Rebel Roots Farms Peanut Butter Honey Blondies

Ingredients:

Preparation:

1 ea Rebel Roots Farms RSO 2 ea Rebel Roots Farms Funny Honey ¾ c butter, melted 1 c sugar ½ c smooth peanut butter 2 eggs 1 ½ c flour 1 tsp salt ¼ tsp baking powder ½ c honey roasted peanuts, chopped

Preheat oven to 350° F. Line an 8in square baking pan with parchment paper leaving a 2 inch overhang . (This will help with removing the baked blondies.)

Yields 16 blondies with approx. 50mg per serving.

First, infuse the peanut butter. Using a double boiler, heat the peanut butter until thin and easy to stir (about 3 min or 120°F). Bring a cup of water to a boil on the stove or in a microwave. Remove from heat. Hold the RSO by the plunger and submerse the full body of the syringe, with the cap on, into the hot water for 15 seconds. Once heated, remove the syringe from the water, and whisk the RSO into the peanut butter immediately until thoroughly combined. In a large mixing bowl, whisk butter, sugar, infused peanut butter and Funny Honey. Whisk in eggs until well combined. Using a large rubber spatula, fold in the flour, salt, and baking powder. Pour batter into baking pan and spread into a flat layer. Sprinkle chopped nuts on top and bake until edges start to become golden brown, 20-25 minutes. Let cool, then remove blondies from the pan and cut into 16 squares. Optional: top with even more Funny Honey!

For use only by adults 21 and older. Keep out of reach of children. Do not drive a motor vehicle while under the influence of marijuana.

Editor’s Note Th a nks f o r pi c k i ng u p Th e G l ass Issu e of Or e g on Le af ! Happy 4/20/20! My infatuation with glass art and culture began during my first trip to Piece of Mind in Seattle around 2006. 11 Walking through display cases of custom pieces in a time of prohibition was mind blowing. The beautiful colors, styles and technologies fascinated my young stoner mind - and since the Leaf began in 2010 - we have published an A BELOVED RIG OR PIPE annual Glass Issue to honor the culture and love for this IS LIKE AN unique art form. A beloved rig or pipe is like an old friend, trustworthy and comfortable as it delivers that sweet sensimillia. The only true functional art in the world, I love sharing the hard work of those who craft borosilicate with flame and kiln.

Today, glass culture has blown up into an accepted form of mainstream art that’s rapidly exploding in awareness and value. Custom pieces fetch hundreds of thousands of dollars and get millions of views on social media - transfixing the heady community with continuous displays of art that will get you high just looking at them. There are so many amazing artists in the region and beyond, that selecting pieces to share is both a fun and difficult process. We have some beautiful pieces spotlighted in all editions of our magazines with different artists in each - and I hope you take a look at nwleaf. com to see our complete gallery! SALES SPIKE DURING CORONAVIRUS PANDEMIC Legal Cannabis sales are spiking nationally as folks stock up on weed amid the coronavirus pandemic, according to March sales data. Sales are up in California, Colorado, Nevada, Oregon and Washington, according to Headset, a Cannabis data company. Recreational marijuana is legal in all five of those states. Sales were a whopping 75 percent higher than average in Oregon, with the spike registered on March 16, reports The Hill. The Maryland Legislature approved a bill on March 18 that would prevent almost 200,000 prior marijuana convictions from being viewed on a public database, reports Marijuana Moment. The legislation, sponsored by Democratic Del. David Moon, now heads to the desk of Republican Gov. Larry Hogan. If he signs it, the bill would make it so that convictions for marijuana possession that occurred before Oct. 1, 2014, would not be viewable on the Maryland Judiciary Case Search. Reform advocates celebrated the development, and said automatic expungements of such convictions would be included in legalization legislation they’ll be pushing for in the upcoming legislative session.\

RETAILERS RAKE IN PROFITS AS CONSUMERS LOAD-UP FOR A LOCKDOWN Cannabis retailers in Oregon and other legal states saw a notable increase in business as consumers flocked to dispensaries over the first major weekend of the U.S. COVID-19 outbreak. Toilet paper, groceries and guns weren’t the only items flying off shelves as consumers took to stockpiling quarantine goods. According to Headset Inc., a Cannabis industry analytics provider, sales were “about 75% higher” as concerns over city-wide lockdowns continued to grow. Chris Mitchem, the CEO of Diem, an Oregon dispensary, told Portland Business Journal that the company had experienced a 50% jump in delivery and a 25% increase in store sales. “It’s very fulfilling to be able to SALES WERE provide an essential service,” Mitchem “ABOUT 75% HIGHER” said. “But nobody knows how this is AS CONCERNS going to unfold and there are definitely OVER CITY-WIDE risks we’re thinking about.” LOCKDOWNS CONTINUED Those risks are something TO GROW. dispensaries around Oregon are trying to mitigate, despite Oregon retail regulations that can make it hard to adapt purchasing protocols. An executive order put forth by Governor Kate Brown prohibited social gatherings amid the global COVID-19 outbreak. Areas around the globe have implemented similar tactics to curb the spread of the highly contagious coronavirus. Governor Brown’s announcement, made on March 16, included “a statewide cancelation of all events and gatherings larger than 25 people - exempting essential locations like workplaces, grocery stores, pharmacies and retail stores.” Oregon officials, along with The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, have recommended avoiding gatherings of 10 or more people to limit exposure. As concerns over the outbreak continue to spread, experts and health officials around the globe have expressed uncertainty in how long social distancing measures will be necessary. The restrictions set in place by Gov. Brown went into effect on March 17 and will last “for at least four weeks.” Multiple event cancellations followed the order as organizers scrambled to forecast an outcome. Gatherings such as the Cultivation Classic have been put on hold and the Degenerate Flame Off (scheduled for June) organizers stopped selling tickets until further notice. If you have plans to attend a Cannabis event this month, be sure to confirm with the event organizers. OLCC MAKES TEMPORARY CHANGES TO MARIJUANA WORKERS’ PERMIT PROCESS

The OLCC has loosened regulations for Marijuana Worker Permits, in a move to expand employer access to employees. The temporary change is effective March 18 through April 30 and is in direct response to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Workers that have submitted a permit test and application won’t have to wait for OLCC approval to begin work at licensed facilities, a decision that could help companies keep doors open as staff call in sick and choose to self-isolate.

THE HEMP INDUSTRY Visualize a map of the U.S. with an overlay highlighting where Cannabis is grown and where corn, wheat and soybeans are grown.

Sibling Rivalry

oregonlEAF.COM

Hemp and Cannabis are like fraternal twins - closely related but not exactly the same. These are siblings who need to learn how to get along with one another. As both Cannabis and hemp become legal across the country, they’re bound to butt heads. It’s in everyone’s best interest to avoid a cattle versus sheep, Hatfields against McCoys clash among farmers with different objectives. There are two words that stop both hemp and Cannabis farmers in their tracks: pollen drift. Farmers growing female plants outdoors don’t want them pollinated by male plants upwind. This is especially true where THC-rich Cannabis has historically been grown, like California. Hemp farmers growing for the CBD market want to grow female plants outside, but don’t want pollen drift either. Meanwhile, industrial hemp cultivation is legal nationwide except in Idaho, South Dakota and Mississippi. Before you shout “buffer zone” - nix any idea that three, five or even 10 miles prevents pollen from drifting into neighboring farms. Nope. Not even close. I live in Seattle and we’ve enjoyed spectacular sunsets the last few summers thanks to forest fires as far away as Canada and California. If smoke can travel literally hundreds of miles, so can pollen. That’s its job. Some hemp farmers want seeds and it takes pollen to make them. This includes commercial seed farmers, those growing hemp for grain and fiber, not to mention anyone planting regular non-feminized seeds. The grain and fiber markets alone will scale to Big Ag proportions and tens of thousands of acres will be planted. Over time, hemp will replace a chunk of the corn, wheat and soy now being grown in the farm belt.

APR. 2020

There’s very little overlap between them and this is how the fraternal twins can get along. Cannabis gets first dibs where it’s being grown now. Hemp farmers are given priority in the Dakotas, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, Nebraska and Kansas where outdoor Cannabis is rare, if not illegal. These potentially new hemp farmers already have big tracts of land, large farm machines and out buildings. Hemp for fiber or grain can be grown much like wheat or corn is, compared to growing flower for CBD extraction. Wheat or corn to hemp is a lateral transition. Good fences make good neighbors. Hemp and Cannabis farmers need to get to know one another. An open dialogue can avert potential conflicts down the road and both sides can share and learn from each other. There’s no reason to lock horns with your neighbors. America’s traditional bread basket will grow acres upon acres of industrial hemp. Hemp for paper, hempcrete, textiles - all of the things we’ve all been waiting for. Hemp food will soon be common in grocery stores and restaurants. Hemp pellets for wood stoves will be sold without fanfare. That hemp toilet paper people have been joking about for years? It’s going to happen, and when it does it has to be big in order to be profitable. Existing farms will grow large amounts of hemp like any other bulk agricultural commodity. When hemp expands, today’s existing agricultural infrastructure will need to adapt and catch up. Hemp will find its way into 4-H, farm stands, state fairs and ag schools. Miss Hemp beauty pageants will pop up in rural America. Will progressive cultural and lifestyle changes be far behind? Hemp and Cannabis, the fraternal twins, will learn to get along - perhaps even like each other. Squabbles aside, neither is going away. Each twin will have their side of the room, their own bunk bed. Hemp farmers and Cannabis farmers have a lot in common, and each will benefit when the other thrives.

DEGENERATE FLAME OFF COORDINATOR

LIBBY GOETTELMAN

ALL MAJOR BUSINESSES AND FESTIVALS have that one exceptional individual that holds everything together - the glue so to speak. That figure for both Northstar Glassworks and Degenerate Flame Off is Libby Goettelman. With roots tied deep into the glass community, Libby has been attending DFO since 2010 and now runs the coordination for the event. Whenever you see her at the next outing or festival, make sure to show her some gratitude for helping make this event a continuous hit!

APR. 2020

“GLASSBLOWING IS SUCH A YOUNG ART STILL AND IT HAS SO MUCH ROOM TO GROW.” HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN WORKING FOR NORTHSTAR GLASSWORKS? CAN YOU DESCRIBE YOUR EXPERIENCE WORKING THERE? I have been working

for Northstar Glassworks for six years. I have never worked for a company for this duration of time before. Working at Northstar is my dream job and somehow it all fell into place for me after college. One of the things I love most about working there is the family-like atmosphere. WHY DOES DFO HOLD SUCH A SIGNIFICANT AND SPECIAL PLACE IN YOUR HEART? I have been going to the DFO since the second year it was put on,

before I ever even worked for Northstar. I was just into the glass scene and had a few friends that were artists. I go to a lot of festivals and this was unlike anything I had attended before. When the previous coordinator moved and was not going to do the event anymore, I pleaded my case about the love for this event for a long time before Abe gave me the chance to put the event back on. I know it holds a special place for many people in the community, for so many different reasons. WHAT ARE SOME OF THE INFLUENTIAL FACTORS THAT MAKE AN EVENT OF THIS CALIBER POSSIBLE EVERY YEAR? We are agrassroots festival that runs on

a shoestring budget and relies on the support of the community. It really takes every single person that walks through the gate to put the event on. From the sponsors to the people that buy tickets, to the artists that showcase their skills and all of the volunteers that give their time. They are what makes this event what it is each year. WHERE DO YOU SEE THE GLASS INDUSTRY GOING IN 2020 AND BEYOND?

Only growing with national legalization, as well as the amount of glassblowers and collectors that are joining the industry every year. Glassblowing is such a young art still and it has so much room to grow. WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR HOBBIES OUTSIDE THE GLASS INDUSTRY? I try to see and groove to as much live music as possible. Many times this includes traveling to see some of my favorite artists.

A Stoner Owner is a Cannabis business owner who has a relationship with the plant. We want to buy and smoke Cannabis from companies that care about their products, employees and the plant. You wouldn’t buy food from a restaurant where the cooks don’t eat in the kitchen, so why buy corporate weed grown by a company only concerned with profits? Stoner Owner approval means a company cares, and we love weed grown with care. Look for the Stoner Owner stamp when purchasing fine Cannabis, and let’s retake our culture and reshape a stigma by honoring those who grow, process and sell the best Cannabis possible.

OREGON LEAF BUDTENDER OF THE MONTH

SoleFiumefreddo “I LOVE AN UPLIFTING CULTIVAR TO EASE THE DAY AND SOMETHING MELLOW FOR THE EVENING.”

HOW DI D YOU F I R ST E X P E R I E N C E CAN NAB I S ? I first experienced Cannabis with a trusted pal on a Halloween night when I had just turned 18. Ironically, it was the night before I started my first day as a preschool teacher. I saw the world in a different perspective, looking at plants and trees a bit differently and felt more connected to the Earth. I remember feeling like there were waves in my body (probably the euphoria that we all like so much). After that, I would say off the clock use helped me de-stress after managing eight to 12 toddlers every day! HOW LO NG HAV E YOU B E E N A B U D TE N DE R ? WHAT ’ S YOU R FAVO R I TE PART O F T H E J O B ? Collectively, I’ve been a budtender for two-and-a-half years. At the end of 2015, I began my journey helping to change a medical shop into a rec shop, then I worked in a processing facility as an educator. I researched and trained other budtenders and colleagues about the endocannabinoid system, the plant and how all these compounds work within our bodies. With my collective experience within the industry, I love to help people find what they’re after! I love to comb through books with them, explore options and break down the plant metaphorically and physically speaking. I also love all of the smells of Cannabis. FAVORITE WAY TO USE CANNABIS? I love joints! That community feeling that they give is so important. I also love edibles, but especially drinkables like Magic’s Ginger Beer. It’s simply the best! Edibles and tinctures help my overactive brain mellow out enough so I can get some sleep.

LOCATED IN the historic St. John’s neighborhood, Portland’s Best Buds is a store with an iconic look, complete with a large mural covering the front of the store. They’ve been in the game for quite a while, too - and it shows. The store stocks many of Oregon’s most tried-and-true Cannabis brands, and some new favorites as well! Their socially responsible approach to Cannabis means a lot of things: a safe environment for everyone, caring about the products they stock and of course, extra care with customer service. Our budtender of the month is certainly a big part of what makes this shop so special.

APR. 2020

FAVO R I TE ST RAI N S , E F F EC TS AN D TE R P E N E P RO F I LE S ? I love Durban Poison, Mimosa and Cherry Pie. I love an uplifting cultivar to ease the day and something mellow for the evening. I enjoy Cannabis that can help me focus and create. I really dig fruity, floral and earthy terpenes. Terpinolene is my favorite.

HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT THE CURRENT TESTING REQUIREMENTS BY THE OLCC?

I think that we need to add a mandate of the top three terpenes with every Certificate of Analysis, without the extra fees to growers. Looking at what science is telling us, we need to pay more attention to the terpenes in order to accurately convey the potential effects. I find it can be very difficult reducing a complex matrix into a simple defined effect when relaying just THC and CBD percentages. It’s particularly important in order to help those who use Cannabis medicinally, like my mom who used Cannabis to get off opioids. She battles fibromyalgia and finds great relief with specific cultivars/terpene profiles, like Purple Trainwreck. WHAT SETS YOUR SHOP APART?

We are so friendly here! We approach with joy and treat everyone with respect. We give back and honor our community as best we can, maintaining a warm environment and attitude. Honestly, this is one of the happiest places I’ve ever worked, and our managers Dave and Trent are the root of that. They respect and encourage us to do better for ourselves, and in turn, we do. WHAT ARE SOME OF YOU R HOBBIES/INTERESTS OUTSIDE THE CANNABIS INDUSTRY? In my

off time, I help facilitate social bicycle fun with my club Corvidae BC. I like to run my little doggo, Roo, alongside my bike - or I just bebop around town to my favorite dive bars. My fiancé, Lex, and I frequent the St. John’s Beer Porch for food, friends and fire, and we love catching movies at the St. John’s Cinema, whether they be spooky or comic book related. I really enjoy live music, exploring the planet and socializing. Art projects help my creative spark, especially if they involve paint and the flowers I’ve been collecting.

Chalice Farms is everything we need right now Spring is here and we'll take this as an opportuni-

ty to celebrate — for a whole month! Cannabis culturists look forward to a specific holiday every year (and have since 1990). You may or may not know the history, but essentially, students at San Rafael High School, in Marin County, CA would meet at 4:20 PM to smoke by a wall, later becoming known as “Waldos.” These were not the typical stereotype for pot smokers — and were motivated athletes, honor students, and filmmakers.

Grateful Dead fans (“Deadheads”) however, were linked more with the popularization of the 420 holiday, as they distributed flyers around Oakland, CA to encourage people to smoke on April 20 at 4:20 PM, bringing folks together – not just literally in the local area, but all over the world, one day each year, at the same time. Genius! Much like the mindset in the early days, Chalice Farms, one of Oregon’s top cannabis operators, is all about togetherness and community. While the world is going through unpredictably challenging times right now with required distancing, Chalice Farms is launching a daily digital wellness initiative!

Order Chalice Farms Fruit Chews now at chalicefarms.com/delivery and get them delivered to your doorstep! Do not operate a vehicle or machinery under the influence of this drug. Keep out of reach of children. For use only by adults twenty-one years of age and older.

This aims to continue to support and encourage coming together (digitally), at a time when we quite honestly need it the most. From recipes and at-home workouts, to educational seminars from industry experts and self-care tips, the initiative will center around seven key pillars, including:

01 02 03 04 05 06 07

THINK WELL with attitude and perspective EAT WELL with energy and nutrition AGE WELL with health and recovery LOVE WELL with relations and connections BE WELL with stress and balance DREAM WELL with sleep and respite LIVE WELL with focus and clarity

Starting Tuesday, April 7, join Chalice Farms' movement to identify how cannabis can be implemented across all health and wellness topics. Here's some more great news: during this time, they'll also be introducing their new Chalice Chews product collection! Delicious, vegan-friendly, fruity chews infused with cannabis, made to support all your lifestyle needs — mental, physical, and emotional health — whether you're a new or experienced user, they've got you covered with their chewables: sleep, calm, recovery, balance, and energy. Bonus: Chalice Farms' popular dispensaries are open to service your needs and are taking special precautions to ensure the health and safety of their staff and customers. They recently launched curbside pickup and delivery service too, so you can stay home and stay healthy! L A G LA S S B LOW E R EXTRAORDINAIRE

APR. 2020

SIBELLE AND I met at a Cannabis industry event in Santa Rosa while I was working for a Humboldt County based farm in mid-2019. When I saw her, I honestly couldn’t take my eyes off her. She was the most badass woman I had seen all evening, effortlessly twisting tubes of glass in the darkness of the night. I could tell immediately \ by the beauty of her work and her skill in unexpected conditions that she was awe-inspiring, and I would have to share her story. Walking into her new studio I was greeted by the warm glow of the morning LA sun, as well as her personal art display with sketches of Sailor Moon and other original characters, not to mention the glass creations made using her signature networking technique.

“I feel like I meet a lot of glassblowers who were pursuing one path and glass just came out and was like - pay attention to me now.” Congratulations on your new space! It’s been a long time coming, yeah? It has. Well, I’ve been working at Neptune Glassworks for the past five years. So, I’ve been doing production glassblowing there. It’s right down the street from here, which kind of sealed us in, because there are a few studios on that block. It’s safe over here, but I still have my distance and I can be a little bit more creative and allow my feminine energy to blossom. The space over there is so masculine, it’s basically like walking into a Mad Max warehouse. Motorcycles, steel, wood, all heavy materials. Me being the only glassblower there for so long, I sort of adapted to the space. I’ve been in Uri’s (her employer) footprint this whole time. He’s been very generous in sharing his equipment with me and allowing me to grow within that space. It just got to a point now where my interests are too much. When clients come to see me, I want to be able to say, “Everything you see in here is my work,” - and it’s total ownership. I’m still over there three days a week, which is awesome. As much as I want to be fully on my own, financially it’s a little bit difficult, especially in LA. How did you get started in the industry? I was a cashier at Pacific Art Glass after recently moving to LA. I knew I needed to meet glass people somehow, so I was handing my cards out to everyone. I had my studio set up in my bedroom at the time, with my box fan in the window (not recommended) and I was flameworking little jewelry. It was really crazy. Uri came in to buy glass and I gave him my card, and ended up checking out his studio. When I showed him how similar our work was, he realized he needed to hire me. He didn’t know exactly what my experience levels were, but he knew I could do the networking technique. It was a risk to join the team, but I was like, “Yeah! Let’s do it!” So, with your degree in Illustration Design, it’s safe to say you have a very strong background in art and creation. Was glass your first medium? No. It’s always by accident. I feel like I meet a lot of glassblowers who were pursuing one path and glass just came out and was like pay attention to me now! For instance, Uri was in engineering before, and was feeling unsure about his path. Someone eventually invited him to help them blow glass. All of a sudden, his brain flipped and he had to do it. For myself, I just had to take a class in college that was outside of my major and it had to be an art class. I thought, “Oh, Glass Casting 101, it should be easy enough.” The instructor who was teaching the class, Sayaka Suziki, eventually became my first mentor. She really pushed

me hard, and I was really interested in investigating this material. I didn’t start out blowing glass at all, the first couple years of my glass career were all sculptural casting. So I would just make molds, put cold glass in a mold, and melt it into the mold to be solid glass - strictly sculptural. It wasn’t until within my degree, that I wanted to major in glass as well as illustration. I was lucky enough to take classes from some really amazing flameworkers, like Emilio Santini, who was an Italian maestro his last semester, and Christopher McElroy - who goes by 2-Stroke - who is a very big pipemaker. I didn’t realize at the time how lucky I was to have these instructors. Virginia Commonwealth University doesn’t even have a flameworking department anymore. What was the big push for you to move into your own studio? With the encouragement from social media, I have such a positive following and people are so welcoming. I’ve actually never felt any discrimination for being a woman in the industry. I don’t know if it’s because of my attitude or dedication, or that I just know how to deal with guys after being in this manly warehouse for five years. Who knows, but I also just don’t think about it. I just want to put my shit on the walls or draw anime pictures. I just want to be alone and play. I missed the creativity. Here I have all my colors and my patterns. Now I can really make it personal. Do you make mostly functional pieces or do you still make jewelry? I want to more! Because of necessity, people who hit me up want smoking goods, so I keep making those. With more time and space, I want to make more prototypes. We first met when you were doing a glassblowing performance – do you travel frequently to show off your skills? I’m down to do it for whomever. I did a demo for the first year of Glass Vegas. We do demos at the big studio whenever we have parties. That trained me to not be afraid to perform in front of other people. In a way, [Neptune Glassworks] was sort of a big training camp for me. How heavy can you work, how much can you endure, how much pressure can you perform under? I’m super grateful for this whole experience. I’m taking everything that I learned from that and applying it to my own. What is your biggest influence in terms of style or external sources of inspiration? I gather my inspiration from fantasy, comic books, video games and anime. Anything cute or ethereal. I vibe with ancient cultures and mythology.

There’s so many deities. I have such a huge library of inspiration. I made an Isis piece recently, as well as a Shiva pipe. All of my influences are either other illustrators - James Jean is huge for me, [Alphonse] Mucha, and [Gustav] Klimt - or anything that’s swirly and out of this world. This might seem a bit abstract, but I am very inspired by movement and intention. You might see this in anime - there’s always this very fluid movement happening with characters. There’s a lot of buildup in action and tension. It’s the moment before the marble rolls off the table - the tension where it’s not on one or the other surface. Embodying that feeling. I want to learn how to implement that into my work.” Do you ever come up with ideas for your art while you’re high? Totally! I don’t smoke a lot, but when I do it’s usually before bed. And also waking up in the morning. Well, I love working out while I’m high, or taking a shower when I’m high. And then I’ll lay in bed and look through books, read comics, pet my cat. All of this together. Especially depending on the type of weed I’m smoking. I actually thrive on indicas, and I’ll think about body movement a lot. Sometimes I’ll get high and pull out the yoga mat, doing weird stretches. I’ll try to learn poses that I see on Instagram - that’s usually how I roll when I’m in the zone. Is there a favorite piece that you’ve created? Yes! It’s a tiger and it has six boobs. It has a huge halo. I wanted to play with not just the female form - but wanted it to have that power of motherly, feminine energy. It’s a sculpture. I wanted to make it like a deity, so it has the holy halo, and it’s just epic. I put so much gold on it, she’s mother goddess. That piece right now is my favorite. I would secretly be sad if someone bought it. If you could collaborate with any glass artist, who would you choose right now? It’s so hard to pick! I really want to collaborate with this guy - he goes by Avatar (@avatarglass). I don’t know if it’s going to happen. I don’t usually collaborate with other artists, but he is ridiculous in his skill level. He does this similar thing that I do. Building universes or worlds in this fantasy realm. I photoshopped one of my characters into a space-scape, and then I saw he photoshopped a spaceship that he made into space. I feel like it would be super cool. ENVIRONMENT Oregrown has truly built an incredible space in their newly opened SE Portland home. When I stepped into the shop, my first thought was Patagonia meets craft Cannabis. Beautiful display cases line the floors and an illuminated Pax symbol is one of the focal points of the space. Clothing racks filled with Oregrown’s extensive line of apparel fill the perimeter of the store. The vision for this space was brought to life by Chief Brand Officer Christina, as she wanted to create an old school Portland, rootsy vibe. Oregrown considers all of their stores flagships, as they aim to represent the state of Oregon’s love of the outdoors and craft Cannabis.

PRODUCT SELECTION

34

The vast array of products available was impressive. Almost every Pax pod cartridge was available, including some tasty in-house collaborations, and an extensive flower menu featuring some of the state’s best growers, including: Evans Creek Farms, Eugreen Farms, Nelson & Co. and Heroes of the Farm, amongst many others. Various consistencies of in-house live resin filled the shelves, as well as other top notch solvent and solventless extracts from Echo Electuary and Happy Cabbage Farms. The edible selection is just as extensive. Wyld, Wana, Junk, Laurie and Mary Janes, and Mr. Moxey’s are just a few of the top notch edible makers featured.

HISTORY AND VALUES The original Oregrown location in Bend first opened back in 2015 as a medical shop. The brand and store has grown immensely since then, from expanding their brand and endorsing local athletes, to distributing their single source products all across the state. One of the principles Oregrown Co-Founder/Owner Aviv Hadar holds dearest is being a beacon for quality, as they provide a clean, consciously designed space that curates some of the best Oregon has to offer. The vertically integrated farm and lab are as organic and clean as it gets - cultivating and processing classic, yet flavorful strains.

BUDTENDERS AND SPECIALS The budtenders working when I stopped in were incredibly friendly and helpful. As soon as I walked in the door, I was greeted by just about everyone in the shop. I was informed about the daily special and was given recommendations on some of their favorite products. Oregrown is currently offering an amazing gesture/ special amidst the chaos of the COVID-19 pandemic : free delivery and 15% off to those 60+ years of age. All Oregrown locations have daily specials, which include vape Monday, tasty Tuesday, dab Wednesday, flower Friday and top shelf Sunday.

QUICK HIT Oregrown has one of the coolest dispensary layouts in Oregon. Originally designed by JHL Design, the shop has a topographic feel that almost mimics the terrain of central Oregon. Friendly, knowledgeable and patient staff - combined with an immense selection of high quality products - makes Oregrown’s newly opened Portland flagship a must stop for Cannabis connoisseurs. DESCHUTESRIVER DURBANPOISONLIVERESIN I HAVEN’T had much experience with Pax pods before, so I was excited to dig into this Durban Poison live resin - grown and extracted in-house. The pod/cartridge doubles as the mouthpiece and easily slides into the top of the battery. There are a few default heat settings on the battery itself, however, pairing it with the Pax app via bluetooth allows consumers to change the temperature by degree. As soon as I took a pull, my mouth was coated in lemony and pine forward terpenes, classic Durban Poison. The effects were incredibly euphoric and uplifting, one of the last true sativas. This is a great option for consumers on-the-go who need to stay active and alert while medicating. $36/0.5g | 73.9% THC, 4.5% CBD

NOWN’L8TER COLDFILTEREDNECTAR

OWNERS AVIV & CHRISSY HADAR

NOW N’ L8TER is a flavorful cross of Blue Power and Candyland. The blueberry profile dominates the nose up front, followed by a doughy, earthy funk. The sugar wax like consistency packs a ton of flavor without being saturated in terpenes, making it smoother and easier to handle. After sharing a few dabs with a friend, I felt rather relaxed and anxiety free. The flavor profile is all blueberry and grape, definitely reminiscent of a Now and Later or grape Hi-Chew. The effects from the Candyland take the stage front and center by providing a warming body effect that is great for managing pain, quelling anxiety, and falling and staying asleep. $36/g, 78.3% THC

During our visit, my eyes were immediately drawn to their wide variety of Bo’s Nose Knows, Nelson and Co, Happy Cabbage and Echo Electuary. Rooted deep into the local culture, Shane and General Manager Adam Deering have been blowing glass together for over 25 years. Borosilicate art holds a significant place in Amazon Organics’ team’s hearts and has kept them in the lifestyle that much more. nce every couple of years, a strain comes along that captures the zeitgeist of the time. AK47. Northern Lights. GG #4. GSC. Blue Dream. The classics. Runtz may have some work to do before it lives amongst the legends, but if you pay attention to the world of Cannabis genetics, this fruity and loud Zkittles x Gelato cross may wind up a modern day classic. We hadn’t come across any Runtz in Oregon until getting our hands on this phenomenal indoor flower from Resin Ranchers. As far as we can tell, they’re the first to bring it to the state’s recreational market. Flaunting trichomes like powdered sugar against a purple backdrop, these carefully trimmed flowers almost immediately engulf a RUNTZ DRAWS room with the sweet scents SMOOTH, of fruit and pine when you SHOWCASING crack open the jar. You might find yourself trying to decide between watching a movie, going for a hike or playing guitar, and before you know it, you’ve spent 20 minutes just staring at the wall. All-in-all, the indoor wizards at Resin Ranchers have a hit on their hands - it makes sense that this is currently the most sought-after flower in their lineup. As owner Spencer Brillanceau-Lewis says, “It’s a looker. It’s a smeller. It’s a smoker. It’s a taster.” We’re inclined to agree. If you’re lucky enough to come across some, pick up an eighth and find out why.

Essential Terminology for the Educated smoker Banger Beads Small quartz/glass/ruby balls that rotate around in a quartz banger while taking a dab. The banger beads serve to balance the distribution of your concentrate when you’re dabbing as they help retain heat, often increasing the overall amount of smoke provided. This ensures that you get the most out of each dab.

Bubbler Coming in several different shapes and designs including kettle, hammer, sidecar and inline, bubblers are smaller sized water pipes. Overall, they are more like a regular dry pipe than a water pipe, although bubblers have a bowl.

Fumed When glass artists place metals like gold, platinum and silver in between their torch flame and the glass they are working with, the high temperature of the flame then vaporizes the metals. The releasing fumes are then carried by the flame to the glass to make remarkable, iridescent designs that are often then encased with more clear glass.

Quartz Banger A term for a dab nail made out of quartz crystal. On a dab rig, the nail is the part accountable for heating the concentrate to the formation of vapor. To ensure maximum flavor, after each dab make sure to dip a cotton swab in a small amount of isopropyl alcohol, then proceed to wipe your dab out of your banger until it looks new.

Rettichello A configuration of two opposing spirals layered on one another.

Recycler A common style of concentrate water pipe that is constructed to recycle the smoke in a secondary chamber and bring it in a loop that goes back through the original chamber. This helps cool and refine the smoke, creating a smoother dab overall.

Sherlock A traditional glass pipe modeled after the pipe smoked by the iconic Sherlock Holmes. Modern day borosilicate artists have adopted this pipe style and have since gone on to put their spin on this classic design.

the airflow in a certain direction. When used with banger beads, your dab and beads are sent into a vortex motion, often sending a vibrating sensation throughout the dab rig.

Heady A high-end glass pipe consisting of complicated glass techniques, often exceeding prices of four or five figures. Not to say that you can’t find a nice pipe cheaper than that, but most of the time, nice pipes aren’t cheap!

EXTRA-GALACTIC

The Story of

nathan miers The world of glass art has continued to evolve and grow in popularity as Cannabis legalization has swept across most of the nation. Artists from around the world have found unique lanes and levels of complexity within the glass art spectrum. Here, American made glass pipes range in price from the hundreds to the tens of thousands of dollars, truly entering the world of fine art.

46

n oregonlEAF.COM

athan Miers - better known as ‘N8’ - has positioned himself in the fine art category of functional glass art. N8 grew up in Washington state surrounded by creatives and he found Cannabis at an early age living on the West Coast. The community and friendships built through Cannabis happened quickly for N8. When he first tried Cannabis around his junior year in high school, Miers remembers getting the severe munchies and downing a whole bag of frozen strawberries, recalling the experience with a grin. Nathan was an energetic kid and found that Cannabis helped to reduce his anxiety and allowed him to focus more, leading him to do well in school. He ended up going to college for graphic design, and actually began acquiring college credits while still in high school. Breaking the old school

APR. 2020

traditional Cannabis consumer stereotype, N8 went to college and that’s where he acquired his first real piece of heady glass - when he ordered himself a custom pipe. Nathan remembered paying around $60 for the custom bowl and when he received it, he thought to himself, “This is cool, I think I can do this and bet I could do it even better.” And so began the journey into his adventures in glass blowing. N8 began blowing glass in 2002 after a local artist who had a garage studio setup asked him if he wanted to give it a try. He began to make pendants and small items, listening to electronic music and teaching himself to blow glass while the studio owner was on vacation. Around that time is also when N8 started to keep a journal of his future goals. He had an early desire to one day have a shared creative studio space with like-minded creatives. That dream would later come to complete fruition in the form of the now legendary Everdream Studio in Evergreen, Colorado. Soon after, within six months of blowing glass, he decided to leave college and was working as a glass blower full-time, selling pipes to local shops. 2006 marked the time period where he became more interested in

the heady market - marbles, jewelry and other things non-bong related that were made from glass. “Being creative was and still is the main goal,” said Miers. The ability to create and make a living as an artist was another early goal for Nathan that he has stayed true to during his career. In 2010, Miers decided to make the move from California to Colorado full-time to work at the Shackmansion in Denver. During this time he worked with now legendary artists and partners in Everdream Studio, including Adam G and others. 2010 was also the year he decided to devote his creative work exclusively to the space work and galaxy glass designs he had begun working on in Oregon. In addition, this is when he began to expand his thinking of what might be possible for a glass pipe, its acceptability to the mainstream and overall cultural acceptance. Instead of the glass pipe being a negative clandestine item, to N8 it was a beautiful piece of art meant to be shared, enjoyed and smoked. He remembers showing his grandmother one of his pipes, and even being a non-smoker, she immediately took to the artwork. It’s a moment in N8’s career he remembers fondly. When asked about the current state of Cannabis legalization and its impact on

the culture and community of glass art, N8 mentioned, “Legalization paved the way for the entire functional glass art community to come out of the shadows after Operation Pipedreams. Combine legalization with social media and it has allowed the community to flourish and advance at a much more rapid rate than ever before.” N8 moved to Colorado in 2010 and by 2015 he was well known across the country as one of the best glass artists in the world - making insane space scenes, taking his collectors on a deep voyage into his glass universe. Asked about how he views his own style and work, he mentioned, “I like to think of myself as a painter. Some glass artists create these complex sculptures, while I view my work as more of a canvas to create the depth and space scenes I include in my work.” Miers made his first space pipe in 2006 in Oregon. Others had made spacey glass before, but in 2008 Miers - while looking over his outdoor grow in California - thought to himself after a day on the production grind, “I don’t want to keep making what everyone else is making.” He gazed up at the stars overlooking his California grow and remembered the space pipe in Oregon, and decided to start experimenting with his now world famous space techniques and IG murrine series. When it comes to remaining creative and finding new inspiration nearly 20 years into his glass blowing career, N8 is “striving to evolve as an artist and as a craftsman. My brain is always seeking out new ways to creatively express myself.” N8 and the fellow artists that now operate Everdream Studio have become well known for throwing some of the largest and most elegant functional glass art shows in the world. The annually ‘canceled’ Wook Show, Heaterz and Heazter90210 that wrapped up last year in Beverly Hills are all examples of how the glass art community is thriving, with the artwork and attitude of Nathan Miers being a large part of that culture. N8 recently had a new showcase of work on the East Coast at the well known StokedCT Gallery in Connecticut, and will be having another major show in 2020 in California later this year. Work by Nathan Miers can be seen on his Instagram at @Nathan_Miers and at galleries around the country.

wo friends, Ryan Stahly and Matt Rosado, established Torched Illusions in 2010. Their first location is located off of Tualatin Valley Highway in Beaverton. Ever since the duo has taken over this spot, they continue to improve on the interior layout. “It’s all about the flow, and the experience of the flow,” Matt said. “You can’t have the entrance be too cramped, and people need space to walk around the displays.”

Detail and cleanliness are important in the shop. Products are lined up neatly and accordingly on custom black slat-board shelves on the wall. These range from your typical clear glass and glass accessories, to e-liquid, papers and other products. They also have KAWS figures on display and KokoNugz (crispy treats that look like nugs) available for purchase. The middle of the store has three separate showcases - this is where the good stuff is displayed. “We are focused on building lasting relationships with local glass blowers,” Matt said. Torched Illusions is a strong supporter of the local Oregon glass scene and culture. You can continually find their booth sponsoring Degenerate Flame Off, an annual glass blowing competition based in Oregon. The pieces they bring out on display to sell are next level. Some of the artists that they work with include Darby, Salt, Inkz, Carsten, Annealed Innovations and Niko Cray.

Pieces from these artists and more are displayed in the center of the store in these showcases. Salt’s solo piece from DFO 2018 is currently located at their Beaverton shop! With time comes growth, and eventually Torched Illusions opened up their second location in Tigard. This location is more of a traditional smoke shop, offering affordable glass, e-liquid, papers, etc. That said, if you are looking for their finest heady pieces on display, check out their Beaverton location. All in all, Torched Illusions is the type of shop that we need more of. As the glass scene becomes increasingly recognized as a legitimate and profitable form of art, we need more shops to connect and establish relationships with local glassblowers. This support does wonders for our local community and evolves the art into uncharted territories - revealing exceptional glass and revolutionary talent along the way.

HOW ARTISTS ARE PUSHING THE ENVELOPE

BORO INNOVATIONS Functional glass art is constantly evolving, with artists continuing to push the boundaries every day, creating new concepts and designs that catch collectors’ eyes time and time again. Since there are so many styles that can be touched on, I’ll focus on a few of my favorites and how they fit into the glass world today. blue & purple Harold Cooney x Mike Philpot

terps with millie Kaj Beck x Mike Philpot

rainbow switchbacks Cowboy x Mike Philpot

TERPS SKULL Hugh Glass x Mike Philpot

One of my favorite innovations in the boro world has to be the spinner jet downstem in straight tubes. Traditionally, many tubes were, and still are, crafted with a downstem that has slits for aeration on both sides, even creating percolation. The spinner jet downstem features slits exclusively on one side, creating a whirlpool effect in the chamber that creates more drag. Local glass artist Mike Philpot has pioneered this style, with his spinner jet tubes that have a distinctive chug. Boss Ross Glass, another artist also out of Eugene, creates similar style stems in his longer necked straight tubes. Another revolution in the glass world that has been gaining popularity recently is the need and use for directional carb caps. Many dabbers are gravitating towards flat bottom bangers so they can utilize ruby/glass spinner balls in order to lengthen their dab. Bubble caps are a useful option to manually direct the oil around the nail, while spinner caps create a whirlpool like airflow that has the ability to spin the glass beads incredibly fast. The idea is to create as much surface area as possible, allowing the dab to be fully vaporized at a low temperature. The cold working of boro glass is another interesting process that has been rather popular lately. Cold working refers to a variety of techniques that are implemented after the glass has cooled, which includes polishing, engraving, etching and sandblasting. Primarily used to change the shape and texture of glass, cold working provides glass artists with the ability to play around with aesthetic and function, as it pertains to their design.

Ramen noodles are pure comfort. I was introduced to them by my son Nick when he was in college. Clearly a simple package of ramen needs no directions, but I have ramped up the ingredients and added a little canna-love. When you mix the cannaoil with sesame oil, a totally awesome flavor combination emerges. Check your fridge - there is bound to be something there to add to your soup. I like to get the packages of ramen noodles that don’t have MSG in the ingredients. It makes me feel weird and it’s pretty simple to avoid. If you feel the same way and can’t find the noodles without it, don’t use the flavor packet and add some tamari sauce, and use chicken or vegetable broth instead of water. Make it a bigger meal by adding tofu, shrimp or chicken.

In a small bowl combine the tomato, pepper, scallion, parsley, radish and avocado. Add the oils, salt and pepper and lemon juice and toss well. Chill.

INSTRUCTIONS In a small skillet over medium-low heat, heat the oils. Add the garlic and cherry tomatoes and sauté for three to four minutes. Add the spinach and sauté until wilted, three to four minutes. Stir in the crushed pepper, and add salt and pepper to taste.

Place beaten egg in a shallow bowl. On a plate combine the breadcrumbs, parmesan and parsley.

Be sure to make the salsa before you cook the chicken. You can even make it the night before, just add the avocado as close to dinner as possible. You want the contrast of the hot chicken and the cool vegetable topping.

In a medium skillet heat the canola oil. Dip chicken breast in the egg then into the breadcrumb mixture and place carefully in the skillet. Cook the chicken breast in the oil until crisp, about four minutes/side. Transfer to a plate and top with the vegetable mixture.

¼ CUP SHREDDED CARROTS

Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Cook the pasta according to the package directions. When tender, drain and place in a bowl.

Bucatini is a thick spaghetti-like pasta that is extremely satisfying. If it’s not your cup of tea, feel free to use any other shape. In summertime an angel hair would be delightful. Again the ingredients can be changed to suit your taste. Adding shrimp or chicken could be a nice way to go.

Add the sauce to the pasta and sprinkle with freshly grated parmesan, or add a couple of tablespoons of goat cheese and some fresh or frozen peas. Awesome flavor combination.

EDIBLE OF THE MONTH

ATING BACK to the good old OMMP days, Toro Ma is one of the longest standing Cannabis producers in the state - starting their small worker owned company in 2013. At the time, their team cultivated all of the Cannabis that was used to make the very first Cannabis infused dark chocolate available for sale in Oregon. Owner Justin Logan then went on to create the first high CBD edible in the world. Fast forward to today and Justin and his team now offer a few new innovative products, including a Cannabis balm, Baptisté, and our edible of the month, the Hella Burnt Caramel. By utilizing a FECO method of extraction, it is guaranteed that all of their goods are infused with the highest array of cannabinoid and terpenoid content originally shown by the flower.

CARAMELS “AFTER GETTING MYSELF SETTLED INTO THE COUCH, I EXPERIENCED A WAVE OF RELAXATION AND CALMNESS WASH OVER ME AS ALL MY WORRIES FROM THE DAY MELTED AWAY.” TO RO-MA.COM | @TORO.M A

APR. 2020

Toro Ma works closely with their partner farms Cannassentials, Alter Farms, Liontree Farms and Green Source Gardens, transparently bringing you products that you can feel good consuming - knowing that each delicious bite you take is pure and has been ethically sourced. All of Toro Ma’s products are 100% organic, vegan and fair trade. What more can you ask for? To top it off, the entire package is both compostable and recyclable. Opening up the caramel reveals a lovely, dark and rich color - which the combination of coconut sugar/nectar/oil and FECO - can be responsible for. With an exceptionally unique and lip smacking flavor that keeps you coming back for more, it’s hard not to devour the entire treat in one sitting. That said, one caramel holds a total of 50mg of THC from the FECO, so we recommend starting with the 5mg serving size and working your way up, depending on tolerance. With a higher threshold than most, I cut half of the Cannassentials Sour Diesel FECO infused caramel and went to town. Unlike most caramels, Toro Ma’s Hella Burnt delectable delights do not stick to your teeth whatsoever, and make an ideal choice for those who have a weaker jaw, like me. After getting myself settled into the couch, I experienced a wave of relaxation and calmness wash over me as all my worries from the day melted away. The FECO provides a full body effect that is unparalleled to any other extract on the market. Unlike other edibles that are infused with extracts such as distillate, the 25mg dosage I consumed went a lot further than a 25mg dosage of a distillate infused product would - by a long shot. Whether you prefer edibles or topicals, Toro Ma is sure to have an option available that you can purchase with confidence, and even a little pride. We can all do our part by reducing waste and consuming consciously, and Toro Ma is an excellent example of a business you can support with those goals in mind.

ARCHIVE PORTLAND LEMONCANE & MOONBOW HASH PROCESSED by DAMMIT BOBBY FLOWER GROWN by BURNSIDE GARDEN COLLECTIVE PRODUCED by ARCHIVE PORTLAND

MOONBOW #112

90/120U HASH ROSIN Moonbow is a unique cross of the ever popular Zkittles and Do-Si-Dos. The rosin is a light yellow color and boasts a potent terpene profile that is heavily reminiscent of the Do-Si-Dos lineage. This particular phenotype, in flower form, has a funky and earthy nose complemented by vibrant dark purple calyxes. After taking and sharing a few dabs with colleagues and friends, I was rather impressed with the distinct flavor profiles I was detecting from each parent strain. The funk and earthiness from the Do-Si-Dos hit my palate first, followed by the sweet, almost stone fruit flavor from the Zkittles lineage. For me, this cross of uplifting and relaxing strains proves to be the perfect synergistic effect for a functional, yet pain-free work day.

Chris, the lead solventless processor for Burnside Garden Collective and Archive Portland, has been honing his skills for a couple years and is now one of the top solventless producers in the Pacific Northwest. The team and I were fortunate enough to sample this limited Lemoncane 90u full melt for review and when I obtained it, the heads of resin were rather fresh out of the freezer - still separated and easy to move about the jar. Within 10 minutes, the entire gram was completely greased over, transforming into more of a pull-n-snap consistency. I pressed the melt out between some unbleached parchment paper and took the dab at a much lower temperature. The flavor was outstanding with a mix of sour lemons and earthy fuel - a perfect combination of terpene profiles. MILK MAKEUP Kush LipBalm

“I LOVE HOW HYDRATING THIS PRODUCT IS, AND THAT IT CAN BE WORN AS A BASE-LAYER UNDER LIPSTICK.” PACKAGING & APPEARANCE

I am in love with Milk Makeup’s clean packaging. The Kush balm comes in a sleek white tube with a magnetic top, so you don’t have to worry about it popping off and drying out the balm. You’ll feel fancy when applying it and I love the sturdy design. I just wish Milk would sell refills so I didn’t have to throw away a beautiful, magnetised container. AROMA

The balm is mildly scented with notes of grassy rosemary, peppermint and hemp with a touch of mango for sweetness and citrus for balance. APPLICATION

The recipe of shea, cocoa and mango butters coat and instantly absorb to soften lips and improve texture. I love how hydrating this product is, and that it can be worn as a base-layer under lipstick. The formula is laced with a microscopic shimmer that amps up the shine. It’s not sticky and glides easily over the lips, leaving you with a semi-glossy pout. The balm feels more buttery upon application than waxy, but it still has the same hydration power without the weight.

EFFECTS

After a few days of consistent use, I visibly noticed my lips were hydrated without constant re-application. The hemp seed oil and mango butter help your lips naturally manage hydration, without drying (like Carmex) and leaving you dependant on a product. I love the fun green color and pop of shimmer, not to mention how cute the packaging is. The formula is moisturizing without becoming sticky, and this product has earned itself a permanent place in my lip balm hall of fame. I N M Y B O O K , H E M P P R O D U C T S F I N A L LY H I T T H E MAINSTREAM AFTER MILK MAKEUP CAME OUT WITH M Y FAV O R I T E S H I M M E R Y A N D G R E E N K U S H L I P B A L M .

Antioxidant-rich jojoba and olive oils help protect against free radicals and environmental stressors. While the hemp seed oil provides anti-inflammatory benefits, the naturally tinted formula goes on green but blends in clear with a pop of shimmer. This product is vegan and cruelty-free, leaving your lips hydrated without constant re-application. If you are looking for a trusted, luxury hemp lip balm - look no further!

APR. 2020

VALUE

The Green Dragon Kush lip balm is pricey at $16 a pop, but this splurge item is so worth it. I justify the cost because I will use it all the time and can take it anywhere.

terped-out Cannabis. MY CHOICE for hard seltzer was easy - I can tell you I sure as hell wasn’t going to pick White Claw - as my favorite cider producer in the northwest, Two Towns Cidery located in Corvallis, has been producing their SeekOut hard seltzer brand for awhile now. SeekOut is a great option because it is made with real fruit, and thus, it doesn’t quite taste like, say, a La Croix. The flavors are more prominent and, dare I say, natural because of the use of real ingredients. I chose the Raspberry/Meyer Lemon flavor, which was perfect to pair with the sweet citrus skunk of Wicked Kind’s excellent Orange MAC. This is some truly amazing flower, with notes of limonene and skunk - and a perfect cure. The purity of this Cannabis pairs perfectly with the all-natural flavors in this seltzer. What’s extra awesome about drinking a hard seltzer is something that isn’t all that obvious when pairing alcohol and Cannabis: dehydration. Alcohol dehydrates the body, and Cannabis can produce temporary dehydration as well. While this hard seltzer does contain alcohol, it surely doesn’t feel as heavy as other alcoholic beverages.

It’s not that they hate company, but as medical Cannabis patients in the high risk group, they’re well aware that the COVID-19 coronavirus outbreak that has been growing around the Seattle area could kill them. Both have decided it’s safer to stock up on necessities and shelter in place for the time being, rather than risk exposure. But the spread of the disease is not just a risk to them. And those in the Cannabis industry are also warily watching cases spread, worried about the larger impacts. “I’m in the 10 percent kill rate,” said Jeter, a medical Cannabis provider and activist in Washington who has rheumatoid arthritis and other complications. “I have my Analytical 360 pick up box outside, and people can get what they need there and leave the money for me - although I’m going to have to go to Paypal I think because money can also spread disease.” The all-cash nature of the Cannabis industry is putting dispensaries on high alert. Cash is dirty stuff - often containing fecal matter and even cocaine in small amounts - and it’s just as easy for something like COVID-19 to hitch a ride on it and spread. That’s why High End Market Place, a dispensary in Vancouver, Washington, has hand sanitizer by every register and a new policy of wiping every surface down several times a day with cleaner, according to Gareth Kautz, one of the owners of the store. “We are spending a lot of time wiping down surfaces all over - and the menus as well,” Kautz said. “Good thing we stocked up on cleaning products before this all started to heat up.” He’s also telling employees that are sick to stay home, even if it means short-staffing. But he’s worried that if the virus spreads rapidly, he may not have enough staff available to keep the shop open. “If you get an outbreak, a small shop like this, we’re in trouble,” he said. His cash counting machine has also become a scary device, because when it counts it blows dust and germs from the cash into the air. In Seattle, the effect of spreading cases has had a greater impact on Cannabis dispensaries. Bob Ramstad, owner of OZ. dispensary in the Fremont district, said as schools and businesses started to shut down, so did traffic to his shop. But in the last day or two things shifted a bit, and now he’s seeing some people come in to stock up in case they get locked in their homes. “It’s been weird,” Ramstad said Friday. “In general our sales during this outbreak have been down quite a bit - 20 to 30 percent. But then I think we saw some panic buying “Don’t pass joints, yesterday. Some delivery services don’t pass bowls. for food aren’t functioning right now, and I think people are noticUse common sense.” ing that and wondering ‘what if I’m stuck in my house for three weeks Cat Jeter | Cannabis Activist with no weed?’”

Ramstad is also disinfecting everything in his shop as often as possible - including ATMs and door handles. He has a solid supply of Cannabis products as well, but there’s a potential looming packaging shortage coming on the grower side because of the economic shutdown in China, where much of that packaging is made, Ramstad noted. “We have vendors that haven’t been able to get their packaging because of the situation in China,” he said. “In some cases, where the laws in Washington changed on packaging at the start of January, some companies designed new packaging for the new year - but now with the China shutdown, they’re still waiting for that to come in.” Chris Bell of Doghouse Cannabis in Vancouver said his grow has seen some shipments slowed from China, but he worked things out with the company’s packaging supplier overseas to limit the delays. “I was worried out of the gate that any products coming from outside the U.S. might be shut down,” Bell said. “Packaging could be a major hold up for other growers as well. Many of them get packaging from China because the same materials are cost prohibitive in the United States.” China is one of the largest global suppliers of lighting supplies used in the Cannabis industry, and while that shortage won’t have a huge impact on already existing grows, it could impact grows across the country trying to set up. “A ton of stuff comes from China,” Bell said. “Even if a particular brand is selling a product in the U.S., a lot of companies have switched to outsourcing components to China.” Doghouse is also changing the way it allows sick time, making it easier for workers to call in sick during the outbreak, because if the disease spreads among his workers like High End Market Place, he would also have to shut down completely. “I just don’t want anybody coming in sick right now,” Bell said. MacRae, who owns the data analysis firm Straight Line Analytics, which has worked on Cannabis testing issues in Washington, said he has been carefully looking at coronavirus statistics out of China and across the globe. This disease scares him, he said, because the lack of available testing in the U.S. means it has likely already spread. And as cases grow, health systems in various areas are likely to be overwhelmed. “One problem is that mild cases are actually pretty dangerous because they go out and spread the disease instead of staying home,” MacRae said. “That has me worried. Even with SARS I didn’t lock myself in the house for a week, but this one - Washington is going to be the guinea pig of this outbreak for the rest of the country.” MacRae lives in between the two major outbreak spots in the Seattle area, and he said many of the other medical Cannabis patients he knows are also planning to hunker down and hope this threat passes. Most of the industry events in the next two months in his area have also already been cancelled. Jeter suggested that Cannabis patients looking to stock up and shelter in place might want to consider stocking up on edibles or FECO drops, because they can relieve body aches and give you a health boost. “My advice if you catch this thing - don’t smoke, don’t vaporize. You shouldn’t do any of that,” Jeter said. “If you microdose with whole plant medicine, though, it can boost your immune system. Also, don’t pass joints, don’t pass bowls. Use common sense. Huge numbers of us are going to catch this, but many people will be just fine. The danger with this is for those of us who are elderly, immunocompromised or have lung problems. For us, this could really go south quickly.”

Try to share your beer with just about anyone these days and they’ll thanklessly grimace at your unsanitary gesture. You may as well have just mauled a garlic seasoned smelt melt and then offered them a French Kiss. “Germs are microscopic,” they think to themselves. “How can I be certain I won’t catch a cold sore?” Or perpetuate a pandemic. If it’s a fancy cocktail in a martini glass, a polite person may reach for the nearest straw to dip and taste from, or maybe even find an untouched side of the rim to sip, but someone would have to be pretty hammered to plant their lips onto the open-ended bottle of brewski that’s still glistening from your last tug. And to be quite honest, the person who impulsively follows your swallow is not necessarily someone you want to be sharing DNA with, either. It’s a hyper-prudent social climate we live in. These are tenuous times. The rules have changed. Offer up a dab, however, and no one blinks an eye. Or a bong hit, or a spliff, or a pipe, or a jay, or a gravity rip - it just doesn’t matter so long as it’s marijuana. And I believe that it has nothing to do with the fact that Cannabis is medicine, because I’ve never returned home with a bottle of Nyquil that didn’t come with a washable plastic measuring cup attached to the lid. But the last time I bought a vape cart, there was no removable sanitary rubber for the tip. So, why is it that when offering someone your drink, people get grossed out? Yet when it’s a puff, they respond with delight? I think I know the answer. Because we inherently trust Cannabis. So, it makes sense that we also trust the user. With booze it is the complete opposite.
