Impact Northwestern Foundation, Inc. : 2014 Annual Report
Dear Foundation Members: The best part of serving as president of Northwestern Oklahoma State University is the opportunity to meet our students and discover their passions. They come from all walks of life, every student different, but all united in their desire to learn and become a graduate of our University. Every student faces challenges in earning this degree, and unfortunately for some, those challenges include meeting the costs of tuition, books, room and board. Northwestern has been aggressive in making our degrees as affordable as possible. Last year, U.S. News and World Report ranked Northwestern as tops in the nation in campus living affordability and in the top 10 in tuition costs among four-year universities. Despite our efforts to keep costs contained, some students still struggle with meeting their financial obligations. And that is why your continued support of Northwestern, through the Northwestern Foundation, is so very important. Your gifts to scholarships and other initiatives allow a significant number of students to focus on the task of learning, and not worrying about finances. For some, your gift makes the difference in whether or not a student can pursue a degree at Northwestern. Literally, your support can transform a life. Can you imagine a more powerful impact? There has never been a time when private support of Northwestern was more important. Today, the State of Oklahoma provides only 40 percent of our operational costs, down more than 40 percent in the past two decades. As you can imagine, gifts that establish endowed chairs, professorships and lectureships, as well as direct program support, allow us to maintain the quality we expect in our academic offerings. The top 20 national ranking received by our Division of Nursing last year is just one example of our commitment to teaching and learning. Support for infrastructure, such as new construction and renovation of existing campus facilities, also remains important and is critical in recruiting new students. Looking forward, the University, in partnership with the Foundation, will soon unveil new opportunities for our alumni and friends to invest in the University, allowing it to better serve students. Together, we will be able to publicly demonstrate a vibrancy and loyalty that will resonate across the state and region. However, for this moment, let me express my gratitude for your support of our students. Each of you is to be commended for supporting Northwestern in its mission of educating a new generation of leaders, thinkers and Rangers. Thank you! Sincerely,
Janet Cunningham, Ed.D. President Class of 1976

Dear Friends of Northwestern and the
Northwestern Foundation,
The world is right here at Northwestern. Our university’s reputation has created an impressive change in the makeup of our student body. We educate students from all across the United States and 22 countries. Northwestern faculty and staff prepare tomorrow’s teachers, nurses, accountants, dentists, doctors, ranchers, farmers and others for their professions in Oklahoma, Kansas, California, Nepal, Australia, India and beyond. Northwestern’s impact is global. As I look back over my history with Northwestern – first as a student in the 1960s and, most recently, the last seven years of board service – I am amazed at, and proud of, the number of accomplishments Northwestern continues to make. Many of our achievements have been recognized by organizations such as U.S. News and World Report, College Atlas.org and The President’s Higher Education Service Honor Roll. One only has to drive by our campuses to see changes made possible by individuals like you who have chosen to make an impact on, and for, Northwestern. The renovation of our athletic facilities and the future transformation of buildings and facilities will continue to change the landscape of our institution, adding to the enrichment of the student and the community experience. Thank you for allowing us to have another amazing year. Our “total funds raised” almost set a new record, with more than $4 million raised for our students. The Investment Committee skillfully invested the funds for a return on our investments of just over 13 percent. Also, I thank each and every one of you who supported me and my colleagues during my tenure. It has been a great ride and I will forever cherish the opportunity. I ask my friends who will continue to serve on the Executive, Investment, Governance and Stewardship committees to remain on our road of excellence. Your service is extremely valuable and the results live for generations. Finally, I would like your help to encourage others to do their part and to make their impact on our university. Everyone can participate at some level, whether that means making a major gift, serving on a board or simply enrolling in the membership of the Alumni Association. We witness it every day – the rewards far exceed the investment.
All the best, Stewart Arthurs
Chair Northwestern Foundation Class of 1962
4 Annual Report
To my Friends of the Foundation,
As fall approaches, many of us are enjoying the healthy, green shades of nature. This is a welcome change as the last two years provided a challenging drought. Several people have said the arid conditions mirrored the weather that preceded the dust bowl era of the 1930s. Before the first of June, it appeared we would face a summer with worse conditions than the prior two. Then the rain began and continued, and it has made a welcome impact. We are now benefitting from lush grass in our pastures, and the farmers and ranchers are feeling the blessings of living in Northwest Oklahoma. The oil and gas industry also has created an impact in our area. Our local businesses are experiencing a huge uptick in sales, our roads are busy with vehicles and many of our locals have been blessed with large, recurring royalty checks. Our optimism increases as several new businesses have opened in our community. Less than five years ago, no one would have forecasted the local prosperity that now exists. This is a time to celebrate and enjoy the recent increase in both our population and wealth. At the same time, I agree with many of our community friends and neighbors that it is the perfect time to prepare for the future. Consider the fable of the “Grasshopper and the Ant”. The grasshopper played and danced all summer while the hard-working ant remained busy building stores for winter. The grasshopper ridiculed the ant for his efforts, while the ant focused on the future and collected food and material to sustain him and his comrades during the coming winter months. When winter hit, as it always does, the grasshopper found himself cold and starving while the ant survived warm and well-fed. Collectively, we at Northwestern embrace the mentality of the ant. We recognize the moral duty to collect and protect the funds arriving in our community by investing them back into our university. We believe the recent wealth needs to remain in our community. This occurs only when those with this wealth understand the philanthropic responsibility that comes with affluence. We need most to reinvest in our community in a manner that will sustain our part of the world when “winter” comes. When this oil and gas prosperity diminishes, we must be fiscally prepared to carry our community through the tough times. This happens when others, like you, invest in a manner that creates a legacy. Your investment creates an incredible impact that touches generation after generation. We are grateful for the many – with focus on protecting the future of our community – who are now impacting lives with gifts that stretch their comfort level. Transforming our university into the Northwestern of the 21st century will take the continued investment from our alumni and friends. You will see faculty and staff working like “ants” to secure our future. They may visit with you about how you can make a lasting impact in our community. Please give them your time and attention, as they are on a mission to take our university to a new level that meets the needs of our changing community, whether that world is in Oklahoma, across the nation or on a global scale. Join us in redefining “Impact”.

Opportunity to Impact
“What I like most about the United States are the opportunities available as compared
to India,” said Sugandha Aggarwal, May 2014 Northwestern graduate. “In India if you get a basic education in accounting, you have to carry that for your whole life. You cannot change your career, even if you hate it.” Aggarwal has been in Alva for three years. She was attracted to Northwestern because of the nursing department’s 100 percent passing rate on the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX). “I’m already a registered nurse in India and I want to go for my nurse practitioner license. For me, the NCLEX rate was a main priority for coming to Northwestern. My father googled it and figured out that Northwestern was economically good for us as well.” Aggarwal said the most academically challenging part of coming from India was transitioning from a subjective learning style to an objective style. In India, the primary examination of learning was done through written essays. When Aggarwal got to Northwestern, she soon realized much of her learning was examined based on multiple choice. “In India we had all essays and when I got here I thought, ‘I have been writing essays on this information, I know what I have learned and it will be easy for me to choose the right answer;’ but it wasn’t easy.” Another challenge Aggarwal faced was the manner in which patient care was administered in India compared to the United States. “If a patient comes in with pain, in India you would try to understand what the problem is and why it is happening. In the United States, you would decide what action needs to be taken first. It is more about priority,” said Aggarwal. “Here in the United States it is critical thinking and in India it is theoretical thinking.” While in India, Aggarwal took the NCLEX and did not pass it. She said it was a moment she felt like she couldn’t go forward. “My grandfather, having his traditional mentality, said ‘That’s enough, now she will get married and she will work here as a nurse,’” said Aggarwal. “That was a time when I really had to fight for this. It was my father who took my side. I probably wouldn’t have made it here without him.” Aggarwal attributes her decision to pursue nursing to her father. He is a doctor and she wanted to follow the same career path. However, Aggarwal said she was not good at physics and she knew a nursing degree could get her into nurse practitioner school. Aggarwal also noted that in India, the nursing profession is not respected and nurses are viewed as servants. This is another reason for her desire to advance to a nurse practitioner. Aggarwal expressed her deepest gratitude to the Northwestern nursing department faculty. She said they have been a great support to her during her Northwestern education. One particular faculty member, Mrs. Cynthia Martindale, holds a special place in Aggarwal’s heart. “For every student there is a phase when unnecessary stress comes into your head. Mrs. Martindale was there for me. Her door was always open and she supported me, gave me good encouragement and showed me how to be a better nurse,” said Aggarwal. When asked about the benefits of scholarships, Aggarwal said it has been a huge stress reliever. “Being 27-years-old, it gets a little difficult to ask for support from your family when you’re not earning a penny because you are in school.” If she had the opportunity to sit down with her donor, Aggarwal says she would tell them how grateful she is and because of their scholarship she is able to make a better career and future for herself. “If there was any way I could return to them what they have given to me -- not just in the rare form of money, but in any form -- I would be there standing next to them.”
“If there was any way I could return to them what they have given to me...”

Sapana Kadel was inspired
by members of her family to become a doctor. Both her father and sister are doctors. After realizing a strong aversion to blood and injuries, Kadel decided against this career path. However, this didn’t keep her from wanting a profession in the medical field. “I knew I couldn’t be a doctor, but I wanted to do something that still impacted the medical field,” said Kadel. “I want to be a biomedical researcher and I want to focus on immunology.” Immunology is a science that deals with the immune system and the cell-mediated and humoral aspects of immunity and immune responses. “I want to further understand the mechanisms of disease so that I can help prevent future ones.” Kadel came to Northwestern three-and-half years ago. Her older brother is a medical lab scientist in Enid and he told her about Northwestern after seeing the University’s but I wanted Enid campus. Kadel liked the fact that Northwestern was to do something that still very affordable; after researching the biology department, she felt comfortable that she could earn a degree that would impacted the medical field...” position her for success in her future career goals. Kadel graduated this past May and was accepted into two graduate schools, The University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center and The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. Because she is more familiar with Oklahoma and previously completed an internship at OU’s Health Sciences Center, she chose to attend OU to pursue her Ph.D. Laughing, she said she’s not ready to leave Oklahoma just yet. When asked what was the most difficult part “Somebody has given me money about leaving her native country of Nepal, Kadel said she didn’t feel as confident about herself in a new place, espeto do something good. cially as an international student. “Sometimes you don’t feel like saying you are an international student because people hesitate,” said Kadel. “International students don’t get as many scholarships as American students, and we have a lot more stipulations to be able to study here. Sometimes I just want to be student with no stipulations.” Fortunately, Kadel has received scholarships and she believes they have greatly helped her achieve her career goals. She says scholarships also have influenced her to become a more independent person. “The first semester, my parents paid for my school, which they could have continued to do. However, scholarships have helped me do it more on my own.” Kadel believes everyone deserves the dream of becoming something, but it’s not always that easy. She says scholarships allow students, like herself, to fulfill their dreams. “Somebody has given me money to do something good. The scholarships motivate me,” said Kadel. “You work hard to get the scholarship and then you work hard to be a good student.”
