Remediate mold today to prevent bigger issues By Sam Taff Daily correspondent

These types of small leaks don’t appear to be much at the surface but they are out of sight and out of mind for many homeowners and can lead to further problems. 4. Keep mulch from flower gardens below the window wells in your basement. Water can over flow here and leak in through the window. Basements usually get the most attention when you think of water damage. Homes without basements aren’t out of the woods, Whitson said. Water can penetrate the crawl space or the slab of any home. Whitson said it’s important to know “70 percent of all air in the home comes from the crawl space. Just because you don’t see it, mold can occur here.” Since that air then circulates through the home, he said, the mold is then spread throughout the home. Homes on slabs are not immune to water damage since most plumb-

There are no homes immune to water damage so what are the signs to look for? “Fungal appearances,” Whitson said. It is that fuzzy appearance under the sink. Homeowners try to wipe it up with towels, dry it with fans or clean it with bleach. All of these cures are superficial. Whitson said to find the source of the water first and get it fixed or replaced. “Eight out of 10 homes have a sink trap that is leaking and that leads to mold,” he said. Eventually that mold releases toxic gas. “People are poisoning themselves if they wait to get this fixed,” Whitson said. Using fans to dry the water “migrates the mold through the home and they eventually get a continued on 4

Organic weed control using corn Weeds are a problem faced by everyone who enjoys gardening.
Not only can it suppress weeds, but it will also help feed your garden plants since it is also a source of nitrogen. And corn gluten won’t harm pets, people, birds or insects, making it very safe to use.
When we carefully prepare the soil to make a good home for our garden plants, we’re also creating ideal conditions for weeds to thrive.
Corn gluten works by preventing germinated seeds from growing a root. A plant that has already grown roots will not be affected by corn gluten.
Weeds not only detract from the beauty of our gardens, but they also compete for the water and nutrition that is meant to be used by the more desirable plants.
For the best results, the corn gluten should be applied early in the season, before the weed seeds germinate and grow roots. As a preemergent herbicide, corn gluten tends to have a cumulative effect and becomes even more effective on weed seeds with repeated applications over time.
By Kathy Anderson
So what’s a gardener to do about weeds? We can smother existing weeds when creating new planting beds, but despite our best efforts, weed seeds will always be blowing into the beds. When those weed seeds germinate and grow, the weeds will once again make themselves right at home in the garden. Now there’s a natural product available that helps prevent weed seeds from growing in the garden, and surprisingly, it is made from corn. Corn gluten is a byproduct of the wet-milling process and has traditionally been used in cattle and poultry feed and also as an ingredient in dog food. It was discovered entirely by accident that corn gluten can also be used to prevent weed seeds from germinating.
One application of corn gluten continues to suppress weeds for 46 weeks, a bit less if the weather is unusually rainy or hot. Corn gluten is typically applied by broadcasting it on the growing bed at a rate of 20-40 pounds per 1000 square feet. It may then be lightly raked into just the surface of the soil and watered in. Corn gluten will not be effective unless it is wetted and should be given a gentle shower after being applied. However, if there is a long rainy period after the corn gluten has been applied, it may lose its effectiveness. As with any herbicide, it can wash
away, and weed seedlings may even recover and begin again to form roots if the soil surface remains wet for an extended time. Keep an eye on the weather and apply the corn gluten when no rain is expected for a few days. Always follow the instructions on the package when applying any herbicide or fertilizer.
Corn gluten is sold under several brand names. Look for corn gluten herbicides at your local garden center or in the organic section of gardening catalogs.
Corn gluten will not harm mature plants and can be safely used in an existing flowerbed, vegetable garden or potted plants.
With a good dose of corn gluten on the garden, you can enjoy the garden more and spend less time pulling weeds.
Vegetable or flower seeds that are planted deeply, such as peas, corn or beans, won’t be affected by the corn gluten.
Kathy Anderson has been an avid gardener for many years and has But avoid using corn gluten where grown tomatoes by the acre, along shallow-seeded plants such as let- with many other vegetables, flowtuce or carrots will be grown. ers and landscape plants. Update your home security. Ensure all exterior doors have deadbolt locks. Lock all windows and connect them to your home alarm system. Shut and lock gates and garages to reduce hiding places. And keep ladders in a locked garage or shed. Get to know the police. Make an effort to meet your neighborhood officers. Report questionable behavior or activity in your area. Pest control the organic way By Tresa Erickson
ly active pests. They are a temporary fix, as many plants require insect pollination.
Gardens are a prime target for pests of all kinds—beetles, caterpillars, ladybugs, maggots, worms and more. Keeping a garden pest free can be difficult, but it is not impossible. There are many methods for controlling garden pests, some more natural than others. If you prefer more organic methods of pest control, read on.
Sticky traps are another method for keeping pests in check. You can purchase them or make them yourself. Just make sure the color of trap you use appeals to the pests you are after. Yellow, for example, attracts fruit flies, fungus gnats, male-winged mealy bugs and other pests. White attracts cucumber and flea beetles. Light blue attracts flower thrips, and red, flies that turn into apple maggots. The traps will lure insects through the color and trap them with a sticky coating.
If covers and traps are too much of a hassle, consider using sprays. Insecticidal soap is a popular product that will eliminate any One of the best ways to keep pests out of plants and let the light and water in is to use insects it comes into contact with. It can burn some plants, however, so a spot test is recomfloating row covers. Made of porous polymended prior to use. Oil sprays are also ester fabric, the covers can be applied in effective. As with insecticidal soaps, a spot numerous ways—draped over hoops, attached to frames, wrapped around cages or test is recommended. Should you have a specific insect problem, bacillus thuringiensis secured with pins over plants. Floating row covers come in lightweight and heavyweight (BT) is an option. Make sure the product you versions and work best on seedlings and real- select applies to the pests you are targeting.

WHETHER IT’S A DREAM YARD, AN AMAZING PATIO SPACE OR A PRODUCING GARDEN,
JUST REMEMBER ONE THING, HOW MANY TIMES A YEAR DO YOU USE ONE OF THESE?
RENT IT.
Don’t invest big money in something you only use once or twice a year, and have to maintain year round.

Parasitic nematodes are another organic solution to pests. These occur naturally in the soil but can be purchased by the billions and applied with water to eliminate pests. For small infestations, you can forgo covers, traps and sprays in favor of plain, old-fashioned hand-picking. That’s right. You pluck the pests from the plants by hand and dispose of them properly. Just make sure you wear gloves and can handle the task at hand. Not all gardeners are keen on removing pests by hand. These are just a few organic options for keeping pests under control. There are others. Consult with the experts at your local garden center or nursery. Ask around, and remember, what works for one gardener may not work for another. Keep trying until you come up with the right combination of methods for you.
