I’m learning to let my hair down a little. I’m a planner, an organizer, and I like things a certain way. I’m not super spontaneous. I like to be prepared. These characteristics, while helpful, don’t always coincide with fun, and admittedly I get disappointed when things don’t go quite as I planned.

In preparing for travel, I would typically have a plan in place. Dinner reservations, tickets purchased for sites to see and places to go. When my husband and I visited London last year, I did none of the above due to how busy I was leading up to our trip. I started to feel anxious a few weeks prior to our departure, as I really had nothing planned. I decided to embrace the impromptu nature of our trip, and take hold of spontaneity. Whatever the day held, wherever the wind blew, it was going to be as it should. It was perfect. Each day we walked to Gail’s Bakery around the corner from our flat, and made a plan for the day while we sat and drank coffee at the café window. Walk the streets of London with us on pages 61-92. I love every nook and cranny of this city, so very much.

Planning is in my blood, and it comes in very handy being an interior design professional. The amount of organzing and thought that goes into a project is not for the faint of heart. The attention to detail and plethora of considerations are numerous and intense. Renovations are in a league of their own, and bring about challenges unlike a new home build. Our before and after home tour this issue is an incredible transformation, whereby we moved the kitchen from one part of the house to another, and took room from a main bathroom to make a larger ensuite. Take a tour through our dramatic before and after bungalow project on pages 7-37. You’ll hear directly from the homeowner, their reason for renovating, what their favourite spaces are, and advice to someone about to embark on their own project. If you have a vision, there’s no shortage of opportunity and options in bringing a home to life.

While this issue celebrates spring, we’re leading up to the summer solstice, one of my favourite days of the year. We plan an annual party full of food, fun, fabulous people and festive tunes. Get ready to embrace the longest day of the year, and host a party with my tips for celebrating this special day on pages 39-44. Our outdoor, al fresco dining experience had us enjoying the day long into the night.

As the newness of spring starts to come to life, take the road less travelled, find the nooks and crannies, head down the alleyways, or “hallways”, as I referred to them while wandering through London. See what you find. Look up, look down, look side to side, inspiration is everywhere. Whether in your own city or one abroad, get your walking shoes on. You won’t be disappointed.

With gratitude,

BAKER’S BUNGALOW BAKER’S BUNGALOW

I’m so thrilled to share our recently completed bungalow project with you. The homeowner of this project came to us because of this platform, NFDI Style, most specifically our Fall 2020 issue. We met shortly thereafter, and got underway with a smaller project in their lower level before diving into the main floor overhaul.

In considering the plans the family had for the main floor, it became apparent how important the renovation was, and what it would mean to them. They loved the bones of the home, and its location, but were ready to make it their own, and subsequently a more functional space for their lifestyle. With this, they decided to embark on the renovation sooner than anticipated. We put the smaller project on hold and dove into the design of the main floor. The renovation began in February of 2022, and took six months to complete - longer than expected, however worth the extra time in order to make the best choices, wait for the right product, and put the house back together with integrity.

Renovations are messy. They can be unkind, daunting and exhausting. They’re also exciting and exhilarating all the same. It’s fair to say, our client experienced it all. This home was opened up to its core, guts exposed, providing an intimate knowledge of what lay beneath the walls they had lived within for years prior. In the ups and downs and rollercoaster ride of it all, the outcome is always worth it. Our client shares her candid thoughts on what started it all, why they embarked on the upheaval, and what they may have done differently.

I’m delighted to have the opportunity to tour you through the before and after of this home, and share their renovation story with you.

WHEN YOU PURCHASED THE HOME, WHAT DREW YOU IN?

We loved the location and overall size of the house. We also loved the fact we purchased the house from the original owners and very few renovations had been completed, giving us the freedom to design the space how we wanted.

WHAT WAS THE TIPPING POINT TO RENOVATE?

Oh my - so many! The front door was sagging, the hardwood floors were thin - the house was just generally tired and really in need of a renovation. We also wanted to renovate before our teenager moved out of the house so the three of us could enjoy a beautiful home together!

WHAT WAS YOUR FAVOURITE PART OF THE DESIGN PROCESS?

TELL US ABOUT THE DECISION TO RELOCATE YOUR KITCHEN?

We are a family of 3 that love to cook and bake. Our old kitchen was tiny and only one person was able to comfortably be in the space at a time. We moved the kitchen to where there would be lots of space for everyone to work together and enough cabinets so custom touches could be included, such as a coffee station and his and her baking sections in the island.

The built-in shelving offers two lighting sources: an organically shaped wall sconce within the top shelf, and a small table lamp utilizing an outlet perfectly situated in the shelf below. We love layering lighting within a space for ambience and interest.

This is a tough one because I love them all - but I do love the living room. There are so many beautiful details in the room from the custom sofa to the fireplace to the custom black metal glass doors. I love sitting on the couch, reading my book and seeing the entire house and taking in just how well designed the space is.

The once four-piece main bathroom was on the “out of order” list, meaning there were no plans to renovate it. The couple had updated it from its original state years ago, and they were happy to leave it out of the scope. As things happen, once walls were opened up and rooms reframed, the primary shower ended up being smaller than anticipated. The adjacent main bathroom’s tub, if removed, would make for an ideal shower in the ensuite.

31 | spring 2023

Our clients leaned into and embraced a “we’d be crazy not to” approach in making the space in their ensuite that much better. We opened up the walls, removed the tub, and moved plumbing, affording the ensuite additional real estate, perfect for an upgraded shower. The main bathroom was reincarnated as a powder room, and ended up with a complete refresh, cohesive and connected to the rest of the home.

AFTER RENOVATING, WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE SOMEONE WANTING TO DO THE SAME?

I have two! 1. You will go over budget, expect it. 2. If in doubt, move it out! We had previously renovated the basement and were told we could leave everything downstairs covered in plastic. However, there was so much drywall dust over everything, we wished we had rented portable storage and moved everything into it instead of cleaning up the never ending dust.

IF YOU COULD DO ONE THING DIFFERENTLY, WHAT WOULD YOU DO?

I would put hardwood in the office (not shown). The original carpet selection was beautiful, but due to cost overruns it just felt too expensive. We went with a secondary selection, and I wish we had made the decision to go with the hardwood that was throughout the rest of the home, or the original carpet!

SUMMER

SOLSTICE

My husband and I love to entertain. Whether it’s impromptu gatherings, small dinner parties, traditional celebrations like Thanksgiving and Christmas, or our daughters’ friends, our front door is often open, and our house full.

A last minute gathering with several friends 15 years ago after our eldest daughter’s seventh birthday party, has led to an annual tradition to celebrate the summer solstice.

It’s one of my favourite days. We gather with friends, and relish in the light extending long into the evening. It started out as a casual bbq, now we treat ourselves along with our guests to a catered evening, and most recently a private chef. It’s become an event we look forward to all year, with each party so different from one to the next, whether the guest list, food, playlist, weather or stories to tell.

Each year we make a playlist, two in fact. An upbeat and dance worthy option for daytime, and a vibey, chill collection as the sun goes down. It’s been fun to see how they’ve evolved over the years, and we’ll often listen to a playlist from years ago and reminisce.

The weather in June is unpredictable. We’ve had years where it poured buckets, and others too chilly to be outside regardless of sunshine and blue skies. Last year I had a vision of a smaller gathering, with a community style table set up in our backyard al fresco style. It was a risky ask, as the forecast was proving not to be in my favour. I crossed my fingers, toes, eyes and arms in hopes the rain would stave off. It was iffy all day, and ultimately a close call. We had a backup plan, but it didn’t make my heart happy, so I wished with all my might for Mother Nature to be on my side and help create the magical evening I hoped for. She delivered!

While it’s still only spring, we’re planning and preparing for this year’s event, and relishing in each day longer than the last. Gathering around a table with people I love is something that’s been instilled in me from a young age, learning from my Grandparents whose door was always open too.

ORGANIZATION

Is there a more thankless chore than laundry? You’ve no sooner emptied each basket and they start filling up again, only to repeat the next laundry day. If you have young children this task seems never ending. We hear you!

When designing a home renovation project or custom new build, we put priority on creating a functional and stylish laundry room. We’re sharing our top 10 tips to help create yours!

PHOTOGRAPHY | Phil Crozier

natural light

Any opportunity to include a window in the laundry room is money well spent. Natural light is good for our mood, and allows fresh air and sunlight during midday laundry tasks. Any connection with the outdoors feels good, and a laundry room should not be overlooked.

HAVE FUN WITH COLOUR & PATTERN

A laundry room is a great space to add a little fun and lighten up the task at hand. Colourful cabinetry or patterned tile are great ways to add interest to a utilitarian space.

PLENTY OF SURFACE SPACE

Whether for folding clothes or dealing with stubborn stains, counters are an asset when it comes to laundry rooms.

OPEN AND CLOSED STORAGE

Providing a combination of both closed and open storage means laundry detergent containers can be hidden and stylish baskets and containers exposed.

HANGING RODS

More and more clothes these days are required to hang dry, whether delicates, work out clothes or jeans. Providing even a small rod to accommodate items to hang is a great use of space and function.

STYLISH STORAGE

Woven baskets, glass canisters, stylish hand soap pumps are all worthy of making their way into a laundry room. Chores need not be boring!

PUT A SINK IN IT

If space permits, an undermount sink and single hole faucet are huge perks in a laundry room. Soaking stubborn stains or rinsing clothes, having a sink nearby is a great idea. Planning ahead is key as rough in’s will need to be considered early on.

CLEVER STORAGE

There are so many ways to conceal functional elements these days. Ironing boards within drawers and flat drying racks on pull out shelves to name a few. Planning ahead with the minimum widths and depths will yield the best results in creating a stylishly functional laundry room.

FULL TILE BACKSPLAHES

Whether working out tough stains or hanging wet clothes, eliminating drywall is ideal for a laundry room. A fully tiled backsplash not only functions best, it also provides a level of personality and fun within the space.

LAUNDRY BINS & SORTERS

Large baskets and bins are ideal for sorting laundry. If space permits, having individual bins to separate colours, darks, whites and delicates is sure to make your laundry time efficient.

A SWEET SUCCESS

If you live in Alberta or Saskatchewan, Crave is more than likely a household name. Crave began 18 years ago with a true love of baking, and the intention and hope of bringing people together with their family inspired sweet treats. Get to know sisters and co-owners Carolyne and Jodi! We sat down with the dynamic duo to learn more about how they started, running a business together, and plans for the future. They’ve also generously shared a few of their favourite recipes for the season and beyond.

STORY
Nyla Free Designs Inc. WORDS BY Crave Cupcakes

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO START CRAVE?

Growing up on our family farm in High River, Alberta we were able to learn from the best. Our mom, grandmothers and aunts were amazing bakers. Not only did they teach us how to bake, but they passed on their values of quality, honesty and integrity. Throughout the years, we both completed university degrees and pursued careers, but continued to share a love for baking, and sharing quality baking with others. With those values always in our hearts, the two of us came together to build Crave. We worked together on the name and ideas right from the beginning. Carolyne happened upon our first locationnow the Kensington location - while she was on a bike ride through the community. With our grandmother’s chocolate cake recipe and our mother’s secret to irresistible buttercream, we opened our first bakery.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE PART OF RUNNING YOUR BUSINESS?

Learning what we are capable of achieving when we have the right team working with us. Our team is absolutely amazing. Their creativity and passion is so exciting, and the ideas discussed around our table continually inspire us. Our bakers start their shifts at 5AM every morning - we are proud to say we have such a talented, dedicated team who still crack each egg, measure, and decorate by hand. Our team shares our passion for producing quality bakingthey bake every single Crave product with skill, care, and kindness.

Another favourite part is always learning new things. We are life-long learners, and running a business teaches you new things every day.

WHAT DOES “A DAY IN THE LIFE” LOOK LIKE FOR YOU?

We are both involved in the business on a day-to-day basis. When we are in the office, most of our time is spent meeting with our teams, checking in with store operations and working on the business. Our overall role is to ensure Crave always produces the best baking to share. We are very passionate about creating and maintaining a great work environment, both at HQ and in our bakeries. We strongly believe creating a positive work environment results in positive experiences for each and every one of our customers.

WHAT IS IT LIKE RUNNING A BUSINESS AS SISTERS?

We have always been friends as well as sisters, though some days we may disagree, we always have the same intentions of where we want Crave to go. It comes back to having the same vision for Crave we have both loved and nurtured since 2004 - to provide quality baking as scrumptious and special as the people who share it.

WHAT DOES THE FUTURE HOLD FOR CRAVE?

We are very excited to be launching our Crave Bake At Home products onto more grocery shelves as well as possibly opening a few stores outside of Alberta.

WHAT IS SOMETHING PEOPLE MIGHT NOT KNOW ABOUT CRAVE?

• Each Crave location is owned and operated by original Co-Founders Carolyne and Jodi.

• Crave began with our grandmother’s cake recipe and our mom’s buttercream recipe.

• We opened our first location in 2004.

• We have locations in Edmonton and Saskatoon.

• We originally considered naming Crave ‘Scrumptious’ (we are very happy it was taken!).

TIPS & TRICKS

Creating delicious baking takes time, care and attention. We have been baking for many years and some of our most precious memories have been made in the kitchen. We hope you too can experience the joy of baking, the smell of fresh cookies in the air, cutting the first slice of a perfect loaf and sharing those moments with loved ones.

Here are a few of our tips to help your baking turn out just right:

• Whisk all dry ingredients together before adding them to your liquid ingredients.

• Crack eggs on a flat surface and into a small bowl before adding to your recipe.

• Baking loaves can be tricky as the top may look baked but sometimes the inside is not. To bake a perfect loaf, insert a thermometer into the middle of the loaf, when it reads 200°F, your loaf is done.

Gone are the days when I carried a DSLR camera around my neck while travelling. It’s not because I don’t appreciate a more traditional approach to photography, but more so the convenience of taking photos on my phone. I’ve gotten accustomed to capturing memories and experiences this way, and I love being able to look at them, edit, upload and/or share to a social platform, or send by text.

Our entire trip to London was captured on my iPhone. I’m sharing my personal photo taking tips to document your next trip, special occasion or simply an everyday moment. I had an iPhone 12 pro at the time of our trip, so I will say, if you’re planning to use a phone as your main photography device, upgrading it to a recent model, pro version, will yield the best results.

5.

Although this may be a given for some, making sure any oils or dust are wiped off your lens before shooting is crucial. Forgetting to do so could result in disappointment with a blurred film over each photo.

LIVE VS. NOT LIVE

Live photos offer a more dynamic way to photograph, and contrary to what many believe, they don’t innately decrease your image quality. Great for capturing the before and after, and capturing image audio, it’s important to note that live photos take up twice the amount of storage space than a regular photo.

GRID LINES

Using the grid feature while you shoot is great for alignment, focus placement, and the rule of thirds. The grid will help guide the composition of your photo, and aid in your positioning. To add this feature simply go to Settings > Camera > Composition > Grid.

FOCUS & EXPOSURE

By tapping your screen you’re indicating the focal point of your photo, allowing the camera to centre its attention around your subject. Furthermore, you can use the small sun icon next to the focus to adjust the image’s exposure. This feature mimics that of shutter-speed, as it increases or decreases the amount of light in the frame. Press down on the sun and drag up or down to adjust the brightness.

PORTRAIT MODE 6.

Portrait mode allows you to take photos with a distinct depth of field, blurring the background of your focal point. Good light is important, and natural light is best for this mode. Capturing the photo works best when you’re at an ideal distance. Your phone will guide you accordingly by way of the text highlighted in yellow.

DARK MODE/HOLD STILL

Shooting photos in low light can be difficult at the best of times, especially with an iPhone. Dark Mode assesses the amount of light present in a frame and adjusts how long the shutter is open to let in as much light as possible. If using dark mode, it’s important to keep extremely still. The longer your shutter is open, the more movement it will capture. This can also yield a cool effect, with a play on light and blurred objects.

ANGLES 7. 8.

It’s good to move around! There are so many angles and cool perspectives you can gain from adjusting your position and getting up or down to new levels. Instead of zooming in on your focus, play around with your angle and proximity first!

PEOPLE PICTURES 9.

Don’t be afraid of people in your photos, they add context, life and a sense of action. The perfect photo isn’t necessarily one with no one around. Allowing people to flow in and out of your frame keeps your image real, and “in the moment”.

BE PATIENT... BUT DON’T WAIT

Having an attention to detail is important, especially when you’re framing a photo that has intention. Lining up your angles, adjusting your position, and locking in your focus are all things you should consider before taking your photo; however, don’t wait for the perfect moment. This is the beauty of photography, and specifically photography on-the-go. Embrace the quirks and uniqueness of each shot, that’s what it’s all about!

CLEAN YOUR LENS
61 | spring 2023

In all the times I’ve been to London, I’ve never experienced the city quite like I did during this trip: by foot. I hadn’t appreciated how easy it was to get around. The opportunity to see and find new things while walking far outweighed the time it took to reach a destination. Taxis, subways and buses all provide options to get from point A to point B faster than you would by foot, but how many times have you whizzed by something and thought, “oh we have to go back there!”, and never did? While on foot, the ability to experience a site, find something new, pop into a store, or grab a bite at a local pub is at the ready, regardless of your agenda.

As large as London is, it’s easy to get around. We would decide what we wanted to do each day while enjoying a coffee and pastry at Gails, around the corner from the flat we rented. We looked up addresses, purchased tickets if needed, and got a basic game plan. From there we set out for the day. We walked for hours, with little navigation other than we knew the direction we wanted to go, and a few specific stops. The rest fell into place, and the day shook out as it did.

I also experienced the city through the eyes of my husband, who had never been across the pond. He was amazed at the history, architecture, and the cars. He took more photos of cars than he did of me, and I took photos of him taking photos of cars. We were quite the pair, but I loved seeing his enthusiasm as we moved through the city; roads we travelled, sites we saw, museums we wandered through and meals we ate, taking in all it had to offer.

We stayed in an airbnb in the City of Westminster, a borough in inner London, which we loved. It was perfectly situated to walk out our door and stop at the neighbourhood coffeeshop before hitting the streets to wander the day away. A few nights we took a cab to dinner, then we’d walk back to the flat. On average we logged 20,000 steps a day! Walking helps offset the extra indulgences a vacation brings, yet feeds our soul as we put one foot in front of the other and experience a change of pace. Time moves differently when you walk, and you really do have an opportunity to stop and smell the flowers. There are plenty of them in London this time of year.

WESTMINSTER

WESTMINSTER

A city in Central London near Buckingham Palace where the Parliament and much of the government is located. There are many places of note to visit in this area.

ECCLESTON YARDS

A trendy open-air courtyard filled with independent shops, restaurants, wellness places, and co-working spaces. Outdoor events, from Wimbledon screenings to Christmas markets, take place here. This former site of a power station was redeveloped in 2018.

BELGRAVIA

A posh, mostly residential neighbourhood in Central London, distinguished by its long rows of terraced townhouses. It’s one of the world’s wealthiest districts, and London’s most expensive homes are located here, as are luxury shops, boutiques, hotels, restaurants, and pubs.

THE GORING

A luxury hotel of impeccable British pedigree. This quintessentially English hotel is over 100 years old, and still family owned. Each room has been individually designed by a British designer. There is a Michelin star dining room. Kate Middleton stayed here the night before her wedding. Rooms start at around $1000 CAD per night.

CHUCS

An upscale Italian bistro with an interior that evokes 1950’s Italy. Check out the pink leather bar stools! Chucs has all-day dining, an extensive wine menu, and a wraparound terrace for al fresco dining.

GAIL’S

A British artisan bakery/cafe chain offering fresh breads and baked goods handmade with the finest natural and seasonal ingredients, and house blend coffee. They also service many of London’s restaurants. With a priority on giving back to the community, any leftovers at the end of the day are donated to charity.

WALK FROM WESTMINSTER
Belgravia Gail’s Bakery

TATE MODERN

The Tate houses modern and contemporary art from England and around the world. Compared to other museums, it tends to be more international and quirky in its offerings. The art is displayed according to theme, not chronologically, and the displays change frequently. Attendance is free, and there is no need to pre-book.

BOROUGH MARKET

With sites dating back to the 12th century, Borough Market is one of London’s oldest food markets. While presently it houses an array of specialty foods for the general public to purchase, it was once a wholesale market supplying fruits and vegetables to local grocers. You may recognize this market as a set in movies such as “Bridget Jones’s Diary” and “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban”.

TOWER BRIDGE

The iconic Victorian suspension bridge spanning the River Thames. It was erected in the late 1800’s. The bridge is a great perch from which to obtain a panoramic view of London. While you can simply walk across for free, book to tour the towers, high-level walkways with GLASS floors, and the engine rooms which power the bridge lifts that allow large boats to pass by.

YE OLDE MITRE

A historic, hard to find pub located in a courtyard at the end of a narrow alleyway entrance. It was originally built in 1546 for the servants of the Bishop of Ely. (Hence the name Mitre, which is the hat worn by bishops.) Rebuilt in 1773, the pub houses the glass-enclosed preserved stump of a cherry blossom tree around which, according to legend, Queen Elizabeth I danced the maypole with Sir Christopher Hatton. Of note: Ye Olde Mitre is closed on weekends.

BERMONDSEY DISTRICT

A charming little neighbourhood with boutiques and cafés.

WALK FROM ST.PAUL’S CATHEDRAL

An Anglican cathedral founded in 604 AD, and rebuilt after the Great Fire of 1666 with Baroque elements designed by Sir Christopher Wren. The cathedral is situated on Ludgate Hill, the highest point in London. Its lead covered dome is one of the highest in the world.

NOTE:

If you’re up for the 500 step trek to the top of the dome, you’ll be rewarded with spectacular views of the city! Definitely a worthwhile experience in my books.

NATURAL HISTORY MUSEUM

Discover the history of the natural world and life on earth at the architecturally ornate Natural History Museum. As with most museums in London, admission is free. Famous for its exhibits of dinosaur skeletons and other specimens.

MACELLAIO RC

An Italian restaurant specializing in meat, where you can have your steak butchered right in front of you. While an unassuming storefront may have you wondering if you’re in the right place, this was by far one of our favourite meals and experiences. I would go out of my way to eat here again. Exceptional food and service, with a “fallen” crystal chandelier in the back dining area.

HARVEY NICHOLS

Another luxury department store offering designer fashion, beauty, food, wine, plus an array of dining options.

HARRODS

The self-proclaimed “World’s Leading Luxury Department Store”. This fabled English landmark boasts 330 departments and services, including restaurants, laid out in a Baroque building that covers 5 acres. The store’s motto is “all things for all people, everywhere”. You’ll be greeted at the door by a “Green Man” - a doorman in a long coat and cap in Harrods’ signature green. Stop by the gift shop for Harrods-branded bags and teddy bears.

PIZZERIA & PASQUA

A restaurant in Harrods that serves premium wood-fired Italian pizza, pasta, salads, and fine Italian wines. Try one of their signature pies. We sat at the bar and chatted with the chefs, which added to the experience. The pizza was delicious!

STREET VIEWS

A residential and retail district in Central London, south of Hyde Park. Knightsbridge is one of London’s most affluent areas. Immerse yourself in Victorian streetscapes, high-end shops (including Harrods), restaurants and hotels, old churches, and attractions like the Victoria and Albert Museum, and the Royal Albert Music Hall. Don’t miss Knightsbridge at night, when it’s all lit up.

HAM YARD

A beautiful hotel with colourful, pattern-infused interiors by English designer Kit Kemp. In addition to a bar & restaurant, the hotel houses 13 boutique shops, a bowling alley, theatre, and even a rooftop garden with bee hives!

KILN

The food is exceptional, the atmosphere contagious, and all is abuzz in this tiny Thai grill full of energy. You can make reservations for the lower level dining area, however it’s worth the wait to sit at the counter and have a front row seat to the creative kitchen. Perfect for an after show nosh, or afternoon snack.

LIBERTY SHOP

An iconic department store offering designer clothing, jewellery, housewares, a cafe, and an in-house florist. Fabric and fashion lovers will be familiar with Liberty’s own iconic fabric brand. The brightly coloured, distinctive florals are available in fine cotton, home decor fabric, and wallpaper. Even if you’re not a shopper, the building itself is worth visiting with its ‘mock’ Tudor exterior, wood rafters and antique elevators.

WHITE HORSE

A local pub recommended by a gentleman working in the vintage carpet department in Liberty London. It originated in the early 1700’s and was rebuilt in the 1930’s in Art Deco style. Stop in for a drink or a meal.

CHINATOWN

Experience Chinese culture on the decorated streets of Soho’s Chinatown. This walkable district was established in the 1950’s by immigrants who opened restaurants to cater to British soldiers returning from the Far East with an appetite for the cuisine. You’ll find numerous restaurants, bars. shops, and festivals.

WALK FROM SOHO
Liberty Ham Yard White Horse Chinatown Kiln An eclectic area located just outside of downtown London, SOHO stands for South of Horton. Soho is home to Shaftesbury Avenue, the most famous street in the West End for Broadway shows and theatres.

TATE BRITAIN

Formerly the National Gallery of Britain, the Tate Britain is a free gallery featuring all-British art presented by date. This was by far my favourite museum we visited. I’m not sure if it was the feeling it gave me, the art in general or the building overall. Its spaces were impressive, and the main exhibit by Hew Locke was unparalleled. This exhibit continues on through October 2023 if you find yourself in London. Mark Rothko’s Seagram Murals, a gift from Rothko to the Tate Britain, are also a must see.

All manner of road travel for the Royal Family is arranged here, be it carriage or car. Check the website to see when they are open to the public for a self-guided or guided tour. See the Gold State and Diamond Jubilee coaches, suit up in special livery (uniforms) and have your picture taken in a reproduction coach.

THE CHURCHILL ARMS

The outside is almost as impressive as the inside. With a floral clad exterior, its presence is hard to miss on the corner of Kensington Church and Campden Streets. The inside is equally as impressive, and full to the brim with memorabilia. You won’t find typical pub food here, as the menu is authentic Thai food paired with an extensive beverage selection.

NOTTINGHILL

PORTOBELLO ROAD MARKET

Boasting the title of world’s largest antiques market, Portobello Road is essentially several markets in one. While shops are open seven days a week, the best day to go is Saturday as you’ll experience the street market to its fullest. Arrive early for the best antiquing, and to avoid the larger crowds arriving closer to noon.

CINQUECENTO

Neapolitan style pizza like Nona used to make. The restaurant is the perfect place for a midday fuel up while antiquing. The atmosphere is elevated granny chic with a mix of patterns and antique wares for service.

A PACKING GUIDE TO

CASHMERE SCARF Club Monaco

Cashmere is light and warm, which is perfect for travel. This scarf is a must accessory for me when travelling, and a great layer to have on the plane.

LOAFERS AGL

I’ve walked for miles in a pair of AGL shoes. They’re light, comfortable, stylish and worth the investment!

TRAVEL UMBRELLA Weatherman

An umbrella in London is a must, especially when walking. Choose one that fits easily into your handbag so you have less things to carry when the rain has stopped.

TINTED LIP BALM Sephora

London weather is unpredictable and is known to change throughout the day, so planning for many options is key. Layers will be your best friend, giving you the ability to manage your temperature throughout the day. The damp wind can be chilly, but all the walking you’ll be doing will keep your blood moving, and your body temperature up. We lucked out with very little rain and uncommon blue skies, however I was happy to have my coat and scarf with me daily. We were in London for 10 days at the beginning of April. Two pairs of shoes and two coats worked well amongst mixing and matching tops and bottoms. A capsule style wardrobe is the best approach to packing. While you’ll undoubtedly want to be stylish, the most important thing is that you’re comfortable, and warm! Here is an idea of what I packed for our trip.

Keep your lips hydrated with a hint of red by day.

CREW NECK SWEATER JCrew

While cashmere is an investment, I’ve never regretted it. It’s a perfect layer, but also feels elevated for the times when you do have your coat off.

SLIP SKIRT Aritzia

For a fancier meal or broadway show, a slip skirt is a packable item and pairs well with a cashmere sweater.

QUILTED JACKET Aritzia

A great everyday option and versatile coat. The hood is also beneficial as extra protection from the rain.

93 | spring 2023
London

V NECK SWEATER JCrew

Again, you can’t go wrong with a light knit cashmere sweater!

UTILITY PANT

Banana Republic

A great basic and easy to wear. If you’ve got rainy days, best to have a tighter fitting pant rather than something flowy or wider leg.

TRAVEL PUFF Aritzia

An ideal thickness and warmth for London weather. Waterproof, warm, and easy to pack.

WHITE BLOUSE

Massimo Dutti

Always a classic, and a capsule wardrobe must.

SNEAKERS

Tory Burch

Thankfully sneakers are en vogue so you can’t go wrong with a stylishly comfortable pair to look great, and keep your feet on track.

CROSSBODY SADDLE BAG

Marc Jacobs

A crossbody bag is another go-to essential for me when travelling. Choose one with a wide strap so it’s comfortable on your shoulder, and has enough space for your daily needs. A medium sized option is best.

NAIL COLOUR

Londontown

Double Decker style nails with the perfect London red.

WELLIES Lemon Jelly

Should rain be in the forecast, a water friendly footwear option may be best. Stay warm, dry and stylish with a pair of classic wellies.

RED LIPSTICK Sephora

Paint the town red with MAC’s matte red lipstick by night.

PENCIL PANT

Club Monaco

A staple piece and one that will dress up or down depending on where you’re off to!
