Letter from the Chairman

Welcome to the 51st season of the Shenandoah Valley Music Festival!

Our Sponsors .......................................3

Last year, our Golden Anniversary, proved to be a fantastic season. Concert programming, artistic performances, ticket sales, sponsorships, and the cooperation of the weather contributed to memorable evenings beneath the stars.

Board of Directors...............................5

Our concert venue here at Shrine Mont has been well-known for many years as a peaceful, restorative location where the road leads no further. Bringing great music experiences to this beautiful setting has been the mission of the Shenandoah Valley Music Festival for over five decades.

SVMF Music Guild ...............................5 July 18, Straight No Chaser ................7 July 19, Rosanne Cash and John Leventhal..............................9 July 25, The Fairfax Symphony.........11 July 26, The Fairfax Symphony.........13

Last year, we told you about our Future Fifty Fund—our campaign to ensure our future by asking folks like you to invest in great music. We learned a very important lesson during that time. We learned we have lots of friends. The good news is that we made it— for another year.

Meet the Artists ................................15

Over the next several years we want to make our programming at the Shenandoah Valley Music Festival stronger, promote our concerts to a larger audience, improve our music education and family programs and build stronger partnerships with other arts and non-arts groups. These are attainable goals—but they cost money.

The Music of ABBA .....................19

July 27, U.S. Air Force Strings ...........17 August 1, Arrival From Sweden— August 2, Hot Strings Cool Breezes Bluegrass Mini-Fest .....................21 August 30, Oak Ridge Boys ..............21

The challenge this year has been in planning another superb season with the desires of the audience in mind and keeping within budget limitations. The truth is no performing arts organization can survive on ticket sales alone, especially one that is at the mercy of the weather. It takes a strong, loyal corps of people who believe in what we are and what we do.

August 31, Eddie From Ohio ............25

We are working with other arts organizations within the Shenandoah Valley not only to promote our organization but also to promote other artists through the O Shenandoah County Artisan Trail. We are a place where music comes alive, a place to have fun in a unique setting and to enjoy the beauty of music under the stars and moon.

Gifts to the Festival...........................31

SVMF Volunteers...............................27 Fishburn Awards ...............................29 Special Acknowledgements .............29 Giving Opportunities ........................39

The continued presence of the Shenandoah Valley Music Festival is determined by individual contributions, ticket sales, and sponsorships. Meeting the goal of the Future Fifty Fund campaign continues so that we can provide quality music our audiences will continue to enjoy. You can make a difference as an individual donor toward the continuing goal of great music each summer in Orkney Springs. Thank you. Enjoy.

Straight No Chaser

If the phrase “male a cappella group” conjures up an image of students in blue blazers, ties and khakis singing traditional college songs on ivied campuses… think again. Straight No Chaser are neither strait-laced nor straightfaced, but neither are they vaudeville-style kitsch. As original member Randy Stine comments, “We take the music very seriously; we just don’t take ourselves too seriously.” In the process, they are

reinventing the idea of a cappella on the modern pop landscape.

“Straight No Chaser is the real deal.”

In an era when so much pop music is the product of digital processing and vocal pro-tooling, Straight No Chaser is the real deal - the captivating sound of ten unadulterated human voices coming together to make extraordinary music that is moving people in a fundamental sense… and with a sense of humor.

Rosanne Cash with John Leventhal Singer and songwriter Rosanne Cash and John Leventhal’s new show celebrates the release of her much anticipated new album, “The River and the Thread.” Released in January by Blue Note Records, the album is a collection of new original songs that connect and re-connect her to the American South, the place of her birth and the home of her ancestors. Rosanne follows her acclaimed Grammy nominated and award winning album “The List,” with her own poetic survey of places and people of the South on these beautiful and varied songs. As one of the most compelling figures in popular music with a body of work encompassing country, rock, roots and pop influences, Rosanne Cash inherited a reverence for song and profound artistry – and an equal duty to find insights of her own. The oldest daughter of country music icon Johnny Cash and stepdaughter of June Carter Cash of the legendary Carter Family, she holds a lineage rooted in the very beginning of American country music, with its deep cultural and historical connections to the South. Over a three-decade career she has responded to this heritage with 15 albums of extraordinary songs that have earned a Grammy Award and nominations for 12 more, the Americana Honors and Awards'

Shenandoah Valley Music Festival 2014

Album of the Year prize, and 21 top40 hits, including 11 No. 1 singles. Her four books include the bestselling memoir "Composed." In recent seasons, Cash has appeared in concerts and talks at the Spoleto Festival, Toronto's Luminato festival and the Festival of Arts and Ideas, and partnered in programming collaborations with the Minnesota Orchestra, Lincoln Center and San Francisco Jazz. Written with her longtime collaborator, producer, guitarist and husband John Leventhal, “The River

and the Thread” reflects journeys through the Southern states, with stops at William Faulkner's house; Dockery Farms, the plantation where Howlin' Wolf and Charley Patton worked and sang; her father's boyhood home in Dyess, Arkansas; the Sun Records Studio in Memphis; and the Mississippi Delta, with its memories of the birth of the Civil Rights era and the haunting gravesite of the great bluesman Robert Johnson.

Arrival From Sweden – The Music of ABBA How time flies! It seems like just yesterday that “Dancing Queen” ruled the airwaves, but 2014 marks the 40th anniversary of the European supergroup ABBA. The band broke up in the 1980s, and Arrival From Sweden became one of the world's most popular and most selling ABBA show band soon after their inception in 1995. The show band has toured more than 50 nations and appeared in several TV and radio shows all over the world. In less than 10 years, Arrival has performed in 30 sold out tours in North America alone. Arrival From Sweden is the only group that has ever received an unreleased song directly from ABBA. Entitled “Just A Notion,” it is scheduled for worldwide release this year. Arrival is also the only group with the exclusive right to copy ABBA's original outfits and permission to use the trademark ABBA in their production name “Abbasolutely.” Working to maintain the integrity of their tribute to one of the most popular

groups of the ‘70s, the band has designed a production which is the closest you ever will get to seeing ABBA! “A gorgeous summer night Sunday night saw a sell-out crowd at the Sun Valley Pavilion, all there to dance, tap their feet and sing along to the music of ABBA as performed by Arrival. Arrival did not disappoint, playing all of the legendary group’s biggest hits well into the night. It was a time warp of the most entertaining kind — they looked like ABBA, they sounded like ABBA, they dressed like ABBA, for all intents and purposes, they were ABBA.”

Rhonda Vincent Crowned the Queen of Bluegrass Music by the “Wall Street Journal,” Rhonda Vincent and her band, The Rage, is the most awarded band in bluegrass music. A five-time Grammy nominee, Ms. Vincent's musical career began when she was a child in her family's band The Sally Mountain Show, and has spanned more than four decades. Ms. Vincent first achieved success in the bluegrass genre in the 1970s and '80s, earning the respect of her mostly male peers for her mastery of the progressive chord structures and multi-range, fast paced vocals intrinsic to bluegrass music. Ms. Vincent is an in-demand guest vocalist for other bluegrass and country music.

boundaries. With more 80 awards to their credit, Rhonda Vincent and The Rage have emerged as the most decorated band in bluegrass. Among their honors are Song of the Year, Entertainer of the Year, and an unrivaled seven consecutive Female Vocalist of the Year awards from the International Bluegrass Music Association. Outside of the realm of bluegrass, she has been featured in People Magazine and Oprah's “O” Magazine, has made appearances with such notables as Dolly Parton and Norah Jones, and has been shouted praise from high profile fans such as Bernie Taupin and Levon Helm. Composed of an incredible band of talented musicians, Rhonda Vincent and The Rage shows off traditional vocals backed by mandolin, banjo, fiddle, dobro and bass for a performance to captivate audiences in a night of bluegrass excitement.

Dunlap has been collecting his band mates for the last 8 years. His brother Jack Dunlap began playing the mandolin when he was 12, and his passion that inspires remarkable leads drew him into the lineup. Cody Brown, who first joined forces with Buddy in 2005, plays bass with a unique style influenced by his love of rock and 90's country in addition to artists including Barry Bales, Mark Shatz and Byron House. Gaven Largent, a rising star in the bluegrass world, commands the dobro with the skills of a virtuoso in a way only few can. Gina Clowes rounds out the group with a special banjo talent—her right hand like a cannonball, and her left with an incredible knowledge of the banjo fingerboard. The band, which calls Wardensville, West Virginia home, plays a tasteful mix of Buddy's original material, as well as traditional and not so traditional favorites.

The Oak Ridge Boys Theirs is one of the most distinctive and recognizable sounds in the music industry. The four-part harmonies and upbeat songs of The Oak Ridge Boys have spawned dozens of country hits and a number one pop smash, earned them Grammy, Dove, CMA, and ACM awards and garnered a host of other industry and fan accolades. Every time they step before an audience, the Oaks bring four decades of charted singles, and 50 years of tradition, to a stage show widely acknowledged as among the most exciting anywhere – and each remains as enthusiastic about the process as they have ever been. “When I go on stage, I get the same feeling I had the first time I sang with The Oak Ridge Boys,” says lead singer Duane Allen. “This is the only job I've ever wanted to have.” “Like everyone else in the group,” adds bass singer extraordinaire, Richard Sterban, “I was a fan of the Oaks before I became a member. I’m still a fan of the group today. Being in The Oak Ridge Boys is the fulfillment of a lifelong dream.” The two, along with tenor Joe Bonsall and baritone William Lee Golden, comprise one of country's truly legendary acts. The Shenandoah Valley Music Festival Presents

Eddie From Ohio

Too energetic to be labeled just "folk” and not angry enough to be pegged "alternative," Eddie from Ohio continues to defy description with its unique blend of vocals and acoustic instrumentation. A bedrock foundation of hand and stick percussion and a textural flavoring of guitar/bass/harmonica support the four-part harmonies and lyrically-driven original music. While this combination has drawn comparisons like the Grateful Dead meets Peter, Paul and Mary, or like Jewel fronts the Bare Naked Ladies, EFO fuses a multitude of musical influences to create their own trademark sound. “Performing Songwriter” writes, "The manic strumminess recalls Ani DiFranco or Dave Matthews, but there's also a deep undercurrent of high, lonesome mountain harmony that should appeal to fans of Alison Krauss and Union Station." With this trademark sound, EFO has produced nine CDs independently (selling upwards of 150,000 copies to

Shenandoah Valley Music Festival 2014

date,) toured from Florida to the state of Washington, received air play from hundreds of radio stations worldwide, been invited to play the main stage at prestigious festivals like Philadelphia Folk, Falcon Ridge Folk Festival, Telluride Bluegrass Festival, Strawberry Music Festival in California and, for the third time, the Shenandoah Valley Music Festival. They have appeared on the syndicated radio programs Mountain Stage, West Coast Live and World Cafe, and were awarded "Best Contemporary Folk Group" by the Washington Area Music Association six times since 1997. Not bad for a Virginia-based band that began in 1991 playing covers in neighborhood bars when three James Madison University graduates (Robbie Schaefer, Eddie Hartness and Michael Clem) teamed up with Virginia Tech alumnae Julie Murphy (now Murphy Wells.) After a popular seven year Tuesday night residency at Bad Habits Grille in Arlington, EFO graduated from town taverns

to renowned listening rooms and concert series throughout the country, where their tight harmonies and humorous lyrics, set against an eclectic array of musical forms, can be featured to best advantage. The band continues to perform but on a more limited basis since September, 2005 when Ms.Wells was diagnosed with breast cancer. Fortunately, after an intense year of chemotherapy, she is in good health and remains active in cancer cure fundraising. In 2006, bassist/guitarist Clem released his first solo CD, produced by Hartness, and guitarist Schaefer has found a calling in children's music, having produced a successful CD and hosting a nightly satellite radio show on XMKids, and releasing a solo CD in December 2008, “Strange & Lovely World.” Percussionist Hartness continues to keep the beat for a number of local acts and stays active in the world of audio engineering.

Marv Ashby and High Octane

In February of 2012, the band released its first studio album. The record has five amazing original pieces that perfectly describe the talents of the group. This band will put on a performance that will surely be talked about for years to come.

From the West Virginia Panhandle comes that hard-driving “no holds barred” bluegrass music. Marv is joined by some the region’s finest entertainers delivering a quality and fast moving show. “Beardie” powers the low end with percussive doghouse bass and enhances the show with unique tunes featuring traditional bluegrass vocal styling.

Robbie Benzing rolls through the tunes with spot-on First Generation bluegrass drive and enthusiasm. Alby 'Bugsy' Lopez delivers down-home bluegrass punch from his edgy mandolin prowess and straight-up vocal offerings. This incredibly wellrounded assortment of talented people allows the band to showcase both traditional and contemporary bluegrass.
