think we can all agree that we’ve had an outburst on the golf. Maybe it’s a quick f-bomb, or a club slam, or simply slamming the flagstick back into the holeafter missing a short putt. We’ve all done it and, let’s face it, you have to let off steam after a mistake or risk having that bad energy follow throughout the round. Some are saying that Bio Kim, a player on the Korean Tour, took things a little too far when he gave a fan the middle finger during his round at the DGB Financial Group Volvik Daegu Gyeongbuk Open. Television cameras caught the incident that followed the sound of a cellphone camera going off during Kim’s downswing. Kim went on to win the tournament and later apologized for his actions, but Korean Tour officials banned him from competition for three years.

their actions. Should they have been punished? On one side of the coin, I agree with the ban. Kim, as a leading professional player, is influencing young golfers throughout Korea who are watching and aspiring to play professional golf. We don’t need the next generation of players to think that abusing fans is the way they should behave following an errant shot. On the other side, fans need to understand how their actions impact what’s happening around them. Sure, most professional events have throngs of fans everywhere and it’s easy to forget that the men and women between the ropes are playing for their livelihoods. Yelling - even encouraging words - can distract the players. Movement and noise during a swing can cause players to take their eye off the ball and miss a shot. It’s a game of inches.

Too harsh? I’d say that’s complicated. Players on the PGA TOUR have been throwing tantrums for years during official events. Players have been criticized for intentionally breaking clubs, yelling at noisy fans, spitting in cups, and swearing during televised events. None of those players, however, have been banned for

This is the kind of thing that happens every day on golf courses throughout the Northwest. The next time you think about throwing a club or losing your mind after a four-putt, check your surroundings and make sure there’s no one around to offend.

People go to the driving range for a variety of reasons. Some go to practice, other go to relax, and some just go for something to do. The one thing that notice not only at my club but also at other facilities that I visit is that most players gravitate towards the driver.

Ten with Rickie 2019 saw Rickie Fowler, wear some brighter pastels, interesting patterns, and a tasteful use of his signature orange on Sundays. The X Collection is something new.

Golfers are using Hole19 not only to help them plan & track their rounds using GPS on their mobile devices or wearable smartwatches but also to review their key stats.

Tsillan Cellars Because it’s one of the oldest, largest vineyards in the region, Tsillan simply has a lot to offer as a place for tourists and as a place for locals to convene.

• Fairway wood, either 3 wood or 5 wood six shots off the ground, six off the tee (10 balls) • Driver: 12 swings • Move back to the irons, odd clubs 9,7,5 eight shots each (24 balls) • Cool down with soft half sand wedge (10 balls)

Now, I will admit that the driver has a lot of appeal, but let us be real. The driver has far less impact on a good round of golf than we give it credit for.

The Great 48 Chelan, Washington is another amazingl high desert destination that offers the perfect reprieve for golfers and their families.

Most players would benefit more from working on their 150yd and in game. Therefore, my recommendation for today is to learn to practice in a fashion that works your entire game.

18.

• Start with soft swing half sand wedges (10 balls) facebook.com/ nwgolf

• After the bucket try to spend 15 minutes on the putting green Make sure you select a target for each shot, don’t just swing away. If you practice in this fashion, your entire game will get a work out and you will be onto lower scores. Good luck!

For your next range session, I would suggest purchasing a large bucket (approx 100 balls) and work your way through the bucket like this:

ow that we’re four majors into 2019, the world has had several good looks at the new line of clothes that professionals like Rickie Fowler are sporting this year. For Fowler, we’ve seen some brighter pastels, interesting patterns, and a tasteful use of his signature orange on Sundays. His clothing has come a long way from the days he was wearing head to toe orange. Kristin Hinze, global head of golf apparel for Cobra Puma Golf, said Fowler was exciting from the start of the career. “While his initial look was exciting, it was a little limiting for us as a brand. As he’s grown, it’s given our designers a chance to evolve and build the line accordingly.” While it feels like Cobra Puma’s clothing lines change overnight, that couldn’t be further from the truth. The time from nitial concept to stocking new apparel on store shelves is typically 18 months, a lengthy production cycle that all starts with analyzing trends in the market.

“We work with trend services to study styles and color trends coming out of Europe,” said Hinze. “We also touch base with Rickie and our other athletes four to six times per year at photo shoots and other meetings.” In addition to Fowler, Cobra Puma also partners with players like Bryson Dechambeau, Gary Woodland (recently signed to represent the company’s Folds of Honor Volition line), Blair O’Neal, and Lexi Thompson. 04

It’s a collection designed to go hand-in-hand with some of Fowler’s other partnerships. Hinze pointed out that “Rickie is the face of Mercedes and Rolex now, so he’s running with a faster crowd. DRIVING TO GROW THE GAME

T

here are a number of ways to measure the health of golf in the United States. Each year, the National Golf Foundation measures the number of rounds played, the number of juniors being introduced to the game, and amount of golf gear purchased. One key stat that people often forget about is golf played at ‘alternative sites.’

The alternative category covers a number of options for those looking to hit a ball with a club: driving ranges, miniature golf, indoor simulator facilities, and executive or par-three courses. With the rising cost of greens fees and the time that it often takes to play an 18-hole round of golf, more people are being exposed to golf by playing shorter rounds, shorter courses, or simply spending their golf time at the driving range. The problem is that many stand-alone, privately owned ranges are in danger of disappearing.

TOP GOLF FEATURES SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE.

In the last ten years, the number of driving ranges has seen a slight decline in the United States. While that may seem like something that could slow the game’s growth, it’s older, small facilities that are struggling to survive in areas where real estate is at a premium for urban growth. In larger areas, those small ranges are disappearing and are being replaced by larger complexes like Top Golf. Many facilities, like Vancouver, Washington’s Vanco range - a community landmark for more than 50 years - sit on publicly owned land, making them a target as housing and retail needs expand. If that facility closes as expected in late 2020, golfers will be forced to drive out to the suburbs or across the river into neighboring Portland to work on their games. Across the country, stand-alone driving ranges generate $661 million in revenue annually, A number that has increased over the last decade thanks to the popularity of Top Golf.

LOCAL DRIVING RANGES SERVE A VARIETY OF PLAYERS.

The Top Golf facilities - all complete with restaurants, bars, and interactive games - have become a big attraction in large markets around the United States. Already operating 53 locations, Top Golf recently announced an aggressive plan to put smaller facilities in metropolitan areas with populations of 100,000 to 500,000. “With this new concept, we will leverage over 19 years of operating experience and industry-leading Toptracer technology, while creatively designing and programming the space to bring an unforgettable entertainment experience to many more communities, reaching millions more guests than we ever could previously,” said Topgolf COO Craig Kessler. “We are actively looking for sites.” Kessler added that virtual golf facilities will spring up bustling cosmopolitan areas - like Seattle - where there’s no land available for development.

AMENITIES VARY FROM RANGE TO RANGE.

During a recent survey of readers, opinions were split between refined facilities like Top Golf and smaller ranges. Do you have a preference? Let us know if you have a favorite range or prefer bigger facilities like Top Golf.

Hole19 helping golfers on the course Hole19 is the most complete mobile app for golfers of all skill levels that want to improve their performance and connect to a worldwide golf community. Trustful, free and easy. ole19, a global, free-to-download multi-functional golf app with over 1.6 million registered users, announced a record 2,000,000+ golf rounds logged by its golfers in the first six months of 2019.

H

Since its launch in 2014, Hole19 has seen over 14,000,000 rounds played with the app, while more recently registered golfers on Hole19 have logged more than 500,000 rounds in both May and June of this year.

These impressive figures are a result of continued, sustained growth globally and represent a 54% increase in logged rounds when compared to data from the first half of 2018. In particular, golfers from both the U.S. and U.K have contributed to this significant increase with a year-on-year rise of 57% and 58% respectively.

Golfers are using Hole19 not only to help them plan & track their rounds using GPS on their mobile devices or wearable smartwatches but also to review their key statistics and connect with like-minded golfers using Hole19’s social features.

Hole19 CEO Anthony Douglas said, “We are proud of the record-breaking number of rounds logged on both the free and premium versions of the app. This increase is thanks to the collective efforts of the Hole19 team and, of course, our community of dedicated golfers.” “It’s also hopefully a sign of golfer engagement growing globally and with that, the entire golf industry can benefit from more golfers playing more rounds of golf and picking up the game” Douglas continued.

The app’s free version is quite good, with many of the features you’d expect to find. The premium version, however, does even more great things. For just $50 per year, golfers gain access to distance tracking, better watch functionality (scoring and tracking), club stats and recommendations, and augmented reality games. Hole19 offers a free trial of its premium offering when the app is first installed. For more information or to download the app to your iPhone or Android device, visit www.hole19golf.com. Northern California

Sacramento, California is one of those suprising towns on the West Coast that’s revitalizing its downtown area and making it a place for residents to congregate and for visitors to stay and play. Sacramento, California may not be on everyone’s golf destination bucket list, but the city offers enough high-end golf, amazing accommodations, and interesting eateries to keep any golf group entertained. It turns out that downtown Sacramento is a really fun place to stay. From the main roads, Sacramento’s DOCO (Downtown Commons) area doesn’t look like much. But once you get parked and

out of the car, you’ll find a city center that’s teeming with things to do. The area is anchored by the Golden 1 Center, home of the NBA’s Sacramento Kings, and surrounded by restaurants, clubs, and hotels. Overlooking the arena is where you’ll find the Kimpton Sawyer, one of Sacramento’s finest lodging options. Simply walking into the hotel lobby from the street will make you feel transported to a more upscale location. The foyer is bright, with little emphasis placed on the front desk, and more attention drawn to the restaurant and living room lounge area. It’s a perfect place to get to know fellow guests during the hotel’s nightly happy hour social. Rooms at The Sawyer are well appointed and comfortable. Each features high-end bedding, workspaces, clean and modern bathrooms, and a view of the surrounding city. One of the hotel’s highlights is the rooftop pool, an amenity that’s talked about by everyone who visits. Surrounded by private cabanas and comfortable lounge chairs,

the pool area offers views of the Golden 1 Center. It also opens on one side to Revival, The Sawyer’s hip destination bar. When events are happening at the Golden 1 Center, Revival is a tough ticket to get. With intimate seating, an excellent selection of shareable snacks, and any type of libation you could ask for, Revival is a must-try when you visit Sacramento. I highly recommend one of the bar’s delicious gin cocktails and the local cheese and charcuterie board. Amazing. After getting over the awe that accompanies your first day at The Sawyer, guests will start to notice all the details the hotel pays attention to. From extensive recycling, to eco-friendly linens and disposable products, The Sawyer works hard to be a good steward for the planet. It’s something management takes great pride in. The Sawyer is the kind of hotel that will pull you in and make it hard to leave. It was tough to walk away from the hotel’s comfort for a day of golf, but knowing that the pool was awaiting our return made for a great day and return.

THE LONG DAY

TWILIGHT ROUND

Chelan, WA

Bear Mountain Ranch

Desert Canyon

Desert Canyon is a good golf course with a fantastic amount of variety in the design and terrain. Each nine presents some great holes to enjoy with the 15th simply being one of the best in the entire Pacific Northwest. It’s easy to reach from Chelan for an afternoon round.

Your first round at Bear Mountain Ranch could be derailed by the amazing views. Nearly every hole has a view down to Lake Chelan or of the vineyards and orchards that line the hills around the lake. There are a few tricky holes, so pay attention to the GPS on your golf cart.

GETTING THERE

EAT or SEA

Depending on the amount of driving you’d like to do, there are a couple of options for getting to the Chelan area. The drive from Seattle is just over three hours and is a pretty easy drive at offpeak hours of the day. If you fly into Wenachee’s smaller airport, you’ll find yourself with a much shorter 30-45 minute drive up to Chelan and the surrounding area.

A QUICK BITE

Stormy Mountain This is the only brewery in the town of Chelan (there are others in neighboring towns) and both the beers and food are fantastic. During the season, Stormy Mountain offers live music on Friday and Saturday nights. If you stop in for lunch or dinner, the smoked brisket french dip is a sandwich that should NOT be missed.

WHERE TO STAY

Lakeside Lodge and Suites Choose from variety of accommodations, from Standard Rooms to Deluxe Suites, all well appointed with the amenities you desire. More like a resort than a hotel, Lakesdie Lodge puts the cool blue waters of Lake Chelan just a short walk from your room.

BONUS FEATURES

Slide Waters - Lake Chelan Waterpark The idea of a water park just a few hundred feet from the shores of Lake Chelan may sound like an odd idea, but it’s actually a fantastic place for families to spend the day. Slide Waters has a variety of water slides, pools, and swings, and plenty of lifeguards on duty to make sure even the youngest members of the family stay safe. Slide Waters is a family owned and operated business that understands how important time with family and friends can be.

DINNER TIME

Sorrento's Ristorante

If you’re looking for an authentic Italian meal in a setting that’ll make you feel like you’re in Tuscany, then Sorrento’s is your best bet. The only thing better than the food and views are the Italian wines produced on the surrounding estate. The Barbera is amazing.

Slide Waters operates from Memorial Day through Labor Day, offering fun through the peak travel season. Even when the skies are cloudy, water at the park is perfect for a day of fun. In addition to water attractions, Slide Waters offers a full complement of locker room facilities, cabana rentals, picnic tables, and an upper deck that offers a great view of the lake and the park. riving into Chelan, Washington is a treat, especially for wine lovers. In addition to the blue waters that greet you, the hillsides surrounding that lake are covered in vineyards ready to create every type of wine you can think of. With so many wine tasting options, it can be tough to keep track of tasting times and the kinds of wine you can expect to find. Some spots are good for just a tasting flight or glass of wine, while others offer snacks or full meals. There’s something for everyone. After visiting no fewer than a dozen vineyards and wineries, we settled on Tsillan Cellars as - far and away - the best overall experience. In addition to an incredible selection of both

PLACES TO PLAY

Bear Mountain Ranch

Chelan, WA

What started as a destination golf course has quickly become one of the most popular residential locations in the Chelan area. Golfers get the opportunity to see where some of the grapes for a handful of popular wineries are grown, just yards away from the fairways and greens. Sitting out on the shores of Lake Chelan, visitors can’t help but wonder how they could get a better birds-eye view of the area. Those who enjoy a challenging round of golf will find that Bear Mountain Ranch provides an excellent playing experience, and the most complete views of the lake and the surrounding orchards. One of the first indicators that players are in for a hilly round of golf is the requirement to take a cart out for their round. The course - especially the opening nine - has some pretty severe elevation changes from tee to green. The closing nine opens up a bit as players work their way across plateaus to the clubhouse. Course designers took great pride in having moved a minimal amount of dirt during construction, instead choosing to rely on the property’s natural contours to create a variety of

Gamble Sands

different holes and shots. One of the unique things about Bear Mountain is the number of blind shots you’ll have to hit. The first hole is a great example, with a blind shot down to the fairway before another partially-blind shot up to an elevated green. Two good shots reward players with a chance at an opening birdie and a spectacular view of Lake Chelan. Throughout the round, players will be faced with risk-reward opportunities. Those who are feeling frisky off the tee are invited to try overpowering the course, but even great shots can leave players with awkward distances into the greens. Bear Mountain Ranch is the kind of place where it pays to look closely at the yardage guide and manage your way around.

Brewster, WA

Links golf in the high desert Overlooking the Columbia River, in the high desert of North Central Washington, Gamble Sands is blessed with one of the most dramatic settings for true links golf in the world. In fact, golf course designer, David McLay Kidd described the property as the stuff that designers dream of.

golf designer dreams of, rolling sand dunes overlooking a large body of water, a developer willing to build golf just for the love of the game,” said Kidd. “No homes, no other development around, just golf on sand, golf as it was truly meant to be.”

The centerpiece of the course is currently the Sands Course. The course owners, the Gebbers family, chose Kidd as their designer because of his success with similar projects. The Scotsman came with a prestigious list of accomplishments in the world of links golf that included the famed Bandon Dunes, The Castle Course in St. Andrews and Tetherow.

The Sands course is a true links course with sandy soil, traditional fine fescue grasses, firm playing surfaces, wide fairways and massive greens.

The Sands course offers a very playable experience that weighs in at 7,169 yards from the back tees and plays to a par 72. It’s similar to some of Kidd’s earlier work at Bandon with an emphasis on having fun.

The resort is home to four golf courses: Meadows, Woodlands, Crosswater and Caldera Springs. Crosswater, named one of “America’s 100 Greatest Courses” by Golf Digest, was the home of the JELDWEN Tradition, a major championship on the Champions Tour from 2007 to 2010. Crosswater is a difficult, but fair golf course that’s the PERFECT example of a classic Northwest-style golf course. The Meadows golf course - designed by acclaimed architect John Fought starts at the main lodge and winds its way through a large section of the early resort. It’s a tight golf course, but a fun one. The Woodlands golf course, a creation of Robert Trent Jones Jr., resides in the north end of the resort. The course features wider fairways and

more water hazards, but is an excellent course for golfers of all abilities. All three of the resort’s championship courses have undergone upgrades to their greens and bunkers, making them consistently excellent regardless of the course you decide to play. Each year, the resort plays host to the Pacific Amateur Golf Classic, an individual stroke-play event that gets hundreds of players out to test their skills against the golf courses and each other. Sunriver is more than just golf, though. The resort boasts outdoor pools, tennis courts, a park with basketball courts, miniature golf and ice skating, shopping and dining, and the popular Sunriver Homeowners Association Aquatic Center (SHARC) waterpark. Those looking for a few hours away from the hustle and bustle can receive a variety of spa services at the Sage Springs Club and Spa. Sunriver Resort offers a variety of accommodations, including luxury guest rooms and suites, as well as 400 vacation rental properties. The resort has over 44,600 square feet of meeting and banquet space. The region’s primary winter attraction, Mount Bachelor ski area, is about twenty minutes away by vehicle.
