Dear Foundation Members: Each year, Northwestern Oklahoma State University serves thousands of students, coming from just down the street, others from halfway across the globe. Despite their different languages, backgrounds and cultures, each comes with a unique story and dream of things to come. Some see a future with limitless individual possibilities, some hope for a better career to support a family. No matter their circumstances, our students understand the importance of higher education. They see education as the pathway to a better life. I like to refer to a college degree as “the great equalizer.” Earning a college degree has been an integral part of the American dream. And that is why the work that is done at Northwestern is so very important. Everyday we touch lives of our students, fully investing ourselves in their hopes and dreams. For our faculty and staff, student success is a personal matter. It is because we know their names, we recognize their faces, and we know their stories. As supporters of the Northwestern Foundation, you also have chosen to invest in the lives of our students. Your investment in our programs and initiatives provides many deserving students with opportunities to share in the Northwestern experience. Private support of Northwestern has never been more important. Since 2002, state funding accounted for 68 percent of the University’s operating budget. For this budget year, the figure has dropped to 40.8 percent. Today, we receive less state dollars than we did in 2007. This decline in state funding has forced our students to pay a much greater share of their college costs through higher tuition rates. While the costs associated with attending Northwestern remain some of the lowest in the region, we know that families are feeling the strain of rising costs. It is clear that your support of scholarships and other programs makes a difference. For some, your investment has made the difference in their ability to attend Northwestern. Think about this for a moment: Your gift has made a dream come true. This annual report from the Northwestern Foundation clearly shows the strong supporters of our mission by alumni and friends. Each dollar given to the Foundation creates opportunities for students, through scholarships, enhanced classroom learning, co-curricular activities and student life programs. Over the past few years, private giving was the impetus for starting new programs in agriculture education and art, bolstering support for academic programs through endowed faculty chairs and lectureships, and improving the overall teaching and learning environment of our campuses. This year, Northwestern experienced a myriad of institutional and individual success, including: · The Division of Education received reaffirmation of accreditation for its teacher education programs and the department of Social Work also was awarded reaccreditation for its programs; · Northwestern expanded its course offerings online, becoming the first Oklahoma public university to offer bachelor’s degree programs in business, accounting and technical management in an online format; ·Our efforts to promote service-learning were rewarded by being named to the President’s Higher Edu- cation Community Service Honor Roll, which recognizes universities that reflect the values of exem- plary community service; · Lacy Vaughan of Lamont was named the state’s top social work undergraduate student; ·Delta Farmer of Woodward became the University’s fourth Brad Henry International scholar; ·Once again, U.S. News and World Report magazine listed the University as having the most affordable student housing costs in the United States; and ·Northwestern was moved forward in the process to achieve NCAA Division II membership. These are just a few examples of the many successes that we have experienced in the past year. Our students are the ultimate beneficiary of these accomplishments, and, in one way or another, each can be traced back to the support we receive from members of the Northwestern Foundation. On behalf of our students, I thank you for your continued support and for truly making dreams come to life. Sincerely,

Janet Cunningham, Ed.D. President

“Life is a gift, and it offers us the privilege, opportunity, and responsibility to give something back by becoming more.” ~Tony Robbins

Dear Friends of Northwestern and the NWOSU Foundation, It has been a privilege and honor to serve as Chair of the Northwestern Foundation Board of Trustees this past year. It has been an exciting year for our University with successes in college affordability, educational accreditation, fine arts achievements, rodeo notoriety and NCAA Division II membership advancement. Your generosity and contributions from the City of Alva sales tax have enabled the Foundation to provide scholarships, fund endowed professorships and assist the University by purchasing expansion property to meet long term goals and objectives. This past year we provided 187 student scholarships totaling $719,053.70. Recent figures reflect that 55% of undergraduate students received Northwestern scholarships. Our goal is to increase the number of these scholarships to 66%. With your continued help we are getting there. The endowments help foster and maintain the level of education we have known to expect from our University and its graduates. These gifts are changing lives by enabling quality education to begin and continue through graduation. Under the highly capable leadership of Dr. Cunningham, University staff and faculty, we have an institution of which we can be proud. We have a dedicated and enthusiastic Chief Executive Officer who enjoys substantial support from the Director of Alumni Relations and the efficient members of their staff. We can also be proud of the close partnership among the University, Foundation and Alumni and the results being obtained. The Foundation Executive Committee and the Investment, Governance and Development Committees have devoted substantial time and effort to ensure that your donations are fruitfully utilized to accomplish the mission of the Foundation. It has been a pleasure to serve with them. With your support of the Foundation, you can be involved in the continued future growth and excellence of our University and its graduates. At the same time we can participate in teaching and instilling in others what it means to “Ride Rangers Ride. Sincerely,

Stewart Arthurs Chair Northwestern Foundation, Inc. Class of 1962

To my Friends of the Foundation,

Thank you again for your support this last year. Once again, you have helped our University change lives in an extremely positive means through education. Every day I have the opportunity to see and talk to the students that are on our campus and I am always amazed at the quality of the young people that choose to attend here. I know we all hear negative stories about the problems with this generation. These trends only enhance my appreciation and surprise at the manner in which I see most of our students conduct themselves. Most are polite, appreciative, hard-working, dedicated and absolutely effervescent. For those of you with no confidence in our future generation, take heart. I believe we are still growing young leaders at Northwestern that will help guide our state and nation to success. What keeps you up at night? What are your greatest fears? Personally, as a father of three daughters, my greatest fear is something happening to one of my children. My eldest daughter is now a junior here at Northwestern so things have settled some since her freshman year. Even though I am completely aware of the excellent safety record of our campus, she had to endure her father waking up in the middle of the night, in a cold sweat, with concerns of her whereabouts and safety. Am I the first parent that has had to make this transition as the first-born leaves the nest? I doubt it. I don’t know what parents did before cellphones. On a broader scale, I will tell you there are a couple of trends that concern me for our nation. The first of which is the growing mountain of student debt that is bearing down upon our young people. In 2012, our national student debt for the first time surpassed both auto loans and credit cards at a total of $730 billion. What is even more shocking is that roughly two-thirds of that debt is held by people over the age of 30. Students are carrying that debt into a time in their lives when they should be buying a house, starting a family, and saving for retirement. I am unsure of what the long term economic consequence of this trend will be, but I cannot envision a positive outcome. The second trend that I find disconcerting is the national downward spiral of our students’ performance in science, technology, engineering and math (or STEM). In 2011, the United States students scored 23rd in math and 31st in science when compared to 65 other top industrial countries. If you consider the rate of globalization occurring every day, where will this leave our nation and our economy in the future? When I was growing up, we were putting people in space. I even remember the first computers and hand-held calculators being created right here in the United States. Will we see that in the future? What will our children and grandchildren experience? I don’t know how these issues will be solved nationally, but I do know how we are addressing them at Northwestern. Nationally, Northwestern still has one of the lowest debt loads for our graduating students. That is because Northwestern continues to keep tuition, room and board costs down and we offer generous scholarship support. I am also happy to offer that Northwestern has established two more key positions this year, one is in math and the other in science. These two positions will help keep our students competitive in our ever-changing technologicallydependent nation and world. Northwestern’s responses are possible because people like you choose to provide for scholarships and other programs that assist students in their quest for higher-learning and a diploma. Vince Lombardi once said, “People who work together will win, whether it be against complex football defenses, or the problems of modern society”. I want to thank you again for working together with Northwestern to solve what I consider major problems of society. Knowing that together we can help fix the problems in this part of the world gives me great satisfaction and it is what allows me to sleep well at night. At least until daughter number two starts her freshman year.

Carmen Sander

always planned on attending The University of Oklahoma because of its highly esteemed medical program. However, after attending a college fair with nothing in mind other than a day out from school, Carmen met a recruiter from Northwestern Oklahoma State University and changed the fate of her college journey. “It’s kind of a funny story. I filled out an application and Calleb Mosburg, a then recruiter, now Dean of Student Affairs and Enrollment Management, was actually at the table and he saw my application and yelled at me from across the room to come over. He told me what Northwestern could offer as far as scholarships and it’s something that no other university in Oklahoma could do,” Sander said. Carmen knew she would be racking up significant school debt with future plans of attending medical school. Because Northwestern could pay so much of Carmen’s education, it was the logical choice. “Northwestern has paid for my entire undergraduate education. I don’t have to pay anything and while I’m working I am able to put extra money away and start a fund building up for medical school.” Carmen came from the small town of Seiling, Oklahoma, and was raised on a farm. Moving to Alva was a jump from rural Seiling. “Coming to Alva was a big step for me because it was a lot bigger than the town I grew up in, which is different for a lot of students.” After visiting with recruiters, Carmen felt they were truly invested in her and her education, and that carried over into her thoughts about Northwestern. “Whenever recruiters from Northwestern would call me, they were so genuine and so interested in me and who I was and I felt they really wanted me to be here,” Sanders said. “When I got to Northwestern I realized that, that’s the atmosphere here. It’s very real, very friendly, and very personable.” When asked what scholarships have done for her, Carmen smiles and says, “This may sound cliché but they have helped me follow my dreams. When I was growing up I knew that I probably wasn’t going to get a lot of financial help from my family, as far as getting me through college and paying for medical school. It was all on me.” Carmen believes it’s important for older generations to understand the importance of education for younger generations and she is thankful for those who already do. “I want to say thank you, not only for helping pay for me to come to school, but many of my friends have scholarships to Northwestern and they are coming because of those scholarships. If those scholarships weren’t there, they may not be here.” Carmen is in the process of applying to medical school and feels very confident that she has been prepared well for this next step. “I feel overly prepared for medical school. The science department is incredible and I have all the extra benefits. I’ve made relationships, I’ve been able to go out and get involved, all without having to pay for it. That’s something you can’t put a price on.”

All the way

from Anchorage, Alaska, Isi didn’t plan on attending Northwestern. Life took some twist and turns, and after having a daughter, Isi ended up in Alva. “I met a girl I loved, and we had a baby girl together.” Because of circumstances they all moved to Alva. It was suggested that Isi return to school and he decided to enroll. Isi has always had a love for music stemming from his childhood. Isi’s third grade teacher played a major role in his decision to pursue a music degree. “My teacher stood out to me because of how she cared about teaching. She would ask us what we wanted to be when we grew up, and I always said I wanted to be a teacher.” Isi also sang with his family while in Alaska. “As a family we had this group thing going on and we would sing at church for the congregation.” Once Isi started classes at Northwestern, his choir director and advisor, Dr. Irene Messoloras, Chair of the Department of Fine Arts, validated his passion for music and education. “Since day one, she’s always been real with me,” Ofiu said. “She actually convinced me that music and teaching has always been instilled in me.” Isi has had to do a balancing act between school, work, and helping raise his daughter and his spouse’s daughter, both under the age of five. However, he is no stranger to juggling multiple tasks at once.. “It’s actually something I’ve always done because back at home, I was the only one who worked,” Ofiu said. He is the youngest out of four children. “My parent’s didn’t work and I would take care of them. I am used to being responsible.” Candidly, Isi says it isn’t as hard as people think and when asked what keeps him motivated, he responds with a simple, “My kids; I want what’s best for them.” Because Isi can’t work full time with his school load and home life, scholarships have played a tremendous role in alleviating some of the financial burden. Scholarship money helped pay for his recent trip to China with the Northwestern University Singers. Isi received the Dorothy Reichenberger vocal scholarship and is appreciative that there are people in the world who are willing to help those who are struggling. “This scholarship has helped me because being a nontraditional student, coming from a low income family it’s rough starting over again and coming back to school. This contribution has helped me tremendously and I thank Mr. Reichenberger very much.”

Deann Lanman

has had anything but the traditional route to completing her nursing degree. A 2013 graduate from Northwestern Oklahoma State University, Deann wasn’t sure she would ever go back to school. “I always thought I would try and go back. I’ve tried several times, but life didn’t allow me to do that,” Lanman said. A mother of four, one of those with special needs, Deann has been busy raising kids, and when she decided to return to school, she found she had a stronger desire than ever to complete her degree. “I knew where I wanted to be. I think being a nontraditional student actually helped motivate me to grasp and dig for what I wanted.” The journey wasn’t always easy for Deann. While in school, she lost all financial aid due to getting remarried. “I was already involved in school and I might not have ever started school knowing I didn’t have the financial backing to do it.” Thankfully, the financial aid office was instrumental in helping Deann apply for scholarships and getting started on student loans. Deann’s college journey was somewhat of a roller coaster. Just as things would start looking up, a new obstacle would present itself. Deann only missed two days of school her entire college career. The first time she missed was to medi-flight her granddaughter to a hospital and the second time was to bury her granddaughter. Deann returned to class the next day. Her tenacious attitude is something to be envied. “I cried for two weeks every time someone looked at me, but I knew I had to keep going,” Lanman said. A contributing factor to Deann pursuing a nursing degree was witnessing the care her granddaughter received while being medi-flighted. “My experience with her was another reason I got into nursing because of the care she received and the people it took. I thought to myself, I can do that, I can be that person for somebody.” Through attending Northwestern, Deann believes she has a bright and stable future. “By moving forward with what I’ve done, I’ve not only changed my life, but I’ve changed my family’s life, and I have changed the future of what we can expect and I have stability that I really haven’t ever had.” Deann knows she couldn’t have completed her degree without scholarships. She is extremely grateful for people believing in her and wanting her to succeed, something she hasn’t experienced before. “No one pushed me or inspired me to know that if there is a will there is a way.” Deann is a believer in paying it forward and she says her donors have paid it forward to her through scholarships. “I needed to be the best that I could be and in order to do that, scholarships have meant everything,” Lanman said. Deann hopes to be able to give back to someone in the way she has so graciously been given. “Whether I am financially able to pay it forward, I am going to be there. I am going to be that person for somebody, or for several somebody’s,” Lanman said. “If I could be financially sound I would give it all away. I would give everything I had to be able to give back to people who don’t have.”

“I needed to be the best that I could be and in order to do that, scholarships have meant everything.”

Patrick Driskill,

a senior graduating from Northwestern Oklahoma State University in May of 2014, didn’t even know Northwestern existed. “I was actually headed to Scottsbluff, Nebraska for a mission trip,” Driskill said. “We were close enough to Alva and there was an ad on the radio for Northwestern. I got on Google and saw they had a new Agriculture Education program. This interested me.” Patrick knew he wanted to pursue a career teaching in agriculture because of an influential ag teacher he had in high school. “There was a defining moment for me,” Driskill said. “I had trouble reading out loud and my Ag teacher told me everyone is going to struggle with something, and everyone is going to be great at something. The goal was to find that something that I was great at and for me that was showmanship.” Patrick had planned to attend a junior college and then transfer to Oklahoma State University. However, after completing more research, he decided to attend Northwestern. “I thought... Northwestern is a four year university and I can get my degree. Let’s do this!” Patrick moved to Alva on a Thursday not knowing a single person. “I sat in my dorm room and thought, well, I am going to be here for four years, it’s time to make friends.” Patrick had no trouble making friends through his time living in the dorms. “This is going to sound weird, but I loved living in the dorms. It’s such a socially charged atmosphere. Anytime you want to hang out with somebody, someone is there.” Patrick quickly became involved in the Ag Education program and soon became president of the Aggie Club. This allowed him to receive scholarships. “Scholarships have helped me tremendously,” Driskill notes. This is extremely important to Patrick because he was raised in a single-parent home where money wasn’t always readily available. “Sometimes my mom got paid on the 15th, and on the 14th there was a dollar and 40 cents left in the bank account. Sometimes we had to wait on the things we wanted, but my mom definitely hustled to make things happen.” Through scholarships, Patrick has not had to take out a single loan. “I am happy to say that I am a senior in college and up to this point, I am completely debt free.” Patrick said he is excited to know that he will receive his diploma and he won’t owe a dime. Just like Patrick’s Ag teacher helping him reach his full potential, he believes donors do the very same thing. Patrick believes their donation is an investment in his future, and that of his future students. “It’s kind of like a nod, them saying you’re doing ok but I want to help you out more,” Driskill said. “I don’t know these donors and I may never know them, but I feel by them giving, they are believing in higher education.” When asked what he would like to say to his scholarship donors, Patrick doesn’t feel like a simple thank you is enough. “I don’t really feel like ‘thank you’ covers it. Finances were something my family struggled with because of a single income household,” Driskill said. “I was very aware at a young age the dollars and cents of it all.” The scholarships he was awarded have taken the burden off of his family’s shoulders financially. That, Patrick says, is a wonderful blessing that he hopes he can one day give in return.

“ I don’t know these donors and I may never know them, but I feel by them giving, they are believing in higher education.”

Zimmerman joins Foundation staff

The Northwestern Oklahoma State University Foundation is pleased to announce the addition of Allison (Cunningham) Zimmerman to its staff in June 2013. An alumna of the university, Zimmerman has joined the Northwestern Foundation as communications and marketing manager. She plays a major role in disseminating media information regarding the foundation and alumni, and its donors. She also creates the yearly publications, The RoundUp and Annual Report. “We are excited to have Allison in this critical position. She comes to our team with a great education, solid experience, and many fabulous ideas to help our organization’s marketing strategy,” said Skeeter Bird, Northwestern Foundation CEO. “Allison’s Ranger Pride and superb work-ethic has made her an immediate perfect fit for our Foundation team. We expect great things from Allison and I doubt anyone will be disappointed.” A native of Alva, Zimmerman earned her bachelor’s degree in mass communications from North-

western Oklahoma State University in 2009 and her master’s degree in mass communication media management from Oklahoma State University in 2011. While attending Northwestern, she worked at the J.R. Holder Wellness Center and was an anchor for the university’s news team NWTV 7, and she most recently was employed by Share Medical Center as the Human Resources Director. Zimmerman is excited to be back on Northwestern’s campus. “I love Northwestern and I am so excited to work for the Foundation and give back to a place that has invested so much in me.” She and her husband, Michael have a 1 year-old daughter, Brooklyn.

Hall awarded Reichenberger Fundraising Award Stewart Arthurs, Foundation Board Chairman, presented Alan Hall, head football coach, with the Donovan Reichenberger Fundraising Award at the 2013 Northwestern Oklahoma State University Foundation Donor Appreciation Dinner. Hall was recognized for raising $79,258 for the football program. The funds will allow the football team to purchase two new uniforms and provide numerous items for the field house. Established in 2010 by the Northwestern Foundation, the Donovan Reichenberger Fundraising Award recognizes the private fundraising efforts of Northwestern Oklahoma State University faculty and staff. Named for Reichenberger and his example of generosity and fundraising service, the award honors an individual who seeks to further the mission and vision of the university, allowing continued prosperity during a critical time of diminishing state support. “It’s an honor to be given an award for just doing your job, and I’m thankful to be able to do it,” Hall said. “It’s nice to be recognized from across all parties involved and knowing that everyone is doing their part to help raise funds for this institution.” Hall played collegiately at the University of Miami (Fla.) and was a member of the Hurricane’s 1991 national championship team. He later transferred and earned his bachelor’s degree from Charter Oak

(Conn.) State College. He earned his master’s degree from the University of West Alabama. Hall is entering his second season as the Rangers’ head coach. “Coach Hall is working hard for his program and his student athletes. His efforts and the efforts of his staff are paying off with backing from our alums and donors,” said Skeeter Bird, Northwestern Foundation CEO. “I’m pleased to see our generous supporters recognizing the potential in his football program and investing their funds accordingly.” A former Northwestern faculty member and 1965 alumnus, Reichenberger is one of the university’s most generous benefactors. He has served as a Northwestern Foundation trustee since 1993.
