Did you know that the holiday season between Thanksgiving and Christmas is the single most wasteful period in the U.S.? Each year, we generate 25 percent more trash in this country during this time, about one million extra tons. Here are some tips for clearing out the holiday clutter in an environmentally thoughtful way.

Use holiday cards as decorations. Add popcorn, cranberries, cookie dough and other homemade ornaments to your tree. Turn old cards into holiday postcards or gift tags for next year. Donate cards. Find out more at stjudesranch.org.

Consider replacing old light strings with LED lights. LEDs use 90% less energy. Recycle your old lights and cords at eCycle.

Recycle gift bags, shopping bags, boxes, tins, wrapping paper in good condition, and fancy ribbon. If every U.S. family recycled just two feet of holiday ribbon, the resulting 38,000 miles of ribbon would tie a bow around the earth! Recycle wrapping paper and tissue paper free of excess tape at any convenience site. Recycle your cut tree at one of the county’s citizens’ convenience sites Dec. 26 - Jan. 31. All sites accept trees free of decorations, tinsel, and wire except Greenwood. Organic waste is ground into mulch and re-used!

Premier Music Store Since 1937

Donate your used cooking oil for conversion to bio-diesel. Try www.freecycle.org or visit the landfill’s citizens’ center to recycle used vegetable oil.

Compost food scraps from holiday dinners. (Leave out meats and dairy products.) Also, compost your holiday greenery. Reward your garden and flower bed in the spring with homegrown humus.

oy Dovel, supervisor of the Auxiliary Gift Shops at the medical center, said Christmas is the busiest time of the year. “Like all businesses, we see heavier foot traffic coming and going from both shops in the hospital,” Dovel said. But the influx is not just hospital staff, she explained. “We also have a large following in the community.” The Auxiliary Gift Shops offer customers a wide selection of gift items. From jewelry, to flowers, to the sometimes-necessary quick snack, Dovel tries to carry something for everyone. “For many of our staff members, they work 12- to 13-hour shifts, three to four times a week,” Dovel said. “They simply don’t have the time or the energy to necessarily go out after work and shop.”

So, Dovel and her staff have brought the gifts to them. “We see a lot of nurses come in and pick up a quick little something for a co-worker or friend while they’re on their lunch break,” Dovel said. “But we also have many regular customers who come in and buy our handmade cards,” she added. Dovel said a few of the top holiday finds this year are handmade wreaths, ponchos, Willow Tree figurines and home décor. The supply of holiday cheer is endless due in part to the gift shops’ many volunteers. Doris Trant, executive director of volunteer services for the medical center said, they wouldn’t be able to do what they do without their volunteers. “We have over 800 volunteers who give so much to this hospital,” Trant said. “Every day we count our blessings for them and their hard work.”

4TH ANNUAL FEED A FRIEND IN NEED

Over the next eight years, proceeds from gift shop sales will go to the Cancer Center.

All Pets wants our fur-friends at local Shelters to have a joyful holiday season. For the fourth year in a row we will be receiving pet food donations from November 1 – December 16, 2017.

“Our goal is $100,000,” Trant said. Both she and Dovel are confident they will surpass it. Winchester Medical Center, South Tower, is located in the main lobby of the hospital’s south tower. Winchester Medical Center’s North Tower gift shop is located near the emergency room and mother/baby units.

All pet food received will be matched pound per pound by All Pets Cremation Center. Since we began this campaign, we have donated over 12,800 pounds of pet food to our local shelters and rescues. To help support our shelters and feed our fur-friends this holiday season, please drop off your pet food Monday – Friday 9AM – 5PM and Saturday 9AM – 1PM.
