WWII veteran recalls the horrors of war walk when I left Guam because I was swelled up so bad. And, no cure. You’ve got it in your system and it stays there until you pass away.”

By Sally Voth news@nvdaily.com At 93, Berlin Allen has lived through the battles of Guadalcanal, Bougainville, and Guam, lost an eye and all his teeth, and suffered a serious parasitic infection.

He was in various hospitals for four years before being discharged from the Marines as a sergeant. Allen spent about 30 years working at a prison camp in Conicville, and later went to the Shenandoah County Sheriff’s Office. After retiring from the Sheriff’s Office, he spent 21 years working for customs, retiring last July.

Yet, he only retired from nearly eight decades of work last year. “It’s hard when you work all your life to just up and stop,” the Shenandoah County resident said. “It’s hard. I piddle around. I go to ballgames and things like that with my grandchildren.”

He lost his wife, Betty, three years ago. Allen might once again work as a security guard at the Shenandoah County Fair this summer, as he has done many times before.

The Mount Jackson native joined the U.S. Marine Corps less than five months before the attack on Pearl Harbor. “I signed up just as soon as we got out of school: July 20, ‘41,” Allen said.

“The only time I missed [attending the fair] was when I was in the service,” he said. “The first time I can remember was about 1928.”

He was 17, and was in Maryland with some friends.

Back then, admission was 5 cents for children and 10 cents for adults.

“I walked by this Marine recruiting station,” Allen recalled. “I said, ‘I’ll go in there and talk and see what they say.’ When I got out, I was in the Marine Corps.”

Allen doesn’t know any other living World War II veterans.

Argo, a dog with a passport, helps police By Sally Voth news@nvdaily.com STRASBURG - One of Strasburg Police Department’s newest recruits came all the way from Europe. Argo is a 2 1/2-year-old German shepherd. He’s assigned to K-9 Officer Eric Ramey, who has been with the department almost four years. Ramey was partnered with Argo in March 2016. “He actually has a passport,” Ramey said. “He came from Holland.” The two attended an eight-week training course at Professional Canine Services in Culpeper, and continue to train there once or twice a month. “[Argo] is narcotics detection,” Ramey said. “He also does tracking and article searches.” An article search involves anything with a fresh human scent on it, he said. Argo can sniff out marijuana, cocaine, ecstasy, crack, heroin, methamphetamine and opiate-based drugs.
