NYOS Junior Orchestra is for ambitious young musicians aged between 8 and 13 years old and the first step on the ladder for aspiring members of The National Youth Orchestra of Scotland. NYOS Junior Orchestra provides younger students with the opportunity to perform large-scale symphonic repertoire under the orchestra’s Chief Conductor, Dutch maestro Roland Kieft. Annual membership of NYOS Junior Orchestra includes a preparatory weekend in March, residential courses in both spring and summer, followed by the opportunity to experience the thrill of orchestral performances at top venues across the UK.
Roland Kieft “Having conducted the orchestra for the last three years, I am amazed how these children develop. There can be no doubt that parents, teachers and peers are inspired by the way they come home after the courses…like explorers; full of stories, full of satisfaction and full of ambition.”
Bruch Violin Concerto NYOS Junior Orchestra will be joined by one of Scotland’s finest young violinists, Jessica Coleman, in a performance of Max Bruch’s virtuosic violin concerto.

James Lowe “Our debut season exceeded everyone’s (already high) expectations and resulted in two electrifying concerts. It was hugely enjoyable to spend time with such fantastic young musicians and I can’t wait to see what 2014 brings...”
Benjamin Grosvenor ‘…a skill and talent not heard since Kissin’s teenage Russian debut’ GRAMAPHONE During 2014, NYOS Senior Orchestra will perform with one of the piano world’s hottest young talents. Benjamin Grosvenor won the 2004 BBC Young Musician keyboard final. Since then he has performed solo recitals at Wigmore Hall and the Concertgebouw, appeared with the New York Philharmonic at Carnegie Hall, performed at the First Night of the BBC Proms, become the youngest British musician ever to sign for Decca Classics and won a Classical Brit Award!
Daniel Palmizio Daniel Palmizio is Professor of Viola at the S. Cecilio Conservatory in Rome and a former winner of the Watson Forbes Viola Competition. He has appeared as a soloist with the World Youth Orchestra and on London’s South Bank.
‘Perch’ NYOS Senior Orchestra will represent Scotland in a truly spectacular international event during Glasgow’s ‘Festival 2014’ the city’s Commonwealth cultural celebration. Working alongside street theatre gurus Conflux together with their Brazilian and Australian counterparts, NYOS Senior Orchestra will perform a new score by Stephen Deazley simultaneously with the Youth Orchestras of Sydney and the University of Campinas (Brazil) in an awe-inspiring global performance on multiple stages.
“Audiences will experience aerialists overhead while street performers mingle amongst them. An orchestra performs a live score and buildings are transformed before one’s very eyes, while performances are screened live from Australia and Brazil.” 7
The National Youth Orchestra of Scotland is the flagship symphony orchestra of NYOS. The orchestra performs throughout the year in a variety of high profile venues in Scotland, the UK and Europe and its young musicians benefit from the invaluable performance experience this provides. Auditions for entry to The National Youth Orchestra of Scotland are held annually, throughout Scotland, attracting some 500 auditionees each year. In 2014, NYOS’ projects combine top-class conductors, thrilling repertoire, prestigious venues and more. Here are some reasons you cannot afford to miss out:
Soloists & Conductors Håkan Hardenberger NYOS will be joined on tour by the world’s leading trumpeter, Håkan Hardenberger. Together they will perform the trumpet concerto which NYOS commissioned from Sally Beamish in 2003.
”The Best Trumpet Player in the Galaxy”
THE TIMES
Tecwyn Evans Tecwyn Evans has been one of NYOS’ most popular conductors in recent years. Dividing his time between Scandinavia and his native New Zealand, Tecwyn’s recent appearances have included performances and recordings for Deutsche Grammophon with Bryn Terfel, performances throughout Australasia and with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales.
Michael Francis Michael Francis has conducted the LSO, the New York Philharmonic, the San Francisco Symphony and the orchestra of the Mariinsky Theatre in St Petersburg. He has deputised for John Adams, Valery Gergiev and André Previn and recorded for Decca. This young British conductor is one of the orchestral world’s hottest properties and in 2014 he will conduct NYOS’ summer tour.
Martyn Brabbins Martyn Brabbins is one of the UK’s most distinguished conductors performing regularly on the most prestigious stages in Europe (Concertgebouw, La Scala, Deutsche Oper, BBC Proms). He will make a welcome return to conduct NYOS during their BIS recording session.
8
”One of the most highly respected classical music labels in the world” For the first time, NYOS will make a commercial recording with one of the classical music world’s biggest labels, Scandinavian giants BIS. The recording of Sally Beamish’s Trumpet Concerto will be released on a joint CD with the RSNO.
Thrilling Repertoire Including Richard Strauss’ monumental Alpine Symphony and Elgar’s Enigma Variations.
Commonwealth Celebrations NYOS’s Spring concerts will be celebrations of the Commonwealth with music including the new composition by NYOS alumnus Peter Longworth, ‘Ludi - Concerto for Orchestra’ and the downright spectacular double concerto for piano and percussion ‘View from Olympus’ by John Psathas performed by the brilliant ‘Duo Gerassimez’ from Germany.
The 287th Three Choirs Festival
In 2011, NYOS wowed the Three Choirs Festival with its performance of James MacMillan’s Symphony No 3, so much so that they invited the orchestra back! Once again, NYOS symphony orchestra will appear at Worcester Cathedral during one of classical music’s oldest and most prestigious events.
The National Youth Orchestra of Scotland at 35 The NYOS Summer tour will finish with a gala 35th anniversary concert at the Usher Hall in Edinburgh. Don’t miss your chance to be a part of NYOS history.
