2024: The Year in 2024: The Year in Review Review

Farewell Letter from the Chair

… Amber Evans

t has been such an honor to serve as the 2024 Chair. What an amazing year we have had with elevating the membership experience, creating new Chapter initiatives, and ultimately fulfilling the mission of advancing cosmetic science together! The NYSCC holds such a special place in my heart, and I especially cherish the experience of serving during our milestone 70th Anniversary year.

Highlights for the year included:

• The launch of the NYSCC Inter nship Program, a first of its kind program, in which nine undergraduate students were sponsored for summer inter nships at seven companies The students gained invaluable hands-on experience in cosmetic science and opportunities to network with professionals, while we gained a few new SCC members with a bright future ahead

• The execution of highly-rated educational programs featuring new industry categories beauty supplements, oral health and beauty, and pet care expanded our reach, minds, and membership

• Suppliers’ Day achieving record attendance in attendees and exhibitors, solidifying its position as the preeminent ingredients and formulation event in North America (see the recap inside this issue)

• Greater exposure of students to cosmetic science was achieved through the applaudable efforts of the Outreach Committee and Future Chemists Workshop (FCW) In addition to multiple in-person events, the Outreach Committee, in partnership with ACS, hosted an impactful webinar with 350+ viewers. FCW strategically welcomed students from 20+ more universities this year, with half being from areas outside of the Northeast

• The 70th Anniversary Gala was held at New York City’s iconic Plaza Hotel The Chapter was honored to give out the most scholarships and grants in its history, including the new SCC Chapter Fellowship Grant which aims to help sister chapters fulfill the mission of advancing cosmetic science Share in the excitement and glamour of the evening on pages 9-11.

Delivering the experience and impact that the NYSCC is known for is a collaborative effort between a team of people that I truly appreciate I express my deepest gratitude to my trusted and esteemed executive board John Carola, Mythili Nori, Alex Blakeman, Diane Dabkowski, and Stacey House. Their input and support coupled with the unwavering dedication of the Chapter volunteers, Suppliers’ Day management team, and other key partners made this year an undeniable success

I look forward to supporting 2025 Chair John Carola in realizing new potential for the Chapter and the greater cosmetic industry I am very excited for all that will be accomplished with the existing executive board members, new Chair-Elect Anushka Nadkarni, and our wonderful volunteers, partners, and members

Thank you again for a successful year. W ishing all our members a beautiful holiday season full of inspiration, innovation and celebration!

Sincerely,

PS: Before the year ends, join us at our first Suppliers’ Day Preview Webinar on December 5th spotlighting INDIE 360, and please visit the NYSCC table at the SCC Scientific Meeting & Showcase in Los Angeles on December 11-13, 2024.

Letter from the 2025 Chair

… John Carola

Iam honored and excited to be the incoming Chair for 2025 Without question, my time as Chair-Elect was incredibly enlightening serving with Dr. Amber Evans, current NYSCC Chair, and Stacey House, Advisor (Chair 2023) Every day, I witnessed unwavering commitment to the Chapter and to our core mission of expanding cosmetic science education locally, nationally, and globally! Thank you, Amber, for taking the lead on so many new initiatives, while also expanding existing, successful programs. I look forward to continuing working with you as our wise and creative advisor

I am also grateful to my fellow board members, as we celebrated 70 years of NYSCC history, with the steadfast support of our committee members, program chairs, and countless volunteers who contributed to the innovative programs and initiatives that we executed You can read all about them throughout this special issue of Cosmeticscope.

Looking forward, our theme for 2025 will be “The Nexus of Science and Beauty: Where Collaboration + Partnership = Success.” This theme will be woven throughout all our programming and highlight the fact that the NYSCC, and Suppliers’ Day, is the focal point of beauty and personal care product development Our success in partnering with sister chapters across the globe, as well as related industry associations and publications, has translated into success for so many of our members and stakeholders.

We will begin the New Year with a joint, social event: a Ski Trip supported by the New York, Long Island, and Connecticut Chapters of the SCC. February will display the technical expertise of the NYSCC’s Scientific Committee, with multiple members collaborating on a top-notch technical showcase This is just the beginning of what we have planned for next year Stay-tuned for exciting new topics, initiatives, and engagement opportunities designed exclusively for our members and the growth of the cosmetic community.

As you know, Suppliers’ Day has become the main event in North America for for mulation and ingredients innovations and discovery. The 2025 dates are June 3-4 in the expanded, upper level of the Jacob K Javits Convention Center in New York City

I am grateful for your trust and support as I begin my tenure as your new Chair Happy, Healthy Holidays to you, your families, and loved ones I look forward to a New Year filled with health, hope, and success!

DSM-Fir menich was one of eight finalists that were selected from more than three dozen submissions that were reviewed and voted upon by a curated panel of judges that included leading beauty and personal care brands including members of the NYSCC Scientific Advisory Committee The judges were: Toussaint Jordan, Marketing Manager, Solabia USA + Applechem; Eileen Kim, Head of U.S. Innovation and Research, Chânel; Ron Robinson, Founder/CEO, BeautyStat; Tatyana Tabakman, Technical Innovation Director, Orveon Global; and Tao Zheng, Executive Director, Advanced Technologies – SPF and Makeup Innovation, The Estée Lauder Companies
