LAUREN DERFLINGER Lauren Derflinger has competed in goat shows for seven years alongside - and against - her sister Kristin. This year, Kristin is off to Indiana Wesleyan University, and Lauren will be showing her goats Tonic and Rhapsody at the fair by herself.
“We connected through showing goats together,” she said. “But at the same time it feels good that I’ve beaten her before but I won’t have to compete against her anymore.” Although Lauren said she only raises the goats for about four months before the fair, she has a lot of pride for the animal when it wins and always looks forward to judge feedback so she can continue improving. “It’s the bond that really feels good when the goat wins,” she said. One doe, Cadence, was a miracle kid for the Derflingers. The only living triplet of her litter, she returned to her mother on Christmas after a week of struggling to survive and was accepted. The Derflingers have kept her to show and breed since then.

Father Scott Derflinger wasn’t used to keeping the animals at first and loaned his support by building shelters for the goats. It was old hat for Barbara Derflinger, having grown up on a dairy farm. “It was pretty easy for me to start into it because I was very used to the farm experience,” she said.

Not only that, she’s had the Supreme Champion dairy cow at the fair for three years running.
Before making the decision to begin showing goats - with some helpful advice from friends, neighbors and the Internet he had kept a few goats simply as pets. His mother, Joann DiRoberto, said she never thought she’d end up involved in agriculture, being from New Jersey.

She said she already has a feel for her dream career by seeing her peers grow as a student adviser. “The best thing about it is you see people that learn from what you tell them and from your own experiences,” she said.
This year, Joseph will be showing four goats at the fair on Sept. 2.
While Rhodes said Lizzie’s help at the farm and markets has been invaluable, she emphasized that “I want her first focus to be on her schoolwork.” Although Lizzie is the fourth Rhodes child to show at the fair, Judy Rhodes said she’s had the strongest continuing devotion to agriculture. Lizzie will be showing two market hogs and a number of dairy cattle at the fair on Sept. 2.

KENNEDY WHETZEL
Kyle Lutz came away from the fair last year with a Grand Champion Steer prize and he’s in the running to take the title home a second time this year with two steers submitted.
Young Kennedy Whetzel is looking forward to her second year showing with three different species: lambs, steer and hogs. Her father John Whetzel showed cattle in high school and said he got Kennedy started in showing. She began with all three species last year at age 9, and she’s loved spending time raising all of her animals. “I’m just trying to give her a well-rounded view of production agriculture,” Whetzel said. “Each one’s got their own quirk.”
Kyle started showing steers and heifers at age 7. His father Brad Lutz said that meant Kyle was taking over a family tradition. Lutz said that the first and second years are typically the toughest for a new showman, and although Kyle was no exception, he’s come a long way in the ring.

Triplets to show sheep at county fair By Tom Crosby
The Ludwig brothers of Woodstock struggled at birth as micro preemie babies weighing only ounces. Now, only days after their 11th birthday, the boys will show sheep together for the first time at the Shenandoah County Fair at 8 a.m. Aug. 31.
Showing sheep has been a challenge in the past for Dillon Ludwig. He weighed only 24 ounces at birth, and has suffered from vision, behavior and cognitive problems due partially to a staph infection that prevented an operation during the brief window of time when a medical procedure could have saved his eyesight.
Dillon often has to use a wheelchair and a relative of the Ludwigs has outfitted the wheelchair with a metal brace to secure his Southdown sheep as his wheelchair is pushed into the show ring for evaluation.

Family Fun Day on Aug. 29 will mean a wide variety of games and contests for kids of all ages, as well as the kickoff ribbon cutting ceremony at 11:30 a.m. On that day, adults will be admitted for $4 and children 12 and younger will be admitted free. Free admission for children will also be offered on Sept. 1, seniors age 65 and older will have $3 admission before 4 p.m. Sept. 2 and veterans will get free admission until 6 p.m. Sept. 3.
Eshelman said that because the fair will be producing the demolition derbies this year, the cash purse for the derby winners has increased to $2,800 per night.
Carol Nansel said she’s expecting around 127 exhibitors at the 4-H and FFA showmanship contests throughout the week. Competitors will bring out their animals at shows from Aug. 31 through Sept. 3 and set up to sell their livestock on Sept. 5. Harness racing - a big fair hit, according to Eshelman - will be held at 1 p.m. Sept. 2-5. Free and ticketed shows and events will fill the grandstand with music and applause every night of the fair. The Robbie Limon Band will play two free shows the evening of Aug. 28, and a free Bluegrass Bash featuring Bluegrass Brothers will begin at 6 p.m. Aug. 30.
“We’re hoping that will draw out more guys who want to help out and be a part of it,” he said. Workshops offer a window into livestock business By Kevin Green
Certification for youth livestock participants is growing in the state of Virginia.
The Virginia Cooperative Extension began offering certification through Youth Meat Quality Assurance Workshops last year.
Carol Nansel, an extension agent for 4-H youth, said the program began on the state level, with the 4-H and Future Farmers of America requiring the certification for participants to show livestock at the State Fair of Virginia.
“Our local livestock committee talked about it … and this year, we made it mandatory for our local kids as well,” Nansel said.
Corey Childs, agriculture and natural resources extension agent, said kids participating in the workshops are ambassadors who will show others how complicated the world of livestock and agriculture can be.
“A lot of people come to the fairs or shows or different events, and they don’t have the opportunity to be exposed to livestock in any other way,” he said.
The extension office organized eight local workshops for youth participants this year, with counties of Shenandoah, Warren and Clarke making the certifications mandatory. The certifications are still voluntary for Page and Frederick counties. Childs said they offer 12 modules in the workshops, covering a wide variety of topics centered on animal care. One of the chief focuses of this year’s workshops was using antibiotics in a responsible way, he noted. “We want to make sure that they become familiar with the proper use of antibiotics, if they are going to have to administer them in their animals,” Childs said.
Childs said that 286 kids completed the workshops this past year, which he added is around two-thirds of the total participants within the program. What the participants take away from the workshops can also vary by age and experience. “Normally, when people walk out of the program, they’re glad they were there,” Childs said. “Everybody learns something that maybe they didn’t learn before.” Older participants, Childs added, find that certain aspects of the business get reinforced through the workshops. While only the state fair requires certification at the moment, Childs said he believes the program will expand and become mandatory across all counties in the future.
This includes teaching kids how to tracking antibiotics and medication that they administer in their livestock “As long as we can see growth in the which entails maintaining records, kids, and we can continue to have needle use and a whole host of other positive responses … it’s going to factors. continue to grow,” Childs said. Childs said they are also looking to Childs said, “It is high-quality inforreinforce the fact that the world they mation and it’s something the kids, if are operating in is a business. “Every time that you make a decision to do something, it can impact the bottom line of that business,” he said.
they are going to be producing livestock … they need to be able to do it humanely and effectively.” Childs also said that the country’s growing interest in where food is coming from will also play a role in the program’s expansion. “We want people to have a better understanding of livestock production, and how it’s done and how the industry proceeds,” he said, noting that most of the kids participating do not pursue livestock as a career. “A lot of them do it now, they enjoy it … they do it because they develop life-long friendships and those types of things,” Childs said. “What we want is for them to be agriculture advocates.” The hope, Childs said, is for this education will lead to people having “a better understanding of what agriculture is all about.” Contact staff writer Kevin Green at 540-465-5137 ext. 155, or kgreen@nvdaily.com

A New Way to Play Tech toys inspire imagination and action
A new study commissioned by Disney reveals that parents feel nostalgia for the way they used to play growing up and that they also have a desire to keep their kids active. The online study of 2,000 families across the country shows that while almost all parents believe in the power of active and creative play, they believe technology is also an important part of growing up today. In fact, 9 out of 10 parents are open to new technology that could play a role in keeping their child active.
Imagination becomes real The latest evolution of technology play is now on hand to help meet the needs of both kids and parents by bringing digital experiences into the real world. A new category of play, Disney’s Playmation inspires kids to run around and use their imaginations, but with a digital twist. The system of connected toys and wearables combines digital and physical play to put kids in the center of the action where they can actually become the hero or heroine of their favorite Disney stories.
The first system, Playmation Marvel’s Avengers, lets kids join on missions and adventures throughout the Marvel Universe. Purposely not tethered to an internet connection, Playmation Marvel’s Avengers allows kids to play anywhere they want – a bedroom, living room or yard.
it relevant for today’s tech-hungry kids. Systems appropriate for home use are plenty, but most major cities also boast indoor arenas and outdoor ranges for larger scale play. A far cry from the traditional chase and touch game parents recall, nonetheless, it’s a marriage of tech and toy that gets kids moving.
Kids can also login to an app to see progress, explore new locations and characters and unlock new missions. The starter pack, which includes a Repulsor Gear that connects to the Power Activators and two Smart Figures, is now available for preorder at

before hitting shelves this fall.
Throwbacks with a thrill Another win-win strategy: Putting a fresh technology spin on old favorites to make them hip once more. Take the old-school game of tag, for example. With the addition of infrared devices, targets and impressive audio, laser tag adds new thrill to an old-school game making
When it comes to letting creative imagination run free, there’s a world of high-tech art for kids to explore. Back-lit tracing pads, projectors for wallsize artistry and vibrantly colored screens all seem a far cry from yesteryear’s drawing tablets and big box of crayons (with a sharpener built in, if you were extra lucky). Yet despite the digital approach, at the core these toys inspire the same artistic expression as their tech-free predecessors. Although technologyenabled toys and devices top most kids’ wish lists, a growing number of these options are designed to pique the imagination and inspire kids to set their physical and creative expression free.

Super snacking: Kids snack three times per day on average, providing more than 27 percent of their total daily calories, according to research from Today’s Dietitian. And yet, kids aren’t consuming the recommended daily five or more servings of fruits and vegetables. Snack time is an easy way to get fruits and veggies into kids’ diets. In fact, boys surveyed were 76 percent more likely to be inadequately hydrated than girls, according to a study published in the American Journal of Public Health. Better Bets for Back to School Food choices the whole family can feel good about (Family Features) As you gear up for a new school year, it’s important to put your kids’ nutrition on the school checklist. Countless studies link school performance and healthy eating habits. Treat this season of “academic beginnings” as a chance for the whole family to take a fresh approach to better-for-you eating. From on-the-go breakfasts and brag-worthy brown bag lunches to after-school snacks and family-friendly dinners, there are plenty of ways to pack nutrition and flavor into every meal. Often, creating healthier meals can be as easy as simply trading-up or swapping one food ingredient for a more nutritious choice.
Another smart shopping tip is to plan, plan, plan. Paolillo suggests starting out right by planning a full week’s worth of menus, then creating a shopping list. This not only streamlines meal preparation, it saves household budget, aids nutrition choices and reduces the frustration and extra time associated with return trips to the store. 1. Determine what you will serve for breakfasts, lunches, snacks and dinners.
Mid-Day Snack: Get a quick protein and calcium boost during the day with cottage cheese or plain yogurt with fruit or granola. Lunch and Dinner: Make sure to include vegetables in all meals. On-the-Go Snack: Fruit like apples, bananas, tangerines and pears are perfectly portable for on-the-go ease. Dinner: Round out your day with lean protein at dinner, such as poultry or fish seasoned with herbs.
2. Create a grocery list of food ingredients that are needed.
Paolillo offers some final healthy eating, backto-school shopping tips. Take advantage of instore nutritional scoring systems or services to 3. Don’t forget to check specials and coupons in your store’s weekly circular. (Consider swap- help guide food choices, and make the majority of food selections from the outer perimeter of ping listed ingredients for seasonal or on-sale the store. foods.)
Find nutritious trade-ups and family-friendly meals to kick off the new school year at www.nuval.com/Shop/Recipes.
Bring Breakfast-to-Go Even if breakfast finds you crunched for time, prime the kids with morning nutrients to energize their day. Give them a breakfast boost with make-ahead options that can be enjoyed on-thego in cars and buses. Try portable Scrambled Egg Cups or Oatmeal Cups, which provide plenty of protein to get them through the day.
