Lieutenant Governor’s Greeting: Hey Division Seven! We’ve made it to the end of the service year! It’s been a wild ride, but I’m so proud of everything that the clubs in our division have accomplished. If you’re ever doubting your ability to restart even stronger with in-person activities next school year, remember per angusta ad augusta… from hardship to triumph (side note for everyone at Oceanside, I’m likely including that phrase in my valedictorian speech because latin is great). The amount of work each and every one of you put into Key Club this year is truly remarkable. From transitioning to virtual meetings and hosting virtual elections to finding new ways to connect with your community, you continually proved your flexibility and a dedication to service. Take a moment to celebrate all the progress and achievements made this year, you’ve earned it. I would also like to thank my divisional board for all the work they put in this year. My executive assistants, Alex and Katrina, have been instrumental in helping set up divisional meetings and our service projects throughout the year. Chloe, the divisional secretary, played a vital role in keeping track of each club’s status and my communications with you all. Last but not least, my editor, Wren, has done a fantastic job taking the articles I write and turning them into a nice, clean newsletter each month. I couldn’t have made it as a LtG without them. Thank you again to all of you for making my term as your Lieutenant Governor fantastic. Best of luck to you and your clubs throughout the next service year; I know you will all be able to keep growing! Best, Matt Friedman

Service Spotlight: Long Beach Key Club For the past few weeks, the Long Beach High School Key Club has been working on a project with the Fashion Revolution organization. Many do not know it, but the fashion industry creates many environmental and human rights issues. Due to fast fashion, the fashion industry is the second largest polluting industry in the world after the oil industry. When it comes to those who make clothing, they often work in unsafe conditions and are paid very little. For this project, our club has been sending emails to big brands through the Fashion Revolution website to demand more transparency in the fashion industry. Though sending these emails may seem like a small action, the more concern that a brand receives, the more likely they are to make a change. As we have been having virtual meetings this year, this project has been a fun way that our members can make a difference on a global level from home.

-Julia Silverberg, Long Beach President

Awards Booklet: Every year at LTC, clubs receive awards for their fantastic achievements throughout the service year. Although this year’s LTC has been delayed and moved to a virtual format, there will still be awards, and the deadline for applications is rapidly approaching. Most awards must be completed by Friday, March 19. Both club level and individual awards exist, so make sure you discuss applications with your club board. I would love to see Division 7 well represented when awards are presented. You’ve all earned a chance at the recognition. You can find the awards booklet using the link below. This contains the requirements for each application as well as the portals for online applications. Good Luck! Link: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1H3AhPrz0hsytp4JTRNattnbgPnQgizXR/vie w

LtG Election: Division 7 held an election to select the next Lt. Governor on Friday, January 15 at 7 PM. We had a great turnout with at least one member from every school, so I am confident that the results truly reflect the wishes of the division at large. Both candidates delivered 2 minute speeches explaining their qualifications for the position before responding to questions from members for 5 minutes. Representatives from each club in the House of Delegates then voted and selected Zakkiyya Fraser from Valley Stream Central High School as our next LtG! Zakkiyya will take over the reins on April 1 (coming up soon!). That also means this is the last newsletter of the service year, but I’m confident Zakkiyya will keep growing Division 7 even stronger than it already is. If you’re having trouble coming up with a date for club elections, April 1 is a good point to aim for. Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you need any help setting up virtual elections.

11

Service and Fundraising Goals: This is our progress as of March 10, 2021. Let’s keep working on those goals by filling out MRFs and FRFs!

12

Service Ideas: Work with the UN: Looking for a great service project to dedicate your club to? Have your members help out the United Nations! The UN has a myriad of virtual service opportunities that you can participate in. These projects are entirely online and can be done on your own time. Sign up to help with this link: https://www.onlinevolunteering.org/en/opportunities Projects include: - Translating documents - Writing articles about UN projects - Creating social media campaigns - Reviewing annual report drafts - Conducting citizen science research - Online fundraising for COVID-19 emergency response

Tutor Children: As the school year progresses and schools are switching between hybrid, all virtual, and all in person systems, younger students can get left behind. One school-oriented service project idea is to tutor children in your district. Your Key Club can set up a virtual tutoring service (using platforms like Zoom, Google Meets, and Microsoft Teams) to help elementary and middle school students keep up academically and provide them with support that may be lacking in online school. Make sure that your school district’s administration approves your tutoring service; cooperation with other organizations in your school, like National Honor Society, can facilitate this approval. By tutoring local students, you have an immediate positive impact on your local community.

13

Color-A-Smile: This organization seeks to bring smiles to people’s faces through artwork. People of all talent abilities can help by drawing free-art pictures or coloring in designed pages. Once the art is complete, you can send it to Color-A-Smile and it will be distributed to seniors in assisted living facilities or military personnel abroad. This can be a quick service event conducted during a club meeting or a long-term project, virtually or in-person; it’s up to you. Full instructions and submission info are located on the organization’s website: https://colorasmile.org/

14

Fundraising Ideas: Charity Miles: Now that winter is (hopefully) over and it’s warming up, it's a perfect time to share the Charity Miles fundraiser with your members! You can introduce members to the project in less than 10 minutes, and this will continually benefit a charity with long-term donations. Make sure to have members download the Charity Miles app from the app store or use the link below. Then, have the members join the Division 7 Team and choose a charity. Once members are set up, let them know they can raise money just by walking ($0.25/mile) or biking ($0.10/miles). I will be keeping track of our division’s overall progress and filling out an FRF each month for the team. You can also create your own team to track progress for MRFs (there is no limit to how many teams one can be on, and miles count on all teams you are a member of). This year, the division has traveled over 25,000 miles raising more than $6,250! Let’s keep up the good work! Link: https://miles.app.link/XAJnrsPEa8

In addition to fundraising projects that require constant actions from your members, there are a few passive projects that can have a large impact. The following ideas allow members to continually contribute just by going about their daily life once they are set up. One example is Ecosia. This functions similarly to Google, and it can even be added to Chrome. However, the company will plant a tree after fulfilling search requests allowing you to help the environment. This is an extremely easy way to have a positive impact on the world, and it tracks the number of trees you’ve helped plant in the top right (www.ecosia.org).

Another similar search engine is SearchScene. The company behind the engine donates 95% of its ad revenue to charities fighting climate change, and you can select the recipient while searching. As with ecosia, this lets you fundraise while progressing through daily life (searchscene.com).

NYDKC Projects: District Project: We selected Project Hope to be our District Project this year. This organization “addresses the world’s greatest public health challenges, transform[s] lives and uplift[s] communities.” In the recent months, Project Hope has worked to help combat the Covid-19 pandemic. It also provides general medical aid to resolve health challenges around the world caused by a lack of access to care. By partnering with local healthcare practices and local officials, Project Hope ensures that adequate care is provided, and it also respects national sovereignty along with local customs and culture. If you are thinking of an organization to support with a service project, consider Project Hope. It’s a great organization that helps people both in the US and around the world. You can help by holding fundraisers or holding a service event with a member of the Project Hope Speakers Bureau to raise awareness. You can find more info here: https://www.projecthope.org/ways-to-help/get-involved/

Governor’s Project: Canines for Disabled Kids (CDK) is this service year’s Governor’s Project, meaning it is endorsed by the New York District. This organization’s mission is to increase “independence for children with disabilities and their families by promoting service dog partnerships, understanding and awareness throughout the community.” It provides service dogs to disabled children- at no cost to families- in order to boost their quality of life Supporting CDK through fundraisers or service projects will help provide a priceless gift to a disabled child: his or her own service dog. Find out more here: https://caninesforkids.org/

17

New York Kiwanis: In addition to the Governor’s Project and District Project, numerous other groups are endorsed for Key Clubs in New York by Kiwanis. The New York District of Kiwanis runs three main charities: Pediatric Lyme Disease Foundation, Kamp Kiwanis, and Pediatric Trauma Center. ● While Kamp Kiwanis did not hold sessions this summer due to the Covid-19 Pandemic, it is hoping to restart activity for the 2020-2021 summer. You can still help the organization prepare for this and make it extra special for those who missed out on camp this year by fundraising or hosting a service project to lend a hand. ● Insurance does not generally cover Lyme Disease, so the Pediatric Lyme Disease Foundation was created to help families pay for the treatment of children with it. The prevalence of ticks in New York leads to elevated Lyme Disease rates, so this program is especially important in our state. ● Kiwanis also sponsors multiple trauma centers to help provide medical care for children throughout New York State. These help provide low cost, high quality care to families across the state. You can help a local center out through a joint service project raising awareness or a fundraiser.

18

International Partners: Nickelodeon is one Key Club’s international partners. Key Club partnered with Nickelodeon because of its major campaigns regarding children’s health. Its Worldwide Day of Play program reinforces the idea that the world should be more active, and the company hosts numerous events across the world to get kids active on this day. Nickelodeon also initiated the Get Dirty Campaign to educate kids, families, and teachers about ways to protect the planet. Facilitating these projects with Key Club service projects will help many people become more active and teach people the importance of caring for the Earth.

Another one of Key Club International’s Cause Partners is UNICEF. This is the only branch of the United Nations dedicated exclusively to helping children. It cooperates with other UN branches, governments, and NGOs to provide for children’s needs in more than 150 developing countries. This is accomplished through community-based services in primary health care, basic education and safe water and sanitation. You can help raise awareness for the organization through service projects and host fundraisers to support its events.
