and they’ll create a custom pigment-print map on acid-free paper. Choose from an array of colors or metallic foils. Pick a city, or zero in on a favorite neighborhood. New York’s Art Prints Vintage studio will create a heart-shaped montage of up to three locations, using scans of vintage maps. The artwork could make a thoughtful shower, wedding, anniversary or long-distance-relationship gift. (www.etsy.com/shop/ArtPrintsVintage ) For adventuresome friends or loved ones, consider one of Amelia Gier’s collages of maps assembled to look like mountain peaks. Choose any four places. The Duvall, Washington, artist also offers maps cut into maple leaf (fun for Canadians), diamond or bird shapes. “We have a vast resource of maps,” she says, “so even small towns are no problem most of the time.” (www.etsy.com/shop/AGierDesign ) Craft beer aficionados might like a Baltic birch map of the U.S. with cutout holes to display memorable brews from one’s travels. (www.uncommongoods.com ) And Portland, Maine, artisans John and Charlotte Guptill will craft a key ring for you that immortalizes a favorite location in resin and brass, tethered to a bungee cord. They also make cufflinks, pendants, wine stoppers and paperweights. (www.chartmetalworks.com )

Creative ways to reuse Christmas cards Roughly 1.6 billion Christmas cards, including boxed cards, are purchased in a given year. That’s quite a lot of cards to address and mail, and many festive greetings for recipients to read and display. With so much money and effort put into sharing Christmas greetings, some people may wonder how they can prolong the merriment offered by these cards. Here are some creative ways to put Christmas cards to new use once this holiday season has come and gone. Make your own gift tags. Christmas card stock is the perfect medium to turn into gift tags for presents. Cut the cards into squares or rectangles or use a stencil to create whatever shape you desire. Then use a hole punch to create a space for ribbon or another tie. Use the tag to dress up gifts with something more unique than self-stick tags.
Get magnetized. All it takes is a scissor, some glue and sheets of magnet for a decorative and fun craft project. Turn favorite Christmas cards into mementos that can be saved year after year, which also will dress up refrigerators or other magnetic surfaces. This idea works well for photo greeting cards as well.
mantle or another prominent area. If cards are too large, punch out large circles from the cards and then attach those disks to heavy thread.
Make Christmas card ornaments. Use the cards to create uniquely shaped ornaments for the tree. Cards can be turned into block shapes and hung with ribbon. Another idea is to punch out circles or ovals from the cards and tile them on a foam egg to look like a multicolored pine cone. Explore your creative side and decorate your tree at the same time.
Frame favorite cards. Make greeting cards a permanent part of holiday decor by framing the most decorative ones you receive. Use these frames year after year and put them on display with other holiday decorations.
Decorate your packages. Instead of overspending on preprinted gift bags, make your own. Buy plain bags in a solid color and then embellish them with cutout patterns or pictures from Christmas cards.
Make a wine bottle gift tag. Use a 11â „4-inch hole punch to create an opening for the neck of a wine bottle on a piece of folded card stock. Glue Create greeting card garlands. a greeting card to the portion of the Display cards by stringing them card stock that will lay flush with the together and hanging them from the wine bottle and you have a

Every December, the various generations gather to make the sausage that Katie Kennedy Westra’s great, great grandma brought from Sweden. “Grandma tells us all what to do,” she said. “It’s always such a hoot.” They serve the sausage with mustard and lingonberries at their Christmas celebration. While the meal remains a way for Westra and her siblings to stay connected to their roots, they recently discovered that their family in Sweden no longer makes the sausage. “I have a cousin over there who never even heard of it,” said Westra, 35. “She asked me to send the recipe.”

fair,” she said. “She’s very into it.” Dustin Shearon, 45, would never attempt to make Moravian Sugar Cake, his favorite holiday treat, at home. For him, the store-bought version brings back memories of his mother and grandmother taking him to Dewey’s Bakery in his hometown, Winston-Salem, North Carolina. The cinnamon and sugar coffee-style cake, which was brought to the region by Moravian settlers in the mid-1700s, remains a local favorite. Many children are introduced to it during school field trips to a living history village known as Old Salem. Shearon was delighted to discover that a grocery store in his new home town of Charlotte, North Carolina, had started stocking the Dewey’s cake at the holidays. It offered him a way to share stories about his childhood with his son and daughter. “It’s a connection to my past, and a way to talk about the life I shared with my mom and grandma,” he said. He serves the cake on Thanksgiving and Christmas: Not having it, he says, “would be like not having sweet potato casserole on Thanksgiving. I would be distraught if I could not get my Moravian sugar cake.” Josh McCutchen, Dewey’s vice president of marketing, said the company ships the cakes all over the country during the holiday season. Ann Jones, meanwhile, ships cinnamon sticks to her grandchildren in New York every Thanksgiving and Christmas to give them a taste of Ohio, where she grew up. She also keeps some of the cinnamon sticks — made from layers of sweet dough and cinnamon at The Original Goodie Shop in Columbus — in her freezer at home in Jupiter Island, Florida. “My grandchildren have never been to Ohio. They don’t have any connection to Columbus, but they love cinnamon sticks,” she said. GIVE THE GIFT OF
