Since 1899, the VFW has been the nation’s leading veterans service organization in the fight to better the lives of all those who’ve worn the uniform of the United States military.
We provide transportation to veterans for appointments at the VA Medical Center, assist veterans and widows with VA claims. We also provided tremendous financial aid to homeless and other needy veterans and their families.
The VFW Auxiliary exists to help honor, serve and assist our many Veterans of this country who have given so much to assure our freedom. We would like to invite you to become a member of our organization.
Locally the VFW and the Auxiliary annually give thousands of dollars to other volunteer organizations, food banks, the Empty Stocking Fund just to name a few.
The VFW is one of the most respected voices in Washington D.C. and within local governments across America. We advocate for justice for our nation’s veterans, service members and military families on an array of issues and continue to be the voice for veterans everywhere.
To all veterans, thank you for your service! We invite you to join us. Hal F. Sharpe Commander VFW Post 2447 Edinburg, VA 100 Veterans Way | 540-984-4355

Jessica Blights, the administrator for the Winchester area, said the volunteer opportunities in the community are endless.
Within 50 miles of Strasburg, 58 volunteer opportunities present themselves. They include volunteering for the Humane Society of Shenandoah Inc., Response, Family Promise, Greenfield Senior Living, CCC Legacy, Museum of the Shenandoah Valley, Faith in Action, the Salvation Army, and United Way.
“The most important thing for the community to understand is that the site is free,” Blights said. “I can’t stress that enough.”
Blights said she maintains the backside of the site for Winchester, Harper’s Ferry, Charles Town, West Virginia, Berryville, and Shenandoah and Warren counties by reviewing posts and connecting volunteers with nonprofits.
“Some volunteer projects listed are reoccurring while some are just for a single day,” she said. “High school students, Boy Scouts, the elderly. You name it. They help. There’s something about serving that sparks a change in people. Our goal is to make this happen.”
The mission behind JustServe.org is not to solve world hunger immediately, but to serve local communities. Their efforts aren’t always large, a little bit of change here, a few hours there can quickly add up to make a real difference.
“As we work side-by-side and learn from each other, mutual understanding increases, misconceptions can be corrected and new friendships are built,” their website states.

Pedaling across America: Local teen will cross nation to raise money, awareness for MS By Ashley Miller amiller@nvdaily.com
WINCHESTER – Emily Gregory, 18, is taking her ambitions to the next level to raise money and awareness for multiple sclerosis with a cross-country bike ride as part of the Bike the US for MS team. She is one of 20 individuals participating in the TransAmerica journey that will take her 3,785 miles.
“I’m a hiker, not a biker,” Gregory said. “I've never done something of this magnitude. So I’m equally excited and nervous.”
As a freshman at Virginia Tech, and graduate of Sherando High School, Gregory’s story started with a poster she saw for Bike the US for MS that sparked instant interest. After discovering the on-campus representative through a fellow classmate, Gregory said she knew immediately it was something she wanted to do.
“It was all very spontaneous,” she said about her decision to join the 2018 team.
With no personal connection to anyone with multiple sclerosis, some would ask why Gregory is participating. Gregory said she’s fully aware and understands the effects of MS and said she wants to help promote as much awareness as she possibly can.
“Like an illness, bringing an awareness is key,” she said. “I’m just grateful for the opportunity.”
Gregory’s journey will take her through what is known as the TransAmerica route, a classic ride that offers everything expected from a transcontinental crossing. Bikers will experience all types of scenery and terrain including forest, deserts, high-mountain passes, extreme weather conditions to rolling hills and winding rivers.
The bike ride will start in Yorktown on June 1. Virginia, Gregory said, has more total elevation gain than any other state. She said from there she and her teammates will travel through the Midwest, into Kansas and then Colorado. As a team, the members will experience unique landscapes such as the Rocky Mountains and the “Loneliest Road in America” before they end their journey in San Francisco at the beginning of August.

Along the way, the team will be completing various service projects to assist individuals with MS, which Gregory said she’s looking forward to.
To participate in the ride, Gregory has to raise $1 per mile. As of Sunday, Gregory had raised $2,145 of her personal goal of $3,785.
“Giving back is something I’ve enjoyed doing,” she said. “This is just another example.”
“I’m completely baffled by how generous people have been in supporting my ride,” she said.
With no experience in biking, the 18 year old, who is the youngest on the team, is training for the adventure of a lifetime.
Generosity is something Gregory said she’s been given tenfold. Thanks in part to Blue Ridge Bicycles, which donated a Cannondale touring 2.0 bike, Gregory will be biking across the country in style.
Since agreeing to be a member of the team, Gregory “When they heard about what I was doing to raise an has been taking cycling, body pump and yoga classes to not only prepare her body but her mind for the journey. awareness for MS they reached out to me and told me they wanted to donate a bike.
