Follow these four steps to ensure packages arrive on time By Ashley Miller For The Northern Virginia Daily

he holiday season has arrived and those with a pre-Christmas delivery date should be shipping their brown paper packages, tied up with string, as soon as possible.

Ann Coverstone, the owner of The UPS Store, 4 Weems Lane, Burke Center in Winchester, encourages customers to follow four simple steps to ensure that their package arrives safely and on time. “UPS expects to deliver millions of packages both nationally and internationally each holiday season,” Coverstone said.” Pick the right box

Packages shipped through The UPS Store must be packed in a new box for the UPS guarantee. For customers looking to reuse a box, make sure the box is ridged and in excellent condition with no writing, punctures, rips or corner damages. All flaps must be intact. Be sure to remove all old labels and blot out any markings with a black marker. This prevents any rerouting that may occur if a scanner reads old information. Finally, save money by using a box that’s just the right size.

Loosely filled peanuts are no longer permitted as many states have outlawed them due to their inability to degrade in the landfills. “For fragile items that requite special packaging for safe shipment, we always encourage our customers to come see us at the store,” Coverstone said. “We offer a wide variety of various cushioning options.” Close box securely

Shop big and local at Stephens City Outlet Store By Max Thornberry mthornberry@nvdaily.com itting snugly on Main Street, Stephen’s City Outlet Store offers a treasure trove for the bargain shopper tired of the fluorescent-lit big-box stores or the cavernous warehouses. Robert Luttler opened his outlet store nearly 25 years ago when his run on the auction and flea market circuits was coming to an end. At some point, he said, the high-dollar items he offered at the weekend auctions and flea markets stopped attracting customers. “We were doing auctions on Friday, Saturday and Sunday,” Luttler said. “When you have three a week for two years, everybody has so much of the stuff they can’t stand it anymore. Once someone has two-to-three TVs, they can’t use any more for several years. It got to where the stuff wasn’t bringing much money.” Auctions - and stores, though Luttler refused to admit it ran in his blood. He grew up with his dad auctioning items. When his dad died, Luttler told his mom he

would pick it up to help her make some extra money. After bouncing and middling through different scenes, Luttler set up in a shop on the corner of Main Street in Stephen’s City. He expanded from there, at one point owning two stores, and hasn’t looked back. The operation, which now includes anywhere between 15 and 18 employees, a three-story building and a truck for picking up pallets of overstocked goods, started out small. Luttler went to auctions or online auctions to buy merchandise for his store. Times were, and are, tough in an economy that rewards chain stores over locally owned businesses. Times are improving, and Luttler weathered the greatest recession the U.S. has seen since the Great Depression. “When you’re in a rough economy, the high-dollar sofas, shoes, jewelry, TVs and computers, people don’t have to have it,” Luttler said. “You have to sell stuff at a really good price that people use every day.” Finding that balance between what people need and what SEE OUTLET, PAGE 6

Did you know that the holiday season between Thanksgiving and Christmas is the single most wasteful period in the U.S.? Each year, we generate 25 percent more trash in this country during this time, about one million extra tons. Here are some tips for clearing out the holiday clutter in an environmentally thoughtful way.

Refresh Ornaments by swapping with friends or neighbors or visiting a thrift store. Donate Cards. Find out more at stjudesranch.org. The 2.6 million sold each year would fill a football field 10 stories high.

Consider replacing old light strings with LED lights. LEDs use 90% less energy. Recycle your old lights and cords at eCycle.

Recycle gift bags, shopping bags, boxes, tins, wrapping paper in good condition, and fancy ribbon. If every U.S. family recycled just two feet of holiday ribbon, the resulting 38,000 miles of ribbon would tie a bow around the earth! Recycle wrapping paper and tissue paper free of excess tape at any convenience site. Recycle your cut tree at one of the county’s citizens’ convenience sites Dec. 27 - Jan. 31. All sites accept trees free of decorations, tinsel, and wire except Greenwood. Organic waste is ground into mulch and re-used! Recycle your used cooking oil. Visit the landfill’s citizens’ center to recycle used vegetable oil. (5-gal.max) Avoid the temptation to overcook. Reduce food waste. Send leftovers home with guests. Compost food scraps from holiday dinners. (Leave out meats and dairy products.) Also, compost your holiday greenery. Reward your garden and flower bed in the spring with homegrown humus.

Don’t trash your treasures. Remember local charitable organizations when cleaning out closets to make room for new gifts. Make sure donations are in very good condition. Save-a-Sole recycles shoes, luggage, backpacks, etc. in any condition! ReThreads recycles gently used clothing, linens, drapes, fabric & stuffed animals. Visit your neighborhood convenience site. SAS collection boxes can also be found at the Workingman’s Store/Total Image and the Frederick County Animal Shelter. Shipping a gift? Reuse packing peanuts or try unbuttered popcorn. Carry reusable totes when shopping. Recycle old electronics. Updating electronic gadgets? Bring e-waste to eCycle 7 a.m. to 1 p.m.

on Sat., Jan. 12th at the landfill. (Fees for computer screens and tvs.) Old electronics are simply too good to waste!

May your holiday be merry and green! 665-5643 • www.fcrecycles.net

makes money has been a “headache,” Luttler said. “I wouldn’t do it again. It’s a lot of headaches,” he said. “If I did it again, I’d stay down on the corner where we started out at. I made more money there renting than I do here owning the building.” Headaches aside, Luttler said he still gets a rush from what he’s doing. What’s in stock changes by the week, he said. The only time he knows exactly what he’s getting is if he buys something from auction online, otherwise, he is like a kid on Christmas Day every week. “It’s awesome; you never know what you’re going to get,” he said. “You send the check with your driver, he pays for the load, he brings the paperwork back, that’s the first time you see it. You have no idea what you’re getting.” Digging into new pallets of clothes, food, furniture or home goods isn’t all that gets Luttler excited. More than anything, he said, he likes the people who come into his store. “I like dealing with the public,” Luttler

Strategic Paws offers positive training, boarding for dogs By Donald Lambert dlambert@nvdaily.com

n 2015, Lance and Connie Moss decided to do their part in helping out dogs and their owners.

The couple opened the Strategic Paws Training facility right outside of Stephens City. The facility allows people to bring their canine friends to train or to stay in their kennel when their owners go out of town. “We are a positive training facility,” Connie said. “Everything is positive and reinforcement training. We don’t use choke chains or shock collars. We’re all about striking a balance between the dog and the owner and finding a common goal to work toward.” Strategic Paws offers various types of training, including agility, teamwork, and competition-style obedience training. “Everything is geared toward pet dogs transferring or crossing over into sports, not just expensive sports dogs,” Connie said. “We like everybody, and we want everyone to participate and do something with their dog.” Connie Moss, who handles the dog

How to be certain you’re buying safe toys this holiday

F

ew things compare to seeing the joy on a child’s face upon opening a holiday gift. Many adults remember holiday gifts they received as children, and holiday shoppers often try to look for gifts that will be just as memorable to the special youngsters in their lives. Shoppers might have kids’ smiles on their minds when holiday shopping, but it’s just as important to focus on safety when buying gifts for children. Prevent Blindness®, an organization devoted to ensuring everyone enjoys healthy vision from infancy through adulthood, offers the following tips to toy buyers who want to make sure they give safe gifts to kids this holiday season. • Read all warnings and instructions on the box. Before taking a toy to the check out line, give the packaging a thorough read-through, paying particular attention to product warnings and instructions. Such warnings are designed to keep kids safe. When buying toys online, only purchase age recommendations, which are typically listed on the toys that include the warnings within the product descrip- front of the packaging. Stick to these recommendations. tion. Kids might not have the ability to use toys designed for • Purchase age-appropriate toys. Kids’ toys come with older children, and such toys might not be safe for them to

use, so it’s always best to stick to the age guidelines. • Avoid certain toys. Toys with sharp or rigid points, spikes, rods, or dangerous edges can pose a threat to youngsters. Avoid such toys, opting for toys with rounded and/or dull edges instead. • Stick to sturdy toys. Kids do not often treat their toys delicately. Toys will be dropped or thrown, so choose sturdy toys that can withstand being dropped or thrown without breaking into tiny pieces. Tiny shards can pose a choking hazard to curious youngsters. • Purchase toys with the ASTM designation. ASTM International is an international standards organization that develops and publishes voluntary consensus technical standards for a wide range of products, including toys. Prevent Blindness notes that toys with the letters ASTM on the packaging have been tested and met the toy standards set for by ASTM. • Avoid toys with parts that shoot or fly off. These types of toys can damage the eyes and lead to other accidents or injuries. When shopping for toys for children this holiday season, shoppers must consider safety first.

18 ideas for making holiday memories C ounting down to Christmas Day means many different things to people across the globe. Although families likely have several different traditions they anticipate each year, it can be fun to incorporate some new merrymakers into the festivities. Here are some festive ideas to include in the days leading up to Christmas — a special family calendar of fun finds.

1. Annual memento: Have the kids or adults make one new handmade ornament each year. This way the tree is always evolving, and everyone can track milestones. 2. Cookie day: Devote one day to making Christmas cookies. Invite friends or family members over. Distribute some cookies to elderly neighbors. 3. Holiday classic: Spend a night in and watch a classic Christmas flick you’ve never seen before. Streaming movie services often put classics and obscure titles into rotation during the holiday season. 4. Christmas concert: Host a gathering of children where they can sing or perform their favorite tunes for an audi-

ence. Take it on the road to a nearby nursing home. 5. Dine out: Take a break from cooking, shopping and hosting and stop into a restaurant you’ve been meaning to try. Keep it local to support nearby businesses. 6. Adopt a child/family: Volunteer with a charitable Over 8,000 sq. ft. – more of everything you love including antiques & furniture!

How to make the season more eco-friendly

W

ith so much to do, it can be easy for people celebrating the holiday season to forget about the environment. But no matter how hectic the holiday season can be, there are always some simple opportunities to make it more ecofriendly. • Create an eco-friendly party theme. Many holiday parties have themes. For example, “ugly sweater parties” have become so popular that many clothing manufacturers now intentionally produce colorful sweaters that might otherwise draw the ire of fashionistas. Hosts planning to throw an ugly sweater party can easily transform such festivities into something more eco-friendly by encouraging guests to purchase their sweaters from thrift stores. A Christmas tree planting party is another eco-friendly party theme that can benefit the planet and revitalize local forests at a time of year when they might be depleted due to the demand for natural Christmas trees. • Serve locally sourced foods. Food is often front and center during the holiday season. Whether hosting family and friends at home, dining out or catering an office party,

patronize businesses that sell only locally sourced foods. Locally sourced foods are much more eco-friendly than foods that must be shipped from afar before they land on your dinner table, and such foods tend to taste fresh as well. If serving at home, use reusable dishware and cutlery instead of paper plates and plastic utensils. • Reuse decorations year after year. Decorations need not be discarded once the holiday season ends. Come the new year, inspect holiday decorations and store those that made it through the season unscathed. Doing so benefits the planet and will save you the trouble of shopping for new decorations next holiday season. • Get rid of your old holiday lights. Still using the same Christmas lights you used in 1995? Such lights are likely incandescent bulbs that are considerably less efficient than today’s LED Christmas lights. The Office of Energy Efficiency & Renewable Energy notes that LED lights consume 75 percent less energy and last 25 times longer than incandescent lighting. In addition, the OEERE says that LED holiday lights are easier to install and that as many as 25 strings of lights can be connected end-to-end without overloading a wall socket. An eco-friendly holiday season is easier to realize than many holiday celebrants may know.

Last-minute holiday shopping tips H

oliday shopping season typically begins the day after Thanksgiving and extends all the way to Christmas Eve. While that’s a considerable amount of time for shoppers to find gifts for everyone on their shopping list, many people will still find themselves putting holiday shopping off until the last minute.

But while waiting until the last minute to begin holiday shopping may not be as risky as it used to be, shoppers may still benefit by sticking to certain strategies so they can find the perfect gifts without breaking the bank.

won’t have to pay shipping costs to ensure items arrive on time. • Shop during off-peak hours. Shopping during off-peak hours can help last-minute shoppers make efficient use of the limited time they have to buy gifts for their loved ones. Visit stores early in the morning or late at night, or schedule a midweek afternoon shopping trip so you aren’t spending what little time you have left waiting on lines or hunting for parking. • Give something less traditional. Holiday gifts need not come from stores. Rather than spending their time shopping for gifts for loved ones who seemingly have it all, last-minute shoppers can give the gift of a donation in their loved one’s name. Last-minute shoppers who want to give something more tangible can create a homemade gift that’s both unique and heartfelt. If your DIY skills are lacking, give a loved one the gift of a night out on the town at your expense. Shoppers who wait until the end of the holiday shopping season to begin their searches for holiday gifts can still find great gifts without going broke.

Stay safe while shopping this holiday season

T

he holiday shopping season is the busiest, and most profitable, time of year for many retailers. According to the National Retail Federation, holiday retail sales during November and December of 2016 totaled $658.3 billion, exceeding industry projections by $2.5 billion.

Busy malls and retail centers can make it easy for shoppers to overlook safety and security. Thieves and other criminals recognize that and often prey on unsuspecting victims during the holiday season. For example, the Better Business Bureau notes that thieves can easily commit identity theft at malls, where shoppers preoccupied with shopping bags and looking after their children in crowded stores may be less likely to conceal their credit cards or PIN numbers at checkout counters. In addition to safeguarding their financial information when checking out, shoppers can take the following steps to stay safe while shopping. • Prioritize parking in well-lit areas. Mall parking lots can try shoppers’ patience during the holiday season. But

shoppers should resist any urges to park in faraway spaces or areas that are poorly lit. Criminals may be lurking in less traveled areas of city or mall parking lots, recognizing that they can quickly strike and abscond with stolen items. Shoppers should even be mindful of dark parking garages, only parking in such areas when accompanied by friends or family members. • Keep a watchful eye on smartphones. Unlike the flip phones that came before them, today’s smartphones are essentially mini computers that can store substantial amounts of data, including users’ credit card numbers. Many people have even linked their smartphones directly to their bank accounts in an effort to make shopping simpler. Lost or stolen phones can be expensive to replace, and savvy thieves can gain access to
