OTE FROM THE EDITOR

The official arrival of spring has a feel good, “we made it through winter” sense of relief to it. Am I right? For those who live in locales where seasonal differences are less severe, you may not relate. To be honest I’m mildly jealous. Thankfully the snow is almost gone (earlier than normal), temps are on the rise and I have a spring in my step with shoes other than winter boots. I’m verging on exposing my toes! While flowers are not yet in bloom, I’m embracing the fresh air and anxiously awaiting what I refer to as “the green haze” that forms just as the buds begin to burst on the trees. It’s one of my favourite times of the year and it lasts only a few days before the trees begin to fill out. All of us at NFDI are looking forward to new fashion, fresh flowers and indulging in a lovely glass of rose, all of which we’re sharing in our ‘spring must haves’. We’re also featuring a bright, modern and eclectic home with a love for unexpected details and the thrill of the find. As the late Robin Willians said, “Spring is nature’s way of saying let’s party!”, we’re sharing party planning tips and photos from our office launch party in this issue of NDFI Style. Happy Spring!

eclecticReveal Embracing existing pieces of furniture, a fantastic art collection and an enthusiasm for treasure hunting, we set out to give this home a completed, polished feel. Our clients are a professional couple who have a huge heart for animals. They currently have two rescue dogs, Mollie and Moe, with their door wide open for more if needed. With this, the dogs were considered in most decisions, from durability to cleanability of each item and fabric. From there, the selections were based on function and comfort with an end goal of a layered, fun loving, eclectic environment more in line with our clients personalities. The goal was to bring personality to the home and elevate each room with furniture and finishing touches. Warming up the overall feel of the home was important as our clients didn’t feel it was true to them and craved a space that exemplified their travels, love of design and lifestyle. The end result is a modern, bright, colourful home with unexpected details throughout.

PLANNING101

SET THE DATE Whether you’re planning around a specific event, achievement or milestone, setting the date will be the first course of action. Planning far enough in advance will yield the best outcome in securing guests, event details and any service oriented suppliers. DETERMINE A GUEST LIST A head count will be an asset in understanding budget numbers, the venue, as well as food and beverage planning. Plan for roughly 60% of an invite list to attend. If the list involves close friends expect closer to 75%. DIY VS. HIRE Determine what you’ll do yourself and what you’ll hire out. Speak to your strengths and comfort levels, while also being honest about your time and abilities. If cooking is not your strength, hire a caterer. If decor is something you struggle with, hire a stylist. There are a wealth of service providers available to help bring your party to life, stress free. RESPONDEZ S'IL VOUS PLAIT Whether an invite is sent via post or email, make it easy for your guests to respond. Email invites allow guests to respond with a few clicks with a reminder sent for the party a few days in advance. However, there’s nothing like receiving a lovely invitation by mail. BUDGET Determining a budget will provide parameters and an understanding as to what the overall costs will be. Regardless of whether you’re completing tasks yourself, there’s still a cost. Create a spreadsheet to keep track of quotes and make decisions accordingly. EMBRACE A THEME Have a colour combination you love? A cultural vibe? Want to chanel a particular era? Carry this through from concept to completion including invites, decor, even party attire. Have fun with it! MOODY, IN A GOOD WAY Lighting plays a large part in the atmosphere of a party. Consider candles, outdoor lighting and/or dim lights to create a special atmosphere. Bonus: dim lighting is really flattering! ALL THE GOOD VIBES Music is essential to a party and can be as easy as a playlist from your phone or as interactive as a band with a dance floor. Consider your crowd, theme and budget when determining the best option. DETAILS MATTER Menu cards, napkins, flowers, photo booths, place cards, adornments and gift bags! There’s no shortage of ways to add details around every corner regardless of the kind or style of party. Adding visual layers to a table, eye catching decor and thoughtful preparations creates a party atmosphere where guests feel special. HAVE YOUR CAKE AND EAT IT TOO! Don’t forget about dessert! Whether served alongside the meal or something guests take away, adding a sweet treat at the end of a party is always in good taste.

PARTY

OFFICE

17

It’s been a long time coming! The preparations for our office launch party have been months in the making and by the time the day came we had much to celebrate. Our first national publication in Canadian House and Home, 17 years in business and of course the completion of our new office space. We had an amazing turnout and were beyond grateful to all those who came to celebrate and subsequently have supported us throughout the years. It takes a village to grow a business and we have a design industry like no other here in Calgary, who raise each other up and cheer on success. Whether a supplier, a trade or fellow designer, our hearts are overflowing with love for all the encouragement and support we have received.
