An Evening with Arlo Guthrie Shenandoah Valley Music Festival Presents
(The Weavers), Leadbelly, Cisco Houston, Ramblin’ Jack Elliott, Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee, all of whom were significant influences on his musical career. He gave his first public performance at age 13 and quickly became involved in the music that was shaping the world during the 1960s.
Arlo Guthrie was born in 1947 with a guitar in one hand and a harmonica in the other. He grew up in Coney Island, the eldest son of America’s most beloved singer/writer/philosopher Woody Guthrie and Marjorie Mazia Guthrie, a professional dancer with the Martha Graham Company, and founder of The Committee to Combat Huntington’s Disease. Guthrie grew up surrounded by dancers and musicians: Pete Seeger, Ronnie Gilbert, Fred Hellerman and Lee Hays
Shenandoah Valley Music Festival 2017
Guthrie practically lived in the most famous venues of the “Folk Boom” era. In New York City, he hung out at Gerdes Folk City, The Gaslight and The Bitter End. In Boston’s Club 47 and in Philadelphia he made places like The 2nd Fret and The Main Point his home. He witnessed the transition from an earlier generation of ballad singers like Richard Dyer-Bennet and bluesmen like Mississippi John Hurt to a new era of singer-songwriters such as Bob Dylan, Jim Croce, Joan Baez and Phil Ochs. He grooved with the beat poets like Allen Ginsburg and Lord Buckley and picked with players like Bill Monroe and Doc
Watson. He learned something from everyone and developed his own style, becoming a distinctive, expressive voice in a crowded community of singersongwriters and political-social commentators. Guthrie’s career exploded in 1967 with the release of “Alice’s Restaurant,” whose title song premiered at the Newport Folk Festival and helped foster a new commitment among the ’60s generation to social consciousness and activism. Guthrie went on to star in the 1969 Hollywood film version of “Alice’s Restaurant,” directed by Arthur Penn.
With songs like “Alice’s Restaurant,” too long for radio airplay, “Coming into Los Angeles,” banned from many radio stations (but a favorite at the 1969 Woodstock Festival), and the definitive rendition of Steve Goodman’s “City of New Orleans,” Guthrie was no one-hitwonder. An artist of international stature, he has never had a hit in the usual sense. Over the last five decades, Guthrie has toured throughout North America, Europe, Asia, Africa and Australia winning a wide, popular following. In addition to his accomplishments as a musician, playing the piano, six and twelve-string guitar, harmonica and a dozen other instruments, Guthrie is a natural-born storyteller, whose tales and anecdotes figure prominently in his performances.

“Sgt. Pepper and The Summer of Love” Saturday, July 22, 8:00 p.m
We’re going back in time this summer. The activist and clown Wavy Gravy once said, “If you can remember the ‘60s, you weren’t really there.” We’re here to jog your memory if you can’t remember and to introduce those who weren’t around for that watershed year of change, energy and fierce counterculture determination. Scholar, journalist and editor Harvey Kubernik, in his recently published comprehensive history, “1967: A Complete Rock Music History of The Summer of Love” put it succinctly:
“No previous moment – not the bobby soxers clamoring for Sinatra in ’47; not the poodle-skirted screamers pining for
Elvis in ’57; not even the first salvos of the British invasion in ’64 – had prepared listeners young and old, square and hipster, for what flew out of 1967’s sonic cuckoo’s nest.”
That year, 1967 “remains an indelible ‘hinge year’ of the 20th century, when so many aspects of popular culture, the
Shenandoah Valley Music Festival 2017
arts, fashion, politics, foreign entanglements, race, women’s rights, reproductive rights, drug laws and more, came into visceral focus,” he writes.
“The push/pull between the “Greatest Generation” and their impertinent offspring put paid to the “Ozzie and Harriet” vision of Middle America; in its stead was a raucous, unpredictable splash of creative indignation that spilled out like an unhinged oil well whose cleanup and consequences remain (deliriously) uncertain.”
But it was peace and love that was fueling the change, not anger or division. John Phillips, in a tune made famous by Scott McKenzie, urged young people to “wear flowers in their hair,” if they were heading to San Francisco to meet the “gentle people there.” The Youngbloods, in another hit song of the time urged, “Come on people, now, smile on your brother, everybody get together, try to love one another right now.” The changes of that year still resound. “The musicians, wordsmiths and cultural creatives first heard a half a century ago left their aural footprints in the Summer of Love’s sonic soil. Those echoes continue to endear and endure,” Kubernik concludes.
Selecting songs from the era for our evening was delightfully difficult work. After many long conference calls with Piedmont Symphony Orchestra personnel about topics rarely discussed and questions seldom asked, we came up with two set lists that represent the era.
While the Summer of Love was heating up in San Francisco, Los Angeles and other places, the Beatles released perhaps their most famous album that same summer. “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band,” tossed out the old pop notions of the British Invasion, remade the Fab Four and set rock music on new, experimental paths. “Sgt. Pepper” was only the beginning. Half a century after the Beatles’ psychedelic landmark, it stands as one of many musical astonishments of 1967 that shaped what we listen to now,” the Associated Press recently reported. “It was a year of technical, lyrical and rhythmic innovation, of the highest craftsmanship and most inspired anticraftsmanship. The rock album became an art form” shoving aside the three minute AM radio bubble gum and marking the ascendance of FM radio, with its longer songs and edgier, more experimental sound.
So to all who grew their hair long, played in a band, wore faded blue jeans, dreamed of changing the world – and had children who appreciate the music of your youth as much as you do – this night’s for you. Enjoy!

Meet the Artists Glenn Quader, conductor
A native of Washington, D.C., Glenn Quader is rapidly gaining national recognition as a dynamic and versatile conductor. Equally adept in classical, jazz and popular idioms, he appears extensively as a conductor, performer and session musician in the United States and Europe, placing him in consistently high demand on concert stages and in recording studios.
Since Quader’s appointment as music director of the Piedmont Symphony Orchestra in 2005, his tenure has been marked by innovative and enthusiastically received programming and has included three world and two U.S. premieres. The 2007-2008 season included a sixth premiere and the orchestra’s first commission, when composer/guitarist Marcus Wolf performed as soloist. Under Quader’s leadership, the organization has increased its paid core membership, added to the number of performances and enjoyed a three-fold rise in season subscriptions.

The HillBenders present The Who’s “Tommy,” a “Bluegrass Opry!”
More than four decades after its original release, The Who’s famous rock opera “Tommy” is now fully realized as a fulllength bluegrass tribute by the Missouribased bluegrass band, The HillBenders. Conceived and produced by longtime musician/producer Louis Jay Meyers, this “Bluegrass Opry” brings a new perspective to “Tommy,” while paying respect to its creators.
Meyers had been looking for the right band to pull off this high-wire bluegrass approach for several decades, and he found The HillBenders were the right fit. With a perfect mix of virtuoso musicianship and rock star Shenandoah Valley Music Festival 2017

Emmylou Harris Shenandoah Valley Music Festival Presents
with special guests Eric Brace, Peter Cooper and Thomm Jutz
Emmylou Harris
A 13-time Grammy winner and Billboard Century Award recipient, Emmylou Harris is perhaps one of the most admired and influential woman in music with her illustrious career as a singer and songwriter spanning 40 years. Since the mid-1970s, she has recorded more than 25 albums and has lent her talents to the recordings of countless fellow artists. In recognition of her remarkable career, Harris was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2008.
Known as much for her eloquently straightforward songwriting as for her incomparably expressive singing, she shook up country radio in the 1970s with hits that included “Two More Bottles of Wine,” “Together Again,” “One of These Days” and “If I Could Only Win Your Love.”
Shenandoah Valley Music Festival 2017
She established herself as the premiere songwriter of a generation, selling more than 15 million records and garnering 13 Grammy Awards, three CMA Awards, and two Americana Awards, including “Best Americana Album in 2014 for “Old Yellow Moon,” a collaboration with Rodney Crowell. In addition to Crowell, Harris has recorded with such diverse artists as Linda Ronstadt, Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Willie Nelson, Dolly Parton, Roy Orbison, Ryan Adams, Elvis Costello, Johnny Cash, Lucinda Williams and Lyle Lovett. A longtime social activist, Harris has lent her voice to many causes, including Lilith Fair and several benefit tours supporting the Vietnam Veterans of America Foundation. Harris is also an avid supporter of animal rights and is actively involved in Bonaparte’s Retreat, the dog rescue organization that she founded.
Eric Brace, Peter Cooper and Thomm Jutz
The new trio Eric Brace, Peter Cooper and Thomm Jutz is not really new. Brace and Cooper have recorded and toured as a duo for ten years now, and Jutz has been producing their records and playing with them for nearly half those years.
Hall’s Songs of Fox Hollow,” their 2011 release that featured them, plus Patti Griffin, Bobby Bare, Jim Lauderdale, Duane Eddy, and Tom T. Hall himself, all reprising tunes from his classic kids record of 1974, “Songs of Fox Hollow.”
The two of them have recorded four albums over the past eight years, a body of work that reflects their storytelling journalism backgrounds (Brace with “The Washington Post,” Cooper with Nashville’s “The Tennessean”), their love of harmony, their subtly wry humor, and their deep respect for the masters they've learned from and played with.
Together, Brace, Cooper and Jutz weave their stories, songs, harmonies and guitar playing into something special, which truly no one else is doing on the singer-songwriter and acoustic music scenes. The lyrics are as thoughtful as those of their heroes, a list that includes John Prine, John Hartford, Kris Kristoffersen, Tom T. Hall, Paul Simon and Townes Van Zandt. Add to that their vocal harmony work that brings to mind Seldom Scene, Emmylou Harris and the Everly Brothers, as well as their sumptuous guitar arrangements, and you have an evening of music that can’t compare to any other.
Brace and Cooper were nominated for a Grammy for producing “I Love: Tom T.

Most recently, Gill performed a recital of Czech and Slovak art songs and arias, “Písně Lásky a Naděje” – “Songs of Love and Hope,” in Baltimore, Md. Earlier in 2016, she sang the roles of Lauretta in “Gianni Schicchi” with Opera Camerata of Washington, and Serpina (Serpinia) in The In Series’ production of “La Serva Padrona,” receiving enthusiastic reviews from music critics for handling “the rollercoaster range from high to low of Pergolesi’s score with aplomb.”
Gill made her debut with the Cathedral Choral Society as a soprano soloist in the Fantastic Beethoven concert under the baton of esteemed conductor J. Reilly Lewis. Also in 2016, Gill performed as the soprano soloist in the Baltimore Composers’ Forum concert, where she premiered works by composers Anna Rubin, Keith Kramer, Janice Macaulay, Garth Baxter and Harriet Katz.
During the 2015-2016 season, Gill added the roles of Cio-Cio San in “Madama Butterfly” and Marzelline in Beethoven’s “Fidelio” to her extensive list of operatic repertoire and returned for her fourth production of “Don
Shenandoah Valley Music Festival 2017
Giovanni” to perform the role of Donna Anna. In recital, Gill performed the world premiere of composer Garth Baxter’s song cycle “Three Poems” from Edna St. Vincent Millay.
Other roles include Micaëla in “Carmen” and Kate Pinkerton in “Madama Butterfly,” both with Opera Camerata and Fiordiligi in “Cosi fan tutte” with Opera NOVA. She also covered renowned soprano Asako Tamura in the title role of Cio-Cio San. As Mimì/Pamina/Despina in The In Series production of “Fatal Song,” Gill received excellent reviews from critics for her “nuanced performance” and “bell-clear rendition” of arias by Puccini and Mozart.
With over 30 roles from opera, operetta, and musical theater in her repertoire, Gill continues to garner acclaim for her commanding interpretations, detailed characterizations, and dramatic performances. Past roles include the title roles in Puccini’s “Suor Angelica” and Massenet’s “Manon,” Nedda (“I Pagliacci”), Rosalinde (“Die Fledermaus”), Mimì and Musetta (“La Bohème”), The Mother (“Amahl and the Night Visitors”), La Contessa (“Le Nozze di Figaro”), Donna Elvira (“Don Giovanni”), and Pamina (“Die Zauberflöte”) with companies including The Singers’ Theatre of Washington, Baltimore Opera Theatre, Aurora Opera Theatre, and Opera in the Ozarks.
Gill won the grand prize for the 2017 Alpha Corinne Mayfield Award in Opera Performance from the National Federation of Music Clubs. She was also a first prize winner in the 2013 Barry Alexander International Vocal Competition, where Gill made her Carnegie Hall debut in the competition Winners’ Recital on Jan. 27, 2013. In 2012, Gill also won the grand prize in the 2012 Singer Recital Competition for
the Art Song Festival of Toledo, Ohio and performed a full solo recital program for the first evening of the festival. In addition to her classical singing career, Gill is a voice over artist and acts in commercials and television, notably appearing as the “Opera Singer” in the season two finale of “ House of Cards.” Upcoming performances include concerts with the Baltimore Musicales, Lyric Opera afternoon recital series, and Opera Nights at Sotto Sopra. Gill will also record Garth Baxter’s “Two Last Songs” and “April Twilight,” which the composer wrote for her.
Piedmont Symphony Orchestra
Shenandoah Valley Music Festival is excited to have the Piedmont Symphony Orchestra back for a second season. As a not-for-profit arts organization, SVMF supports the Piedmont Symphony Orchestra's mission to provide an enduring creative outlet for musicians and the community that entertains, educates and furnishes a shared experience in symphonic repertoire. Founded in 1996 by Michael A. Hughes as the Piedmont Regional Orchestra, it started as an ensemble for amateur and student musicians. The orchestra rehearsed at Fauquier High School and provided several concerts per season. Upon the opening of the Highland Center for the Arts in 2003, the PRO established its residency there and soon thereafter changed its name to the Piedmont Symphony Orchestra. In 2005, Glenn Quader became the second music director of the PSO and continued the tradition set forth by Mr.
