Lieutenant Governor’s Greeting:

Hey Division 7! I hope you are all doing great and your 2021 is off to a better start than 2020. My year is going well, but I’m a little disappointed that no one has asked about a shout-out for college commitments yet. While I personally have not committed, I have an interview with Boston University’s medical school this month for its Seven Year Accelerated Medical Program. With the start of a new year, we are approaching the start of a new service year. The Key Club service year officially starts and ends in March, so there is a lot to do by March 31st. While there will be more detailed articles throughout the remainder of the newsletter, here is a quick summary of this month’s focuses. Planning for club elections should begin this month in order to ensure officers are elected by LTC. Work on awards applications should also be conducted so your club can obtain the honors it deserves at the conference. The dues deadline may have passed, but you can still submit dues throughout the month with no late penalty. With that being said, enjoy February Break and keep up the great work! We’ll start diving into preparations for the end of this service year and start of the next one right after the break ends. As always, feel free to reach out about anything. Warmly, Matt Friedman

Service Spotlight:

Hewlett Key Club

Hewlett High School’s Key Club hosted a Double Good Popcorn Fundraiser through January 25-29. In only four days we made a whopping total of $10,324! This fundraiser allows members to virtually share a personalized link to family members, friends, and members of the community, to buy an assortment of popcorn in all kinds of different flavors. This was such a success because the fundraiser was 100% online, which made it covid-friendly. Of the total profit, Key Club received 50% back from the company, and the company takes the responsibility of delivering the popcorn to the customers' doorsteps. The website provided fun and unique flavors such as Waddle you do for a cookie? And Queso Fire, along with so many others! The proceeds from our fundraiser will be going to the International Thirst Project. This aims to bring safe drinking water to communities in need. They establish wells so the communities selected will be guaranteed safe drinking water from now on. We highly recommend signing up for this fundraiser! It was simple to conduct, while also providing delicious treats to its consumers. - Rachel Kshnoz

LtG Election Recap:

Division 7 held an election to select the next Lt. Governor on Friday, January 15 at 7 PM. We had a great turnout with at least one member from every school, so I am confident that the results truly reflect the wishes of the division at large. Both candidates delivered 2 minute speeches explaining their qualifications for the position before responding to questions from members for 5 minutes. Representatives from each club in the House of

Delegates then voted and selected Zakkiyya Fraser from Valley Stream Central High School as our next LtG! Zakkiyya will take over the reins on April 1. If you’re having trouble coming up with a date for club elections, that is a good point to aim for. Until then, you can always reach out to me with any questions. I’ll also be sticking around for a bit after my term ends to help Zakkiyya get settled in.

Congratulations to our New Lt. Governor!

NYDKC Projects:

District Project: We selected Project Hope to be our District Project this year. This organization “addresses the world’s greatest public health challenges, transform[s] lives and uplift[s] communities.” In the recent months, Project Hope has worked to help combat the Covid-19 pandemic. It also provides general medical aid to resolve health challenges around the world caused by a lack of access to care. By partnering with local healthcare practices and local officials, Project Hope ensures that adequate care is provided, and it also respects national sovereignty along with local customs and culture. If you are thinking of an organization to support with a service project, consider Project Hope. It’s a great organization that helps people both in the US and around the world. You can help by holding fundraisers or holding a service event with a member of the Project Hope Speakers Bureau to raise awareness. You can find more info here: https://www.projecthope.org/ways-to-help/get-involved/

Governor’s Project: C anines for Disabled Kids (CDK) is this service year’s Governor’s Project, meaning it is endorsed by the New York District. This organization’s mission is to increase “independence for children with disabilities and their families by promoting service dog partnerships, understanding and awareness throughout the community.” It provides service dogs to disabled children- at no cost to families- in order to boost their quality of life Supporting CDK through fundraisers or service projects will help provide a priceless gift to a disabled child: his or her own service dog. Find out more here: h ttps://caninesforkids.org/

New York Kiwanis:

In addition to the Governor’s Project and District Project, numerous other groups are endorsed for Key Clubs in New York by Kiwanis. The New York District of Kiwanis runs three main charities: P ediatric Lyme Disease Foundation, Kamp Kiwanis, and P ediatric Trauma Center. ● While Kamp Kiwanis did not hold sessions this summer due to the Covid-19 Pandemic, it is hoping to restart activity for the 2020-2021 summer. You can still help the organization prepare for this and make it extra special for those who missed out on camp this year by fundraising or hosting a service project to lend a hand. ● Insurance does not generally cover Lyme Disease, so the Pediatric Lyme Disease Foundation was created to help families pay for the treatment of children with it. The prevalence of ticks in New York leads to elevated Lyme Disease rates, so this program is especially important in our state. ● Kiwanis also sponsors multiple trauma centers to help provide medical care for children throughout New York State. These help provide low cost, high quality care to families across the state. You can help a local center out through a joint service project raising awareness or a fundraiser.

International Partners:

Nickelodeon is one Key Club’s international partners. Key Club partnered with Nickelodeon because of its major campaigns regarding children’s health. Its Worldwide Day of Play program reinforces the idea that the world should be more active, and the company hosts numerous events across the world to get kids active on this day. Nickelodeon also initiated the Get Dirty Campaign to educate kids, families, and teachers about ways to protect the planet. Facilitating these projects with Key Club service projects will help many people become more active and teach people the importance of caring for the Earth. Another one of Key Club International’s Cause Partners is UNICEF. This is the only branch of the United Nations dedicated exclusively to helping children. It cooperates with other UN branches, governments, and NGOs to provide for children’s needs in more than 150 developing countries. This is accomplished through community-based services in primary health care, basic education and safe water and sanitation. You can help raise awareness for the organization through service projects and host fundraisers to support its events.
