Creating Beauty, Changing Lives: The Artisans of The Alpha Workshops

Behind the Scenes: Creating a Design Book

This lecture features the people behind Alpha Workshops, the nation’s only nonprofit organization providing decorative arts education and employment to at-risk youths and adults with disabilities or other vulnerabilities.

Author, and design editor of New York magazine, Wendy Goodman, talks with art director, Aaron Garza, and photo editor, Leonor Mamanna, about the collaborative process of creating, May I Come In? Discovering the World in Other People’s Houses. Copies of the book will be available to purchase after the panel discussion.

Michael I. and Patricia M. Sovern Lecture on Design: Architect James Stewart Polshek This year, the annual Michael I. and Patricia M. Sovern Lecture on Design honors architect James Stewart Polshek. Presented in association with Archtober, Architecture and Design Month in New York City, October 2018. There will be a reception following the lecture.

Untold Stories: Women of Architecture and Design Join us for a panel discussion highlighting the stories of women in the fields of architecture and interior design, throughout history to the present day. Panelists include Victoria Rosner, Mary McLeod, Tamara Eaton and Mimi Hoang. Presented in association with Archtober, Architecture and Design Month in New York City, October 2018.

Life Along the Hudson: The Historic Country Estates of the Livingston Family As a follow up to Pieter Estersohn’s exhibition, A Practiced Eye, Pieter will dive deep into his new book, Life Along the Hudson: The Historic Country Estates of the Livingston Family, published by Rizzoli. Copies of the book will be available for purchase after the lecture. This event is presented in collaboration with ICAA.

Inspired Collaboration Join renowned architect Bobby McAlpine and his interior design partner Ray Booth as they discuss the inventive and visionary logistics of making homes. The focus of this lively discussion is about the collaboration, process and practice of design while balancing the distinct personalities of each client.

Both Poetry of Place and Evocative Interiors will be available to purchase after the discussion.

A Slice of England Join designer India Hicks and ICAA and NYSID Board Member Alexa Hampton for a glimpse into India’s life and work through the lens of four extraordinary houses, highlighting stunning examples of both traditional and contemporary English design. The Black Interior Designers Network: Breaking the Mold In this panel discussion, founder and project manager of Kimberly & Cameron Interiors located in Atlanta, Georgia and president of the Black Interior Designers Network (BIDN), Keia McSwain, along with members of BIDN will share the real deal on how they’ve overcome adversity in the design industry and how their journey has led them up to where they are today. NYSID alumna, Beth Diana Smith, will be on the panel. There will be a reception following the lecture.
