Event-packed eight-day Shenandoah County Fair offers fun, food, entertainment

By Tom Crosby The Northern Virginia Daily The 101st annual Shenandoah County Fair will cover eight days this year from Saturday, Aug. 25 to Sunday, Sept. 2, with a familiar panoply of crowd- pleasing events that help make it the valley’s largest and most popular fair. “It is one of the last family fun activities of the summer,” said Tom Eschelman, general manager of the fair, adding that it helps support local nonprofit charitable organizations and 4-H and FFA clubs. A week before the Woodstock-based fairgrounds open, the Miss Shenandoah County Fair Scholarship Pageant will be held Saturday, Aug. 18, at Central High School covering seven age categories. Fair highlights include: With free admission opening day Aug. 25, there will be a morning tractor pull and in the evening a modified track and tractor pull. No rides or exhibits will be open this day. The following day Cole Shows Amusements returns with a carousel and more than a dozen kiddie rides and 22 adult rides including a new Funnel Force cen- Barns are open daily and visitors can see animals to trifugal swing ride and the “scary” 2.5-minute Zipper be shown – beef, swine, sheep, goats and dairy. ride. More than a dozen food vendors will populate the fairgrounds. The wooden nickel lunch is back for $5 and if the nickel is returned before 1:30 p.m., the $5 is returned. Starting on Sunday, Aug. 26, there will be daily 4-H livestock educational shows and competitions. Last year the fair had over 4,000 entries in the various livestock, home arts and horticulture departments.
Breeding cattle animals total 30 heifers, two bulls and three pairs of cow and calf. Breeding sheep include 44 ewes and 13 ram lambs; for goats 33 breeding does and for hogs eight breeding gilts. Two demolition derbies will be held and three successive nights of grandstand concerts will showcase country, Christian and legacy rock music in that order beginning Thursday night, Aug. 30. They begin with the Charlie Daniels Band, then 10th Avenue North with opening by Zach Williams, and conclude Saturday, Sept. 1, with bands Great White and KIX, which is from Hagerstown, Maryland.

There are kid’s activities daily with inflatable bounce houses, face painting, crafts and carnival games at the music tent, where various bands will play daily. Kids Kernal Korn Tent also has a play area. A greased pig contest (billed as Virginia’s largest pig scramble) always brings cheers and laughter from onlookers and will be held Tuesday, Aug. 28. There is a seniors rest-home breakfast, a Children’s Day, an all-day tribute to military veterans and a “My Fair Ladies” luncheon. Fair brochures are distributed throughout the Shenandoah Valley to visitor centers, convenience stores, local shops, etc. Tickets for the fair and various fair events can be purchased online at ShenCoFair.com or ordered from the gair office at 540-459-7300. The Shenandoah County Fairgrounds is one of the oldest fairgrounds in the state and its mandate is to help promote and benefit the community by providing a clean safe family environment for education and entertainment through the promotion of agriculture, business and other opportunities.

Fair to feature Christian, country, legacy rock music By Tom Crosby The Northern Virginia Daily The sound of music at this year’s Shenandoah County Fair in Woodstock will feature Christian music stars, a pair of legacy rock music bands and a return visit by Country Music Hall of Famer Charlie Daniels. While Christian and country music have been a mainstay of the fair in recent years, the rock bands – both popular in the 1980s - are “a different type of music genre for a county fair,” said Tom Eschelman, fair general manager. “We hope the diversity will attract folks to the fair who might not otherwise come. It’s a bit risky.” The two rock bands, Great White and KIX, were formed in 1977; KIX in Hagerstown, Maryland, and Great White in Los Angeles. They will be the fair’s last music concert. Both bands drifted apart over the years but eventually reformed with most of their original members. Today, the bands tour various venues, including occasional performances in England. Great White has sold more than 10 million records worldwide and Mark Kendall, lead guitarist and founding member, said when they play at the Shenandoah County Fair, the audience will see a band “That puts everything we have into a live show.”

“We want people to be entertained and walk away understanding the experience,” he said. The band sponsors children through Compassion International and has received several nominations, winning three times awards from GMA Dove, which honors outstanding achievements and excellence in Christian music. Also performing as a lead-in to Tenth Avenue North will be Zach Williams, a Grammy award-winning Christian rock artist who was nominated in five categories in 2017 by GMA Dove, winning twice as new artist of the year and for the pop/contemporary recorded song of the year ("Chain Breaker"). Also on the fair’s concert schedule is the Charlie Daniel’s band. Daniels, 82, is a member of the Grand Ole Opry, Country Music Hall of Famer and member of the Musicians Hall of Fame and Museum. His music encompasses bluegrass, country, rock, outlaw country, country rock, blues rock, rock and roll, blues and gospel. This is his second appearance at the Shenandoah County Fair.

Frisbee dogs to perform at Shenandoah County Fair By Tom Crosby The Northern Virginia Daily
won the Skyhoundz World Champions Open Division.
Dogs are Lawrence Frederick’s best friends and for the past 30 years he has taught them several dozen “wow” tricks with Frisbees.
The secret is “love, developing the bond, the trust, the training and making it all fun,” said Frederick, noting Zorra, age 11, will perform at the fair.
Frederick and his four-legged friends have performed more than 10,500 shows world-wide, won national competitions, entertained millions and he’s bringing his highly acclaimed DiscConnectedK9s show to this year’s Shenandoah County Fair.
Frederick has worked with 42 dogs over the years with his personal Frisbee fascination beginning when he started tossing the disc around at the age of 12.
“It’s the first time in the history of the fair that we have had a dog show,” said Thomas E. Eschelman, the fair’s general manager, adding they are “world champion dogs.”
It became a passion when he attended tiny Glassboro State College (enrollment less than 13,00) in New Jersey (now Rowan University).
Frederick played on the college’s Ultimate Frisbee team, which won national Courtesy photo college championships in 1979 and 1980 and later played Frisbee Golf and Lawrence Frederick, owner of Disc-ConnectedK9s, does a Frisbee trick with a border collie named Bonez Altamont High, also known as Mr. Bonez. Rider knows he can play with other people.”
“Whether you are 9 or 90, you will enjoy it and expect to have some fun,” he said
Frederick is happiest “whenever I am playing with my dogs.”
Frederick’s dog breeds include border collie, German shepherd, Labrador retriever, Texas heeler, miniature Australian shepherd and mixed breeds.
But after thousands of shows world wide, “there are two things that will keep me from going back” to a venue, he said. “First is an unsafe surface for my dogs.”
The oldest dog performing will be Easy Rider, 13, a Texas heeler and the youngest Copper Top, 18 months old, a border collie who was adopted out of Harrisonburg.
He noted one show had just laid down sod patches and when Zorra, a world champion at the time, came off her back doing a trick, her leg went into a seam in the sod and she broke her leg.
“Most of my top dogs are between 4 and 8 years old,” said Frederick. “Right now Galaxy is my best dog, and she is only 2 but she’s an exception.”
“Second are places where people are idiots,” he said. “They think their fair is the best ever, and they are nasty and difficult to deal with.”
After the show, Frederick says they sometimes let audience members pose with the dogs and occasionally allow a child to throw a Frisbee.
“I try to be gentle and treat people like I want to be treated, and there are two places I will not go back to if the same fair general managers are still there,” he said.
“When I work with a dog, I want them to know I am the only person they should work with,” he said, but “Easy

Do people ever ask you why you do what you do? Farming is hard work. And there are lots of obstacles. We get that. But we also know that you’re doing what you love. And a visit to the fair reminds everyone why agriculture is so important to Shenandoah County. There’s nothing we’d rather do than provide financing to the farmers in Virginia. For over 100 years, we’ve been helping rural America grow great things – whether it’s crops, or cattle, or kids.
