When we started the Lookbook over three years ago, we jumped in feet first to something I had been thinking about for years. We were just so excited to start. Alex and I created the first 16 page launch issue. From there, Brianna and I have spearheaded the lookbook, planning, idea building, content creating, researching, writing, and laying out each and every page.
NOT E FROM THE
Editor
I start my letter from the editor many times before something sticks. I have ideas, thoughts and stories I feel might be right, but as I start to write, if there isn’t a flow, I’ll walk away and pause. More thoughts come and go, words stop and start, until finally I have something that feels like it has some momentum. We have to start somewhere, don’t we? It’s a fact of life. Whether a task, a chore, an assignment, or project, and especially a new endeavour, starting is the only way to get moving. Starting prompts a forward motion down a path. We might u-turn, detour, or turn down a different road along the way. We encounter red lights, yield signs and flashing green arrows, which all provide guidance as well. Navigating these roads is also a huge part of the creative process.
03
Spring 2021
Since the start, we’ve been very curious about what NFDI Style would look like in print, so after the completion of our winter issue, we ordered a copy. To our delight, it looked great! Having a hard copy of this creative platform has prompted us to look at our Lookbook a little differently, and to make some improvements and adjustments, not only from a visual perspective online, but also in the event we might one day go to print. You may notice a slightly different approach to the layouts; more photos, and more informative text, in areas such as our travel feature on Montreal (pg. 47), and our seasonal cooking feature on rhubarb (pg. 59). A fun fact about Kerstin from our office, she’s an English major, and has been graciously editing our Lookbook for over a year. We’re thrilled to share she’ll now be contributing from a writing perspective too! You’ll find some of her words in the above mentioned articles. We remain committed to offer you, our loyal readers, a fresh dose of inspiration, and now there’ll be more information for you to sink into. Spring is often looked upon as a new beginning. The dormancy of winter now comes back to life, with newness, a fresh start, and rebirth. We hope this issue provides inspiration to try something new, start a project, or simply learn. We’d love for you to take in the entire Lookbook, and on the final pages you’ll get a sneak peek into our summer issue! We’re so happy to have you with us, following along this creative journey.

IF NF DI WERE A [pow-der room] noun
Powder Room
(in a private home) a bathroom, especially one which does not have a bathtub or shower and is intended for use by guests. Get to know team NFDI by way of our personal design aesthetics. This issue, we’ve each designed a POWDER ROOM to reflect our style, experience, wishes and dreams of what this compact space might look like if we had the opportunity to design one for ourselves.
WHY IS IT CALLED A POWDER ROOM? Dating back to the 1700’s, pre indoor plumbing, a powder room was exactly that, a room where one would powder their wig, a status symbol of the times. The name stuck as indoor plumbing became common. A powder room is located conveniently on the main floor of a home, easily accessible by guests to avoid the need to venture into the private areas of the house. Consisting of a toilet and a sink, powder rooms are often without windows, and considered the jewel of the home, with special attention paid to the design and decor. Whether you need to use the loo, or simply powder your nose, we hope you are inspired by our designs!

BUNNY LOVE I struggled with this one, as I have a powder room I currently love, however if I could do it over again, I’d set the tone with Hunt Slonem’s iconic bunny wallpaper in gold. I wanted to incorporate this into our recent renovation but it didn’t work out, and a powder room would be the perfect place. I’d pair it with bold, marble checkered floor tile, and a European style vanity mixed with a classic shiplap wall painted in Farrow & Ball Off-Black for extra drama. I also love the idea of playing with scale, so I selected an antique mini mirror flanked with large floral shaped sconces. The powder room is surely the space to have a little fun, and push design boundaries, just as I have here!

LA BELLE L AV I am a fair weather, flower garden loving girl, which is why this springlike wallpaper was the first thing I selected for my powder room. While I appreciate many styles, I am intrinsically drawn to all things pretty. Feminine, refined, curvilinear, floral, and delicate elements speak to me. I abandoned restraint and used them all in my girly sanctuary!

CAREFREE COLOUR My dream powder room is a bright, fun space with a play on texture, pattern and colour. Pairing modern details and unexpected finishes, such as chunky terrazzo with a classic parquet floor, provides tension and a juxtaposition of styles. Using wall mounted plumbing and accessories lifts fixtures from the floor, offering visual space and allowing the finishes to be the focal point.

BAÑO DE R O B E RT O My husband Roberto was the inspiration for my powder room. I wanted it to have a fun yet sophisticated look and feel. I used the yellow wallpaper as my starting point, inspired by Roberto’s love of yellow, which is based on his Ecuadorian roots. Roberto was born in Ecuador, and he associates yellow with the Ecuadorian flag and the National soccer team. The lion accessory makes me think of Roberto - king of his kingdom, with a loud roar but also the biggest heart and adoration for his family and friends. A candle adds warmth and scent to the space. I selected one from Calgary company Milk Jar because Roberto loves candles, and this is one of his favorite brands.

he heart and soul of our designs are built on a foundation of getting to know our clients. Establishing a trust and understanding is a critical part of the early stages of our role in bringing homes to life. This project was a little different, in fact so much so, we’ve still never met this family in person. A few years back, we had the opportunity to work alongside the Property Brothers. We were assigned a home, and other than a few inspiration images and key points to consider, we didn’t know much about the family we were designing for. On the flip side, they didn’t know much about us either. Talk about a blind date, and the ultimate measure of trust. We’re a collaborative group. We enjoy client interaction, and building relationships. This project was seen through to completion without any of this, yet the outcome was as though we had been working closely together from the start. Call it kismet!

A note
FROM OUR CLIENT
We feel like the renovation has really brightened our home & enriched the enjoyment we get from our home. As soon as you enter the house, you notice the custom dining and kitchen area with beautiful blue & wood tones. The space is open, fresh & inviting! Before the renovation, it was dark and compartmentalized, now we feel like it reflects more of who we are and our love for entertaining. My love language is through cooking for others and this stunning kitchen allows me to serve course after course while enjoying the company of our guests. The banquette is our favourite part of the house! It makes every meal feel special, like our own personal culinary destination. Whether a large family gathering or an intimate date night at home, the light fixtures and velour bench make for a luxurious dining atmosphere! Even if it’s just scrambled eggs! Nyla’s design team has perfectly balanced the warmth of our family’s personality with the modern concepts that we adore! We couldn’t be more grateful to Nyla and her talented team. This renovation is close to our hearts and the relationship that has been established with Nyla beyond the renovation has been invaluable. We are beyond grateful for the attention to detail, care and quality of the renovation. But truly, it is the heart beyond the design that has moved us the most. Thank you, Nyla. We adore our home and love the compliments we receive whenever we have company!

HOW TO:
PROPAGAT E
Plants
Propagation is a way to grow new plants from healthy, flourishing existing plants. Whether you’d like to grow more for yourself, share with friends or even give as a gift, this process is a great way to multiply the types of plants you currently have and love. The process is not only simple, but also quite lovely and visually appealing. Here, we share the water propagation method for Aroid plants.
37
Editorial Feature
WHAT YOU’LL NEED: • An array of healthy plants • Clear jars, variety of sizes (narrow neck preferable) • Clean scissors, gardening clippers or a sharp knife
NOTE: In general, the best time to propagate is during the plants growing season (Spring - Summer/Fall)

44
PILEA PLANT The Pilea, also known as the “Chinese Money Plant” is a low maintenance species. You may need to play around with locating this addition, as it prefers a moderate amount of light. Allow for the top 2-3” of soil to dry out between waterings.
45
Editorial Feature
2. Place in a small glass vial. Make sure the node is in the water. Watch the roots grow! 3. Change water once a week. 4. Once the roots are a few inches long you can pot the cutting in soil. 5. Place in indirect light while propagating. *Alternately, pilea are known to produce baby plantlets. These can grow from the bottom of the main stem of the plant, or pop up randomly from underneath the soil, and can be replanted into a separate pot.
1. Look for a node where the base of the stem has branched off another stem, and cut below this node.
The propagating process can take up to 4-6 weeks, and ideally the roots should be at least 1” long or longer in order to plant successfully. To plant, use potting mix, room temperature water, and place in bright, indirect sunlight for optimal growth. N OT E : propagated plants will eventually die if left in water for too long, as they won’t receive all the nutrients they require to flourish without soil.
CONGRATULATIONS! YOU’VE CREATED A NEW PLANT! NFD I Style

MONT REAL, One of the oldest cities in North America, Montreal
offers a “close to home” European feeling with it’s old meets new architecture, cobblestone streets and charming cafes. The city normally anticipates over 11 million tourists each year, but it has been hit hard by the pandemic, and was in lockdown for the majority of 2020. I had the privilege of visiting Montreal a few years ago, and loved my time there. I have looked forward to going back, revisiting places I love, and experiencing things I haven’t yet. At this time of reduced travel, let’s explore Montreal from the comfort of our Bergeres chairs. Sit back, be inspired, and I hope one day you’ll not only visit, but explore this incredible place.

RHUBARB Celebrate spring with the taste of rhubarb! This French style jam is made with only three ingredients and no pectin, meaning it’s free of preservatives. Perfect on toast, muffins, biscuits or even crackers, it’s subtle, yet tangy taste is sure to delight your taste buds!
Jam
I N G R E D I E N TS : • 2.2 Pounds of Rhubarb Stalks (Organic is best) • 3 1/2 Cups White Sugar • Juice from 1 Lemon
Rhubarb Tips
Rhubarb is one of the first plants to appear in the spring garden. While technically a vegetable, the tart, antioxidant rich edible stalks are commonly used as a fruit in recipes. Known for its beautiful pinkish-red hue, rhubarb also comes in a green variety. Find it at your local farmer’s market, supermarket, or even chopped and bagged in the freezer aisle. Or try your hand at growing it yourself!
P R O PAG AT I O N : This hardy perennial thrives in cooler conditions. Plant it in fertile, well drained soil in a sunny location. Reaching 3-4’ in diameter and 2-3’ in height, rhubarb plants are big so provide enough garden space. Allow the plant to establish by waiting until the 2nd or 3rd year to harvest. To avoid stressing the plant, don’t pick all the stalks at once . Remove flowers so the plant can devote its energy to producing stalks, and divide plants every few years. C AU T I O N S : The leaves contain oxalic acid, which is poisonous to humans and pets. Do not ingest them. Be sure to choose only firm stalks, as those made soft or limp from a frost may contain oxalic acid which has drained down from the leaves. TO H A R V E S T : Twist & pull the stalks from the plant, and cut off the leaves. Store the stalks in the fridge for up to 5 days. The leaves can be composted. Excess rhubarb freezes well. TO F R E E Z E : Wash rhubarb, pat dry, and cut into uniform 1/2”-1” pieces before freezing. You don’t even need to thaw it before adding to most recipes!

NFDI Recipe
T IP: add the lemon slices for extra natural pectin. 2. Place rhubarb, sugar and lemon juice into a large pot and bring to a boil. 3. Let simmer on light - medium heat, stirring occasionally, until the jam has set. You can test this two ways: a. Use a candy thermometer to confirm the temperature is at 220 Fahrenheit or 105 Celsius. b. Drop a small amount of jam on an ice cold plate and turn upside down. If the jam runs, it is not yet set. Continue cooking and repeat as necessary.
NFD I Style
62
4. It will take roughly 30-90 minutes to cook, depending on your stove and heat level, however check to make sure your jam is set to confirm it’s done. 5. Fill jam to the rim of sterilized glass containers (I used 8 x 80ml Weck jars), close the lid, and turn upside down to create a vacuum seal. 6. Store for up to 12 months. 7. Refrigerate after opening.
63
NFDI Recipe
TIPS: • Stay true to the ingredients (don’t cut down on sugar or add water), as this will yield the best result. • Use natural, organic ingredients to avoid pesticides interfering with your jam. • If the jam overcooks it will harden due to the sugar. *Fixing a runny jam is easier than fixing a hard jam. • Celebrate Mother’s Day by making your mom fresh rhubarb jam, and serving her breakfast in bed. Serve over homemade biscuits with a dollop of creme fraiche and a cup o’ tea. • This also makes a lovely gift or addition to a care package!
