here is only one place in Shenandoah County that addresses sexual abuse and domestic violence. Response Inc., Shenandoah County’s primary resource combating domestic violence and sexual abuse, wants a different response to whether cultural attitudes have changed toward these crimes.
“
We want kids or adults who are dating to be comfortable talking about sex and consent. If they canʼt talk about consent, they are probably not ready for sex. Jennifer Morrison, Executive Director of Response Inc.

are not going down,” said Morrison. That hasn’t deterred the organization or those who volunteer to help. “It is the only source there is in the county for sexual assault and domestic violence,” said Peggy Boston, a volunteer Response board member for more than 10 years. “It is a pretty somber organization and that makes it a little harder to get the word out. We want people to know we do more than just house people.” Response provides companions to victims being examined due to sexual assault, employment and financial
counseling, parental education and court advocacy, and sponsors various support groups. A school outreach program provides educational presentations on domestic violence, sexual assault and teen dating in middle and high schools. A Teen Advisory Board is sponsored and a nationally accredited Child Assault Prevention Project addresses second grade students in Shenandoah County schools, teaching assault prevention skills to children, their parents and teachers. “They put a lot of energy into these programs,” said Boston. “They spent years getting into the schools and now teens help with fundraisers. Prevention is the best direction to go.” Such issues resonate in the public arena these days with the discredited story of gang rape at the University of Virginia and the popularity of the graphic sexual domination-themed book and movie “Fifty Shades of Grey.” SEE RESPONSE, PAGE A6

County fairgrounds adds more events to year’s lineup By Tom Crosby

APRIL 2015
Ribbons 4 Kids April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month, and in recognition of its importance, Response will host a ribbon decorating contest during the month of April. The Ribbons 4 Kids contest will run from April 1, 2015 through April 30, 2015. A panel of judges will choose one grand prize winner from each age group. Winners will be contacted in early May.
RESPONSE FROM PAGE A1 “We want kids or adults who are dating to be comfortable talking about sex and consent,” said Morrison. “If they can’t talk about consent, they are probably not ready for sex.” Response has had T-shirts made saying “Let’s talk about sex,” to educate people “to know they can talk about it in a healthy and respectful way,” said Morrison.
Eligibility: Participants must be Pre-K through middle school aged children in Shenandoah County. Contest groups are: Preschool 2-5 years, Elementary 6-10 years; Middle 11-13 years.
“They really are passionate about breaking the cycle (of sexual abuse and domestic violence),” said Joan Anderson, who has been a Response board member since 2005. The 12member board includes eight women and four men, including law enforcement officials.
Entering the Contest: Participants can enter by decorating the ribbon using whatever coloring items they wish (crayons, markers, colored pencils, etc.) to symbolize Child Abuse Prevention Month.
“It’s a doer group,” she said. “It’s more self-satisfying than other boards and when you read about a man who has killed his wife and kids and then himself in the paper, it renews my passion (for Response). If we can prevent that for just one family….” Response owns a three-story house where single women or mothers and children can find live-in sanctuary and empathetic counseling on selfesteem and empowerment without judgment. If a man seeks help — roughly 10 percent of victims are men — he is housed elsewhere while receiving aid. “We conduct a holistic approach to how to be the kind of person you want to be,” said Morrison. “Every person we talk to matters to us.”
FACTS ABOUT SEXUAL ABUSE AND DOMESTIC VIOLENCE • Nearly 70 percent of all reported sexual assaults occur against children 17 years of age or younger. • Three out of four adolescents who have been sexually assaulted were victimized by someone they knew well. • 73 percent of child victims do not tell anyone about the abuse for at least a year (often scared to do so or ashamed). • 45 percent of victims do not tell anyone for at least 5 years. • 60 percent of assaults occur in the home of either the victim or the assailant. • Only about 2 percent of all rape and related sex charges are determined to be false - the same as other felonies. False claims of auto theft are reported more frequently than those of rape. • Nearly 7,000 adults and children are sheltered by a domestic violence and/or sexual assault program each year in Virginia. Gardens, Galleries & Grapes An O Shenandoah County Artisan Trail Event S
henandoah County Tourism and the Artisans Center of Virginia will host their 3rd annual O Shenandoah County Artisan Trail Event, Gardens, Galleries & Grapes April 25-26, 2015. This free event includes 24 sites from throughout the entire county and features over 60 artists, craftsmen, farmers, and local entrepreneurs. Visitors can enjoy studio tours, artist demonstrations, local wine & beer tastings, local foods, live music, farm tours, gardening demonstrations and plenty of locally produced goods available. Just in time for spring, Gardens, Galleries & Grapes highlights the talented individuals and fresh agricultural products that make Shenandoah County so unique. “Visitors can view artwork at a gallery any day but what makes this event so special is that people rarely get the opportunity to see where the creativity happens or engage with local producers about the process of creating a piece of art, growing fresh produce or crafting fresh foods and beverages. Gardens, Galleries & Grapes is all about creating an engaging, hands-on experience for people,” explains Shenandoah County Director of Tourism & Marketing, Jenna French. “You can meet people who are dedicated to making, growing, and creating things says Liz Hollingsworth of Earth Spirits Masks. Hollingsworth is just one of many artists who will demonstrate how she creates her art during the event. Attendees are encouraged to design their own tour of participating sites based on their individual interests. “We are literally opening our doors, says local potter Kary Haun. Her studio stands in a historic cabin beside one of the older homes in Woodstock. “It’s an ‘open house.’ I’ve invited a couple of other local artists to partner with me and display some of their items in my studio.” Gardens, Galleries & Grapes will lead visitors to more than just art venues though. Visitors will also experience the rich agricultural foundation of Shenandoah County including visits to local farms such as Posey Thisisit Llama Farm in Toms Brook. “You don’t just stand by the gate here,” says Joyce Hall, owner of Posey Thisisit. “We do a ‘llama 101,’ what it’s like to live with llamas and the fun you can have with them.” Hall is partnering with several Shenandoah entities including a local vineyard, garden shop, and potter and will be offering yarn spinning demonstrations and even a take home craft for visitors. Many other locations such as the Shenandoah Valley Heritage Museum at the Edinburg Mill and Chickadees feature several artists, craftsmen and activities in addition to their own offerings. For a complete list of sites and activities, visit www.ShenandoahTravel.org or www.shenandoahcountyva.us/tourism/ events/ggg/

How to find more time for family
For those parents whose efforts to achieve better work-life balances remain works in progress, the following are a few ways to free up more time for those people who matter the most to you.
· Stop working. Once you leave the office for the day, resist the temptation to pick up your smartphone and check your email or listen to your voicemail messages. Smartphones have made it easier than ever before to stay connected to the office. But many working professionals feel this convenience has a significant downside, making them feel as if they are working roundthe-clock, even during moments that were initially earmarked as family time. Working parents who want to make the most of the time they have with their children should ignore their smartphones during dinner or the time they spend hanging out with their kids or helping them do their homework. You can always sneak a peek at your emails when the kids go to bed.
· Shake things up. If your list of responsibilities is truly taking time away from your family, don’t be afraid to shake up your routine. For example, instead of cooking dinner alone, involve the kids so you can get some extra time in with them. If you like to go on a nightly jog around the neighborhood, let the kids accompany you on their bicycles so you can still get your exercise without having to sacrifice time spent with your children.
· Propose changes at work. Work is one of the biggest consumers of parents’ time. Parents who feel their work schedules are inefficient or in need of some change should try to think of ways to approach those inefficiencies so they aren’t having such adverse effects on family time. Business travel was once a reality of life for many working professionals, but nowadays technology, such as video conference calls, can let working moms and dads stay closer to home without sacrificing their productivity. Before bringing any issues to your boss, think of realistic ways to institute change so
Weeknight activities the whole family can enjoy any families have their own routines on weeknights. Kids may tackle their homework before dinner, and once everyone’s plate is clean, family members may spend time together or go their separate ways, spending time online with friends or watching their favorite television programs on the couch.

Parents who feel their weeknights don’t include enough family time are often on the hunt for more family-friendly activities the whole family can enjoy even if everyone has to go to work or school the next day. The following are a handful of family-friendly weeknight activities that can bring families closer together. · Movie night: Family movie night is a tradition for many families, and parents who want to spend more time together as families may find that movie night is a great way to share a few laughs or even facilitate discussions about important topics broached in certain films. Each week let a different family member pick that week’s movie and ask him or her to explain his or her choice and why they think it’s a film the whole family will enjoy. Let the kids join you as you get the popcorn ready or make special treats to enjoy while the movie is playing.
· Writing activities: Another way families can escape their devices and resist the temptation of social media on weeknights is to get together for weekly writing sessions. Ask each family member to create brief lists on a range of topics, whether it’s a list of favorite books or countries each person wants to visit or a bucket list of things each family member wants to do at one point in their lives. Allow about 15 · Family walk: Walking is a great way for minutes for each person to write his or her parents to instill a love of physical activity lists, and then discuss each person’s list, including the inspiration behind each item in their children, and nightly walks also that made it onto the lists. make great opportunities for families to leave their devices behind and discuss the · Game night: Classic board games or goings-on in their lives. Weather permitgames like checkers might not be as poputing, take a family walk after dinner each lar today as they were prior to the advent night, which can help make your family of the Internet, but that does not mean a healthier and strengthen the bonds night centered around such games does between family members. not still make for a very family-friendly you and your coworkers can get more time with your families without falling short of company goals. · Move closer to the office. Though this might be a drastic change, moving closer to the office might free up more time for parents to spend with their families than any other potential change they can make. According to data from the United States Census Bureau, more than 8 percent of workers have a commute to work of 60 minutes or more. The Census Bureau’s 2013

American Community Survey also found that nearly 24 percent of workers worked outside their county of residence, which no doubt contributed to the nearly 26-minute average commute time to work. Parents who
evening. Stock up on some classic board games and share the responsibility of choosing which game to play each week. Board games can take up to a few hours to play, and that’s a great opportunity for families to share some laughs without being interrupted by their devices. · Crafts night: Arts and crafts night is another great way for families to spend time together. Parents can choose ageappropriate projects that can help kids and adults alike tap into their creative sides. Solicit ideas when planning crafts night so everyone feels like they played their part. Nights together as a family do not need to be limited to weekends. Parents willing to get a little creative can enjoy familyfriendly evenings no matter what day it happens to be. feel their commutes are greatly diminishing the time they get to spend with their families may want to consider moving closer to their offices so they spend less time sitting in traffic and more time with their families.
