Aylor Middle FFA began the 2016-17 school with a week at the State FFA Leadership Camp in July at Graves Mountain Lodge. Nine FFA Officers attended the camp and interacted with 80 other members from across the state. They spent time with the State FFA Officers who shared their leadership skills with our members. The start of the school year in the fall brought all of our members together for a new year. Since the school year began, we have tie dyed FFA t-shirts, sponsored a Harvest Dinner for our FFA families, and made holiday centerpieces. We were visited by State FFA President Ashley Yanego and State FFA Reporter Isabell Leonard. We are looking forward to another State Officer visit in February.
Aylor has also placed first in the Agriscience Mechanics Contest in November and won the written devision of the FFA Quiz Bowl Contest as well. Members are looking forward to competing in several upcoming events to finish out the school year. FFA members will be participating in Food and Fiber, Plant Science, Public Speaking and Jr Stockmans. The knowledge gained from these events can be applied forward toward ag literacy and career skills. Aylor FFA was also the recipient of a $1700 grant from the National FFA Organization in January 2016. We used these funds to build ten raised beds. The beds were five feet wide and ten feet long. The raised beds were placed at Camp of Faith Church,
Abundant Life Day, Amercist Assisted Living and Sherando Horticulture Program. Over the summer, these raised beds provided free harvested food to each of these local groups. Tomatoes, squash, peppers, and cucumbers were among the food.

FFA provides students with a variety of opportunities. As a member, students can participate in career development events (CDEs), community service activities, state and national convention, and even apply for awards and scholarships. One of the most popular award programs is the Proficiency Award Program. Proficiency Awards are given to students with outstanding Supervised Agricultural Experiences (SAEs) which fall under one of 48 categories, in either entrepreneurship or placement. Students design a program to gain hands-on experience and develop skills in agricultural career areas that interest them. This program is the hands-on application of concepts and principles learned in the classroom.
