Rich Cooley/Daily Shenandoah County's Community School Breakfast program, which includes a list of generous residents and businesses, has been making sure needy schoolchildren have breakfast before starting their school day.

Community, businesses join forces to ensure students get a morning meal By Sally Voth A generous group of Shenandoah County residents and business people is hungry to help kids in need. Theyʼre ensuring all students in Shenandoah County Public Schools are able to get breakfast, regardless of their ability to pay. The Community School Breakfast Program has been providing free breakfasts to county schoolchildren since the 2009-2010 school year. Founder Fred Hepner Jr. said the idea came after a woman he attended church with told him an unfortunate story from one of the school cafeterias. “This lady that worked at [a] school was telling me about the children not getting breakfast,” he said. “They were getting off the bus and they were hungry, and [she] talked about this one little boy who was hungry and he went through the line twice.” The student didnʼt have any money to pay

and wasnʼt signed up for the free and reduced lunch program, Hepner said. “They dumped his tray twice,” he said. “I didnʼt believe that they could do that. But come to find out, because of regulations and as strict as they were, thatʼs what they had to do.” Hepner decided to see if funds could be raised to cover the cost of breakfast for those children whose parents maybe couldnʼt afford to pay for breakfast, but didnʼt qualify for the free and reduced program, or werenʼt comfortable signing up for it. The Community School Breakfast Program will also pay for anyone who may have forgotten their money on a particular day. “The cafeteria knows that if a child doesnʼt have money or is not on the free and reduced list, then they take it out of this fund,” he said. No one has to sign up to be covered by

the funds, Hepner said. “The good Lord had His hands in it,” he said. “Everything just fell into place so quick. The business people and the people in the community had no idea this was going on, [that] there were kids in Shenandoah County that were that hungry. “It took me about half a day to get the funding to get that thing started. Iʼve had to take some money out of my pocket to do it some, but itʼs not been bad. People have blessed it. To date, weʼve served over 50,000 breakfasts.” The first year, $7,200 was raised, and 5,750 breakfasts were paid for. In the 2015-2016 school year, $11,709 was raised, and 9,367 breakfasts were served with that money. The program was originally just in the elementary schools, but is now available in all of the schools in the Shenandoah County

Realtors: It’s a great time to sell your home By Winthrop Rodgers

The real estate market is hot in the Shenandoah Valley right now and is likely to stay strong for sellers through the summer, according to local real estate agents. “The spring market has sprung and we’re here,” says Wanda Himes, of Weichert Realtors in Front Royal.

In previous years, most properties were purchased by people from outside the valley, but, according to Rutz, the ratio of local to non-local is now closer to half and half, which she said she sees as a positive trend.

stores, restaurants, and offices. Furthermore, the market for land has heated up in recent months, as long as it is priced right, according to Crider. “There is a lot of land out there that is for sale,” she says. “But it is probably priced too high when combined with the cost of getting a loan for actual construction.” All of the agents who were contacted said they believed that these trends would continue through the summer. “Things are really encouraging,” said Rutz Holler noted, “The market is likely to really take off after tax time.”

Asked what brings people to the area and makes this market different, French responded, “It stands out

for its beauty. It’s close to Northern Virginia and D.C., but people like it for its quietness.”

Getting the best price for your home includes landscaping for curb appeal By Michael J. McGroarty

Maybe you’ve already sold a home or two. People tend to move more often than our parents did. There are a lot of things that go into getting the best possible price for your home, but the very first thing your home needs is curb appeal. When a prospective buyer, or a realtor for that matter, pulls up in front of your home, they immediately form an opinion about your house. Fair or not, that’s what people do.

curb appeal, the most important thing you need to do is to raise the beds with topsoil. Of course you have to do this before you plant.

You can have the most beautiful home in the city, but if prospective buyers don’t get a super positive feeling about your house the minute they lay eyes on it, they are going to enter and view the rest of your house with a negative impression.

Plants do much better in raised beds, and the plants in the beds really stand out. In order to raise the beds around your house you do not have to buy expensive stones and build retaining walls.

There are lots of landscaping photos on my website that will give you a lot of good ideas.

The other thing you definitely do not need is weed control fabric. The stuff just doesn’t work. The weeds grow right on top of the fabric, then root through the fabric making it even harder to keep your beds weed free. When landscaping for curb appeal, plant placement and selection is very important. In a corner bed you need a centerpiece. I like Canadian Hemlock because they are evergreen and provide an excellent background for more colorful plants. In front of the Hemlock you can use a bright colored evergreen like Gold Thread Cypress, but don’t use too many.

Wildflower Oasis By Tresa Erickson

Have you ever caught sight of a patch of wildflowers growing along the side of a road? Lovely, wasn’t it? Have you thought about creating your own wildflower patch? Wildflower gardens are like any other garden. They take time to plant and cultivate into the mass of loveliness spotted roadside, but once they take off, you will have a lovely garden for years to come. While wildflowers are hardy and tend to grow without assistance, they do take some work to start. It is not enough to drop some seeds onto the ground like Mother Nature does roadside. You need a site with partial to full sun, and you need to prep the site accordingly. So, grab your garden tools and prepare to clear the area.

How you go about clearing the site will depend on the size of it. If it is a small area, you may be able to dig out the weeds by hand. If it is a rather large area, you may want to mow it and cover it with plastic for a couple of months to smother the weeds or apply an herbicide to kill the weeds more quickly. When the

With regular watering, the seeds should germinate in 10 to 21 days and bloom in five to six weeks. To help fill in the garden and keep weeds at bay, you may want to plant some grasses. Hardy fescues, such as Kentucky 31 tall

fescue grass, work well in wildflower gardens. In the beginning, you will need to weed and water your wildflower garden regularly, reseed it periodically and mow it down each fall. Once the flowers get established, there will be very little maintenance to keep your oasis intact. Add some benches, weed now and then, and enjoy!

SAAA to move county center to Woodstock By Alex Bridges WOODSTOCK – A regional agency that helps senior citizens plans to move its center from Edinburg to a church in town. The Board of Supervisors recently voted to allow the Shenandoah Area Agency on Aging to break its lease with the county and move out of its space in the Charterhouse School in Edinburg by April 30 – about nine months before the agreement expires. The agency plans to offer its services at the First Baptist Church of Woodstock, 1167 Lakeview Drive. The move will take place over the next month, Executive Director Catherine Galvin said recently.

“By May 1 weʼll be fully operational in our new location,” Galvin said.

She explained the reason for the decision to move.

“Although well-intended, the building is not that accessible for older adults … and they had to walk a very long way to get to the restroom,” Galvin said. “There were issues with the Charterhouse about the parking. “We were restricted to an area, because of their school buses and everything, where it was not helpful for older adults and it was hard for them and so we were looking for a space that was more accessible for older adults,” she added.

Some of the agencyʼs clients became frail as they aged and had a harder time with the accommodations, she said. The

Meals on Wheels served 15,176 meals to 113 people in Shenandoah County in fiscal 2016, and 6,356 meals to 51 people in Warren County during the same period. According to Meals on Wheels Americaʼs website, http://www.mealsonwheelsamerica.org, Meals on Wheels receives 35 percent of its funding from the federal government. The website states that Trumpʼs proposed budget also calls for the elimination of the Community Block Grant and Community Development Block Grant, which some Meals on Wheels programs rely upon. The SAAA served 83 people and prepared 2,816 meals at the center in Edinburg last year, she said. The agencyʼs early departure from its lease means a loss in revenue, County Administrator Mary T. Price explained. The county budgeted $400 per month through January 2018 under terms of the rent agreed upon in the lease. The county can expect to lose $1,200 in rent. However, Charterhouseʼs rent also increased this year. The Charterhouse School lease already allows the use of the SAAA space, Price said. The lease with the school also includes language that beginning with the 2016-2017 school year, Charterhouse will pay an additional $2,000 in annual rent for each student in excess of 30. The rent initially was $300,000 and Charterhouse is currently paying based on 45 students or $27,333, Price explained. The Board of Supervisors cut the local contribution to the SAAA in the current budget. Advocates of the agency asked the board recently to reconsider funding the SAAA at the current level given that the amount is still below the countyʼs allocation before the reduction. A few weeks prior, she said she had read an article stating that you should take a full-size aspirin if you believe you are having a heart attack, so she did that about 10 minutes before help arrived. Three fire stations were called, with Station 2 Rivermont and Station 10 North Warren responding to the call to her address. She said she was placed in Station 10ʟs Advanced Life Support ambulance with the best high tech equipment and drug intervention available in Warren County.

“She identified it right away and as soon as she identified it she acted upon it, he said. Graber said you start to have injury, which is as soon as it happens. Their quick response and expertise were credited with saving Sluss' life.

STRASBURG — Blair Starr and her husband Ben Starr, both 29, bought their first home together in Founderʟs Landing in September 2016, and witnessed the beginning of what would be a long battle with the neighborhood bear.

“I donĘźt really see a solution to this unless everybody helps out,â€? she said. Teresa Holliday, 37, has lived in the FounderĘźs Landing neighborhood with her family since December 2011, and said that the bear has been more aggressive in the last year in his hunt for food.

The bear comes out at any time of day, without warning, from the quarry behind the StarrĘźs family home to search the trash cans in the neighborhoodĘźs fencedin backyards for an easy meal, damaging whatever is in his path.

HereĘźs How It Works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already

provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
