ABMS FFA has been recognized as a Superior FFA program for the last five years because of its active FFA chapter. They host a variety of activities to support leadership, community service, financial stability, healthy lifestyles and student development.

Emily Blanton wants to know if you “Got Milk?”

Along with an established Program of Activities, the ABMS members participate in many Career Development Events (CDE) such as agricultural mechanics, small animal care, plant science, horse, dairy, and livestock judging events. As the year progresses members will attend state sponsored leadership events, Massanutten Federation and school wide programs throughout the year. Each month members attend an FFA meeting with topics such as a family covered dish, team building, fundraising events, bowling, state officer guest speaker and end of year banquet recognition. Each month a student is recognized as student of the month.

Aylor FFA Chapter is celebrating FFA Week along with 7800 other chapters and over 600,000 members nationwide. Aylor has 83 FFA members who are in grades six through eight. Located in Stephens City, the chapter is in it 48th year and has had a great year of accomplishment for members and the chapter.

At the 89th Virginia State FFA Convention last June, Aylor FFA placed first in the state Food and Fiber, FFA Quiz Bowl and Agriscience Mechanics Career Development Events. Being a part of a Career Development Team teaches students about the industry of agriculture and how to be a consumer.

Aylor FFA also attended the State FFA Leadership Camp at Graves Mountain Lodge in July. Chapter officers participated in five days of leadership, fellowship and educational activities with over 100 other members from across the state. The week ended with an awards program with several Aylor students being recognized for their participation and commitment to the week.

Aylor FFA is currently a recipient of a Food For All Grant from the National FFA Organization. Funding for the grant will be used to build raised beds to be distributed into our local

community. The National FFA Organization is committed to developing programs that will provide food resources to local communities by teaching people how to grow and preserve food. FFA members and agriculture students will be responsible for constructing the beds, placing them in the community at various locations such as daycares, and teaching the recipients how to care for the bed. In return each site will be able to utilize the produce by either eating it or sending it home to families. This project is a year long commitment intended to be sustainable at each site that uses the raised bed to grow food.

Getting Away From It All Each year the officers from Stonewall Jackson FFA take two officer retreats. During the summer we go to Highland Retreat in Bergton, and in the winter we go to Brethren Woods in Rockingham County. At Highland, the focus is on getting to know each other and planning for the first semester. Several officers will be new to high school or to being an officer, and we hope that having fun together will build teamwork. We participate in the Highland Retreat ROPES Course, where a guide takes us through several challenges. Our favorite is a rope swing, where we each have to swing across onto a platform which is about two feet square. The first few people are pretty easy, but once you get twelve or so onto the platform and have six to go, things get pretty crowded. If anyone steps off, he has to start over. Other activities include a cable about one foot off the ground strung among the trees, where we have to figure out how to get the whole team from one end to the other. If anyone steps off, we all have to start over. These activities help us learn about each otherʼs strengths and weaknesses, and make us work together to achieve a common goal. At Brethren Woods, there is usually snow on the ground, so it is nice to stay in a cabin with a woodstove and bunk beds. After finalizing plans for FFA Week and the FFA banquet, we have a ping-pong tournament which Mr. Brill almost always wins. We also have a marathon Pictionary game, but we often forget to bring the cards, so Mr. Jarrett assigns words from the dictionary. It is amazing someone with no drawing ability can get her teammates to come up with the correct answers. Unless it is really, really cold, we take a short hike. Mr. Brill has a different idea of what short means. We also fix our own supper, usually spaghetti, and breakfast. We try not to stay up too late, because the advisors get grouchy after midnight. Getting out and having fun is part of growing up. Using that time to build friendships and accomplish big goals is most important on our officer retreats.
