River offers comfortable travel in fall

The typical view of the Shenandoah Valley’s autumn colors comes with altitude. Up the Blue Ridge mountainsides visitors look for a long vista over the treetops. Skyline Drive clogs with drivers headed for scenic overlooks; the normally serene two-lane roads between isolated mountain hamlets choke with automobiles. But there is one route that is actually less traveled in fall: the river. With the summer’s water sports finished for the year, outfitters on the Shenandoah River still have canoe, kayak and tube trips that offer seasonal views in peace and solitude.

Unlike in August, when the river may be low for lack of rain, water levels in autumn are usually robust. Because it’s tropical storm season, coastal hurricanes dump moisture that replenishes the river. I

n making her documentary, “Talking Story,” Marie-Rose Phan-Le aimed to combine her experience as a filmmaker with the apprenticeship she undertook to learn the traditional healing methods of her native Vietnam. As she worked, the project grew. It took Phan-Le 11 years to piece together the stories of healers around the world, who gave her information that she terms “gifts.”

Shenandoah Valley offering unique entertainment opportunities to enjoy this fall, like film premieres, concerts and children’s stage theater.
