HELLO
2020 BLUE HUES TO EMBRACE THE WINTER BLUES
Volume two I S S U E . 01
EDITORS NOT E Depending on where you live in Canada, the winters can be cold. This is especially true in Calgary. But don’t let that deter you from visiting, because with the cold you get beauty. Alberta is known for its vast blue skies all year round, and while a crisp winter’s day can take your breath away, the brilliance of a blue sky is enough to blind you. Sunglasses are a must here in the winter. A combination of sunshine reflecting off of glistening snow, a neverending atmosphere of blue sky, plus an infinite number of crystals of frost adorning every tree branch, results in a magical, winter wonderland. Get a glimpse of what this looks like on page 3. At the end of our street lies one of the most beautiful parks in Calgary, in all its winter glory. I don’t know about you, but as much as I appreciate a picturesque winter, I also love being inside. I crave the comforts of home, warm drinks, cozy socks and long baths. I also find myself looking for more warmth in the textures and materials I’m bringing into my own home, as we are in the throws of renovating our main floor.. Whether items with history, something that’s a little more worn and well loved, I’ve been excited to infuse what I’m calling “artifactual style” into my home. This is also my forecast theme for 2020. Find out what designers, Jackie, Alex and Brianna, are also forecasting this year on pages 31-32. And while we’re on the topic of warmth, don’t miss our five warm beverages feature to inspire you to ditch a Starbucks visit and brew something at home. Who said winter blues were a bad thing? We’re sharing our favourite blue paint colours as well as a main floor renovation home tour to inspire you to think outside the neutral box and add this well loved colour to your home. A fresh start and new chapter is upon us. In our staff picks section, our team is sharing their personal intentions for the year, and items they’re feeling inspired by to make their year great. From all of us at NFDI, we wish you a wonderful year ahead, rich in blessings, overflowing in love. As we start our second year of sharing our creative content with you, we are so full of gratitude for the positive response we have received from our Lookbook in 2019. Our creative wheels have been in full motion and we’re excited to bring you more inspiration throughout 2020. We hope you will cozy up and enjoy our first issue of a new decade, the Winter Issue of NFDI Style!

I’m ready to get back to basics in 2020. Focused on the foundations of faith, family and wellness. More face to face, less phone. More simple pleasures. Recognizing what’s manageable and not over complicating things in this already complicated world. As our family dynamic is changing this year, I look to settle into a new normal at home, with our oldest daughter spreading her wings, and a new environment with the completion of our renovation. Conscious decision making and a focus on friend and family time. As well as a little extra attention on “me”. I hope to appreciate the fast and full days as they are, as well as relish and pause in the slow, even as few and far between as they may be.

This 2020 I would like to be more intentional with meal planning and clean eating for me and my family. I will be trying to make more time with family and friends, and will arrange more get togethers. Me and my husband will wrap up a few final deficiencies from our home reno. We are also planning a family Holiday to Peru, and I’d like to get fit for that Machu Picchu trek!

This year I am setting intentions to slow down, and focus more on aspects that make me happy! I’m also looking forward to pushing myself creatively in my projects and creating tailored spaces for our clients with more unexpected details. Colour, travel, me time, cruelty-free products, ideas and people are on my radar for 2020 and beyond.

This year my intentions are to refocus and make wellness a priority. For me, that means spending more time with family and friends, travelling and exploring, expanding my culinary skills, saving money and self care. I am also looking forward to expanding my responsibilities and creativity in my new role as intermediate designer!

2019 for me was a year of reflection. With the loss of several family members, I have been and will continue to be more intentional about the time I have with the people I love and care about. With this thinking, I aim to embrace everything that comes my way, remembering to find good in times of challenge and appreciating and celebrating the highs for the year. I see 2020 as a fresh start to kick bad habits while making new and better ones. My focus this year will be on self care, faith, mental wellness, staying active and finishing some final design details in my new home!

KERSTIN Sometimes you need to reset your priorities. My new year will be about taking a step back in some areas, and stepping up in others. Less screen time and getting organized will hopefully create more time to spend with family and friends, more time for hobbies, and more time to celebrate and be thankful for whatever 2020 brings. My own creativity is currently inspired by all the pretty detailing and soft colours of my picks.

KILLARNEY RENOVATION A renovation is often spurred on by a lack of function, change of lifestyle or a home old enough it requires an update. For this family of four, it was a combination of overall function, and a request to change from a dark and outdated vibe to a bright, fresh, family friendly open concept main floor living space. The criteria was to create an area for the girls to do homework, in a room of its own and still within earshot of mom and dad, open up the kitchen and make it more functional as well as turn the existing play area into an adult worthy living room for entertaining and spending time as a family. With a fresh palette of white and blue offset by warmer tones of wood and caramels, alongside highly durable and maintenance friendly materials, this main floor went from dark and dreary to bright and beautiful.
