African American Festival celebrates 25 years this June By Ashley Miller amiller@nvdaily.com

“For many of the people that come, it’s not about the food or the fun,” she said. “It’s about the fellowship. Our sense of community runs deep.”

The African American Festival began when Chris Washburn, then a Harrisonburg City employee, wanted a way to bring the community together to embrace and be in touch with their cultural roots. Raymond said since the beginning the community has turned out for the funfilled day. Washburn is expected to return from her home in Florida this June to celebrate the festival’s 25th anniversary.

This is just another a way to draw people out for a good day with friends.” More event details will be released closer to the event. Visit www.hraaf.org

For the past 16 years bluegrass fans from around the country have descended on the small town of Berryville for a weekend of camping, tunes and watermelon. Known as the Watermelon Park Fest, this three-day event celebrates national and local performers and the region's cultural heritage, all along the banks of the Shenandoah River.

“We really just wanted to continue to bring people together to enjoy music in a camp festival style,” he said. “As a new generation of music lovers attend, we hope to continue to grow.”

Discover what Luray Caverns have to offer this summer

By Ashley Miller amiller@nvdaily.com

Explore the iconic Luray Caverns and discover what it means to be the largest and most popular caverns on the East Coast. From guided tours along well-lighted walkways to ceilings 10 stories high, the caverns are four centuries of history nestled in the Shenandoah Valley that are sure to wow any geology fan.

John Shaffer, director of public relations, said over a half a million visitors explored the caverns in 2017 because statistics show that Americans are reconnecting with nature, their environments and national parks like never before.

“Patterns and trends of Americans are changing,” Shaffer said. “The older generations are remembering when they spent their summers at the caverns because there weren’t as many summer camps as we see today. They’re passing their ‘remember when’ moments on to their children.

"We’ve always been a popular destination for families," Shaffer said, "because we can provide fun, leisure activities for all ages."

The Luray Caverns were discovered in 1878. Generously adorned with speleothems that include columns, mud flowers, stalactites, stalagmites, flowstone and mirrored pools, Luray Caverns tell the story of the creation of the valley one rock at a time.

Patrons can explore the enormous chambers, Giant Hall at 47 feet tall and the Great Stalacpipe Organ, the world’s largest musical instrument all in a single day. The caverns are also home to a commercial rope

course and hedge maze. The Toy Town Junction Museum offers an array of vintage miniature dolls, trains and other collectible toys, while the Car and Carriage Caravan Museum features over 140 items related to early transportation, including a Conestoga wagon and 1892 Mercedes-Benz. The Luray Valley Museum is home to a collection of historic Shenandoah Valley artifacts dating back to 1536. “Our goal here at the caverns is to entertain and educate people about the environment,” Shaffer said. “It’s important to understand how everything is connected, like our drinking water.”

“People are traveling more and more in the offseason,” he said. “Perhaps it’s due to hectic schedules or because of discounts, but we’ve seen an influx in visitors in the past five years.” Shaffer added that the caverns are an economic driver for the community, and while that’s important he feels like national parks as a whole are vital to the well being of the country. “It’s incredible to be part of such a great wonder of nature,” he said. “We take great pride in what we offer here at the caverns.”

Visit Luray Caverns as it celebrates its 140th year of discovery at the annual Anniversary of Discovery on Aug. 11.
